Every Video Game Movie Ranked from WORST to BEST
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 19 июн 2024
- Despite being a seemingly endless source of IP ripe for the cinematic treatment, the video game world rarely seems to produce a good movie adaptation. That said, there are a few exceptions to the rule and, based on recent releases, the outlook seems to be improving year on year. We can say that with some certainty because we've ranked every single one (so far!) from worst to best.

At first I thought it said “Every Video Game Ranked” and I was so confused that it was only an hour
Haha! Wonder what the worst and best games respectively would be on that list 🤔
3. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
2. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008
2. Tekken The Movie The Game
1. Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
That video would be like 500 parts
Speed run
It would just be the word "shit" on a rapid loop for 2 hours until we got over 45%
This channel is insanely enjoyable.
I am still waiting for their star wars worst to best games.
You're goddamned right.
@@josesosa3337 That's a lot of self flagellation to get to some good stuff :)
Ill give you something you'll enjoy ;)
@@McShufts I find their lists in particular very enjoyable to listen to.
I love it how the boys decided to rank every game movie ever, yet a good 50% are obscure Japanese releases that not many people have heard of / enjoy
@DejaVoodooDoll Pretty much. As enjoyable as Rampage is, its by no means better than say the Heaven's Feel trilogy
@@wolfnagi10 To be fair I give them credit alone for either knowing or looking up that ate was based on a game, cause I can almost promise you most of the fans outside of Japan probably think its an anime only series not knowing the VN even exists.
I have one objection: Ratchet & Clank "a crack in time" is bloody brilliant, arguably one of the best in the series
That was my first Ratchet! and yeah it has aged well,
tbf all the Ratchet games (expect for Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank) are great
Tekken Movie Drinking Game:
1. Take a shot whenever they say, "Jin, the people's choice."
2. Take a shot whenever Jin has a flashback.
3. Get pissed.
Side effects may include enjoying the movie.
Not too hard a feat even without alcohol, given how Blood Vengeance forces you to watch a fucking terrible anime story with Ling Xiaoyu and Alisa Bosconovitch as the main characters....only to have the two be little more than Krillins in the finale effectively revealing the plot was wasting your time....
@@TeryJones as a big Tekken fan, I hated both movies.
@@dimitrescu182 I am not a huge Tekken fan but I have played them and know at least some of the lore. and yeah even as casual game fan of it i agree they sucked
i dont know much about Tekken but the movie look back from the outside
"From critical nightmare Director Uwe Boll comes 2020!!"
Whoa, I thought kingsland was better than advent children....but I guess the fans made anything ff7 much popular ....
When you learn about Video Game history, you learn he is a terrible director making money on awful video game films.
And its sequel, "2021!!!!"
Sucks that Mortal Kombat: Annihilation was so bad it dragged down the genuinely good Mortal Kombat with it.
The TV series did better than any of their crap
@@booker9879 You talking about Conquest or the animated series?
@@willthomas2310 it's been to long I don't know which is which... I paid attention to the live action one... the animated ones I don't remember them lasting long... I didn't follow it often but what I caught was a huge improvement over the movies
The first and only time I ever walked out of the theater during the movie.
With the new way of america life I'm kinda glad theaters are gone... not like I missed it and the overpriced
I assume Leonard Maltin’s “400 Funerals and No Sex” line about Street Fighter was meant as a riff on the title of romantic comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral, which had been a huge hit in the US earlier in 1994. It should be noted that Maltin, despite a prolific career in film criticism, isn’t a very good writer.
Also regarding Street Fighter, it’s not entirely inaccurate to call it Raul Julia’s “final film” as Down Came a Blackbird was made for television and never had a theatrical release.
Why should that “be noted?” Its irrelevant
Apparently Van Damme and Kylie Minogue had "All Sex and No Funeral" during filming... Van Damme had all the damme cocaína in the world on set, too.
Make a ranked list of Pokemon movies, cowards!
I've come to really love these long videos. They must be a lot of trouble to put together, so thanks so much for keeping us entertained!
@matt fahringer Imagine reading the tone seriously. Grow up.
They made more than 1?
@@MattrickBT - There's 21 animated movies, last I checked. Plus Detective Pikachu.
@@NikosiaMateas and adults watch them?
I didn't think Silent Hill was THAT bad. Probably better than a good 20 entries above it.
silent hill movie is great. the revelations is horrible they say though (havent watched it myself)
@@muchamore321 the first movie was good, even great at some points. The sequel though takes a few points off the franchise
Saw Silent Hill at the cinema, it was fine but nothing amazing. Was confused Sean Bean wasn't brutally murdered.
