Living overseas opens your eyes; once open, they can never be closed. The US government has been acting like an abusive parent for a long time. When I lived in a Middle Eastern country, I felt freer than living in the US.

As an American who's well traveled and who has lived abroad forty-six of my sixty-eight years I can say your'e correct.
I go back to the States every now and again and still love many aspects of it but I'll be damned if I consider it a "free" country, or the freest place on earth, as my countrymen are wont to boast.
Americans are drowning in rules, laws and regulations and must pay for daily abuse. They have no idea.
You can't even go for a quiet walk without being assaulted with various and ubiquitous signs saying no sitting, no loitering, no this, no that etc.
You can get ticketed or even arrested in most places at the drop of a hat.
For me freedom isn't just words in a noble document. It's something you sense and it can't be put into words. It's everyday life where you respect others and mind your own decent business while they do the same.
I once saw a bumper sticker in California back in the '80's that summed it up perfectly. It said;
"I may not know what freedom is but I sure as Hell know what it ain't."

I dropped my US citizenship a decade ago. It is not the land of the free and opportunities.
I don't regret one single bit seeing where it is heading. I have 5 different passports and live an awesome life.

this is all about preventing you from moving capital out of the US. The US government and several of the state governments are so desperate to spend YOUR income, they simply feel they can not allow you to actually leave. Most Americans are no longer citizens, but subjects.
As long as you are an American citizen, not having renounced your citizenship, you are literally owned by the government anywhere you go in the world. It gives the term Prison Planet the meaning.

As an American, I can confirm. It was a shock to find out that America is the ONLY country that CONTINUES to TAX its citizens, even after they've moved abroad! It's also shocking that the process for renouncing is so expensive, and long. Feels malicious. And makes me feel much less 'patriotic'.
Its the only country in the world which doesn't have mandatory paid annual leave maternity leave sick leave etc and the inflated costs of healthcare (medication and medical procedures) is just criminal how are they getting away with charging 10 times the cost of stuff its mind boggling

Dude, less than 30% of the more than 250 sovereign states have any legislation regarding leave allowances. Most don't even have national regulations regarding work hours.

Yes, "if you live in Switzerland, you have to be creative." I live here and have Irish citizenship. Renouncing US citizenship via Bern would have taken 18 months. I inquired at several embassies by email and found the one in Zagreb, Croatia to be friendly and fast. First interview by phone, Second interview on site in 2 weeks, and certificate received 10 days later! Woohoo!!

@@edsmith9900 Did you know you can do a wire transfer into a foreign national bank? And that not all banks worldwide are willing to give the IRS access to said accounts? Hiding money is the easiest thing in the world. US corporations do it all the time. Apple has over half a billion dollars offshore they've never paid taxes on. Just because you're unaware, or more likely, don't have enough money to make it worth while, doesn't mean the options don't exist.

I have news for you ,almost all country's say the passport is property of the state. They can give or revoke it as they see fit. At the end of the day they rule by force. Try not to pay property tax and see what happens. Freedom is an elusion.

I'm a Brit living in Bucharest for some time now. A few years ago my bank here, ING, called me into the branch and said the head office needs me to fill in a form as an expat about all my investments. After reading the doc I noticed ther was no mention of European Union, just IRS. I denied filling any info telling them this is for US citizens not EU citizens. They said its for all expats so I asked to see the form in another European language which they couldnt. I wonder how many people fell for this trick.?

The US control of banks all round the world is part of its hegemony. Banks outside the US are obliged to tell the US if any person living in the US has an account there. They do this by asking the client for all kinds of details.

If it was about avoiding taxes, people wouldn't move to Sweden or Finland where taxes are even higher. It's not about the quantity of taxes, but the quality. If the U.S government would do something with the money besides sending it down the crapper, we wouldn't mind the outrageous taxes.
The people in the USA pay 30-40% of each paycheck in taxes. Meanwhile they receive almost zero in benefits for it. All while struggling to survive in a dystopian hellscape.
There seems to be zero accountability - they get voted in and then do nothing which benefits their citizens - it's mind-blowing how they get away with it - why aren't they all banging on their politicians doors and demanding something back in terms of service and help
Despite seemingly paying higher taxes in places like Sweden and Finland they also have higher wages and get a lot back in return to the point where it is worth it. We get nothing here.

If you don't live, work, nor have assets in the USA how can they justify taxing you overseas? This goes completely against what the USA was founded on.
The insult to injury is when you go to another country that is significantly less affluent than your own and they care more about their people than foreigners. Especially the ones who work and pay taxes. The US government cares more about foreigners and people who don’t work or pay taxes. Which is a lot higher than you would think. Time to start looking for the door.

