Great video as always Justin! One update is that the TD-50KV2 is no longer available from Roland in the USA. We sold our last one a month ago and can't get any more. The TD-50XEXP is also sold out and there are none left which just happened last week.
Roland is due for a new flagship module. With the mimic pro and strata prime available, they need to level up.
They don't :-) mimic too expensive and too unavailable. While Strata sounds better, people still will buy roland due to better and more reliable pads. Roland knows this very well, they will wait till last moment and then they will release something better, maybe finally something without machine gunning but still will not be available to load custom velocity layers.
@@fallko76 hmm, good point. And especially with velocity/round robin...very true since they focus on their modelling tech.
Pfff 😂
It wouldn't be hard. Just bring the digital triggering technology to all the pads, and use the same quality samples we get from VSTs.
@@IRLguy777”just bring”… how much are you willing RG to pay for that?
Still playing my Td20k 21 years after buying it! 😂
Roland really should design their new module with a bigger, interactive screen. They also should really upgrade their file system (the way you save or load backups, kits etc.) - it's pre-DOS.
Let’s be objective… who needs big displays with Roland’s-forever-crappy-sounds?
Would rather prefer a calculator of a module but stunning realistic highly dynamic sounds. By this moment there’s a bunch of people online arguing about getting strata instead.
Hey Justin, just want to say thank you for what you do. I'm a long time watcher and your reviews and take on things have been super helpful for me as I've slowly been upgrading and experimenting with my eKit for both home and live gig use. Cheers man, you do great work
Thanks so much!! :)
Flagships are interesting because of the economic climate. Not a ton of disposable income is floating around right now for the hobbyist drummers to get the latest and greatest, and you have lots of small to mid-tier bands struggling to turn any sort of profit from touring. Not sure who the market is at this point for a $7 - $10 kit, especially if they already have something like the TD-50 or another brands flagship. And besides, what else could be put in a kit now that is not pure marketing?
This is the biggie right now. While the economy is recovering, the amount of disposable cash for the average consumer is at a low point. Part of the reason for the volatility.
The market is churches and education, music houses. It’s a worthy investment for them to get their stage volume down in a way that doesn’t ruin the experience of the drummer, causing them to disengage. Those markets are strong. Hobbyist drummers come in a diverse range of income, from literally playing on buckets to lawyers that keep a kit at home, and it’s gonna be nice.
But we still see these kits everywhere so people are clearly buying them
I realize I’m off subject and a bit of an outlier, but I spent small dollars on a Yamaha TCS pad kit base model and having owned several Roland kit’s including the TD-30, I’d be hard pressed to give up the excellent Yamaha sounds and TCS pads for a Roland kit. Yes the Roland’s look great but I’m only using this kit for practice. Full disclosure, I cheated and swapped out the Kick with a Pearl 18”x12” and put everything on my Gibraltar chrome rack, so it looks great. Bottom line for me though is the amazing drum sounds coming through my Sennheiser NC headphones and the feel of those TCS pads. To each their own though.
That´s all very likely to happen...and yes Pearl....the Mimic Pro module also seems to be discontinued, at least in Europe.
Thanks for the information I may get an e-kit next year not sure.
I own the Roland VAD 706 kit and the DWe kit. What I would like to see is more of the DW Soundworks program integrated into the TD-50X or newer TD-XXX modules, especially the drum and cymbal sounds!!
Those are some serious kits. Which of those you prefer and why?
@@Tom-sd2vi DWe kit! Real acoustic tom sizes, no wires, can change from electronic to acoustic, memory locks for toms and floor tom legs, one adjustment for kick drum legs/spurs. Cymbals are a little loud from the metal surface.
I love 2Box to launch a new larger module. More inputs, more outputs, larger screen, use the newly developed compressed files with increased memory. If posibile allow inputs of the competitors hi-hat multi pin cables or USB digital hats.
ATV's coolest product is the AFrame. A similar product with robust positional sensing to drive effects and fully synthesized sound would be an amazing creative tool.
the Behringer Syncussion SY-1 is not just for sequencers.
I would make a rack for 3 of them, ( one for snare / rim , then kick and 3 toms, through an eDRUMIin ), and just use a sample pad for a cymbal module.
