The audio books are so well done, I wish that Amazon would just make each chapter into an episode and add animation. I’m sure that would blow Rings of Power out of the water at a negligible fraction of the cost.
My all time favorite series, so many great lines. "Polka will never die!" "Life is Journey. Time is a River. The Door is Ajar." "The building was on fire, and it wasn't my fault." "If the world burns because of that then so be it. Me and the kid will roast some marshmallows." And of course: "I used the knife. I saved a child. I won a war. God forgive me."
Only book ever which has ever been able to make my eyes a bit wet (during the death of two people I won't name)the writing is fantastic...also best quote is the building one it's soooo harry
Forgot to mention one of the short stories is told in the DOG'S perspective and it's glorious. Also glad you mentioned James Marsters because, yes. If nothing else he IS Harry AND Bob the skull. If they ever do another live action he needs to at least voice Bob.
If you enjoy audiobooks I HIGHLY recommend the audiobooks of this series. Marsters is incredible. Plus if you want more from Butcher I thoroughly enjoyed the Codex Alera series. Fun fantasy world with cool creatures and an interestingly unique magic system. The audiobook version is also good, narrated by Kate Reading.
When my mom bought a house i was 17. To my surprise i found a book in a box, it was Dead Beat.. That was a turning point in my life and that was my introduction to Dresden. I've read all the books since then and my life seems more comfortable since then.❤
Dead beat is the perfect introduction to Dresden. It was the turning point for me, from "one of my favorite series" to "this is my favorite series.". "Polka will never die" and Sue were just too iconic to gloss over.
The best description of this series is from my brother- "It is Harry Potter for adults." It may have things from children's books, but it all is a very adult life and death themes.
I love that through the course of the books the characters, not just Harry, all grow and change, getting stronger and stronger in a realistic way, as the stakes get higher and higher. There is never a "training montage" or "mystery potion" that gives a massive undeserved power boost. It's more like, they spend a book finding a mystery and 2 books later they find that the mystery actually sets a chain of actions in motion that 2 books later resolve in an ally teaching Dresden a trick that 2 books later becomes a weapon or a tool Dresden can actually use every now and again. I love seeing character going from small and innocent but curious and smart to adult independent and reliable, or from just your average un-assuming kind of wimpy but likable human, growing into this bad ass demi angel warrior having threesomes with werewolves xD. I know it's crazy (and the series is not the monkey male fantasy all the time) but there is just something soo cool to see character you like get stronger and stronger and defeating foes you only heard about being whispered at 10 books before. I think the world develops so well, that you end up even liking some of the recurring villains, so much so that when the story goes into a different direction and then like a year later when the story goes back to normal and Harry is chatting with a villain and they casually comment how he has been fighting one of Dresden's allies this whole time and the ally is now actually a dependable person instead of the jackass we know we kind of get "oh wow, I wonder what happened to make him change and grow" and then we actually eventually have a time to talk to that side character and he has all this complex things going on in his life because the world is not just about the main character and is alive and grows with him. That's how you end up feeling the world is real and the characters are likable.
I agree. The series is the best example I've found of a character ( and his companions, and enemies, and his obstacles ) leveling up over the course of the series, and done in such a way that it really feels reasonable. Also Jim has thus far kept from making Harry become over powered compared to his foes. I highly recommend the series to anyone that will listen to me.
Word of warning: the first 2-3 books are the worst of the series. The great part about that is that almost every book is better than the previous one. But on the other hand, it will absolutely scare people away too soon. My advice: If you think the first books are good or okay: keep reading. If you absolutely hate book 1 or still don't like it after book 3, I think it's better to stop. If you're on the fence and are still not convinced by Dead Beat, then this series will never convince you.
@@Sentinelll Start at Dead Beat. Everything before that is... not great. The first few are the worst, but Dead Beat is the first really good one in my opinion. Love this book series. All the colorful cast of characters around Harry and how he bounces off of them with pop culture references really make the series for me. I like how each installment expands the world and usually puts Harry in an even more dire circumstance. I have yet to listen to the series, but have been told that I should.

You did a good job with the editing. I thought maybe you would have at least 5,000 subscribers so I was surprised to see it's less than 1,000. Keep up the good work and you will grow for sure!
After the Malazan video I was excited to see what other videos you had, and was left dissapointed. But youtube recomendations led me to you once again this time i subscribed just to be sure i dont miss anything😉
I started the series at book 6, then went back and read the rest of them. I’m glad that I discovered the DF after both Butcher and Marsters had gotten into their groove - if I’d started with the first couple of books, I don’t think I would have stuck with it. But the series is 🔥🔥🔥 from book 3, on. Favorite book series ever.
