  • I've received a lot of questions lately about how I interface the computer with the console and my outboard gear. The short answer is the patchbay but there is more to it than that. I'll try and answer those questions in this video.

    Hey everyone! Today's (Feb. 1) Live Broadcast at 6pm I'll be setting up a simple patchbay setup with an interface, compressor, summing mixer, etc... from scratch.

    Hey Charlie great video! You make it very easy to understand. One question on your mic / line inputs to the Trident. If you are using a different preamp than the Trident, how do you patch it in before the console? The signal will be line level after the outboard pre. Do you have another 24 inputs in the patchbay for all the 1/4" line inputs on the console that are separate from the XLR mic inputs? Thanks a bunch

      I’ll mooch off that question... Towards the end of the vid: taking the (line level) kick from Logic, then into the Overstayer mic pre?? Is there a DI box somewhere in between there?

    Thanks. Do you have a tutorial on how you wire this up, how to solder it, D connectors etc. Also was that a Quadraverb I saw in the background, was about to sell mine but thought it might be worth keeping as it might have some old school sounds you can't get with plugins etc?

    I have 2 questions if you could please answer I would be so appreciative! 1. Can you explain the cable setup you use to get from the mic jacks in the rooms directly to the patchbay? Also can you explain how you set up the insert points to the patchbay? Are you just using a TRS y cable? Would greatly appreciate your answer thanks for your awesome videos!

    Can I patch snake to preamp to converter with only one patch bay. Redco 96 point to be exact.
    I want to normal all the patching but how can I do that with only two rows of patching? Is that not possible?

    • @Ultimatestudiosinc
      @Ultimatestudiosinc  3 года назад

      Hey Decibel Studios! That's 3 patch points so 1 patchbay will be tough. You could have the snake come in on the top row --> feed the preamp on the bottom row --> then have the preamp output on the top row --> feeding the converter on the bottom row (directly below preamp out). That could work if that makes sense?

    Greetings. Are your effects jacks in Thru mode or are they normaled as well? Does using normalled jacks cause feedback loops?

    • @Ultimatestudiosinc
      @Ultimatestudiosinc  2 года назад +1

      The patch bays for the outboard gear are non-normalled. So to pass audio patching has to happen. This eliminates any looping issues.

    Actually looking at getting a small format mixer, for a couple different reasons that I have convinced myself of;) I wanted to know when you set up or a mixing session, do you have to patch from your I/O back to your console, for is that connection already made on the back of the patchbay?

    • @Ultimatestudiosinc
      @Ultimatestudiosinc  4 года назад

      Wes Powers Hey Wes! The main i/o connections to get in and out of the DAW are already setup in the patchbay. So if I’m stying inside of 24 channels I don’t have to patch a thing to get it back out to the board. If I’m using the console as a split console (faders and monitor section become separate inputs) then I have to patch. When I record the stereo out of the Trident back to the DAW to print my mix it goes through my mix i/o which is an Apogee Rosetta 200.

      Cables can be a hot topic among audio professionals. Ernesto (my partner) and I have done a TON of blind tests with different types of cables. From cheap to expensive. I've also read a ton of studies about it too. Copper is copper and I find that most cables, even cheap ones, have good solder joints. What it really comes down to is shielding. As long as the shielding is good the cable should be fine. Inexpensive cables can work just fine. I've used Hosa right next to Mogami and they sound identical. Mogami will have a better build quality which should last longer but there is a lot of placebo effect.
      This all changes if you start having longer cable runs. If your 15-20 feet or less you shouldn't have any problems with cheaper cables. Including TT patch cables. When cables runs start getting long I do find there is a difference in quality. My longest cable runs in the studio are 30 feet and it's Mogami snake. For the patchbay I have some Mogami, some custom stuff I bought off of ebay, and some Hosa's that I bought when I needed a bunch extra and didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars. I've had the custom cables go bad and 1 Mogami go bad. Not one Hosa has had an issue. I'm actually baffled by that. :)
      Long story short is there isn't a huge difference. And I've done my research and personal tests.
      Sorry for being long winded...

    Do you ever have a problem using the unbalanced inserts on the board with balanced outboard gear? Or do you just always use the direct in and outs to avoid it?

    • @Ultimatestudiosinc
      @Ultimatestudiosinc  7 лет назад +1

      Hey Graham! So far no I haven't had any issues. With cable runs that short unbalanced usually isn't a problem.

    Two things:
    1) Some close-ups would be helpful.
    2) How is phantom power handled?

    • @Ultimatestudiosinc
      @Ultimatestudiosinc  7 лет назад

      Phantom power comes from the pre. The patchbay doesn't generate anything, it only passes signal through.

    • @lukpac
      @lukpac 7 лет назад

      So you have to be careful not to change the patching of the mic lines when the pres have phantom turned on, correct?

    • @Ultimatestudiosinc
      @Ultimatestudiosinc  7 лет назад +2

      Correct. As a rule, if I'm patching a channel that has phantom I'll shut it off first, make the patch, and then turn it back on. But sometimes in the middle of sessions we're in a hurry and forget to shut it off. Never had a problem but I would recommend turning it off first.
