I’m in South Easton PA and just picked up a GX 470 yesterday! So glad I found your video which was extremely well done brother! All I have to do is figure out how to connect my rear camera and I’ll be good to go!
This is great to hear!! I’m also a native Pennsylvanian...living in Florida now. I was up there in December when I made this video. Agreed, the rear camera is on my list of things to figure out. I’d like to put the aftermarket camera I buy in the same spot as the original one. Not sure if it’s possible, but I’m going to try.
@@Awesomoto you don't want to put a analog backup camera in there you want a ahd camera the first you have to do is go into your settings and change it from analog to ahd you might need a password but Phoenix should be able to provide it that radio is set up for a HD camera which the quality will blow away an analog camera
@@briandoss8552 Hey Brian! Thanks for reaching out with this info! I haven’t ordered the backup cam yet, so the timing of your comment was perfect. I originally planned on buying the Phoenix Automotive backup cam…is there one you recommend over that one? Thanks!
I know that they have the new HD cameras in 720p and 1020p but you're going to have to figure out where you're going to mount it you can get a license plate bracket or they make light lenses that replace the light cover that shine on the license plate that let you mount a camera to it

I’ve got a 2005 gx too. I’ve used it off road to places with no cell service and the satellite navigation will still show the Forrest roads. I would hate to loose that but I do like apple car play and the ability to use on x app

Hey man thanks for the video love it. I just recently got my gx470 an I was just shocked how much gas it consumes. Mine consume 1/4 of a tank for every 60 miles does that seam okay or 120 for every half tank. Lol I was driving a Prius before so this is new to me
Hey brother I just bought a GX470 and love the videos. The GX I bought had the same head unit but I can't for the life of me get android auto to pair up. Any suggestions since you have first hand experience?
Apologies for the delay. I used the Apple CarPlay for mine so I don't have experience with Android Auto. My first suggestion is to make sure the USB dongle is getting power from the headunit. That could be an issue.
@@Awesomoto All good man I appreciate the response. It's got power have tried both USB's and nothing. Even Phoenix was stumped. Sad thing is their customer service drops off once they realize it's an actual issue with the unit. I just finished the speaker upgrades and your videos were awesome especially with getting the EQ dialed in.
Oh man, I’m sorry to hear the customer service isn’t going well. I wonder if you can return the unit? I’m glad to hear the speakers videos helped though! I love that upgrade and it was very affordable.
Thanks for the video. I just bought an 05 with Nav and Mark Levinson packsge. Will be installing this unit. Is there a way to connect the video out to play with the stock DVD out screen?
Hey moto, great install video! Any chance of an update vid down the line so we can hear your thoughts and experience with the system as a daily driver? Also, have you played around with the native GPS functionality of the unit? I know carplay streaming is convenient for navigation in the city, but im wondering about GPS when cell coverage is nonexistant. Thanks!!
I haven’t messed around with the native GPS function, but it would be a good test. I’ll write down a follow up video on my video idea list. I have a few videos I’m in the works on, but can add this to the list. 🙏🏻 I appreciate the feedback and I think others would benefit from a follow-up review.
Really enjoy your videos. I just purchased a 2008 GX470 and looking forward to implementing some the mods you’ve done to your GX. I take it you still need the Apple Car Play Dongle even though your using the wireless app? Keep the vids coming, and I hope your channel sees exponential growth. Subscribed
Thanks Judd! I appreciate the positive feedback. 🙏🏻 Yes, unfortunately you still need the dongle for wireless CarPlay, but you can direct connect your phone usb to the back of the unit too.
I was wondering if you had a followup video detailing how you feel about the unit after having it for awhile. I' considering installing one in my 2007 gx470, but I've heard that there were a lot of bugs and that many people were unhappy with it. I'm assuming that the company has made efforts to address some of the concerns but I haven't seen much new info on the subject.
Hey Frank. I'm slacking and meant to make an update video awhile back to detail some of the "bugs". After 2 years of this radio installed, I still prefer having it over the factory system.