So true, I've been looking at permanent residence in Mexico. The income requirements are quite high. However the US basically lets anyone come here. Not sure how long it will take, but this will destroy America.

It should be noted that in the 1930s the Nazi regime in Germany freely allowed German citizens to renounce their German citizenship. All that was required was for a form to be filled in and then that form to be presented in person at a German consulate.
There was not any requirement for interviews etc.

What was it? I'm in a similar situation
My wife found out the hard way that despite being a dual citizen like myself, without a valid US passport, she couldn’t leave the US when a family emergency came up. She believed she could just leave the country on her Nigerian passport. It got sorted, but it was a pain to fast track her US passport renewal. It was a great reminder that even if you don’t renounce your US citizenship at least keep your passport valid so you can leave if desired. “Two is one, and one is none.”
Who and what will sanction to America for her war crimes?
Here are some suggestions :
1) All aligarchs should withdraw money and investment from western allies. They are save in their countries.
2) All businesses of the world should seek alternative money transfer systems as CIPS of China or other reliable systems against SWIFT.
3) NO FUEL TRANSACTIONS BY DOLLARS.
4) All WTO members countries will reserves all countries currencies for their mutual transactions. Don't allow one money for transactions. It will encourage hegemony.
And more
5) Against Western allies alliance, make other alliances.
6) Against NATO make WOTO( World oceanic Treaty Alliance) Leader will be Latin America, Africa, Middle East, Asia except Japan and South Korea as they are not free countries , Russia. Australia, New Zealand, Canada may be considered under some conditions.
@@MrBadjohn69 I live in Africa and despite it's problems, it is actually ahead of the USA in several respects. My favorite being my internet. I have optical fiber here that runs around 20 Mb/sec. When I lived in Hawaii, the best available DSL was around 100 kb/sec. The Chinese have really upgraded the local infrastructure in that last few years. High speed rail and much better freeways between Nairobi and Mombasa. Electronics are more advanced too. The mPesa network allows you to quickly send money to a relative or friend using your phone. You can buy a brand new UNLOCKED phone for under a hundred dollars.

Well, the US allows anyone to have multiple citizenships but they do require you enter and leave the US using your American passport. Not too much to ask, in reality.

I have to renew my green card and paid the $540 in July of last year. I was sent a piece of paper saying that my green card (which ran out in June last year) would be extended one year. I have still not got an appointment to renew my green card. I think the workings of the US govt are in a shambles to be honest.
I have been waiting for my card since October 2020, I did get the extension too.

Writing from Canada, I completely relate to "I don't recognize my country; I don't believe they'll keep me safe; I don't believe they care about me". Also, I contacted the British embassy in Ottawa, in an attempt to determine whether I qualify for British citizenship (my father is British). Firstly, there is no option to speak to anyone unless 'you have an emergency with your British passport', and they don't allow 'walk ins'. Appointment only. So how can you get an appointment if there is nobody to speak to about an appointment????? It's straight out of a Dickens... the 'circumlocution office' where you go round and round and they go out of their way to be unhelpful. no doubt paid by taxpayers.

Contact the Foreign Office in London and , if you can travel out of Canada go to london and speak to an immigration lawyer .
Your experience with the British embassy should give you a clue as to how much the British govt cares about anyone. I assure you that it is the same with ALL govts. The govt officials see regular people as mere peasants to be used and abused. So I chuckle when I see peasants have high hopes from their nanny govts, that they'll "keep me safe" and will "care about me".
I'm an American. Here too most people expect the govt to be their nannies who're supposed to take care of them. I used to think that Republicans were different, but when Donald Trump became president, Republican -voters- peasants were looking to him to be his nanny/daddy and wanted him to take care of them and fix all their problems. Lol, didn't happen. Now that there is no one strong enough to be their daddy, they're lost and don't know what to do.
Except America wasn't supposed to be like this. People were supposed to take care of themselves, not rely on the govt or corporations. This is why the people's God-given right to bear arms was protected along with many other God-given rights. The govt's tasks were minimal. The Federal govt here was fairly small even 100 years ago. The state govts too. I think that Teddy Roosevelt was the first guy who pushed for nanny policies, and the peasants fell for him. Today, the govt system is so large that nothing escapes them. Reliance on insurance companies absolved people of more responsibilities and made them further weak. So is it any wonder that people have lost their holiness and are treated like low-class peasants by the govt, the mega-corporations, and even by fellow citizens!?
To any Americans reading this- The solution isn't to flee the country. The solution is to destroy the big govt and big corporations, and become responsible yourselves. It is easy to destroy them- just stop relying on them and stop funding them. Becoming responsible yourselves is much harder and I can't give details here. But fleeing would work only temporarily. The 'leaders' in your new country will figure out quick that you see them as nannies, and then they too will start treating you like peasants to be used and abused.

