The Numbers Gang is hard core. They even have a secret language and a military style hierarchy based on old Boer Commando ranks. Being a member of the 27s must be the worst though. The 27s mediate between the 26s and 28s. This usually means carrying out executions when there a blood feud between the 26s and 28s. They're also the ones who typically stab guards... this is usually resorted to when the Numbers "tribunal" rules that some conflict should be settled by spilling a guards' life. Hardcore!
Fortunately, this gang that is over a 100 years old is slowly starting to fade as inmates realise that joining the gang leads to committing crimes in prison... which just increases your sentence. They are fading much slower in and around Cape Town. That's because inmates with pre-existing ties to non-prison gangs are required to switch to the Numbers Gang while incarcerated - preventing gangland feuds from spilling into the prison.
Only refusal to join the gang it be religious reasons but then u have to perform or practise your religion to show u have no interest in joining then u are left alone but if not till thus day you have to join a number gang it hasn't changed the M.O. changed but they still operating the same for the last 200 years
