I had lost my mom in the CICU when I was 14, and though the outcome was averted as much as possible, it was also expected. I'm 23 now, and seeing her in the CICU still haunts me to this day. One thing I can say for certain, all healthcare professionals involved cared very much and gave it one hell of an effort. Looking back, I think some of the staff took the outcome as hard as I did. Overall, came out learning there are no guarantees in life, so appriciate every breath we take!
I lost my dad in the ICU 10 months ago, I still dream till this day of how ill and helpless he laid there, with all the tubes and wires.. I probably will never get rid of that image but I hope I will learn to live with it one day. The ICU is a good place if you survive, nonetheless its very very traumatizing for family and friends to see a loved one there. Also it's very hard to acknowledge the fact that whenever its time to turn the machines off, that your loved one is never gonna wake up again
Listen. NOTHING matters except for being adequately STAFFED. Screw everything else. If your nurse is overwhelmed, shit is going to happen and there is NOTHING you can do about it. Hospital will ALWAYS reduce their staffing numbers throughout the day just to save $200 if they send a nurse home 4 hours early. It's STAFFING. It's not the machines, the doctors, the "nurses" but STAFFING. You need people. And part of that is people sitting around doing NOTHING when there is nothing to do. Adequate
