I remember right after I finished clannad I went on RUclips, looking for videos, discussions, reviews, anything, and with the exception of maybe a dozen videos, there was nothing. It always felt really weird how little clannad content there was on RUclips, for such a popular series. And here we are, with Tota single handedly doubling the amount of clannad content on RUclips.
But I think the Clannad community is so active in the comments below the Clannad's music videos. Nevertheless, I agree that Tota is the Clannad's specialist, whose videos are focusing straight on the VN's and anime's plot.
You gave me a new appreciation for this route. I never really clicked with it on the level that I did for Tomoyo, Nagisa, and Kotomi's routes, and it didn't even make me cry as much as in Kappei or Fuko's routes. Maybe it's just me, but while Kyou's route did a decent job of making me feel a pit in my stomach, and be uncomfortable and conflicted, it just didn't make me feel near as strong of emotions as the other routes. There was no grand tragedy of loss of life or threat of death, or a soul crushing face-to-face with your own inadequacy in comparison to the perfect transfer student. Just the melancholic mire of being trapped between 2 different girls that you want to like both of, but none of it feels right. So while this story maybe wasn't meant for me, your video definitely helped put it into perspective for me just how well crafted it was, and how well it pulled off an interesting plot that's really set apart from all the others. And lots of foreshadowing and smart dialogue that probably went over my head.
I ain't gonna lie: their OVA should have been two parts. It's hard to get attached when it's six minutes in and Tomoya is already having buyer's remorse dating Ryou. Shelley Calene-Black's voice acting when she's screaming at Tomoya is top-tier though.
A damn good video talking about my favorite route of the VN. Kyou's route hit me in a way that all of the other routes just didn't quite get (Tomoyo and Yukine were pretty close), excluding After Story. The self-sacrificing actions of Kyou and the selfish actions of all three keeping the status quo going, the interactions of the characters (especially Tomoya and Kyou) and just... ugh, I love this route so much. Easily my favorite of Clanand with Kyou being my favorite girl
Finally got around to watching this video, lol! Honestly I think you gave me some extra appreciation for the route. It’s never been one of my favourite Clannad routes, and even now I don’t think I’d call it that, but I can absolutely see why you love it so strongly. The theme of fear was something that I never even noticed, somehow. It’s kind of funny how the route is so similar to MOON in two ways; they both have a focus on fear, and both hit hard because they intentionally try to make you uncomfortable. And actually, it even shares that similarity with the Sunohara route, come to think of it. Just some shower thoughts, lol.
I'm happy you liked this route. For me, it was insufferable. It's one thing to create a story where two girls like the same guy, suffer for it because they're close themselves and end it with a bittersweet ending of only one of them realizing her love - but it's another thing completely to force the player to make the wrong choices to reach the right ending. I'm glad it's obvious from the start Tomoya is much more compatible with and drawn towards Kyou than her sister. I wouldn't want this to be a story where we have to either guess which is the right one or pick one of two "equal" options, making Tomoya's character inconsistent. But if the answer is in front of us and we are given the choices between the two, why are THOSE inconsistent? One moment we're supposed to prefer long hair and pick the pendant Kyou likes, the next we're supposed to kiss Ryou and progress the relationship with her. Tomoya screws up in the story plenty, sure, but this is the one time we are forced to make Tomoya's bad choices for him, not just observe him do so. And don't give me the "immersion" argument, because I relate absolutely not at all to any of these three characters. I understand them, sure, their motivations and dilemmas inform their actions logically, cause-and-effect-style, but the amount of contrived coincidences and melodramatic arguments makes it feel like a completely different game than the masterpiece I've been playing until now. In the first place, I don't see Tomoya as we know him agree to date Ryou just because she likes him and Kyou pushes for it. Not even to "get to know her better", because since when does Tomoya believe himself as capable of making someone else happy? Since when does he actually fear Kyou in a serious way? Since when does he even want a girlfriend like Sunohara would, instead of just wanting some peace and quiet away from his father? Kyou's feelings are way to obvious for me to believe Ryou is oblivious and sure enough she wasn't - but she was portrayed as such for the entire game. Clannad's characters are never what they seem, sure, but the hidden depths are always hinted at somewhat, foreshadowed a little. Ryou never struck me as so in love with Tomoya that she'd sacrifice her sister for a relationship with him. If anything, she seemed to have the tiniest of crushes on him, comparable to Mei's fan-crush on Yuusuke or Sunohara's crush on Sanae. It didn't seem serious, but suddenly this route asks me to treat it like the biggest of deals. I'm not saying that quiet waters can't run deep and that she had to be more vocal and active about how she felt, but at least some hints in her behaviour or dialogue would've been nice. Kyou got a ton of those, like you said, even in other routes. She treated Tomoya as a friend and it was 100% believable he would be unaware of her romantic feelings for him, but it didn't stop the writers of letting the player know about them. I didn't feel anything serious from Ryou, who just asked Tomoya to not skip class a couple of times and maybe read his fortune once. The reveal that Ryou was so passionate about Tomoya comes off as a poor justification for why the route made the characters, especially Tomoya and Ryou, completely unlike themselves. "No, you don't get it, she was always a completely different character, we just didn't write her like that until now!" And oh my God, this route felt like 90% unnecessary moping from every character involved. Like it could be cut in half length-wise and only improve. Tomoya is NOT an emo who'd kiss a girl he didn't feel for, especially when he knew it was destroying her relationship with her twin sister. He liked them both and he hated himself, he would absolutely prioritize fixing their sisterly bond over keeping one of them in a fake relationship. Imagine he had the fake relationship with Mei but instead of the reason being trying to break Sunohara out of his stupor, it was because Mei actually one-sidedly crushed on him. Then imagine that THAT became the cause of the siblings' relationship starting to crumble. Are you really telling me Tomoya wouldn't say "I'm not the guy worth throwing away your brother for, he might be a screw-up, but he cares about you and I can see that you're suffering by forcing yourself to choose me over him, let's break this up", of course he would, and that's for SUNOHARA, the guy he ridiculed and abused on the daily basis. Hell, Tomoya did something similar in Tomoyo's route and as much as I hated the prolonged moping at the end of that route, at least I could tell that was indeed Tomoya. TL;DR This route had the characters, especially Tomoya and Ryou, act completely out of character, it had the good ending reachable only by making completely incomprehensible choices, including forcing the player to make Tomoya f*ck up, and it featured so much lengthy melodramatic moping it's a miracle I actually read it without skipping to the end. Don't get me wrong, Kyou as a character is great and I do indeed love her synergy with (the real) Tomoya, but this story feels like the writers' modus operandi was "make her suffer, I don't care if it makes sense or takes too long" and that's just mean.