@@Awesomotothanks for that reply, but I agree there is a lot of talk about how some folks are saying to avoid it. Having a good understanding of its short comings would be great. I think it does look better even if it’s slow or has a bug or two. But I’d love to hear a bit more in depth if your up for it! 😂
We just bought a 2005 GX and love it. The stock stereo does make the vehicle feel dated. Really wanna upgrade to this head unit but have questions about the backup camera. Wonder if Phoenix has an after market one you could add on ?
Hey, thanks for reaching out. Welcome to the GX family! Glad you're liking the vehicle too. To answer your question, yes Phoenix has an after market backup cam that I intend on installing sometime over the summer. When I do I'll post a video of it with the details. Here is the link to the camera. phoenixautomotiveinc.com/products/universal-backup-camera-reverse-camera-rear-view-ccd-camera
Great vid. I was wondering if this would work with a stock navi ml unit. Super good to know. I dont own a gx yet but its a future plan. Frankly all lexus nav sucks compared to my iphone so this is a huge upgrade. Subbed
Nice vid! If you did it again, would you go with this unit or one of the others? This looks like the easiest for dealing with the integrated A/C control issue.
Great question Michael! Yes, I'd do it again if I had the choice. It's served it's purpose well for me. All of them have their quirks, but I do like this platform best.
I recently purchased a gx with the Tesla screen, every time I try to change the ac settings it asks for the password. I asked the previous owner if they knew the password and they don’t. Any way I could override the password?
Great question. I've had to do this before and I didnt know the password. There are some forums with the default password and there are a few based on how old the unit is. Hopefully this link works, but here they list various passwords. Let me know if this works for you. phoenixandroidradioforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=17
Thanks Riaz! 🙏🏻 I personally don’t played videos often, but I think they disable while in gear. There should be a setting to disable that safety feature.
Love your videos. I’ve shared with several GX buddies here in Texas. I’m definitely getting a Phoenix. Also, where can I get a LRD sticker? Love that too.
Hey Javier! Thanks for reaching out, giving kind compliments, and sharing my videos! I truly appreciate your feedback! It’s great to hear from the GX community! I bought this sticker from Cruiser Gear. cruisergear.co/products/lrd-lexus-racing-development-decal-1
I want to say this very well Edited video with some 80s Vibes , edm and thank you so much for the GX470 videos really appreciate everything. By the way would this Headunit interfered or work the with back TV screen?
Sorry for the delay in answering your question. I think it would interfere and may have issues with the back TV screen. I suggest contacting Phoenix customer support as other subscribers have told me they're easy to work with and get back to you with answers promptly.
About to order the Phoenix head unit. Why do they ask for your vehicle info? Vehicle information and Dash photo submission To make sure we can process your order in a timely manner, please provide as much information as possible about your vehicle and upload dash photo showing original (OEM) radio and/or A/C control panel. This seems a little strange.
Yeah they asked for this a year ago when I bought. They just want to make sure the year and want to verify nav/non nav with dash photo. They don’t ask for anything personal such as VIN. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions.
Good question. It has it’s flaws, like slight lag with Bluetooth and interaction menus, but I think the benefits of CarPlay and a modern touchscreen outweigh those flaws. I think I’m going to remove the Bluetooth dongle and plug direct usb for CarPlay. I hear that gets rid of the lag.
Do you recommend a screen protector to help with the glare on the screen, if there is any? Thanks! Really enjoy your videos! I have a 2007 GX470. Getting ready to paint the grill matte black, but cover the Lexus emblem with painters tape.
Hey swebstar, I don't have problems with glare, but I have my windows tinted and that may reduce it. If you have issues with glare you can get a 10.5" anti-glare screen protector on Amazon cheap. Thank you, I'm glad you enjoy the videos! Painting the grille matte black makes it look much better...I think you'll like the results!
Sorry for the delay Cade. I believe this unit is compatible for non-nav GXs as well. If you follow the link in the description it mentioned when you order you need to send them details about the unit in your vehicle so they send you the proper harness and control module.