716 is announced🎉
Thanks for the overview, Justin! I want to see how the DWe does from the technology robustness POV, as well as the new Zildjian offering, especially the cymbals. You know that's my pain point as a gigging drummer, so much so that I've been playing more edrums and acoustic cymbals lately. Bottom line, though: The majority of drummers don't have $7-10k to drop on a high-end ekit. I'll stick with the DIY route with my cobbled-together Extreme Drums triggers, Roland TD-30 and SD3, which I'll put up against any packaged kit.
So is this a bad time to buy VAD504, or will the KD-27 module get replaced at the same time as the KD-50 module?
Justin, I think you've overlooked one thing that I believe gives Roland the impetus to release a new flagship model when it does, and that is when they have something that is so innovative and revolutionary that it sets a new benchmark. When the TD-50 was first released, it came with three digital inputs but only two digital instruments, the snare drum and ride cymbal. I KNEW the hi-hat couldn't be too far behind, but I was surprised that they upgraded the module to the TD-50X when they released the digital hi-hat, plus released the TD-27 which also utilized the three digital instruments. (Side note: I tried to buy the hi-hats when they were first released, but because of the pandemic and supply-chain issues from chip manufacturers, it took me a whole year to actually receive them.) But in addition, there were so many variations of set-ups released with the TD-50 including custom hardware options. They also had the wood shells available in Black finish, and also offered packages to just buy the digital snare and ride cymbal with a TD-50 module. I think there was also a package with digital hi-hats bundled with the TD=27 module, and then they also released the TD-50X with options for wood shells in four different colors. The three modules gave so many different set-up options that it was possible to create a custom configuration that was unique and individual. So now, the question becomes, what else would you want in your kit? The digital hi-hat made sense, but a digital bass drum? Not so much! So what would make ME, for example, spend another $7500 - $10,000+ on a new kit when my current kit is already state-of-the-art? Well, about the only thing I can think of is making an electronic kit as easy to set up for a gig as an acoustic kit. Wireless is about the only way I can think of to achieve that. Connecting my pads to my module takes a lot of time, but a wireless version that just automatically connected everything when turned on would be so much faster. That would require a complete replacement of my kit, with not only a new controller module but also all new pads. When I got my TD-50 kit, I added the cymbal pads from my TD-30KV kit, but none of my current pads would work with a wireless controller. If I were a working drummer, I would probably buy a wireless kit as soon as it became available. Other than that, I wouldn't feel any particular need to replace my current wired flagship custom kit.
It must do because here in Germany all VAD706 kits sure sold out because they dropped it to €5000 at most e drum shops. When I e e kits. They told me they had bought all the stock from their stores. Great videos 👍🥁
When I enquired about getting one, Thomann said..
I'm new to e drums. But I'm surprised there aren't more shell color options for VAD 507.
Would love to see a review of Sunhouse and Nord Drum!
Great insights, as usual! Thanks!
I currently have an 8 year old TD15. I’m itching to get a TD27 but also thinking it might be wise to see what Roland comes out with next. I get why they do it but it’s kinda frustrating they give no warning on what’s coming.
This guy KNEW IT
Call it a suspicion ;)
Editing is awesome
what a great video, good job \m/
Thanks for the video
Wireless with ability to load SD3….. it would rule the world ❤
What about DrumTec? Do you think the DrumTec Pro 3 is a worthy kit to compare against Roland VAD706?
Are you going to do a Zildjian Alchem-e review?, i have an old yamaha DTX52something... im thinking of upgrading and the zildjian has me very excited, but im not going to pull the trigger until i watch a GOOD review.
As an EU VAD706 owner due to the massive price drop... I love it. But the Module feels ancient for sure! It's still very powerful, very logical. But from a UI perspective, I can see the drawbacks that other models are tackling like Zildjian, Strata, Gewa. Everyone loves touch screen and easy UI's these days, Roland UI almost requires a Udemy course to get true value out of it lol. They have some really powerful tech that others don't have like digital hi-hat/ride/snare but they lack positional sensing toms, 3 zone cymbals and a modern UI module and some other fancy gimmicks other companies might be doing. Has to be a new line coming but I think you make a good point about DWe breathing room. Can't even see them on sale in Europe at the minute and maybe that's what is coming out next. Can still buy Roland TD-50KV2's in EU for 6699-7499EUR so they still have flagship models available. It is actually insane to me that the VAD706 is cheaper than TD-50KV2, I know you get the extra tom pad but outside of that.... VAD kicks it's ass :D
Good video man, even though I've bought my kit and won't be upgrading for a long time, I find all edrum news so awesome! Be interesting to see how well Zildjian can compete with DWe.
