It’s genius to begin a film like “Gremlins” with a song this warm and nostalgic. It promises a great movie and puts you right in the heart of the holiday.
It's the punch of heartache during a time of joy. The song is both beautiful and Christmas-y but the raw emotion of Darlene Love's vocals is so powerful. Right up there with Fairytale of New York as a guaranteed way to get me to cry at Christmas.
@@jensanruby6739it’s tough, in the 60s enough people would say this counts as “rock ‘n’ roll”. We are 60+ years removed from the earliest inception of Rock. ronnie constantino-It is a great Christmas song, but for me it doesn't feel like Christmas till I've heard Fairytale Of New York, or Nat King Coles The Christmas Song.
For Cher fans-You can really hear her "60s" singing voice singing the background vocals when she and others come in on the first "Christmas...., Christmas..." Cher, you were just too cool for school, even back then!
@@danielrice7234 Daniel, so very sorry for ur loss.. know it leaves a void that nothing can fill.. but tk God you'll see her again.. and until then hold on to and cherish all the wonderful and loving times that you had 2gether.. tk God for memories, they help us to carry on without those we've lost n love..
Phil Spector may be insane and a murderer, but this song is a production masterpiece. Every single time I hear it, I can't believe the power of this song. Of course, it wouldn't be anything without Darlene Love's amazing vocals.
And if you pay attention to the Outro of the song, listening to the piano, the backing vocals, and the band etc., you’ll hear about a third of Springsteen’s early material.
I remember this song on both my favorite Christmas movies: Christmas With The Kranks and Gremlins (1985) and so much more too, and this is my favorite Christmas song ever too so much.
Not sure if this has already been mentioned, I scrolled down and didn't find any comment but Leon Russell played piano on this and improvised that piano ending. Phil Spector was so amazed he wrote a check for $100 right on the spot. He was not known for his generosity. Leon was a very popular session man back then.
One of my favorite Christmas songs; her vocals are phenomenal! She put so much emotion into that it's impossible to not sing along like I'm living it. Haha ♡
I grew up with these babies awesome songs they always made me happy. I think of Christmas my boyfriend back than. My parents were alive, and Ashley st in Westspfld ma where I grew up. Oh soooo simple soooo nice so Christmas. That was then I’m now 73 yrs old and times were different. And yes Phil Spector was a genius. Sad how he ended up.
I absolutely love this song, when I pass away and if it’s winter time I would like this song playing at my memorial. I don’t want tears just my life celebrated in a joyful way. 😊
I grew up listening to this Christmas Album it was a tradition. Every year my dad would play it right after Thanksgiving. But it was on when we decorated and Christmas Eve and Christmas day. My dad's favorite and mine bc I was a total daddy's girl was Baby it's Christmas Darlene love! I'll never forget when everything switched over to CD and I had to order it as a gift for him. He was only 55 when I found him, he had a massive heart attack when I went up to visit with my mom. I still can't listen to it without crying. Phil Spector may be crazy but he was a musical genius!
Christmas is the most painful and saddening time of the year for me as it is a bitter reminder that I will die and never have what I most long for and desire. It's a few songs that really stab me in the very heart to remind me of this and this song is one of them. 😢😢😢
Not only the greatest modern Christmas song, but one of the best rock songs ever recorded. The climax is shattering. It's never been topped. Turn it up and prepare to be blown away!
So I recently just heard the news on television that Cher was the background singer in this original song track. If you listen really carefully you can hear Cher’s voice. Cher was 17 years old.
Wow. Day after Christmas. Kept it together through this season til I heard her repeating "please, please, please" at the end of this song. That's a killer.
It's April now and I've played this seven times in a row, after watching Darlene do several Letterman performances from the years, last night and the night before. I've been playing it fifty years at any time of year. And that outro still raises the hairs on the back of my neck.
It's an understatement, to say that I'm not much on Christmas... but this song simply blows me away. It has all other Christmas music beat by light years.
But Jimmy and I could never be made, because we had Irish blood. It didn’t even matter that my mother was Sicilian. To become a member of a crew, you’ve got to be one hundred percent Italian so they can trace all your relatives back to the old county.
Ronnie spector. he was "married" to her. he put her through utter hell and then thier son. when the marriage was over Phil spector exerted enormous control over his son to get his ex wife Ronnie spector to get back together with him. when she heard what Phil spector she initiated legal proceedings to have not only have her marriage annulled legally but also remove his right to her property, access to her son, and a whole bunch of other things.

It's not Christmas without Darlene Love 💖🎄🎁☃️❄
Christmas Kranks I hear you last night
Oh thank you dad

Nor Brenda Lee.
After 60 years, still one of the greatest Christmas songs ever made! Timeless classic!❤
It’s genius to begin a film like “Gremlins” with a song this warm and nostalgic. It promises a great movie and puts you right in the heart of the holiday.
Yup gremlins in its 85 reissue was one of the first movies I saw in theaters at age 3 and it introduced me to this song
Saw Grems at theater way back and the song just kicked it off..
Amen!
Don't get me wrong. I like Gremlins, but The Polar Express is Warner Bros.' Magnum Opus of Christmas movies.
i looked for this song because of gremlins
I don’t know why this song makes me emotional. But it’s a wonderful beautiful song. Gotta love it.❤❤
It's the punch of heartache during a time of joy. The song is both beautiful and Christmas-y but the raw emotion of Darlene Love's vocals is so powerful. Right up there with Fairytale of New York as a guaranteed way to get me to cry at Christmas.
That wall of sound was no joke
The greatest rock 'n roll Christmas recording ever. Darlene Love, your voice is sublime!
Its Soul music, not really rock n roll. Although I do agree its possibly the best Christmas song.
@@jensanruby6739 - it's both. And uniquely Phil Spector's "wall of sound."
Heres a little reminder of the song

*A message to the future generations:*
_Don't let this song die._
Got it
Don’t let the flame die out!
OFC!
Rage, rage against the dying of the light!
It won’t lmao
The snow's coming down
I'm watching it fall
Lots of people around
Baby please come home
The church bells in town
All singing in sound
Full of happy sounds
Baby please come home
They're singing "Deck The Halls"
But it's not like Christmas at all
'Cause I remember when you were here
And all the fun we had last year
Pretty lights on the tree
I'm watching them shine
You should be here with me
Baby please come home
They're singing "Deck The Halls"
But it's not like Christmas at all
'Cause I remember when you were here
And all the fun we had last year
If there was a way
I'd hold back this tear
But it's Christmas day
Please
Please
Please
Please
Baby please come home
Thanks
The way she builds up to that powerful ending❤

This song was featured in the 1st Gremlins movie.

The opening titles to Gremlins,, " Rockin ricky " ,,, SO GOOOOOOOD.
It scares me to death.. its just so powerful, emotive, soulful, just leaves you paralysed with your mouth wide open till its finished.... Amen!!

Sure miss seeing Darlene singing this on David Letterman every year.
Not the same but she has been singing this on The View talk show the past few years
She was the only reason I watched Letterman the last 10 years or so that he was on.
Me too! I ended up going to the Howard Theater and watch her sing it after Letterman went off the air.
She sings it on the View
Masterpiece!
Best. Christmas. Song. Ever.
+coollda Eh, I like Kelly Clarkson's "Underneath The Tree" a bit more. But this IS good!
