What Happened to Freddo the Drone? Drone Hijacking??

  • Did we fall victim to a drone hijacking? Is it possible to hijack a drone? I do a deep analysis of what happened to Freddo the Drone.
On today's vlog, I wanted to explain what I thought happened to the drone. The comment section yesterday made it seem like we were victims of a drone hijacking. But, I don't think it's possible. For one, I think there's no way that anyone would have known we were flying a drone. Second of all, when I did some research I came up with a theory that makes more sense than the idea that the drone was hijacked.
So, in the vlog I explain my theory.
Then, after deciding that our drone was likely not a part of some crazy drone hijacking, Greg and I headed out to shoot some photography.
This photography vlog is part #drone and part photography vlog.

I might sound like captain obvious but, did you wait to see if the obstacle avoidance system on the drone may have returned it to where it was launched from?

Interesting theories. I had a similar situation happen over water. I was at a beach and there is a half of a shipwreck just off the coast sticking out of the water. There were some people jumping off of it so I thought it would be cool to catch a few jumps so I flew out to them. I was about 150 feet away from myself and maybe 25 feet above the water and all of the sudden the screen goes black and I lost connection. I panicked. Did I think maybe I was too low? Maybe a seagull hit it, maybe someone splashed it, I didn't know. Anyway in my panicked state I tried to remain calm and think what I learned from other you tubers. I remembered that I had a go home set if I lost connection but it seemed it wasn't working and also there was no way to tell it to by phone. After a few minutes go by I noticed on my actual controller that the RPM was still revving and that I was at a high altitude but I still couldn't see it. I hit the go home button on my controller and it started beeping that it was actively going home. THANK F*** for that. It did return to my launch point successfully. This was with the Mavic Pro. My question is I know in a panic shit happens but did anyone try reading the info on the controller LCD screen or attempt to hit the go home button on the controller, not the phone? Sorry for your loss. I would have been devastated. On a side note the drone still recoreded even when it lost connection.

Thanks mate. It was a tough one as I've flown so many hours and only had this one real crash. The fact that it isn't my drone and a brand new Mavic 2 doesn't help, but the good news is we've found a solution/replacement and now closure on the incident. Mistakes happen and best we can do is address the issue, take appropriate action, and move forward.

Lots of people are having problems with the Mavic 2's with signal cutting off , but what i've noticed is it's been caused mostly by the DJI goggles . All dji drones should actually return to home if it loses signal but still to have that many problems with them is not right . Another thing is the compus might have gotten magnetized while setting up and getting ready to fly but the drone should have a sencer that tells you that. I tell my students don't put your drone on the hood or trunk of your car and turn it on because it's metal and might effect the compus. And once the compus is screwd RTH could be miles away . I've been building drones for the past 10-15 years and DJI has been making DIY kits way before they started selling ready to fly Phantoms and still way back then i've been having software issues with Dji ... looks like it hasn't changed . Hope your insurance can take care of you.

Because you went below your altitude, due to all the rocks, it most likely just lost signal. As a suggestion, never fly with the DJI goggles. I had many instances where I was the spotter, as well as using the goggles and they would loose signal. I'd never trust them alone to fly with. I'm sorry about Mavic.

It sucks about your drone, but given your new theory of what happened, it actually makes the situation quite funny. From memory, the guy on the beach took off in a hurry, right? He was gone by the time Greg got down there.
From his perspective, he was snooping on you and then all of a sudden he sees one of you start sprinting seemingly after him, and so he must have shit himself and taken off in a hurry thinking that Greg was coming to confront him.

Hey, Brendan van Son, it's a pity what happened to your friend ''Freddo the Drone"" (not sure if that is the right spelling), I know how it feels like, I crashed mine and I didn't even see what it crashed into, then when it fell down it was run into by a car, yeap I know poor story right ? Sadly I knew about DJI care refresh after the accident happened, but you are lucky that you have it, if I were you I would find the way to get down the coast to the beach and find Freddo for its replacement, "of course that is just if you are 100% sure of your theory and your drone is down there" you most likely know how to swim, if not, get someone who does to help you, it's just a proposal and something I would definitely do for a device that is worth 2,000 euros. Good luck man.

After more than 30 years of flying R/C aircraft with over 25 being at the instructor level, the one thing that should always be done is - Have a spotter ! A capable flier who is doing nothing more than be an observer and advisor of the airspace you are operating in. If you fly out of line of sight, a problem is presented...Unfortunate part of these Quad-copter drones is so many are being operated by people who have no background.....I know, Greg is certified by somebody who tests and approves, but how much background beyond this is generally in the fliers back pocket. It's a shame and an expensive lesson to learn that you need to keep your eyes on what your doing and have a spotter. Sorry if it sounds harsh, but the reality is, would this have happened if there was an extra set of eyes on the situation ?.......From watching you both, I know you'll both bounce back....forwards to the future.............................

