My aunt who had Schizophrenia passed away this year... she was the most wonderful and hilarious person besides my dad that I have ever met. She was an artist as well and would make the cutest and sweetest cards with cartoon animals on them and loved her cats and talked and sang to the birds. Her husband adored her and cared for her and she died to cardiovascular problems/smoking and diabetes. We need to dispel the stigma about these people. The worst part was the times I noticed her condition the most was when she was paranoid about that maybe my mom or other adults told me about her, afraid I may think she was dangerous :( when in fact she was the most loving adoring, creative, and hilarious people I will ever meet. Rest in Peace, Laura
As a non schizophrenic person I just wanna say to the people that think it’s romanizing I don’t think so.. I think it’s more of humanizing and normalizing. schizophrenics can fall In love I mean it’s not a lot of movies about schizophrenia that’s not the creepy stalker serial killer guy that happens to have schizophrenia. I feel like this is a coming of age story. They have lives too yk .

It's based off the book and its OK, she's real 😂 if you want a story with that kind of twist I'd recommend Made You Up it has a similar premise but doesn't have a movie yet
Yea pretty much, guy/girl has a disorder/illness, guy/girl isolates, Meets guy/girl, they fall in love, she/he doesn’t want to hurt him/ her so he/she pushes her/him away, “give me a chance to love y-“ Yada yada, you seen one love story you’ve seen most of them. Only thing new in this is the schizophrenia which is really interesting
Talking about schizophrenia in a healthy manner by not making him seem like a psycho path and an interracial relationship? I'm game!!! Just let me know the release date😂😂😎
Ok that part where they were at the dance and he started seeing thing so he put his head on her shoulder and held her tight was so pure🥺 I’m definitely going to watch this

I actually have schizophrenia. It’s terrifying upsetting because most people don’t understand and you can’t make it stop or go away. It’s nice to see a character with it who isn’t considered a serial killer or anything like that. We are usually more dangerous towards ourselves than toward anyone else.
I have schizophrenia. I was diagnosed as a child which is rare unless its severe. I can say that everyone hallucinations can be diffrent but it shows the experience and feelings accurately. Its hard to deal with it and people in life certainly don't make it easier or try to understand. Im glad theyre coming out with a movie that accurately portrays schizophrenics as people and not monsters.
CJ Purdy liquid kitten says it perfectly. Everyone is different but the emotions and experience of it is. The things I see hear and feel are typically bad. But some people have good or a mixture. Some people have them all the time and some don’t. I do. Some people just hear voices. I see hear and feel them.
Alex Lesane wow that’s really fascinating, you seem like such an amazing person, I’m definitely looking forward to learn more about it and understand it better because I don’t want to be judgmental about something I know so little about!
Right ?! Sometimes I think they display it all to draw people in fear the central idea n’ basic gist won’t be enough. Like back in day they explained main idea had faith people would like the basic concept to come watch the detailed full movie. With movies being so quickly produce, and lets face it, usually containing pretty similar elements...I feel the trailers have display more details (giving the movie away) but desperately trying to stand out and draw folks in.
I know that’s what me and my family are always saying but I do want to know sort of what it’s like. They should make 2 trailers, one like this and one where they don’t spoil everything in the trailer
I’ve suffered from schizophrenia since I could remember and let me say this movie is LONG overdue. A lot of people don’t understand why one would keep to themselves or not want to get into a relationship
This looks promising! I wish they hadn’t shown the whole movie though lol. My first therapist was schizophrenic and I remember he told me he was bullied in school as a kid and sometimes his voices would make fun of the bullies and it would make him laugh and the bullies would ask what he’s laughing at but he would just walk away. I thought that was an adorable memory.
Honestly I love that so much it's like having a squad to mentally back you up 😂😂. It's so nice cuz schizophrenia in movies always portrays the voices and the people they see as bad/evil. The voices are telling them to kill or murder stuff like that. So it's freaking cool that your therapist had voices cheering him/her/it up