Hey Chris! Definitely still recommend as the screen is bigger than the other options out there. The interface could use bigger buttons for the AC controls, but that can be fixed with a firmware update from a guy on the GXOR facebook group who created a nice improvement on the radio.
What a great vid and explanations ! Silly question coming... why do you need apple car play since there is presumably playstore and you can install any app ?
Great question Emmanuel! You could install apps on the playstore and do it all natively, I just prefer the User Interface (UI) for Apple Carplay so that was my main reason for it.
Great video! I see a lot of comments about the backup camera. Does this unit disable the factory backup camera? Backup camera is very important and will be a deal breaker.
Yes, it isn't compatible with the stock backup camera since it uses a different voltage level. BUT...what you can do is just replace the stock backup cam with a more modern one from Phoenix Automotive and it should have better clarity than the 15 ish year old one in our vehicles. I plan to re-wire a new backup camera in my vehicle and will document the steps so people can do it themselves.
Good question! It’s still holding up great and there are a few quirky things with the button styles that I wish were different, but it’s still performing well all these years. There is a guy on Facebook who makes a software upgrade for these to make the user interface a little nicer so I think I’m going to give that a try. I’ll certainly make a video when I get that software.
Awesome! Thanks for the update. Instills confidence in me purchasing this unit down the road. Side note i am new to your channel and you earned yourself a subscriber! 👍
Yes, I found that the setting for the amplifier was set to off and caused my sound to have no depth to it. Check the video @20:25, I talk about this issue and how to check to make sure your amp is turned on.
I am looking to do this now to my GX, however I like to know after 3 years did you have any issus with it? and thanks for all your great work you doing
I'm still enjoying this unit and I would still recommend. The Apple CarPlay makes it for me. The built in user interface isnt the most ideal layout or modern look, but once the Apple CarPlay or Android Auto kicks in, then you get the nicer user interface.
wow great video, i have a question, my SUV 2008 GX, i have installed all as i know, but why is the reverse camera not working, and the 6 change CD is also not working, what did i do wrong thanks
The reverse camera is unfortunately not compatible with their unit as the factory camera runs off a different voltage. I just uploaded a new video with details on installing a new backup camera. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/7UJl6RHDzRo/видео.html I haven’t tried out my disc changer as I use the Apple CarPlay and play music from my phone.
Oh no! Make sure you check all your connections and that you are using the correct harnesses. Also check your audio levels in the settings to make sure the level is set properly on the main sound setting.
Hey Dr.Somil, good question. Yes, in my case I use CarPlay, so I really don't benefit from the antenna. If you wanted to use the navigation built into the Pheonix Automotive head unit, then that's where it would come into play. I doubt I'll ever need it, but I hooked it up anyway.
It's not the greatest. It's a little clunky and lags a bit and the buttons to control are small. The defogger and recirculate functions do work though.
Hi Very informative videos you are doing. Are you still using this unit. How does it responds with climate control air conditioning etc. I heard it is very slow. How is the sound quality. Thanks
Hey Rizwan, sorry for the delayed response. The climate controls are slightly slow and I wish the user interface was designed differently. The sound quality is great though!
Hey there, Love the channel and your detailed approach to content. It’s great!!! Did you ever figure out how to change the Home Screen wallpaper. Not the car image during boot but the one that like a cityscape on the main Home Screen? Thanks!
Hey Wood Booger! Good question and I’m glad you commented about this. It’s something I really want to change as I can’t stand the preloaded background. I’ll tinker around with this and figure out how to change it and keep you posted on how to do it. Thanks for reaching out! 🙏🏻
I did the PX6 install over the holidays as well. I’m struggling with some settings issues and random crash/rebooting. My unit came with zLink app for connecting to CarPlay. I’m thinking I may try the app you’re using to see if it helps. Also notice the Bluetooth phone call lags sometimes... not every time. Might consider using a usb direct connection instead of Bluetooth to see if it helps. Was wondering how you changed your CarPlay Home Screen display layout ? (mine is different)
Nice! Glad to hear you also installed this unit. I agree abs think you should go with the other app. That zlink app was buggy for me too. I plan to try out direct usb plug-in for Apple CarPlay and see how that helps. For changing the layout, there is a little icon in the CarPlay at the bottom left you can click on and change the layout. Hope this helps! Feel free to reach out on Instagram if you have more questions or need help troubleshooting anything.