I dont think so, maybe you should have a spotter if you are talking about a big-medium production, but why someone needs to have a spotter for to fly a Drone for Hobbie.

    • @TheAdkFlyer10
      @TheAdkFlyer10 6 лет назад +3

Ah yes, the "always fly with a spotter" lecture... It is good advise, and yes he had other people there to act as a spotter, but I can say that I rarely ever have a spotter (I'm usually flying alone). If I'm ever in doubt, I look at my screen!
The irony here is that had Greg NOT been flying LOS he never would've lost the drone. He would have been looking at his screen, looking at the HUD information that was telling him where his drone was. I understand why he was flying LOS, he thought he was watching his own drone. But as soon as it appeared to be not responding to his commands, he should have looked at his screen...
      My 2 cents!

This is similar to what happened to me with my phantom 4 pro a while back, I was flying my drone back to my garden in RTH mode when I see another identical drone come from the same direction , it stopped just after I see it flying towards me , I thought it was mine and out of control because it was not responding to my movements and it flew off, I shit myself , luckily I looked at the iPad and see that my drone was still about 500m away, also a good altitude and still in RTH , if I was lower I could of crashed it maybe as you can still control it in RTH , could have been a different story if I was in manual mode and closer to home as there is a lot of quite big trees ,I actually caught the other drone fly back to its own garden as well lol

    • @sothakem8321

I believe Greg weren't watching the screen, if he did he would been able to recover the drone, the screen will tell him the distance, the height, and the direction of the drone, instead he was busy chase after the wrong drone, if you no longer watching the screen, essentially you are no longer fly the drone.

greg's situational awareness is not what it should be when flying a expensive piece of hardware. he is to blame, if your theory is correct. the other thing is, as long as he was not in sport mode the sensors should have picked up (constant beeping) any rock face, unless is was perhaps traveling too fast. Lastly, did you inspect the cliff face with your back-up drone?

Hey Brendad, Hey Greg, im just curious about this accident, I have DJI P4+ and planing to get this Mavic Pro 2 soon. My questions is, how this happens? does the obstacle avoidance sensor doesn't work on this scenario, the drone supposedly fly up when it sees obstacle in front right? or because it was inside cliff so maybe when the sensor sense something in-front, it was already inside the cliff? Im just trying to analyst more based on what Brendan demonstrate because the obstacle avoidance should work on this. Just curious! @Greg, it happens to me when 3 of us flying together at the same time all the same drone, I noticed it doesn't react on my controller, luckily my instinct work quick, I used the compass and map to navigate. This really happens. So sorry for the lost!

  • @sothakem8321

I think your theory may or may not be true, my question is why didn't Gregg kept his eye on the screen, if he did he would know from the view show on the screen, of where his drone position is, and would take corrected action to recover the drone, instead of blindlesslly ran after the wrong drone, I have to said this but Gregg is not a good pilot, you lost Freddo because of pilot error, when I fly my drone, I all way kept my eye constantly on my mobile screen, or on the drone itself, so I know all the time of where my drone is.

Very reasonable explanation. I once confused my white Phantom 3, with a seagull. The seagull flew off, like seagulls do, and I thought I was watching my Phantom fly off. Arrrrgh! "Where's my drone going?". I did as you suggested. I took hands off the controls. Took a deep breath. Took some seconds to think through the situation, and then just initiated Return to Home. Of course, the seagull kept flying, so I thought RTH was not working. I was getting really bummed, but then heard a buzzing above my head. I looked up ... My drone! Yeaaaaah. Ha. It's easy to confuse something else, for your drone.

The mavic 2 has a collision system, why it crashed? Normally when you don't understand what your drone is doing, go up up up, and hit return to home. Clearly in the moment it's a lot of stress and time is running against you.
I was flying once my mavic pro near a phantom. The mavic pro radio signal caused an interference for the phantom radio signal . The phantom pilot had a lot of trouble to fly his drone. Other thing, when I am updating my mavic pro at home via wifi, in this time I can't connect with other devices to my router.

Your last working theory is spot on. Running away with the RC made it worst. BTW having a solid bind with a craft doesn't mean you'll disconnect and obtain another one on a nearby flying drone. I have tons of flying experience and even have flown with another craft in sight and this has never happened, hence your last theory is correct.