Awww this looks so good. I've never watched a movie from the perspective of someone with Schizophrenia. So I'm interested to see what I learn from this!
"When you have cancer, people are sympathetic. They feel something for you, and people even hold races to raise money for your cure. It’s different when people are afraid of what you’ve got, because then you get some of the sympathy but none of the support. They don’t wish you ill-they just want you as far away from them as possible. " (quote from the book) This mind set of people should be changed. people should not treat differently when someone has a mental illness. We are all human beings and we all should treat everyone equally.
This is truly sad, I remember years ago as a child my mother just found out that she was bipolar and she was so concerned that I would think differently of her and she told me not to tell any of my friends because she thought their parents would be wary of her. But even though I was kinda too young to understand I made sure she knew that it's okay.
@@Justifiedsinner220 She's still living with it but she's definitely more comfortable talking about it with me because I'm studying psychology in college (and I believe that I may be bipolar as well but I haven't been properly diagnosed yet). I now have a stepfather who has more sever bipolar disorder than her so she kinda understands what he goes through, it is hard to grow up with that but she's always working really hard and I love her for that.
I just saw this movie like 10 min ago, and I must say that it was AMAZING. They did a great job at not only portraying someone with a mental illness, but also what it truly means to support someone with one. I also appreciated how they represented God/Jesus and how Christians SHOULD be supportive of others. Definitely a movie for anyone who wants a better understanding, or anyone who likes the ‘coming of age’ genre in general
Wow! Just finished watching this amazing movie. And to think I was about to skip it before deciding to watch the trailer, which led me to this comment section, which in turn led me to watch it. I'm thankful to have read your comment. Without it I would have missed out so again, thank you @The Walking Mic.
Sooooo basically the trailer said he has a normal life, has an episode, finds out he’s schizophrenic, has a hard time adjusting and living with his changing environments and his meds, doesn’t cook anymore?, finds a friend, falls in love, breaks it off, finds love again with the same girl, and quits his meds, now he has the hang of his new normal? Why do trailers have to spoil the entire movie 🥺
@@hannahbittner8741 look, I'm an avid reader, I LOVE to read. But I do not believe that it is necessary for everyone to read a book before, or even after they watch the movie adaptation... most of the time (there are a few examples where the movie is so bad, that I dont want people to associate that story with the awful adaption... that only happens rarely though.) Anyway, reading is not a hobby for everyone. But it is definitely a hobby that I've personally enjoyed for years
@@Slow_Internet So? Hannah was just pointing out that, if a movie is based in a book, they don't have to hide anything because most of the interested people probably read it already
As a psychology student, I cannot tell you how refreshing it is to have schizophrenia depicted in a respecful, humane, and realistic light. The book really did justice to the reality of mental illness and blew me away. Hollywood and media has a tendency to glamorize mental illnesses, especially in the field of abnormal psychology and psychological disorders, and watching this trailer had me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to watch this adaptation!!
@@moonsetting I completely understand where you're coming from and you have every right to be; film and social media has been feeding off of mental illness tropes and labeling it as trendy for years now, not to mention the countless TV shows that glorify and normalize depression, anxiety, and other psychological disorders as being quirky. This book in particular was a breath of fresh air and I really hope the film stays true to the novel.
RainyDays2 Bro, just go to the library. Any pdf file or audio file you find for free online is illegal, which is fine to do if it’s a mainstream TV/MOVIE, but authors dont get as much love, rep, or exposure as media.
Baby Cat Libraries are open. You just have to wear a mask and check in. Not just that, but they have online apps where you can check books out for a limited time. Or you can get an e-book, or purchase the audiobook. Why thieve from a struggling artist/author, who doesn’t get as much exposure or money? Edit: also you used that meme wrong, lmao. How foolish
wait. wait this is so cute actually. its such a pleasant surprise to see a film where the person with mental illnesses (in this case schizophrenia) is not put as a villain or a murderer.
They BETTER include his stepfather. I loved this book and their relationship was one of my favorite parts. Also he had a whole other best friend at the school too. I really loved his relationship with maya, but that wasn’t all there was to this book and I really hope they don’t make it just about him and maya when there was more to the story.
I completely agree with you. I hope they don't only focus on maya and adam relationship when there's more to it. I also like adam and his step dad paul's relationship and there is a place in book where paul considers adam as his own son. Even though adam sometimes being rude his step dad, his step dad doesn't care about it. Also I like his best friend dwight. He is one of a kind friend that he has.
For those who didn’t know, this movie is actually based on a book(it says so at the end). It is an amazing book and i hope they do the story justice. If you’re interested in this story i would recommend you read it as well as watch the movie.
Agreed! I really hope the movie producers and director doesn’t butcher the intent and meaning behind accurately portraying a mental illness with strong negative depictions amongst the general public, despite not being as “dangerous” as the media has portrayed before.
FINALLY IVE BEEN LOOKING FIR SOMEONE WHI HAS READ THIS it’s an incredible book but it does seem like they changed a lot already I don’t really mind the ethnicity change in both of them but even the opening scene they really made it way more over the top than it was