I don't recognize USA and want to leave and renounce. I have Irish and Italian citizen by decent but also don't want to abandon my aging mom. When she leaves this world I am leaving USA for good.
I got my Ecuadorian citizenship in 2019, just before the pandemic. It took about 1year, 2 months, and cost me roughly $3K, but it was worth it. I hit some minor hurdles and roadblocks here in Ecuador, but kept grinding forward until I got the citizenship. Worth its weight in gold.
Must feel nice. Especially knowing that Ecuador would never extradite an Ecuadorian citizen to the US if it ever became interested in you for whatever reason.
@@huwhitecavebeast1972 - just had to take a citizenship test, and show 2 clean criminal reports: one from your last state of residence, and one from the FBI. Simple. Look at what's going on now- this Ukraine thing may have certain countries shut their borders to any travelers.
My experience is for the most part exactly what you have pointed out. I would add that every US consulate has different forms. For example, Austria treats Citizens like prisoners asking for parole. They suggest more than once that you have a lawyer look over your documents before filing. One question that I found especially disturbing was whether you voted in a us election. If yes, explain.
My second attempt to renounce was in Amsterdam. That was even better than Frankfurt where I am officially assigned. They filled out the Forms for you based on the information filled out on their questionnaire. They even confirm receipt of documents immediately. My problem was I do not live there and they rejected my request to my dismay.
Not all consulates are the same even though the US flag is flying.
This is a shameful nation with regard to how they treat expat’s. My patriotic heart was bleeding and now I only want the get out of jail free card of German citizenship.
I am a US national by birth who became a naturalized Japanese national. I thought about giving up my US nationality/passport, but no way will I pay the fee to renounce/relinquish! The Japanese passport is the perfect travel document/banking ID, so no complaints.

You still technically have US federal tax obligation on any income you earn. Be careful.
But japan doesn't allow dual citizenship?
You should probably see if you can keep your dual citizenship. If I remember correctly Japan makes people renounce their dual citizenship once they're 22 years old.
@@kankenoh My advice is to read the Nationality Act of Japan (国籍法) for yourself and not rely on fearmongering websites on the Internet. There is no legal basis in Japanese law for any penalties, adverse dispositions, etc. for merely having Japanese nationality and another nationality.
I'm from Spain and I lived in the USA for 15 years, now I'm going back to Spain. If I work in Spain with my Spanish citizenship, why do I have to pay taxes to the USA?

With denouncing US citizenship becoming more difficult, we need to start discussing strategies around Puerto Rico as well as using DAFs and other trust structures whether on shore or offshore to negate taxes as much as possible.

Denouncing is something else than renouncing.
That aside you can of course always announce. Its not like you need their permission. All you need to do is inform them. After all did you ever sign some contract saying you cant renounce? Or that you need their permission? I think not so you just inform them. Of course you should make sure you have assets elsewhere and have another citizenship already.

I am a huge gun enthusiast and I have been thinking of taking the leap to a new country. But truth be told I don't want to give up my collection of firearms and that's the main reason why I have been holding onto my citizenship of a country I no longer recognize as my own. This country is out of control and getting worse. Does anyone know or recommend countries or (areas in the Caribbean) that have gun friendly laws?
The Mexican constitution guarantees your right to own firearms for self defense in your home or sport or hunting rifles; however, the secondary law restrict to those that are not for the use of the military. You may own up to .38 but nothing bigger, rifles, but not auto or semi auto machine guns, only hunting rifles. As you say, sometimes the smaller offices are much more helpful. When I lived in France, the majority of the U.S. consular staff in Strasbourg were French. They behaved as typical disinterested functionaries. However once I worked my way past these gate keepers to talk to the Consul General himself, all went well. I was never able to get past “les rond-de-cuir,” the ones who won't lift a finger at the American Embassy in Paris.

In Europe people pay very high taxes but at least Europeans get more benefits from their government but the United States is high taxes and the citizens are being bully to submission and no help for anything whatsoever.
What does the average EU born citizen get for their ridiculously high taxes? Health insurance, that they could purchase or that their job should provide?
@@stephanied143 it is horrible to get insurance through an employer. If one gets fired or needs to quit due to harassment it is almost impossible to do. An employee has to put up with an abusive boss only because of health insurance. No way. No system is perfect but the United States is going from bad to worse. I advice people with green cards not to get citizenship it is not worth it.

Can they mark your file and make it hard or impossible for you to re-enter to visit family/friends as way to get back at you for renouncing? I believe I read it on the US gov. website that you may be barred from entering the US after you renounce your citizenship.
Australia was not allowing "their citizens" to enter or exit, period. The same with Canada and New Zealand. This caused people to lose their homes, businesses and families. Thin about it.