It sucks, but drones are disposable items in my view, the only things i can suggest in the future, is always download your info or swap out memory cards between flights, but also consider the use of a skin, it makes your drone stand out in a different way in such situations, it sounds like you didn't have a big distance from you, just an identification issue, it is easily done for sure...

That makes sense. I don't think it would be possible for another controller to accidentally "take over" your drone. What an unbelievable freak accident.

Hi Brendan, I lost my drone something similar to like scenario only my lost the connection with the drone because there where other towers or signals interrupting the connection between my Mavic and the transmitter. I did reported that but DJI didn't do anything and they gave me this as an answer:

My first drone which was the DJI Mavic Air was something I put all my money on. I’m just 16 & I’ve flow other cheap helicopters & quads that were harder. I watched Soo much videos just so I won’t miss a thing. My 3rd day of having the drone I took it to my park & I got amazing shots but it was getting dark so I click return home. As it returned home it flew straight up the sky so I got worried so I canceled & flew back my self. Out of no where the drone was at a good height above me & I see I’m moving my drone. I look at my screen & I see my screen has just cut out. Then out of luck my drone ended up landing in such a rough way. To this day I’m no longer able to fly because it would no longer respond to anything

There is another explanation: Greg panicked when saw the second drone (who he believed it was yours) fly away, hit RTH and your drone being closed to the cliff starts ascending and hit the cliffs. Anyway, I am so sorry this happened and yes, you can't let him pay you. Is a honest mistake anyway you look at it. There is no hijack possibility. Each drone pair with its controller using different frequency.

Similar thing happened to me a few weeks ago. My Mavic was in RTH over 2.5 miles out over open water for around 5 minutes... time enough to put the controller down beside me, roll a cigarette and smoke it (total 10 minute retun.) From nowhere I heard and eventually saw another Mavic coming towards me and right past me. My initial response was panic as I knew I was in auto rth. Had to look at my iPad for a second or two before I realised mine was still over sea, com ing back and someone else was flying an identical Mavic lol. Says something for wraps I suppose.

Did the screen go blank cause the drone lost signal because it was down below where Greg was? What was the drone set to do when it lost signal? RTH? Hover? Land? If the phone w/app went blank, wouldn't the RC still work? Serious mystery that needs to be solved for all of us. Thx, hope to see update.

Whether the other drone pilot was operating LOS or not we do not know; However, the other pilot flying over y'all is illegal. DJI in the future should have a Drone Proximity notification just so you're aware of another drone operator. I fly a DJI Spark and it's practically stealth unless you know where to look for it. It's especially hard to see if you're backlit from your perspective. It's also very quiet. In short, another drone user that wants to be curious should always be in earshot of the other pilot.

Not a freak accident. Freak accident is when your walking with an umbrella above your head and lightning strikes but it doesnt hit you, instead it hits the tree behind you which breaks and falls on top of you. That is a freak accident. Yours is just pure negligent. Since all mavic drones are similar, in shapes and sizes at least have a unique identifier, physical identifier like a tag or a skin to differentiate it from the rest. Also your pilot needs to focus on one thing and only one thing, your drone. I dont even let anyone Pilot my drone because its worth $2,000. Are you that stupid to let anyone pilot it for you? Exactly how much experience does he have to easily confuse your drone for someone elses. In the end, its a user error. Nothing to see here. Case closed.

It’s best in a huge well lit area to use those goggles in my opinion. And have a spotter. Especially if your shooting time lapse for a while in one stationary area. Anyway I hope for your sake you had insurance!!!!

So now it means that if I buy a drone, which I think about a little bit more every day, I will put some flashy fluorescent stickers on it on each faces, just to be sure to identify mine with no doubt to avoid this problem. Because when I was playing on Mario (very good example, by the way) I was always switching on the other one.

  • @jargon999

Ultimately, it's the operators fault. He should have noticed that when he's trying to control it, it's not responding in the way he intended. Also he should have been paying attention to the distance and height indicators and what the drone was seeing. I understand I would be extremely confused too, but why was he not paying attention to what the drone was seeing? One time my drone was on the other side of a cruise ship I was hired to film and all communication was lost and I was about 1.5 km away. So I didn't panic and just hit return to home. Long story short the drone avoided colliding with a high-rise because of the sensors and finally reconnected signal when it got close enough. Moral of the story - Don't panic.

best thing to do whenever you think there is a connection issue, ie losing camera feed or loss of control.........climb to increase altitude without touching right stick.......just climb. In this case, which it was confused with another drone, if you had gained altitude you would have gotten back your video feed as an example.