It was a below average horror movie filled with horror tropes that had been played out long before it's release. It wasn't terrible and was put together well enough, but nothing about it really stands out and it is a terrible representation of the games themselves.
Agreed. It should not have been folded in with its sequel.
The one Video game movie I really like is Final Fantasy VII Advent Children.
It was direct to DVD and it also sucked. And I say this as a massive & lifelong FF7 fan.
@@AlexRN well I know that much, but, I think it did fine
@@AlexRN I'm a massive FF7 fan (obviously) and I really liked it. It's no masterpiece mind you, but I had a good time with it and I've gone back to it a few times.
@@AlexRN As a massive lifelong FF7 fan, I watched it only interested in seeing the Tifa fight scene as I figured it was gonna be the least obnoxiously anime thing about it (and it was) and unfortunately the rest of it failed to grab me because it was so obnoxiously anime.
It was very boring.
"Angry Birds was impressive for a movie based on a game about moving your finger from side to side."
You know what, that actually explains why the Sonic movie did so well.
I need an hour-long video of Ben and Peter pronouncing Japanese titles.
OMG YES!!!
😂
I need an hour long video of them apologizing for their pronunciations of Japanese titles.
'12 years after any of the games worth playing' for the Ratchet and Clank games?! I got beef with who wrote that one, the ps3 R&C Games were incredible, a Crack in Time, in particular, is a masterpiece lmao
Danji's Designs Agreed! R & C is hands down one of my fav PlayStation series.
I actually think Silent Hill (2006) is an interesting and artistic take on the games with marvelous practical creature effects.
Revelations (2012) however, is nearly unwatchable.
Yeah, it bothers me that they were batched together, the first silent hill should've been way higher in the list.
The first half of Silent Hill is good, the second is was so boring it brought me to tears. The second one is a disgrace to Silent Hill 3
@@senatorcthulu1815 I think the ending sequence is bad, overall I liked the pacing, mood and story. Agreed tho, the second one is straight trash. I don't know why the two movies constantly get thrown together when there is such a large quality gap.
@@ruekurei88 i think just how bad the second one is really overshadows how bad the second half of the first film is. I think overall, they are worthy of being lumped together and i would recommend people to not watch either.
I've come to really love these long videos. They must be a lot of trouble to put together, so thanks so much for keeping us entertained!
Very pleased with the recognition the Persona movies got here. They truly are incredibly good, even if you’ve never played the games. The get the story narrative across very well without any knowledge of the Persona series.
For anyone who hasn't seen Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, the entire thing is free on RUclips and unbelievably enjoyable, especially if you've played the games!
Yes! This movie was what got me into the games, it's just so charming
A testament to their quality, I didn't know 75% of these even existed 😅
So much respect for the quality of videos we’ve been getting recently. Thank you Ben, Peter and those involved behind the scenes.
You forgot the Dead Space films, the Dante's Inferno Film, and Halo Legends 😭
No they didn't.
When I saw Jason Statham in the Dungeon Siege trailer all I can say is “why are you in this movie you’re better than this?”
the movie is actually decent, these dudes didn't eve watch the damn movies they are "ranking", the sequels are fucking horrible tho. skip those, also completely different cast and characters
Movie is terrible. I watched it back when it first was available to rent. Jason Statham is so incredibly out of place in a medieval fantasy movie. Plot was horrible, and the orc monsters were a joke.
Is he though?
Biggest problem with using critic scores for video game movies, is that they are not made for the stuffy inflexible people who are film critics. Some of these films are better than their scores present. None are great but I really enjoyed some of them. Probably because I was the target audience.
Yeah, rotten tomatoes was probably the worst choice for ranking these movies. IMDB would have been more accurate atleast.
@@beashnpull if you paid full attention youd notice they didnt rate it entirely based on rotten tomatoes.
I can only assume by stuffy and inflexible you mean knowledgeable of films and filmmaking and the ability to tell shit from gold.
@@MattrickBT I'm pretty sure by stuffy and inflexible he meant people who don't play video games.
That's some pretty faulty logic Steven considering several of these films made changes that go againts the source material in other to please new audience memebers(including "stuffy" film critics).
Hey hey, let's cool it with the Ratchet & Clank hot takes. Crack in Time is still pretty great XD
Both R&C Future games and the R&C reboot on PS4 are must plays and universally well received by fans. To say the last game worth playing was on PS2 is being blind.
@@AlexRN I enjoyed the reboot. The Groovitron is a must use.
Ratchet and clank movie is so forgetoblee
@@dezanimatesstuff9736 It's a very stripped down version of the game. If choosing one, may as well play the reboot game.

Oh yeah, here we go, movie time!
