My daddy used to sing this to me when I was little. He couldn't carry a tune but he didnt care. This song came to me this morning and I told daddy that I love him too. He died at the age of 50 in 1982. Now I am an old woman and still miss my daddy.. He was from the coalmines of southwestern Virginia. All of the greats would come through the coal mining towns so he saw most of them. The Carter sisters, Hank Williams Ralph Stanly lived in Clintwood Virginia, Flat and Scruggs and many more.
My grandfather used to sing this while driving his old Chevy van when I was a kid. It’s amazing the memories a song can bring back. He has since passed on, but I look forward to the day that we meet again! God is good!
My grandparents would sing this to me and my siblings when we were little, my grandpa occasionally still sings it when he's feeling good and in a good mood, my grandpa is 70yrs old and my grandma is 68 or 69yrs old, i love them both dearly, im 25yrs old currently.
I looked up this song because of the South Park rendition and I was trying to figure out what the original song was. It makes me happy to see so many other people here thanks to South Park as well
Grandpa used to sing this to me, his twinkling shiny bright blue eyes smiling. Simple joys are wrapped in traditional music. Singing a silly ditty can make a lifetime of memories.
"You get a line and I'll get a pole, matey. You get a line and I'll get a pole, friend. You get a line and I'll get a pole, we'll go fishing in a crocodile hole, buddy pal o' mine."

I am so, so, happy! My first grade teacher used to play this song for us (way back in 1974!). I have looked high and low and everywhere for the exact version - finally - THIS IS IT! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am now a music teacher, and I'll be playing it for my 2nd graders this year. =)
I’m here because my grandpa used to sing this to me as a little girl.. I always thought it was just a tune he had come up with and i’m just now discovering where he got it from.
Pig in a Pen is another similarly light hearted tune, and Don Reno’s version of Grandpa’s Clock too all great for. I love to pick that one and kids go nuts when the we get to the TICK TOCK TICK TOCK. They jump around like little maniacs then you can see their little faces timing the Tick Tocks and laughing lol In fact for what was a Child’s song I just love Ron Reno’s version of Grandpa’s Clock. It’s a rollicking good bluegrass tune with a sweet little tale to it; especially with a bass player that can do the Slap bass breakdown well !
I learned this song from my pawpaw as well and used to play it with him. Still love to play it on guitar. Cheers me up… they just don’t write them like this anymore!
So, this song was sung by my Drill Sergeants as cadence for my MP training at Fort McClellan, AL. Anyone else have this awesome tune forever imprinted into their minds? I still find myself singing this when I need to stay focused.
I'm here because of the Petersens, they did such a good version it made me look for the original an older versions like these. If you like this song, be sure to check out the Petersons
Still here 2024 🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵

I loved those days that tenor shared the same microphone. Classic
It was all mono, so one mic was sufficient, No worry about mismatched mics, channel assignments. Just turn it on an roll the tape.
My grandma use to sing me this song ♥️♥️♥️
Same! My old Cajun grandma used to sing (I use "sing" loosely since she couldn't carry a tune) this song often.