To both of you; in some places movie theaters are starting to open back up again and they are most likely social distancing, making sure everything is clean; etc.
NewSallyPurpleYT : : yeah but people like to take off there shoes on the chairs and that’s not sanitary I don’t know people have shown they can’t handle themselves the 1st time stuff opened up
As a schizophrenic girl this is pretty true to my experience I did really see words all over the psych ward walls and on the tables. I did stand in the middle of the street and every time I said a mistruth ALL the street lights and lights of all the cars would switch off and when I told the truth they would all come on. I have felt earthquakes happening that made me totally sick and felt like the end of the world but only I could feel it. I have walked on a path and an Asian boy busker appeared he was a phantom with those most otherworldly incredible singing I ever heard in my life filling the street, I have looked on the floor and seen mermaids in huge visions and visions of different time periods on the ground too. I have been suddenly able to sing in Arabic with some magical quality to it, I have heard loud ancient music coming out of all the cars. When people tel me this film is too dramatic and far fetched, I don’t get that, because my episodes were all impossible magic. I have a mystical outlook and treat it is as it was known for thousands of years, as a spiritual illness or in my culture a spiritual emergence, it just means your liminal and can see in between worlds, that you have sharper senses into the spirit world, nothing more. This society has become so hyperrational and masculine it can’t bear a spiritual view or the truth snd medicalises everything. Psychiatry ignores thousands of years of spiritual traditions that explain these states.
YES! I’ve started to realize that so so so many things deemed to be “illnesses” in this culture, are not inherently so. Yes schizophrenia makes life difficult when you are trying to fit into western society that has no room for special people. But there are plenty of societies that have and do experience and hold schizophrenia as a gift and power. Those cultures are not “delusion” or “confused.” To say so is eurocentric and colonial. So sad to see our people of spiritual power be cast to the streets. That says a lot about this culture… that’s why were killing the earth too. No one wants to open their eyes, or their minds, or their hearts! :(
I don’t cry because of movies EVER but just the trailer has me crying. This is like watching a movie of my own life. I struggled with hallucinations all through elementary and middle school until I had my psychotic break and was hospitalized. After that hospitalization I changed schools because of all of the rumors floating around about me but that didn’t work because the rumors were just the same at my new school. I had a hard time getting close to people because I was scared they would leave me when they found out about my illness. I recently fell in love with the most amazing person on this planet and it’s hard because I’m scared that my illness will push this person away but just like the girl in this film, he loves me for who I am and can see past my illness. Absolutely crying.
This hits hard because my uncle had schizophrenia and he almost committed suicide. He was alone for a moment in his apartment and suddenly he said he saw the FBI crashing in from the walls and the roof flew open and a helicopter was circling the sky. He said that the microwave blew up and the world around him was on fire. Then he took the pills so he wouldn't have to die from the fire. I'm so sorry Uncle it took me years to understand you.
This is a good movie but accurately depicting schizophrenia I would say no. Most schizophrenics don’t hallucinate to this extreme. People think that’s what it is but it’s actually really subtle. I do think it portrays what they experience in life such a fear, paranoia, and distrust
Remember that every case is different, what is true for one schizophrenia case may not be true for another. If I remember correctly, in the TedTalk by Cecilia McGough, the way she described her hallucinations lined up well with this. She even said one of her hallucinations was sitting in the audience.
Just so you all know, this movie is about the book "Words on the Bathroom Walls" by Julia Walton. Its an amazing read and I completely recommend. I haven't watched the movie but the book really is amazing.
I was diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 16. I didn’t tell people for so long because I didn’t want people to compare me to a “psycho killer” or something like that. It’s so nice that I can relate to this movie.
I know the boy who plays the main character in the show, never watched it, but he used to live in my neighborhood. Family’s super nice, had them over for dinner and stuff
Just finished watching this movie. My mother also had schizophrenia. Glad she is doing fine now. And to those who's family or friends are diagnosed do watch this movie and help them. All they need is us to be around to understand and love them.
EXCUSE ME, ONLY IN THEATERS?!?!?! WHO THE HECK IS GOING TO A THEATER RIGHT NOW!?!?!? I NEED TO SEE THIS MOVIE BUT THERE'S NO WAY IM GOING TO A THEATER WITH EVERYTHING THATS GOING ON
Omg that’s what I was thinking like I hope this whole movie doesn’t turn out to be in his mind smh that would be heartbreaking like I would hate for that to be a plot twist
Just watched this. The end left me in tears. The movie was raw, candid, and did not shy away from showing the battles fought in co-existing with the disorder. I hope this starts the trend of creating more movies that approach mental illness with a frank honesty.
My best friend has this. But his is triggered out of PTSD. He...has so many talents. (‘: I love him. Literally. Watching him go through things like this makes me cry. Because I want him to remember how much he is loved. Especially by me. So giving him the best by being patient and ect. Idk how else to explain it. I did a shit ton of research.
i just watched the movie and....wow....this is incredible, it's well written and you will fall in love with the characters honestly i highly recommend it
I wish they made the girl talk like a normal teenager rather than the weird philosophical way that’s become popular with YA movies. Other than that this looks like a great movie
0:20 this happens to me all the time! I imagine that the stuff is like floating or something wayyyy out of this world. Where gravity doesn't exist. (I sneezed like 17 times halfway through typing this wtf) (ran to the bathroom to blow my nose after *exist.*) oh and btw I saw this trailer from spotify. stopped gaming and just looked at the name of the ad and searched it on yt
This movie would of been perfect if it wasn't for the corny romantic ending, they was barely intimate throughout the film yet she proclaims her love for him which made no sense
Yay a movie where the schizophrenic isn’t a crazed psycho killer like how they’re always portrayed!!!