Honestly I love all the points you have drawn about this topic. I am a proud Black Woman. And I have been researching giving up my US citizenship. I am in the Caribbean. I am somewhere that I don't have to fear my life. In America, I didn't feel protected. I was in a very abusive relationship. The police were wonderful, though. I knew in my heart they had a conscience because until I left the apartment they checked on me every other day. But the courts are a joke. They allowed the idiot to live 2 blocks from me. And why was he granted bail? He had 2 times with me and 1 time with another woman. He family harassed me. My children that don't belong to him, he stalked them until I sent for them to come with me. With all of this I already made my mind up. Hell no, I will never step foot back in America. I have a computer. I can order things from there if needed. There is nothing I need there. I am no contact with mostly all my relatives. So yeah I have no ties there. I am not going to stay in a country where I have to fight to be an equal and I worry about my two Black sons. They are cute little boys right now. But at a point they will grow up to be men. I am tired of living like that especially when i have other options. Everybody is here for different reasons. It depends on the situation, as to the cost. If the person is simply a working person, one that works every day to live, let them go simply by completing a form, no interview. If they have built a business using this nation, the people and its resources, there should be a cost.

My concern about giving up your American citizenship is how do you protect your money. Where do you do your banking? Which countries should a person avoid if they have a large sum in the bank?
Over the last 2 years, I find myself in a situation where I stand corrected by Nomad Capitalist after years of dogging you guys.
This idea that you shouldn’t say anything bad about living in the US because you could be in this country or that country (citing really bad options) is absurd. Because you aren’t aiming for the worst, you want to make things better and can you do that in the US? Sure if you’re wealthy or have a plan that becomes successful. The thing is that’s not going to be all of us and it’s getting harder and harder to get by comfortably. Think about that, getting by comfortably in the richest nation on the planet is getting harder and harder.
So leaving for better options isn’t a bad idea, that’s how most of us ended up in the US to begin with. I personally would love to be in a country that values it’s people enough to provide comprehensive healthcare to all of their citizens. A place were they don’t have a larger prison population than even dictatorships do (all because of a for profit prison system and corrupt politicians). Yet, we lock up non víolent people and have a revolving door justice system for víolent crimínals.
We have media that isn’t held to journalistic integrity and propagate divisive rhetoric as “news”. We have a military industrial complex that is dangerous not only to the world but to all of us too (us meaning the citizens of the US too). The łeft in the US aren’t our survivors any more than the ríght is, if 2020 taught you anything it should be that.

Lisbon American Embassy just opened its renouncing services but it seems all the rest in Europe and Israel are still closed.
Im starting to look at renouncing my American citizenship seriously now.
They created a backlog so large that if they did process the requests it would look really bad. If the US goes from 2k renouncing each year to 30k it would look really bad. They'd likely make it impossible to renounce in the future to avoid it entirely.

My experience in Ecuador, I needed a US government form notorized. Ecuador doesnt notorize documents in English. I was glad to hear the US embassy offered it as a service. They provide this service one day a month and it costs $50.
Its funny, the US embassy here in Ecuador is like a fortress with fences, wire, barriers blockades etc. You are confronted by at least four guards before you even get inside while the Swiss embassy is just another building on the street.
I am on green card and eligible to apply for citizenship having completed my 5 years stay. My concern is is it worth applying for citizenship if it’s going to be hard or near impossible to renounce in future, if I want to? Am I better off staying on my green card status, which maybe easier to give up?

My husband is on a green card. Once we move out of the US, there are a set number of years he is required to file taxes. I think it’s 8 years, then he is free from the irs.
I played with the idea of renouncing my US citizenship but my kids will still live there and have their careers there so I still need my passport to return to visit them. I just want to minimize or elminate any taxes when I retire overseas.

Very correct. I work 96-108 hours biweekly and I am struggling to even safe. Taxes takes roughly 37% and the rest goes for bills (very high cost of living here). We laugh at it every time at work as almost every one faces the same scenario, but it’s not funny. Pay check to pay check they call it. What a slave system. Little shake and people are homeless. No one cares from then on. Was sad after I did a research and found out majority of homeless people in major cities are Ex-veterans. Where did their military services and the pre-sign in promises go? Sad.

FYI, if you tried to make an appointment with a US embassy to start Social Security....you'd find it near impossible since Covid started....to get an appointment. Getting tax refunds for 2021? I'm still waiting (11 months since I submitted the tax return for a lousy $800 refund). There are various functions of the government which simply aren't working as advertised. They all use the argument of Covid.

Well, it was quite useful to fix the 2020 election. Some of the executive orders in various states have been made permanent which means it will be just about impossible to have honest elections anymore.

We are still trying to get an income tax refund from 2019.. initially stalled due to C17.. still I can rarely get a person on the phone at the IRS.
