The Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila closed its doors on July 1, 2024, primarily due to a combination of structural concerns and the need for extensive renovations. The iconic hotel, which had been a fixture in Manila for nearly five decades, was facing significant safety issues, including aging infrastructure such as burst pipes, malfunctioning elevators, and leaking air conditioning systems. These problems had accumulated over the years, making it increasingly difficult for the hotel to maintain the high standards expected of a luxury establishment.
In addition to these safety concerns, the hotel management decided that a comprehensive renovation was necessary to keep the hotel competitive in the face of newer developments in the area. This renovation, estimated to cost around $150 million, requires the hotel to be closed for an extended period. The decision to close was also influenced by ongoing negotiations with the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), which owns the land on which the hotel stands. The outcome of these negotiations, especially concerning the lease agreement, will be critical in determining the hotel's future(

The closure has affected hundreds of employees, with the hotel management setting aside funds for their separation benefits and exploring opportunities for them in other Accor-managed properties globally(