Hi - Does this Phoenix radio work with any other amp for the GX470 besides the Mark Levinson amp that comes with the SUV? My ML amp is shot and would rather buy a different amp rather than spend $400 to get the ML amp fixed. If you could suggest other amps that works with this Phoenix amp that I can use with GX470 I would appreciate it. I'm ok to change out the speakers as well but would not want to change out the entire wiring system. Thanks
Hey, thanks for reaching out. Great question. I do know that this head unit would generically work for an aftermarket amp. The harder question for me to answer would be what that aftermarket amp would look like. Off the top of my head I don't know all the specs on the ML system amplifier, so I would need to find info on that and see how many channels and what power it's capable of. The biggest problem with replacing the ML system is the 8 ohm impedance which I talk about in the video. Like you said, if you change out all the speakers and replace the amp, you could make that work.
Great stuff as always bro!! my head unit just stopped working and i had the amp checked and it fine. everything lights up but no sound. in the market for one of these. how is it working for you after two years?
It's working well for me an I mainly only use this radio for the Apple CarPlay feature. I'm working on doing some more customizations on this tablet and will be releasing some free to download themes for the interface on Awesomoto.tv when I get everything finalized. I'd still recommend this unit for someone in the market for an aftermarket radio in their GX.
@@Awesomoto I’ve been in the site today and it says it has built in Apple CarPlay. I know this video is 2 years old but do you know if that means a dongle is no longer required?
The set up is clean. I really like it. I've watched other videos on other channels with the dongles hanging out of the sides. I can't have dongles hanging out like those other videos and plugging my phone in everytime I get in the car, that is a mess and it's not for me. It's good to see a review about the carplay using BT. I like that you mentioned the mic on the outside. Others mentioned the plug in mic and where to set up, but why would you need that if it is right there next to you. No one has mentioned that. You mention a good point about the lag, is it the 4RAM, is it the USB? If I buy one know, I guarantee they will come out with a 8RAM in a month. I have a 2008 Gx 470 Sport, I'm in SoCal and Phoenix down the road, it's even more tempting to drive over. Maybe I didn't notice before, but I really like the siriusXM kit where the useless dash ash tray is. Does that still run thru the new head unit? If so, how did that plug in to the new head unit? For the short term, I'd like to get that. That looks clean, I like it sits below the tape player. Did you install that? If I did get this, I'd like to get the OBD wifi reader. For some reason, I'd like to see my TPMS on screen. Any issues with the backup camera? Phoenix also has that 360 camera, how would that install? Could it be clean?
I definitely plan on installing the 360 camera from Phoenix and plan to do a video of that. That OBD scanner would be really nice to have! The SiriusXM is wired in directly through the aux input. This was spliced in with some relays behind the dash and a switch by the previous owner. I really liked how they set it up, so I kept it.
Hello I purchase the same unit you did but I didn't receive the harness from con bus decoder to the unit or the one they sont me didn't match the unit I was wondering what could be done to get the unit to work. I have no sounds or control over ac unit
I keep kicking this can down the road, but I really need to do an updated extended use review on this. One issue that may be a no deal for some is that the audio delay from the apple carplay dongle or the lag in the computing power of the tablet causes a delay in the audio during phone calls and renders it basically useless. My plan is to try and get to the bottom of this (maybe a different carplay dongle) and see if I can find a solution. In addition I want just talk about pros/cons as well.
I keep checking your videos to see if you have posted an update of your experience with this unit. Hope you find the time soon to do it. I use your videos Thank you!!
I just subscribed bc you have all the upgrades I’ve wanted to do to my GX… Question did you have any issues with AC controls ON the screen itself? Thanks 😊
Is there a better Apple CarPlay device that might work better with the head unit? Is wired or wireless a better option on the lag issue? Thanks for the info
That's a good question. I havent been able to confirm if others will work with this unit. I see a ton of different models on Amazon, but not sure if they'd work...or work any better.