This is my all time favorite series and you did a great job on pitching it. The Dresden Files is truly a masterpiece, painted before you a few strokes at a time. You might also want to try out the Cradle series by Will Wight. Very similar in tone, humor, and character depth. Very different in plot and world.
Hello, you got me to start Malazan it's a bit different than my comfort zone (Wheel of Time). But I'm really starting to love Gardens of the Moon. Thank you!!
Malazan is a different style of writing ... it has great world building and story lines, but you just don't get invested in the characters like you do for Song of Ice & Fire or Brandon Sanderson's works. If you can appreciate that style of writing, I suggest that you stick it out. I don't know that I would ever re-read them, but I do not regret reading them through once.
@@raswartz I am not saying they are not well written, they just don't seem relatable. More abstract. It is difficult for me to articulate, but it is easier to feel invested in characters from authors like Dresden, Sanderson, Hobbs.
@@jenniferj5324 Because most writers will straight-up tell you a character's motivation. Erikson shows you their behavior, and leaves clues for you to work out what their motivation was. This leaves something for the reader to discover on their own, so when you get it, it really hits hard.
Good job with the review. Harry’s views are what you would expect considering who raised him. At least he was capable of growth and maturity. It took me at least three books before I realized that there was a larger plot underneath the series. Had to go back and listen to the first three again to start to see the patterns. We were encouraged to listen to music or something where I worked to protect our ears. Spent a sizable chunk on Audible trying to catch up and then keep up with Dresden’s adventures.😂
A marvellous little video here. I greatly enjoyed it, all of it, even the silly graphics. Similar to Jim Butcher's sometimes childlike sense of humour. I recently used the Dresden files to introduce my wife to fantasy lit. It worked. She was immediately addicted, forcing me to buy all 17 of the novels so that she can read them all in order of publication. She says she isn't interested in the short stories. However, I am feel pretty certain that when she finishes Battle Ground, she will be chasing me out the door to get the short story collections. I will have to check out the audio versions via used book stores. We spend so much on books, going to expensive audio books would have us on the street.
I saw the TV series first and then discovered the books. The Books. I have all of them, some in hard back, and I read through allllll of them every time a new one comes out. And yeah, Marsters is perfect.
Until the parts about Marsters and the TV series, this was one of the best videos ever. I've been reading Dresden Files for 15 years, have all the novels, short stories and graphic novels, and have read all the microfiction online, and on every other points you've captured the essence of the series. Thank you!
I discovered the audiobooks a year ago and when I say discovered, I mean it. In Germany it is like this series never existed, you don't find it in book stores and nobody has ever heard about it. The rights of the German translations belong to a company that has went bankrupt I think so there's that. Long story short: Everytime I'm in a bigger bookstore I ask if they've got some Dresden files books and when I hear the inevitable 'no' I'm giving them my 'I thought you where a bookstore'-face. Some day it'll work 😅
Nervt
I just started book 6 which begins with Harry rescuing puppies and having some difficulty finding a home for one of them. Please tell me this puppy becomes the large dog you spoke of in the end of the video.
I am reading Dresden files for the second time. I LOVE it. Also, the Kate Daniels books are good. I read those twice too. Does anyone know of any other good urban fantasy?
I was actually introduced to the series by the tv show, and love the books. I've also gotten a hold of the TTRPG and Cooperative Card Game, both by Evil Hat. The entire world created by the books is amazing.
I believe I've read everything (...and listened. James Marsters rules!) up to date and I'm champing for the next book. I suppose I'll give the tv series a look.
If the two short story collections are *still* not enough, there are a few more on Butcher's website. There are also two more in separate anthologies, one from Toot's pov in "Heroic Hearts" and one from Mouse's pov in "Instinct: An Animal Rescuers Antholgy". Lastly, there is a DF novella: "The Law".
Love your overview of the series. Great job without any spoilers. So happy you didn't forget to mention Mister & Mouse. I wonder if you liked the Kate Daniels books?
@@ValhallaAMV I hear you, but that's the thing that bothers me the most. We keep making these stories where heroes have these slave-friends and people are ok with it. I'm ready for a more progressive imagination. I think that the new Battlestar Galactica series finally got it right. Humans generated an artificially intelligent species and enslaved them. The subsequent war was epic... and justified.
Bob The Skull is not a human. He's a Spirit of Air. The skull is his home. Whoever (anybody) holds his skull is his master. Those are "the rules", in the Nevernever/ Fairy sense. The "slave" quip is just tgat, a quip. Bob The Skull has never been human or alive the way people are. It would be better to describe him as a lecherous, pithy, whiny Super Artificial Intelligence. Edit: IIRC nobody in the books calls Bob a slave unless they are *sorely* mistaken about what Bob is.
