From the first sound out of this great diva's mouth, I'm startled as if for the first time hearing her, by the size and beauty of her voice. This last time I heard her, in the House, a late-career Puritani, my reaction was the same but more so-....her voice, heard immediately on her entrance, simply flooded the entire theater...
I just had the same suprise. The recording just started on my computer by chance. I was not looking, I was busy doing something else. And upon hearing that voice I stopped, saying to myself that voice is pure perfection and I went and looked and it was Joan Sutherland to whom I had not listened for years and I thought waouh! she is really unique. And remains unique in spite of so many fantastic singers one can hear today. Years and years ago, I was 18 years old, I used to listen almost exclusively to Maria Callas. In my opinion, no one could rival with her. With one exception! And that was Joan Sutherland. 55 years later I still feel the same... The same emotion...
@TheWiseMonkey8888Joan Sutherland is a flawless dramatic Coloratura. . Whenever I get down, and I was in urgent care For three days; I put on my Joan sutherland and she takes me to heaven. I'm an Opera 😂 singer myself
This is my first time seeing Ms. Sutherland singing that BEAUTIFUL INTERPRETATION. I sure enjoyed it very very much. Every Diva uses her own way..and that makes it FANTASTICO/AMAZING/OWESOME/ ETC. Thanks so much for allowing me to listen and enjoy every beatiful interpretation.
I would like to jump into the fray. All above so true but what an absolute joy to hear her singing this most gorgeous of arias. Leontyne with Karajan on disc probably one of the most thrilling, Kiri at her best sublime, Leonie Rysanek on her stomach heavenly, Lubja Welitsch out of this world and all the rest. Try the movie I live for art. Vissi D'arte with all the greatest including Tebaldi, Callas, Albanese, Olivero and more, truly transporting. A must for all lovers of the aria. Cheers
Thanks for bringing these other Tosca’s up!! My favorite is Price! I forgot about Welitsch, of course Kiri (my cat’s namesake), I was introduced to opera with Callas doing Tosca (very dramatic, but I’ve always had trouble with her tone, couldn’t fault her interpretations though)! I’ll probably get backlash - Sutherland, Price, Te Kanawa, and Fleming are the most vocally beautiful in my estimation!
It's ridiculous to even compare these magnificent sopranos! They were all equally great, and each one was unique, magnificent, and one of a kind. As with any artist, they had their strengths, they had their weaknesses. But they all made a huge mark in the world of opera. Brava Sutherland, Callas, Price, Caballe, Sills, and whoever else. Thank you all for your greatness and for enriching our lives with your art and beauty!
Those good old days of the GOLDEN AGE of OPERA...that which will be a long long long time to ever know as then. My, how fortunate to have been enriched in our lives of a wealth money can not match.
Tosca, Suor Angelica, L'Oracolo: Dame Joan was very good at singing verismo which she approached with bel canto phrasing that worked so beautifully. Brava.
It is not possible ...even somoene who resembled( and that was almost unattainable in nature if you ask me) her and had a similar facial bone structure did not have the hand of GOD on voice like this humble gift of GOD did. He fellow stars said SHE WAS GOD GIVEN TO US
I think this is a beautiful performance of this aria. It might lack some of the drama that other singers have given it (Callas), but like Callas, Caballe, and Ponselle it is being sung by someone who can sing the bel canto repertoire.
This is a gorgeous rendition of the most beautiful soprano aria ever written.Dame Joan's soaring voice supports the role of Tosca without the need to overplay the passion. Her heavenly vocal instrument gives this aria a unique and very moving quality. Divine !
Tosca é pura paixão. Ciumenta, intensa, instintiva.
Interesting to hear JS sing Tosca - not her usual repertoire by any means! I think she does it rather well. But it is her stunning bel canto singing which sticks in the memory -was lucky enough to see her as Lucia at CG in the early 80s: she was just sensational. Her voice filled the house like no other I’ve heard.
It was fantastic. I saw her inn person six times. But not in Lucia, unfortunately. Traviata, Norma, Giovanni, Puritani and two recitals. All were fantastic.
With Callas in this aria you get goosebumps and tears in your eyes, as she reveals the pathos of her entrapment; with Sutherland we hear deliciously floating notes devoid of the unfolding drama. Sutherland herself has said, during her talk at Wollongong University, that you go to the Opera to listen to a voice and that if you need dramatic performance one ought to go to the theatre! How wrong is that! Opera is vocal acting, and that is why Callas is not Callas, she was not projecting “Callas” but became the embodiment of Tosca, Violeta, Lucia, Norma, Anna Bolena, Rosina etc. Having said this, when Sutherland’s singing was not cutting out all the consonants, and when one does not seek a profound characterisation, Sutherland did have an angelic voice, so suitable for church masses…
Say what you will about her diction and acting. Joan's voice was beautiful. I double dare anyone, especially from the Callas cult, to find a more perfect "Perche signor" than this one. That has to be one of the most beautiful B flats ever recorded.
Very beautiful rendition. Sutherland didn't get much involved in Puccini, singing only a Turandot on record, and a few Suor Angelicas in Australia. She wisely turned her attention to bel canto, but this clip shows that she could sing a beautiful Puccini line as well.
I saw that Suor Angelica at the Sydney Opera House. At the final curtain the audience reaction was extraordinary. In 50 years of opera going I have never experienced anything like it. The cheers, bravos foot stamping could be heard all over Sydney. Let there be no doubt Joan could sing Puccini.