Whew, yeah that was excellent. Almost forgot about the guilt this route made me feel lmao. AND released on my bday, what a bonus! Thanks again for the content dude

I've first heard of Clannad when I finished Steins;Gate on my Vita and was thinking of trying some other visual novels. But ultimately decided to pass on this one, because I saw some mixed reviews on it. For some reason I thought it would be boring. I haven't watched a single video from you on Clannad at this point, this one included, but seeing how you praise it, I think I'll try the visual novel after all. Hope I won't get disappointed.
go for it! Aside from infrequent cryptic gameplay parts, it's a wonderful experience. But you played the Steins;Gate vn so I'm sure you're well acquainted with that already
Really love this video 👍 (Also have you heard of the visual novel Higurashi when they cry? It’s kinda popular in the visual novel community and the anime adaptation is also really good too!)
While its still my least favorite arc, I can somewhat see why this would ve someone favorite. Though if im being honest, its other worldy the timing of this video. As even though im a very stubborn person when it comes to keeping my promises and achieving my goals, I have come extremely close to quitting. I have spent the last several years working on a fan film i had to cut short, Which i have spent hundreds of hours thinking about, Writing, Animating, Editing and who knows what else. To have barely anything to show for it. I have lost a job due to chronic pain. And a lot more stuff thats happened that has made everything just that much harder. Yet no matter where I look, No matter who I talk to, Im always encouraged to carry on. Told by even a few im destined to do great things. That a wonderful future is just up ahead. And oddly enough, This video, Manages to say the same. As i push through some of my darkest times. Its really amazing how clannad just keeps on giving huh

Kyou's surname Fujibayashi means "wisteria" (藤) (fuji) and "forest" (林) (hayashi/bayashi) - so her surname and forest full of violet wisteria are one... briliant...
Can we please, get all the Hollywood staff "intimate" with a physicall copy of this Visual Novel please? So they stop producing BS and give us the stories we deserve?...
This is my second time watching this video
Happy to hear you liked it so much, thank you! Best of luck with finishing work lol
Kyou 🔥😋
& Botan 😇
The best duo
Puhi!
Really love this video 👍
(Also have you heard of the visual novel Higurashi when they cry? It’s kinda popular in the visual novel community and the anime adaptation is also really good too!)
Thank you! I have heard of Higurashi, I've also heard it's very dark. I want to get into it but I wasn't sure if the anime adaptation was any good
@@Totaraum The studio did a good job adapting the anime I’ll say (the dub version of it though, yeah not so much)
@@Issyboyy dubs are hit or miss, I usually don't watch them unless they're famous for being good
I'm glad I subscribed
4:95 I love Trash Taste but their opinions on CLANNAD are honestly hilarious. Especially when you learn that half of them haven't even watched it.
Even Joey who loves it says some things that I can’t agree with lol. That’s just the way opinions be though
perfect video, who is the next character for your video?
next up is gonna be misae and yukine
@@Totaraum nice i can't wait
I've changed my mind. I am now part of the purple eye gang 👁
All I've learned from this video is that we need to destroy the British Commonwealth for the crime of creating people with bad opinions about clannad.
forgive their crimes, for their accents are wonderful
@@Totaraum we can keep Wales and Scotland.
@@gilles4prezudent650 but Connor is from wales. Your logic is flawed, friend
@@Totaraum the landmasses will remain, nothing else.
@@gilles4prezudent650 oh
I'm sorry to hear all that. For what it's worth I agree with everyone you've spoken to thus far
I highly suggest giving Higurashi a try. The visual novel is a masterpiece and the lead male remind me a lot of a younger Tomoya.
I’ve heard a lot about that one, it’s on the list
oh, can we have a video on Botan? xD
"maybe some day"
-the magic conch
@@Totaraum you should make a 30-min video about the botan side story and nothing else
@@ryful_z3 I like this idea
why did this have to be posted when i have been up 16 hours....well 40 more minutes is perfectly fine by me then
oops, sorry for your sleep schedule
@@Totaraum its all good, It happens a lot
LETS GOOOOOOO!!!!
Funny how kyo gets mad for not being able to run over Tomoya in routes where you avoid the bike lol what did you think about that???
I thought it was really funny. I can't tell if she's serious or just messing with him, probably both
Lol epic steins gate joke
Is this a parody of the Death Battle channel or is this for real?
the first minute is a parody thing, the rest is new stuff
What happens if you give different answers to the two decivie questions? Do you can some lame non ending?
They both distance themselves from you