If I found one of these for 2k new should I buy it?
I'd say Alesis is in prime position to do something that gives Roland something to worry about. If they work out all the bugs and reliability issues, and priced right, they'd take Roland for a ride.
Thomann has delisted all VAD-drumsets for some reason, there's just one B-stock set
Yamaha need to consolidate the 3-tier DTX6 line into one all-TCS kit. Be more giving with the TCS surface and make 10" pads with it again, maybe in a sleeker profile.
And release a controller App for the DTXPro module. Would allow users to deep dive into settings with an intuitive UI.
I'm dying to hear something from Yamaha, I'm gearing up to buy a TDK8K with the TCS heads, but I want to know if something is coming?!?!
What about mini 2.0. is that gonna be coming to drum kits any time soon ?
I’ve been wondering about this too
Anyone would like to comment on the issues regarding the strata prime. I really want to change my e-drum and I am hesitating between the strata prime and the Roland td27kv2. Thanks 😊
I sure hope a new flagship line is in the works. I am finally in a place where i can afford to buy a new T-50kv, and I cant find a single dealer with any in stock. Hopfully, they keep the kv line.. There are some of us that prefer our edrums to look like edrums and not try and mimic acoustics.
Do you think they will do any kind of update for the strike pro se
It will be great if roland would release an acoustic look kit at the price range of $2000.
never gonna. no one is. why should a premium brand do that. They're not LEMON.
@@ledoov what about efnote mini $2.100?
@@azizfilhobad sensors, hi hat really bad. Sounds are mid.
@@drumxlion thanks.
@@azizfilhonah man that’s ridiculous, I have the mini in my office and have had just about every flagship model other that Gewa, these things are the best triggering edrums I’ve ever played. Super dynamic, super accurate and musical. I was floored when I got to play them and am every time I sit down to play. The hi hats are equal to my Roland VH-14D. I bought the mini because my church returned its DWe (the cymbals were too loud and felt horrible) and then they bought the EFNOTE PRO 703. Efnote’s H14 hi hats were better than my VH-14D so I pulled the trigger on the mini. I’ve now ordered the PRO 700 and am going to augment it with the mini. Efnote is doing things people aren’t even aware of yet, but it’s insane how everything they make works with everything they make, all of it.
Check this vid at 3:10 and hear what the sensors and hi hats sound like, he’s playing super musical and they are tracking perfectly. Very inspiring little kit!

Just as an indication, in some shops in Spain you can get the KD220 MS for half its price, around 800USD, today. This is not event b stock, they actually place the order with Roland and tipically have to wait for 10-11 days, which means Roland is getting rid of the stock and something is definitely coming up
Hi Justin, I'm curious what triggers are you using atm for your kit? Thanks!
Out of all these flagship modules there are only 2.5 that allow importing multi velocity samples. They are the Mimic Pro & 2Box this including rebanded Drumit modules(ddums, Kat & Fame) and Yamaha for the half because they have it but have not enough memory for it. Roland, Gewa, Alesis need to offer importing sample with a memory of at least 64G or preferable 128G but best would be 256G. Computers with VST can crash mid gig but a module loaded with VST and/or own samples won't crash. Professional drummers needed more choices than these 2.5 modules that allow importing their samples when playing there big shows.
It all will come down to sounds and cymbals. Fact is it's not that hard or expensive to build an acoustic looking e-kit. The module is the key, sound quality, cymbal quality, thats what makes a kit stand out.
A wireless VAD. They can drop the DWE triggers in a VAD kit.
