After 4 days without power due to the wildfires in N. CA. (Smith River Complex) it was interesting that when power returned... it was pushing 133 volts for about 18 hours. My EMS-50 advised me by shutting down, and the error code. Ran my 3500 generator until the next day when the voltage stabilized. Love it!
We didn't win the giveaway, so we purchased the surge guard and locking cable and got them today. Placed the order one morning and it shipped the same day. Great service from TechnoRV. Thanks for recommending them!
I removed our factory installed refrigerator 6 years ago after 3 recalls and inability to keep stuff cold, purchased a 30 X 24" "real" frig from HD and filled up the 5-1/2" space with a spice cabinet, it did help that I owned a cabinet shop.
Chad.....you are one intelligent man....Your knowledge is off the charts.....It is so informative even tho I have no clue about anything solar or electrical.. Seems as rhough solr is the future....Wonderful video...Happy travels...
I run the same brand in our momentum but we use the green labeled one, it’s installed behind the false wall so it doesn’t get stolen hanging on the power pedestal. But the main reason we went the other route was you can unplug both ends if it fails and then just plug the cable together untill you get a new one and your not having to take all kinds of stuff apart just takes a couple extra electrical components! Great info!
I got a lot out of this video. Seemingly simple concept and hardware, but for a guy like me it's never so simple. This one is a keeper in my favorites older for that time I need it. Thanks again and don't forget that cheeseburger in paradise when you get to San Diego. Happy travels.
Chad - watched this video today and agree TechnoRV is a great source and great people. One key thing you may have over looked comparing the two (Southwire and Progressive) and it was the deciding factor for me to go with Southwire. Southwire is the ONLY brand that protects both LINE side and LOAD side! I have seen wires shake loose in an RV and cause issues and even hot skin on the RV where the EMS would not detect it. Southwire WILL. Keep up all the good videos, ride safe - tell Tara - Love the Scott Calvin hat! I know you will get it... Cheers - Brian & Brandelyne
Thank you so much for this video. I know it’s three years later but I just ordered my RV and you helped me change my mind. Initially, I thought I wanted a hardwired unit but now I realized one for the pedestal will work better for me.
This is one of the up grades we are going to be doing very soon. We have the same Momentum as you. I contacted you about going thru the Master bed room cabinet with the solar, about a year ago.It worked great for us.
I got the Progressing portable a few weeks after picking up my 5th wheel. It tripped one afternoon on one phase. I went out, switched the resorts breaker off, and back on. It reset my Progressive EMS. The EMS probably saved me some burned out circuit boards.
That was still above my pay grade. When it comes to electrical stuff . It's like me jumping into the spacecraft and landing on the moon. I can plug a wire into an outlet. Byt I do like the the surge protector on the inside. No more worrying about the one at the pedestal .
Enjoyed your video. Adding one to my 'need' list. Good pointing out that not everyone is comfortable working on mains voltage that can vaporize you in a instant.
Am a big fan! I was watching your video over the World Series. Missed a two run blasts from the Astros but was well worth it. I really enjoy your videos. Wish I could increase my chances to win but this is all I got. I choose not to have any other social media. Fingers crossed. Side note- I do have a 50 amp service on my trailer. Thanks again for sharing the tips. Safe travels.
Had our Acron surge protector for almost a year. Just went out and looked at it and it seems it has not been working! What!!!! This whole time? Jeez. Just bought the one from Techo RV. Great video guys!
Hey love your channel we are picking up our RV next Monday and can't wait to hit the road. Because of you guys you made it a much easier transition. I hope we didn't miss the drawing. Thanks anyway if we did.
For years now I've avoided a surge protector for our RV as just more 'stuff' that we don't need. But after hearing it from a fellow with your valuable experience, we will get one.
OMG why didn't Denver watch this FIRST !!! ..... I told him to order this but NOOOOOO he knew better.... 2 fried things later and I've told you to watch that video ..... thank you so much for making me RIGHT !!!
I really enjoy your channel. The trips and views on the bike are great, The out takes are awesome! I don’t RV but I would love to. The technical info is great. I want to thank you for your service and I Have so much respect for you!
We went with the 50A Surge Guard Portable Total Electrical Protection 34951 because we camp at many state parks and other parks and only have 30 amp service. We added the $50 wireless monitor option that allows us to see how much power we are using in the coach and to turn off things if we get close to 30 amps of use. We also like the quick 10-second analysis to access to this model, compared to 128 seconds on the internal model.