I actually have schizophrenia. It’s terrifying upsetting because most people don’t understand and you can’t make it stop or go away. It’s nice to see a character with it who isn’t considered a serial killer or anything like that. We are usually more dangerous towards ourselves than toward anyone else.
From what you saw in the trailer do you think the visuals are good representation of having schizophrenia?
I’m diagnosed schizophrenic bipolar, this is a good representation
i might watch the movie but cmon what is up with these trailers giving away the entire movie? it’s all i ever see within any trailer now
Yeah, now I'm like... "This seems cool, but it also seems like I've already watched it"
Trueeeee
I know that’s what me and my family are always saying but I do want to know sort of what it’s like. They should make 2 trailers, one like this and one where they don’t spoil everything in the trailer
Frrr
I’ve suffered from schizophrenia since I could remember and let me say this movie is LONG overdue. A lot of people don’t understand why one would keep to themselves or not want to get into a relationship
The movie is really sad I want to hug him when his feeling down. This movie really hits home :'(
This looks promising!
Omg, that's awesome!
Loll I bet that got them to shut up
Honestly I love that so much it's like having a squad to mentally back you up 😂😂. It's so nice cuz schizophrenia in movies always portrays the voices and the people they see as bad/evil. The voices are telling them to kill or murder stuff like that. So it's freaking cool that your therapist had voices cheering him/her/it up
I loved your comment❤️
they didn't show the whole movie, there's alot more than that in the film

(quote from the book)
This mind set of people should be changed. people should not treat differently when someone has a mental illness.

Agreed! I really hope the movie producers and director doesn’t butcher the intent and meaning behind accurately portraying a mental illness with strong negative depictions amongst the general public, despite not being as “dangerous” as the media has portrayed before.

Because “only in theatres” is going to work so well with the current state of the global pandemic 😐
Zoe Akin-Amland that’s what I was thinking this movie sounds so good but with the pandemic I can’t go to the movies safely.
To both of you; in some places movie theaters are starting to open back up again and they are most likely social distancing, making sure everything is clean; etc.
NewSallyPurpleYT : : yeah but people like to take off there shoes on the chairs and that’s not sanitary I don’t know people have shown they can’t handle themselves the 1st time stuff opened up
AveryPlays_YT; people will do that but then after the movie is over they would clean all of the chairs that people sat in social distancing.
NewSallyPurpleYT : : i don’t know Better be safe than sorry
why he talk like charlie from perks of being a wallflower
this movie looks good but the trailer gave away like...the whole plot
Sending you love, light, and strength. You got this girl.
I'm so sorry Uncle it took me years to understand you.
this book is so good. im excited for the adaptation
This is a good movie but accurately depicting schizophrenia I would say no. Most schizophrenics don’t hallucinate to this extreme. People think that’s what it is but it’s actually really subtle. I do think it portrays what they experience in life such a fear, paranoia, and distrust
I would say he has a severe case. I have similar hallucinations but they aren't as frequent as the movie protrays his
Remember that every case is different, what is true for one schizophrenia case may not be true for another. If I remember correctly, in the TedTalk by Cecilia McGough, the way she described her hallucinations lined up well with this. She even said one of her hallucinations was sitting in the audience.
I don't like the music. The other stuff is good.
So y’all not going to stop the dude next to him, and that he looks like Rodrick 1:44

Just watched this. The end left me in tears. The movie was raw, candid, and did not shy away from showing the battles fought in co-existing with the disorder. I hope this starts the trend of creating more movies that approach mental illness with a frank honesty.
Literally me and my husband but it’s clinical depression. 🥺 I’m there for him no matter how bad it gets, even though he wants better for me 😞
The boy is really cute and a good actor as well. We don't often see this combination now days.