I still play TD50x and it's still one of the best modules, snappy, responsive, super customizable. Interface sucks and I wish you could build your kits on a Mac or pc and upload them to your module faster. OR a mobile app on iPad ? software in my mind is where the innovation is, and I'm not talking DWe or VST software, I'm talking module. I feel the Zildjian Alchem-e seems to have done a nice job there with big screen, etc... as do a few other like Alesis Prime. old school monochromatic LCD screens the size of a stamp suck. However I'd maybe like to see ROLAND take the DWe wireless take too though the digital pads are still best in class and I personally don't mind cables all that much in the end once setup. it just works and I could maybe keep my shells and just upgrade module should they update soon.
Sadly most of the music stores that we get equipment from have been sold to private equity firms. We are paying too much for new gear. because of it. They own most music stores so they can make the prices the same at all vendors they have absorbed.
I think it will be 2025 0r 2026 until Roland issues a new flagship. In my opinion, when they release a new product, it is usually pioneering stuff, like digital the VH-14 hi-hats for example, or their digital snare (which I own and to me it is the best digital snare drum). Mybe it will take another year or two for them to release something and maybe it will be jaw dropping, like an all digital VAD kit that is completely wireless with a state of the art touch screen module. I wont be able to afford one, but I will look forward to a discount on the TD-50X
Hello 65 drums. I have a question. I have the 506 and I want to upgrade. But I dont know if I should wait for a new version of this drum set or should I get a drum set from drumTech like the drum tech pro 3 ?
I have seen they are amazing drums but still I think I should wait.
Let me know what you think .
Vad 706 or Efnote 7x?
Justin what about Ddrum and 2Box aren’t they working on something together?
Yeah I covered the new module in a video a few months ago. I just didn’t include them here. ddrum has had an iffy track record lately.
2Box is rebranding there Drumit 3 & Drumit 5 mk2 with ddrums, Kat Precussion and Fame

Any news from Simmons drums?
None that I've heard
This is like the wait for GTA VI, lol.
Roland should definitely reconsider the price they are asking for !
Roland is owned by DW now if I recall right?
Roland bought dw. Roland is the bigger richer company
GUESS WE HAVE OUR ANSWER!!!!! #YourCrystalBallIsWorking
I think the td-17 line is more outdated and will be replaced before the td-50/vad700 lines.
It amazes me there is a large enough market for 5-6K and higher kits. I sold my Strike Pro and my acoustic kit when we moved and I’m in the market for something new. EfNote 3 is the front runner. I tried the Strata yesterday, great kit except for that god awful hi-hat that feels like you’re hitting a brick. I’m holding out for more Zildjin reviews and crossing my fingers they sell a cymbal pack only as they do seem like they’ll be far and away the best cymbals out there.
The 5-6K edrum market has been a thing since the 80s (adjusted for inflation) Just like the acoustic drum world. I'm just thankful I'm not a huge car guy. Because THAT hobby is much much worse when it comes to money.
+1 to Zildjian releasing a "cymbal pack only" version of their e-drums/e-cymbals.
Why not sell a DWe with rubber cymbals, SD-3 pre-loaded on a dedicated PC (instead of a module) & with all of the pads & settings and sounds all pre-configured as ultimate default settings set the way 90% of the drummers would like straight out of the box instead of the crappy defaults the kits come with currently. That way they would sound and respond awesome straight out of the box! And, not have to have a computer engineering degree to get things set the way they should already be in the first place & have to spend 30 hrs getting it all setup & sounding great! Now that would sell. No fuss. Just setup, turn on & start sounding super awesome right out of the box on each kit. I would spend my money on that!
With AI being used everywhere now. I'd like to see a better Roland sound modelling engine with midi 2.0. This would make VST's obsolete.
it would be great to be able to load VST in your module directly. what if Roland partnered with TOONTRACK and made it all work seamlessly I'd pay for that.
@@ledoov Toontrack is far too expensive for Roland. That's why they brought Perfect Drums a.k.a SoundWorks.
Does anyone else see this as just an incredibly dysfunctional market? Like one drops $5k+ on a flagship e-drum kit and there's no incremental upgrade path? You're just expected to buy the next highend thing if you want improvements. Lots of competitors and nothing that actually really goes toe to toe with Roland on flat out getting the job done. Nobody, with the possible exception of Zildjian, nails cymbals. Modules that are priced like expensive computers with very little expansion and relatively little ability to apply a next generation module to a prev gen drum kit. I don't see how this works well for anyone except Roland. For a great venue kit, one wants something like DWe or Sensory Percussion plus Zildjian's cymbal setup, preferably going into a low-latency module with a well established setup for a drummer to load their own kits and special sounds/effects when they get there.