Love this channel. Seriously thank you guys for great content with even better presentation
Really, Tekken last place? While it's nothing stellar, it's passable dumb fun, way better than any Boll movie for example
Completely agree.
They've used Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes for the basis of the rankings in their defence. I do agree though, Tekken certainly wasn't the worst.
Dead or alive was worse I think
@matt fahringer The irony of this is if you check one of their previous videos which was top 10 worst video game movies, Aline in the Dark came in at 1 for a 1% score with no mention of the Tekken movie (despite apparently having a 0%, and seriously the hell is with that?) While it would have taken more time and pain, I personally think they should stop relying on scores and other stuff to judge games or movies cause it leads to inconsistencies and watching it themselves they could better judge the movies/games then basically taking someone else's word (especially when said word is influenced by dozens of other things.
In the name of the King - Known to me and my mates as "That film where Jason Statham punches a horse".
Fun fact: there was a rip-off film of Tomb Raider also released in 2018 called "Tomb Invader." Not even joking.
Good list, a bit out of order (i.e. ranking Street Fighter II: Animated Movie low despite having good reviews🤷🏾♂️) but it's good to see all the movies listed.
Nice List, I really like these long videos :)
by the way, the footage that you used for fate/stay night unlimited blade works movie (2010) was actually from its re-adaptation into a tv series in 2014
How he said Fate/stay night is also funny to me
@@ian291 How else do you say it? Fate Backslash Stay night? Is this like .hack://sign?
God I love this channel so much. Keep up the great work guys you’re awesome!
Ratchet and Clank 3 was the last game in the series worth playing? Them's fighting words boys! Other than that, great work as always.
"Max Payne is not only the name of the movie, but describes how it feels watching it. There, now you don't have to make that joke in the comments."
I think we all stopped making that joke by 2001.
I get that the critics didn't like it, but "Double Dragon" is a really fun movie for any fan of the early ninja movies like "3 ninjas" "Surf Ninjas" "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" etc. I watched it free on Prime a while back and thoroughly enjoyed the cheesy nostalgia. It's worth watching more than most on the list
To be fair, Postal is probably the most faithful movie adaptation of a video game to date.
I'm kind of confused how this list was put together. Some films that scored high and were praised by fans like YoKai Watch, Street Fighter 2 and Fate Stay Night Heaven's feel are all ranked below films like Warcraft which has a low RT percentage and was panned by fans and critics alike. Enjoy these list videos but, just confused on how that happened
same, some films get praised (see Tales of Vesperia in the 30s) and several movies below it get bashed....just confusing.
@@CrazeeAdam I think the issue is they're just using the website scores not fan scores, which is weird. Personally while it would have taken way more time, would have liked to see them watch the movies themselves to make a list on what they thought or get a team of people to do it. Would have made for a more personal and oppionated list then going Yeah these numbers say it was bad who are we to disagree.
Yokai watch 😂🤦♂️
@@TheInhumanBeatdown still has no sense at all. They are using rotten tomatoes and metacritic, Street fighter 2 the movie has pretty good reviews from the critics in both sites however it's in the 30th position behind crap like the resident evil live action movies.
Yeah, I mean in my case I played the Fates games because of the movied lol.
Thanks for yet another glorious video
I was so happy that Detective Pikahu was well received, I loved it, my mouth was sore from smiling too hard after I left the cinema.
Wait... you put Street Fighter: The Movie BELOW both "DOA" and "Super Mario Brothers"? Clearly something is backwards here! You've picked the wrong winner, darn it!
...Actually I'm pretty sure there are no winners here.
Double Dragon is still one of the greatest bad movies ever made though. In what other film can you see Alyssa Milano force-feed spinach to a tied-up guy in a giant fatsuit and mohawk? What other movie introduces a completely random zombie fight two-thirds of the way through, and then never refers to it again? What other film sets a river on FIRE?! And listen to Robert Patrick (yes, the T-1000 was the bad guy in this movie too)'s reaction when his mooks inform him that the monks guarding the macguffin he's after cut their own tongues out rather than reveal its location. "All I wanted was monks WITH TONGUES!" he doesn't actually say. But it's basically that. Seriously, if you're going on entertainment value rather than any objective measure of quality, Double Dragon should be #1.
Not really surprised by n.1, but Persona being n.2? That put a big smile on my face!
20:05 i will fight you mate, i love practically the whole series. Even objectively speaking, tools of destruction and a crack in time were great playing and looking games that never had awful stories.
If you liked up your arsenal but didnt like any of the games released after it, you haven't given them a fair chance at all
I love these videos and I'm glad they keep doing these.
