  • 1-color brioche pattern (Abbr: brk=brioche knit as in knit the 2 st together; k=knit; sl=slip the stitch purlwise; st=stitch; yf=yarn forward; yo=yarn over)
    Cast on an odd number of st) using the long-tail cast on (link to that video: • How to do long tail ca... ). For the blue variegated scarf in video, I cast on 27 st with US size 9 needles using one 5.3 oz of Lion Brand Yarns Scarfie yarn.
    Set up row: k1, *yf, sl1, yo, k1. Repeat from * until the end.
    Row 1: k1, *brk1, yf, sl1. Repeat from * until last 3 st, then brk1, k1.
    Row 2: k1, *yf, sl1, brk1. Repeat from * until last 2 st, then yf, sl1, k1.
    Repeat rows 1 and 2 until work measures desired length (For the blue scarf, 1 skein provided scarf 4 ft long & 6 in wide. Cast off st once done and weave in ends using a tapestry needle).

    I saw the Brioche Knit in a magazine years ago, say maybe 40 or more, and I was determined to learn it. I finally learned the stitch with a lot of frustrating interaction with only written instructions. I haven't knitted in years, I never really did knit. I had forgotten all about my one encounter with brioche. Now I recall the article and how the author didn't understand why people had trouble knitting it. Your tutorial is very responsive and clear. I think I can now do the stitch. You are wonderful. Thank you.

      So sorry. Sadly, I've been there lots of times with lace patterns; laziness to put in a lifeline gets me sometimes. But they are timesavers, especially with finicky stitches like Brioche o Fisherman's rib. Hope the rest of the project is all smooth sailing.

      I couldn’t agree with you more. That k1, knit below doesn’t work for me- at least for now. Been trying since last year; who knew I would be able to get it right with this brioche method- I wasn’t even going to attempt it thinking it was just as intimidating- but it isn’t. Too me it’s easier and Ms KnittyCat did an excellent job illustration and giving fabulous instructions-. I’m almost done with my first ever brioche knit scarf! Yaaay.

    Thank you very much for this video ! I am French and I live in France so apologise my bad English ! I found another stitch that looks a bit like the brioche stitch but it's easier : You put the the stitches on the needle and then knit : 2 stitch , 2 pearl, 2 stitch, 2 pearl and so on ! You must end with 1 stitch. You repeat always this row !! You will see ; it's very close to the brioche stitch ; we in France call it " the false brioche stitch" ! Many kind greetings from Brittany - France !

Merci aussi for sharing the false brioche stitch pattern. I will give it a try for sure. Happy holidays et Joyeux Noel!

      Knit 2, purl 2 is simply a ribbed stitch. The Brioche stitch makes the pattern nicely thick and puffy/cushy . Regular rib is flat with no depth.

      Thank You! You made it look so easy. I want to start a man’s scarf tomorrow. What size yarn should I use and how many stitches wide? I want it at least 60 inches long. The man I’m making it for is about 6’4. I hope you can give me an up’s on this.Would really appreciate if you could. Thank you so much for sharing

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  6 лет назад

      +Marilyn Reasons Hi Marilyn, thanks for watching my video and for your question. Sorry for my delayed reply; been a busy week. Since different yarns and needle sizes will produce a scarf of varying width, would suggest first picking the yarn you like (a wool or wool bllend would be nice). Then you can pick a pair of needles (4 to 6 mm size, which would be US sizes 6, 7, or 8), and make a small swatch (cast about 15 sts and follow the pattern, making a piece at least a couple inches long). That will give you an idea as to how wide a piece 15 sts will give you. If it gives you a width of about 2 inches, then you will need to cast on 45 sts (3 × 15 sts) to get a scarf 6 inches wide. Increasing the needle size, will give you a wider swatch and decreasing will give you a smaller swatch. The length of the scarf you can decide as you knit. Hope this helps and you knit up a wonderful man's scarf. Reach out if you have more questions. Happy Knitting!😊

    Thank you. There's a stitch that is indistinguishable to this, at least with my yarn, that's much easier. Just repeat k1, k1b for the entire project. I'm currently working on both, simultaneously, with the same yarn. No difference. The advantage to the other stitch is that there are no yarn overs or slips or differences at ends of rows. The advantage to this one is you can read your stitches and know where you are.

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  2 года назад +1

      Great point! That other stitch you mention (with the k1b) is Fisherman's rib (I call it Brioche's cousin but perhaps Brioche's twin may be a better nickname for it). 😊

    Thank you for including the pattern.
    It was immeasurably helpful!
    One thing that was confusing was on the setup row.
    After the yf, sl1 you say yo then knit.
    What I found confusing was that the yarn position after the yf, sl1 WAS in a position that you didn’t need to do an additional yo (as pattern reads), but just knit.
    Bc of the yarn already being fwd, there is not option but to go around needle to knit, which to me is not a true yarn over.
    So you see how a person new to the brioche would be confused?
    This stitch has eluded me for a long time & I’m determined to get it.
    Also it is so confusing because so many different patterns out there that are different. I’ve also noticed this with Fishermen’s Rib. Again, I learn so well from you and I have liked and subscribed. Thank you🙏🏻🙂🥢🧶

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  4 года назад

      Thanks so much, Debbie! I totally missed responding to your comment. I am so glad you found this video useful and I can see why it can be confusing. When I posted this, I had recently learned brioche after a long struggle myself, but now am very comfortable with this stitch. I am sure you will get there too. And yes, some RUclips videos on the brioche stitch actually show the Fisherman's rib, which has a similar look but is different (you can check out my 1-color Fisherman's rib video at ruclips.net/video/xiNZMcTCKgM/видео.html). For the brioche stitch, yes, agree that you don't need to another "yarn over". A better way for the pattern would be to say "sl 1 st with yarn forward" (or sl1wyf as the abbreviation). That way, the yarn position is in the front when you slip the stitch and then when you go to do the BRK, it creates the brioche stitch (so no additional yarn over needed). Hope this helps (: Thanks for watching and best wishes!

    hi knitty cat! your video is amazing and you're a great teacher. i followed this step by step tutorial and i know now how to bark. my 1-color edging is perfect as well.
    now, i am attempting to make a 2-color brioche pattern. but the edging is kinda weird. so i thought of reviewing the instructions. i belatedly noticed that there is an extra yo in the set up row (which is not in the 1-color step by step tutorial.)
    am i missing something which can explain why my edging is off? thank you so much.

    I love the look of this stitch but I keep messing it up. I must have torn it out in frustration over 40 times!! Your explanations are so clear perhaps you could do a video on repairing slipped stitches, wrong yarn overs; or most importantly how to recognize typical errors. I usually can't recognize the type of error I've made.

      Thanks, Lydia! Glad to hear you like the stitch and sorry to hear about the issues. I have done a couple "correcting errors" but not specific to brioche stitch. Will definitely plan to do some very soon. And here's to you mastering this stitch some day soon. Thanks so much for watching and best wishes🤗

    If I'm using 12ply yarn 5.5mm needles how many stitches should I cast on to knit a scarf? You have explained so well, so I want to try this. I'm a beginner.

    • @KnittycatsKnits

      Thanks, Prasanna, and welcome to the knitting community! Good question! The best way to know the number of stitches to cast on for a scarf if to determine the gauge by knitting a small swatch (sample). Please see my video on how to this at ruclips.net/video/OcH0elMUdxo/видео.html. Hopefully this helps but let me know if you still have questions. Thanks so much for watching and best wishes for the project!🤗