I prefer the Power Watchdog over other brands because you can replace this unit's blown surge module without having to replace the entire unit itself. Plus the PW has Bluetooth connectivity.
Thanks Chad and Tara for another great how to video. Once again I realize how little we actually know after all these years rving. Love to actually meet you guys one day.
Nice job and thank you, love your videos. I use the inline unit and it as saved us a few time with a ground fault issues. I like the inline because it gives you total protection from shore power, solar and generators. I drilled my own hole in the floor for a wire run and added a string in the run to help guide additional wiring.
I did a lot of research got the Hughes PWD30-EPO with auto shut off. You can replace the blown component without having to buy a new device. Component is like $20. I want a hat too. Hahahaha Tell Daisy to go eat that was funny.
I plugged in to a 220v 30a plug before. Was my wiring mistake. Fried my microwave, so I definitely need a plugin surge protector. Ok and a class in electrical wiring too.. Great #giveaway I truly need this.
I love our surgeguard. I do get a little scared in some campgrounds that do look sketchy as far as security because ours is the first generation model without that lockable secure tab. Wish there was a way to get one installed on our current one if we don't win the new one. Thank you for sharing and good luck to all the entries.
Excellent video and thanks for talking about both vendor’s models. I don’t need the giveaway so please don’t include me in the list. I just purchased the Southwire 34951 50Amp model with the add on remote monitor as it seems to have the best Energy dissipation protection (up to 4200 Joules). The 34931 (30 Amp) has 2450 joule protection. Both models have a limited lifetime warranty for the original purchaser. The original or a copy of the original receipt is required, so make a copy and put it with the manual. There is also a connected equipment replacement warranty (fair market value) if the unit doesn’t do its job properly and something gets damaged in your rig. At the end of the day it only makes good sense to have some level of surge protection on your RV, but, as you’ve Clearly explained, surges aren’t the only issues you may encounter so having some level of electrical management or protection makes a LOT more sense. Spending $150-$300+ dollars on some type of electrical protection is a very small price to pay for a rig that may cost from $30K up to $500K or more.
Your video came at a terrific time. We are about to head out for five months going Texas way, and I was just about to do the research on surge protectors. Now I know the differenced between surge protectors and EMS systems, and will look into the Surge Guard. I am a relatively new follower and bought the Rand McNally GPS because of your videos. Thanks for entering me into the contest. #giveaway
#giveaway I am a firm believer in NOT reinventing the wheel you guys are saving me a lot of time and money testing/reviewing new RV products and giving a fair product review/recommendations. In doing so you are providing your followers a huge service and saving them time, expense and potential damage to their RV's Thanks again for the videos take care, Milo.
Great video...love following you guys. So much great info. Lots of beeping on this one....nice to see others get stuck from time to time. I get beeped a lot when installing stuff.
Surge protector giveaway. Thanks so much for the info. You're saving a lot of people some very expensive electrical repairs/replacements. Y'all are awesome. Keep em' coming, and love the outtakes.......
#Giveaway....Thanks guys for the great info. I'm the lady in southern Oregon who at a young 72 will be full timing next year. Can't wait. You two are an inspiration to me. Thanks for all of the wonderful information.
Thanks for the info and laughs. I recently purchased a Hughes brand that plugs into the camp electrical column. Otherwise I might of picked your recommendation. At any rate they are worth the investment. 😊
Great topic on this video! On our last trip about a month ago our portable surge protector went bad. It was the molded in terminal the rv cable plugged into became a loose connection and was arching inside. So now we need another one before next season. I went out to look at the new ones and saw the ems units and I was debating on which one to get. Your video just helped me make up my mind, its going to be one with ems in it. The extra cost of that unit will be well worth, instead of having to replae a fridge or a/c unit.
The 34951 by Southwire Surge Guard, is that the one you recommend for the total protection of an RV? Saw several different units and just wanted to make sure I got the correct one! Thanks so much for all your help and great videos! Best channel ever for all things RV!!! We discovered your channel about a month ago, that’s why we are just now on your surge protection video, eventually we will get to your latest video and we will. Thanks again… Arnold and Maleia
The unit in this video is still a very good system. More recently, we are using hughes gear: ruclips.net/video/uOyVSZ9XWII/видео.html Honestly, either one works. The key is to get a unit that shuts off power when voltage is low to protect your RV, as well as the surge protection.