Have you done “every sonic game ranked” yet? Has to include spin-offs like Sonic Spinball and Doctor Robotbink’s Mean Bean Machine.
The scary thing is how high Super Mario Brothers landed.
tbh i liked the film
Thank you so much for the content. I really enjoy your videos. I am so thankful I found the channel. Keep up the great work! :)
How in the world can Street Fighter II The Animated Movie be so low is just...surely that's sacrilege?
I'm happy Detective Pikachu was mentioned as the best. I feel like people don't give it enough credit for how ambitious this movie was. It could have easily go for the cheap route like the sonic movie did, with the main character living in the "real world", but instead it showed us a whole world where Pokémon (from multiple generations) and humans lived together.
I guess it wasn't successful though. There's been 2 sonic movies since it came out.
@@occono3543 Unlike Sonic, Detective Pikachu didn't have a post credit scene teasing a second movie so It was a standalone story. It has been confirmed by Variety that a Pokémon live action series is being produced by Netflix, so it's probably going to be a brand new story.
@@paulaabelenda5867 I could see why they went the route they did with Sonic, though. Especially since Sonic 2 was better as both a Sonic movie and a Movie just in general. That's mainly because there's a surprising amount of buy-in with Sonic when it comes to his narrative and lore. We only stopped getting interconnected sonic stories in the main console games after Shadow the Hedgehog, in 2004. That game concluded a series of storylines that were started in 1994. Compared to pokemon, which doesn't have interconnected storylines and doesn't rely on them. So yeah, try to give me an argument that the core crux of Sonic lore (the Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald) would actually work in a film that is supposed to serve as an introduction to the world of Sonic the Hedgehog. It _could_ work, but you'd have to be a really damn good storyteller to make it convincing within a 2 hour time frame. In short, Sonic 1 basically walked so Sonic 2 could run.
Definitely would like a Pokemon movie worst to best list! 😅
go to the corner and shut up now
I remember this from the Leonard Maltin Movie Guide but his "400 funerals and no sex" line was made because he mentioned Simon Callow in his review and he has a supporting role in both Street Fighter and Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Amazing, as always.
There's a standing theory (and several attempted investigations) that Boll is involved in "tax sheltering". Essentially, if his movies don't make a return; it is classed as a tax write-off for his investors.
Thing is, if this is true then he's being used, because Boll himself seems to think he is actually good; and he blames anything and everything else for the failure of his projects.
Well then I guess I should be in a mental institution cause I’ve seen:
Detective Pikachu
Lara Croft (2001)
Lara Croft 2 (2003)
Lara Croft (2018)
Mortal Kombat
Sonic the Hedgehog
and Street Fighter
I loved every single one of those movies too
I don't even know what I need then cuz I consider that lightweight
@37:04 Street Fighter the Animated movie (76% RT) is worse than Assassin's Creed (18% RT)? Not sure I understand the logic, but I am sure this is a fun list nevertheless.
incredible video a+
I seriously wonder when the call of duty movie franchise will start considering how popular it is
Time has passed. More likely to be a Fortnite movie now.
The film industry has gone from seeing video game adaptations as money printing licences to money leaking ships, and the video game industry has gone from wanting the quick cash from a cheap film licence to respecting their IPs enough to want creative control as well as a high licence fee.
Call of Duty would cost way too much to licence and the resulting film wouldn't be unique enough to turn the massive profit a major film studio would expect (and could even turn a loss depending how crap it is).
I fail to see what a movie could bring that would make it anything resembling the games other than brand recognition of the title.
They could it based on Modern Warfare that one has a concrete StoryLine
I actually really liked ‘Postal’. It was like Uwe Boll just said, ‘F it’, and intentionally got stupid/silly with it. And it worked.
Basically his best film
Because that's Postal in a nutshell.
Great video. Well done.
You guys need to update the list within the next two years or so! Quite a number of video game movies came out since this video.
Bison’s Tuesday line alone should have street fighter higher up the list.
Street Fighter is definitely underrated on this list lol
Definitely better than doom and Prince of Persia
Agreed
Both the live action and the animated one.
Street Fighter is easily one of those "so bad it's good" movies. It's a ton of fun to watch. As a movie, I'd say Prince of Persia is better in that it's simply an alright movie, but Street Fighter is something I have no trouble watching over and over.
@@derangel9143 Cmon what casting is better than having the All American American Guile being played by JCVD. 🤣
At least we had Raul Julia, Kylie Minogue and Mulan in it 👍
Prince of Persia was great
Love your work guys. Every well list
Great job
They didn’t mention the Dirt movie based on the racing game
Technically, the Yakuza film is just called Like a Dragon. Yakuza: Like a Dragon is the name of the upcoming game in the series.
