Fantastic video and extremely informative, just gotta get the funds togeather for the right gear. Thankyou for the amazing video!

Thanks, Wood and Shop! This is my first attempt at wood carving and having watched this video I am looking forward to my first test run! Great info and beautifully conveyed!
I have a normal sized rubber mallet. It's really light and helps me a lot because of it's effect from the rubber. It gives me a chance to hammer with more subtlety on the chisels and gives me more control.
I recently started carving, I love it, I challenge myself drawing patterns that I know that I have to figure out on my own how to do. I love this craft, I got sick of "painting" using the same material over and over again. But this is really fun! Only problem is, I find it hard to stop, I can go for maybey 5-hours, haha..
Glad you liked it! Have you seen the accompanying blog post? It shows where to find all the carving gouges: woodandshop.com/wood-carving-tools-techniques
I have saved the link, into my "morning coffe" folder, things I read at morning with my coffe. What I really like is how you can feel the difference between types of woods. I cut my own pieces and we have alot of variety of wood/plants. What I have noticed is that the decorative carvings on an old sawhandle I found, it's not that complicated, it's something I could do now. My main goal is working with wood as an art, but compared to working with pen and paper, I can use this in everyday life. Hardest thng is remebering which way the grain is, haha!
Ha! The honest answer is I have absolutely no idea what i'm doing! Or rather, I'm learning on my own with old tools that are maybe 80+ year old. So I just try to work around my limitations, and the supply of tools in my town sucks, so I only got straight steels to work with which makes making any curved shape a pain, but I prefer to improvise with whatever I got. The one thing I have to learn is the sticky stuff, like varnish ? My English seems to have given up on me here, but I hope you'll be able to decipher my text, haha.

Thank you so much sir. My new found passion is a diversion from drawing and painting. I love this. After buying all the tools and wood I found your video to be very helpful in getting started. thank you
I have a couple of questions. Firstly, what type of wood is the best/easiest to carve? Can you carve a branch you cut off of a tree or does it have to be manufactured wood? If you could take the time to answer my questions I would greatly appreciate it.
+mackenzie breaux Use lime, poplar, or willow. Some species of maple are quite easily carveable. Cherry is good too, but the wood is harder. Generally, you should look for wood without growth rings in it and without knots - the more homogenous the wood is, the less likely it will tear. Don't carve branches with chisels - you will definitely cut yourself - use a chip carving knife, or a penknife. Whatever you use, make sure they are very sharp (sharpen it at least to 1000 grit - sandpaper is the cheapest solution, then some polishing compound, then strop it on a piece of leather), and always cut away from you. Use a bench to rest the branch on it, avoing holding the branch in your hands while carving. Always put the holding hand behind the blade, so in case of slippage, you won;t cut your fingers. Make sure the wood it''s dry (at least a year of drying time), or it will warp afterwards.
Starting with soft, inexpensive woods will make things easier for new starters. Easier because if using harder woods, it may put ppl off wood carving. As competence in use of tools have been achieved, choosing woods of preference will be more enjoyable.
My son, 12 years old, has been asked to do a relief carving for a competition in April of 2015. We enjoyed watching your video. Thank you very much for a great introduction to the different beginner's carving tools out there.