#giveaway This would be great to have. Me and my wife are upgrading to a new used fifth wheel with 50 amp service. Chad, love your install videos. I like your attention to detail and how everything is placed evenly and level etc. Nothing is ever perfect but I like it as close as possible. I served in the Air Force in weapons release doing the electrical and mechanical side of it. Started out on F-15 Eagles to F-117 to A-10 warthogs. Loved my time in the military and would do it all over again. Thank you for your service and hope sometime for a meet up. Keep up the great videos.
I have been watching your channel for over a year now. I ordered a 397TH because of the wealth of information you have provided to me and the community. You guys rock! #giveaway
A great #giveaway to RVers who should protect their home on the road. I always recommend some type of protection as I speak from experience. Great channel.
Thanks for sticking up for us less knowledgeable folks, Tara! ❤😚 Did I win? 😱 Jk'n 😉 I have a 30A TT right now - hopefully the person that wins really needs it! Good luck y'all! 🙏👊🍻
I have a 22' Jayco hybrid that uses 30 amp system not a huge fifth wheel with many more systems like you have. Do I still need the system that is more than just the surge protector? GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED! Thanks to all who entered. We will announce the winner in a few days on our community tab. 👍🏼
Chad and Tara are the best. Learn a lot and appreciate all you do.
At least your having fun, happy, blessed, and helping others. God bless you awesome humans
Great explanation of electrical terms. It helps people that don’t understand electricity.
Thank again,
#giveaway Love the way Chad explains some of this stuff! The 50 amp ems would get used when we go fulltime soon!
After 4 days without power due to the wildfires in N. CA. (Smith River Complex) it was interesting that when power returned... it was pushing 133 volts for about 18 hours. The plug in looks much easier-no military electrical experience #giveaway
Another great video Navy, thanks. My wife loves Daisy. Glad you are doing well Tara.
Chad makes a great kilroy! 🤣
Great information. We love your humor while discussing rv concerns. #giveaway
Hi
We didn't win the giveaway, so we purchased the surge guard and locking cable and got them today. Placed the order one morning and it shipped the same day. Great service from TechnoRV. Thanks for recommending them!
I believe in safety first. The more you can to keep your RV safe, the better you will be. But you can't let your guard down either.
As an Electrical Engineer, and RVer, I enjoyed this video. *Thumbs up*

Great video. In the process of buying a diesel pusher and had no idea this type of device was required. Thanks.
Great video, excellent explanation of the basic RV electrical system.
Excellent video. We are totally new to this RV world, and really appreciate the quality unbiased education.
Enjoyed your video. Adding one to my 'need' list. Good pointing out that not everyone is comfortable working on mains voltage that can vaporize you in a instant.

Terry & Melissa from Lake Wales, Florida , we enjoy your video”s which are very informative.
#giveaway! These are a must when gate guarding! Being hooked up to a generator all the time can be hard on an RV.
# Giveaway.
Great explanation of the product. Very important you use one to avoid expensive repairs! Thank you!
Thanks for the review on surge protection
Thanks Guys great job safe travels enjoy all your videos # give away 👍🙏🏼🙏🏼🐶🍀
Thanks for sticking up for us less knowledgeable folks, Tara! ❤😚
Did I win? 😱 Jk'n 😉 I have a 30A TT right now - hopefully the person that wins really needs it! Good luck y'all! 🙏👊🍻
Love your videos you guys are a trip.
I have a 22' Jayco hybrid that uses 30 amp system not a huge fifth wheel with many more systems like you have. Do I still need the system that is more than just the surge protector? Probably a stupid question but I am totally ignorant when it comes to electrical issues. I stated watching RV you tube channels after going from a pop-up to our hybrid in 2018 and am always trying to differentiate from what applies to us and what is only for full-timers in bigger, more involved rigs.Have been a subscriber for over a year now. #giveaway will pick our new rv Wednesday... Happy to join the Club.
Ok we missed it. That's ok still love watching you guys and hope to meet you all soon.
Good overall presentation on the RV electrical and how the park's system effects our rigs. #giveaway
Awesome information! Happy days on changing lanes! #giveaway