Technically Bob is controlled by who holds his skull, but if I remember correctly Harry outright says he can't and/or won't actually enslave him per se. He does give him orders, but he also pays Bob in sleazy romance novel and personal time possessing the cat to go to strip clubs and such. While Bob has many complaints he voluntarily helps him regardless.

Just sad that not a lot of people upload Dresden files content on RUclips (I love watching them), so this video is much appreciated! Subbed!
I'm obsessed with the Dresden Files.... I only found it a few months ago but I'm so hooked
I finished the serie about a half a year ago, i loved it so much. The lore is so powerfull and the character development. Can't wait how see how the story unfolds further.
You did a good job with the editing. I thought maybe you would have at least 5,000 subscribers so I was surprised to see it's less than 1,000. Keep up the good work and you will grow for sure!
Dont forget that the Only Wizard in the Chicago Phone Book also Rode a fricken' Zombie Dinosaur. O.o
Love Dresden and Marster. He brings him alive.
Thank you! I love these books. I've only listened to one of the audiobooks - I prefer reading - but I agree that James Marsters does a fantastic job.
This is my all time favorite series and you did a great job on pitching it. The Dresden Files is truly a masterpiece, painted before you a few strokes at a time.
You might also want to try out the Cradle series by Will Wight. Very similar in tone, humor, and character depth. Very different in plot and world.
These videos are fantastic. Just subscribed. Can’t wait to see you tackle more of these great fantasy series
POLKA NEVER DIES!
Fantastic break down of the series.
Awesome video!
Hello, you got me to start Malazan it's a bit different than my comfort zone (Wheel of Time). But I'm really starting to love Gardens of the Moon. Thank you!!
go go go
Malazan is a different style of writing ... it has great world building and story lines, but you just don't get invested in the characters like you do for Song of Ice & Fire or Brandon Sanderson's works.
If you can appreciate that style of writing, I suggest that you stick it out. I don't know that I would ever re-read them, but I do not regret reading them through once.
@@jenniferj5324 Disagree. Characters in Malazan are incredibly well-written.
This series has consumed my life
I saw the TV series first and then discovered the books. The Books. I have all of them, some in hard back, and I read through allllll of them every time a new one comes out. And yeah, Marsters is perfect.
i love this series man, can you make one about the cosmere maybe?
Found Dresden years ago. Still revisit them.
Zoo Day is told from 3 perspectives not just Harry's
Until the parts about Marsters and the TV series, this was one of the best videos ever. I've been reading Dresden Files for 15 years, have all the novels, short stories and graphic novels, and have read all the microfiction online, and on every other points you've captured the essence of the series. Thank you!
Lol, had me for a minute there when you said each book was basically a standalone.
I adore Michael, he's is such a fantastic character
Also if you need a really quick read there are two really good anthologies Side Jobs and Brief Cases which are so much monster of the week fun.
I've read the first one and quite enjoy it! I need to read more...
I'm holding off on my fourth listen of the series for when the next book comes out.
I absolutely love these books I just finished cold days so I have three left
Great video. Thanks for it!
Malazan, and now Dresden. You have great taste.
Please tell me this puppy becomes the large dog you spoke of in the end of the video.
if you really want to know
the final line of book 6 is "Hey. Why did you get large-breed Puppy Chow?" so uh...come to your own conclusions
@@jakebishop7822 knew I wouldn't have to look too hard to find you here lol
@@Isaiah_McIntosh thats cause this video rules
@@jakebishop7822 The best first and last lines of any book, ever. "The building was on fire and it wasn't my fault" is the first line.
@@telynns8490my personal favorite was the opening line to Changes. Hit me like a freight train.
I love this series !!!
I just want to say this is a really really good video
Great overview of the series.
The TV show was tragic. I wish they had stayed true to the books
ITS AN AMAZING SERIES I LOVE IT SO MUCH 1000000/10 WOULD RECOMEND
It would be awesome to have a series with marsters playing Harry.
Stand alone stories for a series? Guess I'll try them out.
Bob is Harry’s “assistant slave.” Wow. Harry is such a good guy.
it's complicated, but long story short, Bob is more than okay with it
@@ValhallaAMV I hear you, but that's the thing that bothers me the most.
While Bob has many complaints he voluntarily helps him regardless.
another great video on this channel
The audio books are the best for sure James Marster nails it
DresdoVision! I love it!
Your videos are amazing! I can see an awesome channel growing before my very eyes... do you have anything you plan to cover next?
Yes. Well done!!!
I love these.
I remember in high-school one of my dorm mates was always reading these. After finishing thr first book I get why
life is a journey
time is a river
the door is ajar
I love this series