Everything EFNOTE makes is forward compatible and they’ve said they are committed to that. They don’t have the depth of marketing as their larger competitors but are fully making products that expand other products, yet they don’t play dangle the carrot. Great company so far and I’ve never been taken care of better by a company, been buying flagships for decades and drum, produce and mix FOH.
Touch screen module for sure. 120hz screen refresh rate.
Why tf would you need a 120hz screen on an e drum? Last time I checked you couldn't game on it
@@meislit9217 you want it sluggish then?
No more fake plastic overly processed sounds give us sound at least as good as the prime sound wise the last 2 generations of Roland did not do it for me but you know me Justin I like the live raw unprocessed atv style samples, even on the mimic I’m using the atv styled kits they later released but I’m I different breed that’s not gonna be most people I covered a kiss tune that’s got a drum solo in it on my channel if you’re bored or you wanna make fun of my getto setup lol 😂 ruclips.net/video/hCR0_79pZpw/видео.htmlsi=tPvL2JVNK_Yk9COV
Nice! I love how raw and natural your drums sound. Mimic pro?
For almost $10k Cdn..... nope. DWe at over $12k.... also no.
What about Roland releasing a DWe with rubber cymbals instead of those metallic ones. Say maybe a DWe V2 and bring the kit down a $1,000 or so. That would be a good move! Or, offering a Zildjian acoustic cymbal pack with it. Those metallic electronic cymbals suck!
I played one in a band. I didnt care for it. I hated the cymbal sounds. And the triggering. We had to send one cymbal to be replaced. Not a fan.
Wireless VADs.
;)
not first
roland is overpriced you're better off with buying a cheap shell pack something like a mapex and buying drum Tech Groove bars triggers or even Jobecky triggers if you want something a little bit cheaper. I would recommend a Roland KDA 22 for your bass drum Roland symbols are fine lemon symbols are fine but I don't think buying the full roland kit is worth the price
This is a Toyota vs Lamborghini type conversation. Not a single person needs a Lambo, it's just fun if you can afford it. Most people, myself included are better off with the cheaper option. As for the Drumtec groove bar, I like it and use one inside my own snare drum. But Drumtec does hold back their very best triggers for the Drumtec Pro 3 shell packs. So even they want you to spend a mountain of money for the best of what they can offer.
@@65Drums true very true
First
i think ppl care about good sounds...they make great equipment but a horrible sound library.
To me almost all drum modules are junk. One day someone will make a deal with superior drummer (toontracks) and have SD3 pre installed on a module for free... Toontracks will make money selling expansions of the SDX/EZX and consumers will have the best sounds at no extra cost. Each company that uses sounds are wasting time and money on junk sounds that in the end make their product somewhat useless. A simple HD with a basic mini wallet sized computer with a bluetooth connection to your phone/computer tablet to control the program and off we go...
A company already tried to make a deal with toontrack, and got turned down. I can't say who, but from what I heard, that company isn't interested in getting into the hardware game. Which I understand, but it's a shame. Because that module would INSTANTLY become the best drum module ever created.
@@65Drums Right, but if someone simply made it... and then bought rights to SD3 for a fraction of the cost or free... then Toontracks would sell crap tons of SDX over the years as people grow out from the basic SD3 as good as it is. So yeah, too bad =-(
Maybe you should give it a try. Not hard to get people on Upwork to make you a nice compact computer with bluetooth that YOU can sell with SD on it if you make a deal with Toontracks.
I'm busy building a massive 7200 sqft commercial space out or yeah, I'll look into it...
ROLAND MODULES SUCK!! SMAPLES ARE GARBAGE!!! PEARL MIMIC BLOWS EVERYTHING AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Roland is probably buying Zildjian. I have no knowledge of this, but if they did that they'd have the best of everything. Roland cymbals have always been their weak spot.
There is a 0% chance that happens.