Thank You actually Yakuza the entire series is called like a dragon in Japan
Get ready for some RPG fun!
@@AlmightyPolarBear It's a fun game and the story line is nice too. But if you like Yakuza of old this is different the battle system is turn based not free battle.
I am loving the stilted attempts/general disgust/bewilderment where they're reading game titles that are completely alien to them
As someone once said, "Videogames allow you to experience things that movies can only show you."
you know what most of these movies make me feel? sick. these colour palettes and cinematography are so dry and make it look generic give me a migraine that could last for ages

Damn so close
Me too. My phone was also on 48% battery when it came on. Double triggered.
And now they're making a live action monster hunter with the same duo that brought us all those terrible R.E films...Gods protect us
This might be my favorite list you boys have ever done.
Think for the next Ranked from Worst to Best video, Ben and Peter should have Ashton read all the Japanese titles.
She's done well so far but this would be a good test of her mettle and pronunciation; not to mention seeing how long she can go before potentially cracking.
fatal fury movie being that low hurt. Love that movie.
Maybe its just me, but as a huge fan of WoW I really enjoyed Warcraft. I legitimately think that if it were given the sequels it deserved it would've been quite good

@@TheGamerFru i was a WOW fan and i hate the film with white-hot flaming passion. in fact i hated the film so much that it turned me off the game for a long time

Fatal Fury should be much higher on this list. The fight scenes are actually fun to watch, and the story was good enough for Del Toro to steal it for Hellboy II.
blame the critics
Hell. There Are two Films before the Motion Picture of Fatal Fury that are must watches before even watching this one! It’s basically a Trilogy!
Ben and Peter have learned japanese and chinese just by saying those weird movie names.
There should be an entire Patreon tier that is just nothing but Ben and Peter trying to pronounce things in Japanese.
Great list
Did y’all really ranked Mario bros above street fighter?
I still can’t believe they didn’t just make a Need For Speed movie based on the original Most Wanted. 🤦🏽♂️
They should have also undercover would make a great movie
Family and Furious is like the movie equivalent hahah
I love this channel
Assassin Creed, the movie that thinks Spain lives in an eternal sandstorm.
the name should really be from worse to not-as- worse
I would argue that Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog (and a few of the Pokemon movies but I'm biased) are worthy of "good to decent" movies.
It's not the worst, is just worse than almost everything.
@@jimllc Also the Prince of Persia: S.o.T. one is decent as it's own take on the story.
It's kinda interesting to hear about how there's popular franchises you've never even heard of, notably in Asia but especially China.
I mean I wonder when they'll start trying to reach outside of the domestic market because as I understand it they do produce some pretty cool high budget games now and then by seriously talented developers so I'd like the opportunity to buy and play them.
Especially if/when they make games that don't just have the Asian market in mind.
As I'm saying that though I forgot that we could very well be at the start of it already with games such as that wukong game that look like a very promising soulslike which happens to be a Chinese game intended to be sold globally. If you haven't seen it look it up, I'm not sure but I think it's called "black thunder: wukong" or something like that.
35:06 "You'll laugh tomorrow." I don't, I just found this amusing and puts a smile on my face at best lol
The Wing Commander Rewrite makes soooo much sense to me that film felt like it was going somewhere cool. The cast was the biggest surprise to me at the time because Katherine Heigl and FPJ don’t scream space pilots
The movie seems to be going towards a little surprise reveal and then just jumps to “No, that’s really it.”
FPJ does. Especially when you hear him in Mass Effect as James Vega.
I watched MK 1995 as a kid when it released. Good music, good action, good pace, plot was reasonable given the game. All my friends watched it too, it was awesome
Sonic is my personal favourite so far, looking forward to the sequel.
You should do a ranking of every video game based show…there are a lot of them actually (mostly animated)
Mortal Kombat games actually adapted Kano being Australian, and the Sonya Blade rivalry from the first Mortal Kombat movie.
Given the release date, Leonard Maltin is making a "Four Weddings and a Funeral" reference.
I’m seriously judging the metrics you’ve used to rank these films. Somehow Street Fighter II (the 1994 anime) with its staggering 70% on RT and unanimous fan praise is only at #30 but then at #29 we have Assassin’s Creed with 18% on RT. How in the what?
Also Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) deserved to be higher. Top 5 higher. It’s also the highest grossing videogame film in American box office history!
Yeah this list feels very poorly planned. It would have been better had they limited to like Live action only or something and actually watched the movies then using only scores and not even their own scores.
I respect your dedication to read every single title
4:13 Is it me or the glass broke before he actually hit it?
