    Thanks for getting right to the point. Most people want to talk about their flower beds as they walk past them and over to the trailer they're going to talk about. 20 minutes into the video they're finally talking brakes. Because of that, your forgiven for the peanut butter joke.

    When we bought our trailer, we informed the dealer that our tow vehicle was a Dodge Grand Caravan. Since we did not even know what a tow vehicle brake controller was and the dealer indicated that it was all good as we had a 7-pin connector, we towed our trailer a mere 300 miles and ended up chewing through half the minivan’s brake pads! Glad we have been educated by your and others’ videos, and upgraded our tow vehicle to a half ton pickup! 🙂

    You are so right about some trailers should have brakes. I have a utility that is 1400 empty and can carry almost 6000 pounds and no brakes. It gets fun and you need to be careful...very careful.

    Josh, I am new to the channel. I am saving my money to buy a travel trailer in the near future. Can you do a show with one of your Techs on hooking up a brake controller to a tow vehicle and the different types? I am learning a lot from you before I get into travel trailering.

    As stated in the comments, there is no catch all end all answer to the minimum weight for requiring brakes. It does depend on the state. Some go by empty weight, actual weight, and GVWR. Each state is different. Colorado, for example, requires brakes if the GVWR is 3k or more. Some when less then 3k require brakes if the trailer weight is equivalent to 40% or more of the towing vehicle. Always check your state to be sure. I will attach a link that will hopefully help show what your state requires. If the trailer is commercial, then FMCSA laws cover the weight requirements.

    Good info, now do a video about when weight distribution is needed, my understanding is if the trailer is a single axle you don`t need them and could overload the trailer axle but a sway bar is still handy regardless of how many axles.

    Thanks for the Trailer Brakin' 101 Professor Josh. Makes you wonder when disc brakes will start becoming more commonplace. Although, with how long trailers sit, maybe there would be too many issues with calipers seizing up.

      Montana is starting to offer them in their Legacy package. People who actually tow a lot will understand their value. I don't think you'll ever see them in the main market, but the "luxury" stuff may include them more in the future. Hard to say.
      Very few people truly understand and appreciate the benefit not only of superior braking but simple suspension upgrades like equa flex or mor/ryde. That's why we put these videos out.

    Your video quoted at what point its required to have brakes. But I'd also want to ask... at what point does it feel risky before you get to 2500 lbs? Do you feel this at 1,000? 1500? Or... something higher? And I guess that would depend on the type of vehicle pulling.

    Question for ya and I’ll try to keep it as short as I can
    Picking up a:
    15ft camper
    1840lb dry weight
    Has brakes
    Towing with
    17’ Tacoma Sport w/tow package
    6800lb
    Pre-wired for a brane controller
    The dealer I’m going to is offering a wireless Curt brake controller, but I don’t want that.
    Do you think I’ll be OK driving home without the brake controller?

    • @JoshtheRVNerd
      @JoshtheRVNerd  3 года назад

      So as a professional I need to advise that if the trailer has brakes, then you're legally required to be able to operate them with a brake controller
      That is my "Official" response.
      Unoffically and just spitting logic here -- a trailer of that weight isn't REQUIRED to have brakes. So there are technically heavier trailers out there without brakes being towed with vehicles like yours without issue.
      Again -- I have to 100% recommend you have some kind of brake controller, but I also know people legally haul more without.
      You'll have to make the call

    Josh:
    OK. So now I've got breaks on my trailer.
    It's the wide range of break controllers that becomes very confusing. Inexpensive to costly, Proportional controllers to timed controllers.
    I thought some time ago, you'd done a video on break controllers but I can't find it. Could you please put up the link or expand this break video to address how to evaluate and select a break controller that's best suited suited to a give class or classes of trailer>

    • @JoshtheRVNerd
      @JoshtheRVNerd  3 года назад

      The fact you're using kg indicates you're not from the states so please verify this with your local authorities. In the states that trailer would not require brakes but "needing" them is potentially another story as strange as it sounds
      If I had a vehicle rated for only about 3,500lbs of towing I'd still personally want the trailer to have brakes to assist with sudden stops at things like awkward red lights

      @@louish4420 In the US if a trailer weighs over 2,500lbs, then it's required to have brakes
      If it's less than 2,500lbs then brakes are optional