Great question! Unfortunately, it doesnt work as the voltages are different levels for the screen vs. OEM camera. I did a video on installing an after market camera to the head unit and it works great.
One question about the green harness connector that has the 2004 and radio number on it. Where does that plug in? I haven't seen where that is yet. Great video by the way!
Thanks danotiger3! It should plug into the back of the unit. Hopefully you were able to figure this out…sorry for the delay in responding. Let me know if you still need help.
I found where it plugs into the back of the radio, I do not know however where it plugs into the main dash. Is there anyway you could show me a clip or video of something to where you plug yours in?
@@danotiger3 Hey, thanks for the update glad you found the first location on the wire and now the other side should plug into one of the large white plastic harnesses in your dash. At 11:15 you can see me plug the harness into the head unit and if you pause at 11:25 and look at the wires hanging out of the dash, it mounts to one of those larger connectors. These cables are keyed so that you can't plug them into the wrong connector, so if you find one that fits...that's the one. Let me know if you still struggle to find it. You can message me on Instagram(Awesomoto) if that's easier. Hope this helps.
@@Awesomotoat 15:58 in the video it looks like you plugged the green harness into something on the dash. That is what I can't seem to find on my GX. I can't see what you plugged it into and I'm not sure if I tucked it away or I don't have the same configuration. I can't get Pheonix to answer the emails yet. It's been over a week. Anyway, thank you for the help so far. I can message you on Insta next time if need be. I just thought it would be easier on here for video reference. Have a good day.
I just discovered this upgrade yesterday. I'm impressed! Thanks for the detailed install/review. How does the audio sound quality compare to the Mark Levinson system? I'm very impressed with the audio quality in my 07 GX470 and I'd hate to lose sound quality. You mentioned adjusting the stock amp is recommended but you were able to work with the stock amp settings. Is there a web link that explains this? Are there adjustment knobs hidden somewhere? Does it work with the glove box DVD changer? Can it feed video to the rear DVD unit or does the rear unit have to work on its own after installing? My buddies 100% stock 07 GX470 can feed the front DVDs to the rear DVD but for some reason when I try to do this with my 07 GX470 I get a blank rear screen saying "no video" so somewhere the signal isn't getting through (sound does come out through the wireless headphones so the audio appears to be working). Right now I have an issue where I need to sync a new set of TPS sensors with the car without being able to take it to the dealer. If the OBD dongle is added, can you reset the TPS sensors through this head unit? I wonder, can you tweak other OBD controlled features like automatically turning the side mirrors down in reverse, enabling/disabling the auto alarm on feature, configuring separate keys to automatically move the seating position/mirrors, etc or do you still have to go to the Lexus dealer for this? Did you ever try the 2nd mic? I wonder if adding it enables better microphone performance by actively cancelling background noise or something? I apologize for all of the questions. This looks like a great upgrade and I'm glad I found your channel. I hope your rearview or 360° camera install goes well. I haven't looked into this yet but one way or another I want to keep or possibly upgrade the rearview camera.
I had this headunit for about 8 months and although it looks good it is very slow. The interface is frustrating. I ended up giving it away and bought a gta car kit bluetooth adapter and replace my cassette drive with a ram mount to mount a tablet. I had a tablet with lte and it is way better.
Hi. I bought the same unit for my 2003 GX but the climate controls connectors did not fit. Also, do you have to put the side brackets into the new unit? Or the new unit stays put just with the push in clips?
Thanks for the complements! Unfortunately, it doesn’t have USB-C, but it does have Type A ports on the back that I believe are USB 2.0. You can use to connect any iPhone or Android.
Did you have any issue with your ashtray and vent trim not fitting into the provisions properly? I just installed my unit today and no matter what I've tried, the damn ashtray won't mount to the provisions in the dash, therefore leaving a gap at the bottom of the vent trim. Lmk, thanks.
I’ve taken this dash apart many times now and occasionally I have that issue, but it’s normally because I have the wires tucked up behind the unit causing it to stick out. If you move them out of the way it should sit flush for you.
@@Awesomoto thanks for the reply, I figured it out. It was the metal bracket used to hold the old stack together. I didn't realize I wasn't supposed to reuse it on the new unit and spent an hour fighting with it. I popped that bit off and it slid into place perfectly with no binding or rattles... I'm just dumb lol
@@cnknguyen Hey man, that’s just the stuff we all go through when installing something new…you’re not dumb…you figured it out and now you know how it works! That’s the best part of DIY projects. Glad you figured it out!
Did you replace the backup camera? If so is there's a video? What leather kit did you use to reupholster your seats? Thank you for any of the info you share.
Hey Robert, thanks for reaching out! I still plan on replacing the backup cam with the Phoenix Automotive one. I should probably move that one higher up in priority. I ordered the RRW leather seat kit, but it’s no longer on their website and I’m not sure why they removed the product. I love mine and it was a big improvement to the interior.
Thanks for the great video. I’m interested in the satellite radio install. Can the head unit support sirus-xm? Or do you need the xtra unit I see you have? Thanks again.
I'm not sure about SiriusXM for this. There were two antenna's I connected in this video...one for GPS and the other is for WiFi. Here is some verbiage from the Pheonix website describing options for SiriusXM. Hope this helps. "Most features from the factory, like steering wheel control, backup camera, Bluetooth phone calls, etc, are retained. For many Chevy, GMC, Cadillac, Infiniti, and Ford vehicles, the OEM UI may also be displayed and controlled on the head unit screen, thus retaining almost all factory features, including SXM radio, OnStar® and SYNC®. However, currently, without additional module(s) most other Android head units may not have SXM radio. SiriusXM Commander Touch™ may be used to get satellite radio; alternatively, Sirius app for Android may be used with Internet connection. iDatalink Maestro ADS-MRR Interface Module may be used to retain SYNC®, OnStar®, Uconnect®, etc. Voice control can also be realized with Google Voice Search. We have yet to map a steering wheel switch to activate the feature. Sometimes, factory AUX input is also lost."
I guess im randomly asking but does any of you know a method to log back into an Instagram account? I stupidly lost my login password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me.
@Immanuel Kason i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and Im in the hacking process now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Just got this unit but not from phoenix. Did you have to download/install some special launcher to get the interface to look like that or is it like that already with just the autokit carplay? I ordered mine with carplay apparently built in and there's a wire attached to the back labeled carplay with a female USB so I'm not sure if I still need to purchase the dongle or not and was wondering if you had the same situation. Thank you in advanced! Love all your content.
Hey Matt, sorry for the delay. The Phoenix head unit Interface came like that. If you have CarPlay built in, I assume you won’t need the extra dongle I had to use. I’m sure your unit has extra USB in case you want to connect external wired devices or flash drives for SW updates.
I've been looking at these phoenix units for a while now. How's the screen visibility with regards to glare and viewing angle? If you covered this in the video, please forgive. I didn't watch the whole thing through as I've seen a bunch of videos on this unit. However, I don't recall any of them critiquing screen visibility.
Nothing special and wiring is very straight forward. If I had to say something is to make sure of the 3 harnesses provided make sure you just select the one that matches your vehicle year. It's clearly labeled on the harness, so you shouldnt have issues.
Is this Phoenix head unit the only option ??...what about speakers?? A couple of mine are blown & it sounds terrible ! I have the Marc Levinson system with like 12 or 13 speakers..can I just add/ swap Amp & add 6 or 7 new speakers in factory locations ??
Hey Brian, there are a few options including a Grom unit people are using. For speakers in the car they’re all at 8 ohms. If you go after market amp, I suggest replacing all speakers with 4 ohms. If you stay with ML amp, make sure you buy 8 ohm speakers. I have 2 videos on my channel for speaker info.
Ive just installed similar screen bought from phoenix automotive but my ac doesn’t work. And to get help its impossible to reach phoenix auto via phone 😢
I need to look into this Octa-core. I assume that has a faster processor and is a newer model, which in that case would be a huge upgrade! Whelp, that was correct after looking...it has an 8-core processor and will be a better performing unit all around. I'd go for that model if I were you.
Did your stock head unit have integrated GPS? I'm trying to determine if the included GPS antenna must be used, or if there might be a factory GPS antenna somewhere on the car that could be reconnected during the install process. I appreciate your video, very well done.
The Nav unit variant of the GX470 should have a gps antenna built in that might need to be re-wired to the right connector. I just went with the aftermarket one as it was right there and easy to work with. Thanks for reaching out! Let me know if you end up wiring up the factory antenna.
Did you have any leftover factory connections? I'm in the middle of installing now and have 2-3 just want to make sure I'm not missing something. Its an 03 so I'm using the correct connector for that year.
Hey Samuel! Yes, there should be a total of 3 connectors for the different year variants. So there will be 2 spare. With regard to the factory ones in the dash...all those connectors should have a mating connector and there shouldn't be any leftovers.
Great video. I just installed this exact model in my 05 Prado. Did you ever figure out how to change the background screen. I see you can scroll between 4 of them. Do you know if you can change the themes all together?
Thank you! Hopefully the install went smooth and the video helped you out! I honestly haven't messed around with the background screen since installing it. I should probably figure that out, because I'm sick of looking at the stock one that's on there...its very basic. If I figure it out, I'll let you know how I did it.
Excellent video! It really helped me out a lot with my install. Did you have any issues with your climate settings? I can’t seem to adjust the temp on mine.
Thanks Tim! 🙏🏻 I did not have issues with my climate control, so if you are, I’d make sure you plugged in the CAN bus module that came with the head unit. Hope this helps.
@@Awesomoto thanks so much for the response. I just pulled the unit and double checked that connection and now everything is working properly. Thank you!!
This may be a dumb question as I’m a noob, but what is the GPS used for? Is it for satellite maps when out of cell service or is it for something else? Thanks, love your vids.
There are no dumb questions on this channel! Yep you got it, the GPS can be used for maps when out of cell service. I honestly havent used this feature since owning the head unit.
This was a great video thanks for being so detailed with it, can you tell me exactly what I would purchase from Phoenix automotive. I would be choosing to use AppleCarplay so is there a specific type of dongle? Also, and probably more importantly, if I have asked 6 folks, it has been right down the middle meaning 3 have said great, 3 have said glitchy based on firmware. What are your thoughts on the glitchy factor with the unit? Again, great video!
I’m so sorry for the delayed response…this week has been hectic! The newer Phoenix units look like they have Apple CarPlay built in so I don’t think you’ll need the dongle I had. The links to everything I bought are in the description. Also, good question about the firmware. It has its faults and isn’t the cleanest user interface, but I still prefer it over the stock head unit. I saw there’s a guy on Facebook who does a custom firmware you can buy for these for $100. Looks clean and if I go that route, I’ll post a video.
It does not bypass the amp, thankfully. The quality of the setup I’d say is an 8.5/10…my only gripe is that the user interface is not as clean looking as I’d like.
I checked my wiring harness and can't find a "back view timeline" wire. Do you have the same model that I used for the install? Wondering if they changed the labels in some of the newer units.
Yes, still functions well for me. I wish there was a little better user interface for the AC controls. They are small buttons and its a bit challenging to hit them accurately while driving.
Hey Garrett! Oh that’s odd…I haven’t encounter that issue. It sticks going down this path, but I’d reach out to Phoenix technical support. They’re pretty responsive and might give you factory reboot directions to clear it. Hope this helps. Happy New Year!
Hi There, mine was just installed and I really like it, but the sound quality is lacking. Doesn’t seem to get loud enough. What volume level did you set the stock unit before you took it out? And also, if I want to plug the stock unit in to reset the volume, do I need to unplug everything, or just the main few connectors?
Hey Chris! Thanks for reaching out. I noticed you put a comment on vlog30 with a similar questions. Here was my response to that in case you missed the response on that video..."I believe I set the volume to 40 before removing the original head unit. I'm pretty sure you can go under the "User Settings" and adjust that volume level so you don't have to go back to the original unit just to change it. There is also a setting for enable and disable of the amplifier and if that is not selected, the sound will be poor as well. Check those two settings and see if you have any luck. Reach out if you still have problems and I can help debug it with you."
@@Awesomoto Yeah, sorry for asking on two vids. I tried to delete the other comment but for some reason my iPad won’t let me, so I responded to you over there too. More information for users is better anyway, right! Your advice to turn on and adjust the amp in “console” settings is AMAZING! Worked like a charm. There is a LOT of information out there telling people to remove the unit, install the old one, turn up the volume, then put the new one back in. Your video is the ONLY place I found with the console advice, and it worked like a charm. THANK YOU!
I installed this in 2006 gx470 and used the 60121adapter but also have the oem mate for the 2007-60270 adapter hanging loose with no where to connect it. Was this the case with your install? I am having an issue with the volume staying consistent...sometimes boots up very loud
@@Awesomoto Thanks for the reply...Everything works but I have the one OEM adapter with no where to plug it in. It mates up to the 60270 adapter that came with the Px6 but I already used the 60121and they would need to plug in to the same place....Your video was overall a great help really enjoyed it.
Great question log1957. The amp in your GX is doing all the work so you won’t have any issues with sound. There are some differences in the output drive based on each head unit, but you shouldn’t have any issues with sounds quality degradation. The nice thing about this unit is that it has pretty extensive sound mixing control to tune your audio for the sound you prefer.
@@Awesomoto awesome thank you very much. They hit very very hard and did not want to take that away!!!! Love your videos, they have really helped me out on what I want to do to my GX!
LMAO, you are so right man. This whole RUclips and filming thing has been a learning process...watching some of these older videos makes me cringe lol. I'm sorry you had to sit through this.
What all features do you lose? I have the upgraded entertainment with 6 DVD changer. (Don't misunderstand i dont have the CD changer i have the factory 6 disc DVD player that plays video on the dash too. Do I lose that function, and do I lose the factory mic function
I have the DVD changer as well and I personally havent tried using it since (or ever). Other than that, you don't lose any of the other functions. It uses a built in microphone on the front of the unit and it also has the option to plug in a secondary mic they provide.
@Awesomoto sadly, I looked into it, contacting the company, and I lost more function than I gained. A dash mounted carplay screen ran through the aux port keeps all factory function, and I get all Phoenix function for hundreds less.
Yes, I'm still liking the Phoenix. It certainly has some cons, but I think the list is short. It's a little slow to boot and the buttons for the AC controls could be bigger. Other than that I love the Apple CarPlay.
Thanks bro! I appreciate your comprehensive information about this unit. So helpful
Thank you for watching me ramble. I'm glad it answered your questions!
This Chanel is awesome!!!
Thanks Dude!

Thanks for reaching out with this info! I haven’t ordered the backup cam yet, so the timing of your comment was perfect. I originally planned on buying the Phoenix Automotive backup cam…is there one you recommend over that one?

I know that they have the new HD cameras in 720p and 1020p but you're going to have to figure out where you're going to mount it you can get a license plate bracket or they make light lenses that replace the light cover that shine on the license plate that let you mount a camera to it

You could have mounted the GPS antennae behind the unit under the dash with no issues.

Does the factory back up camera work with it?
Unfortunately, no. I made a second video after this documenting the install of a cheap Amazon camera which I still love to this day.
Wow!!! Amazing!
Hey man thanks for the video love it. I just recently got my gx470 an I was just shocked how much gas it consumes. Mine consume 1/4 of a tank for every 60 miles does that seam okay or 120 for every half tank. Lol I was driving a Prius before so this is new to me
Yeah these things are thirsty lol. I’m getting around 13-15mpg on average.
Of course Jose! Thank you for reaching out. I haven not attempted the DVD screen connection as my GX doesnt have this feature.
@@Awesomoto Thanks for the quick reply! I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts and insights!
Yes, unfortunately you still need the dongle for wireless CarPlay, but you can direct connect your phone usb to the back of the unit too.

Thank you! Yes, the iphone is just a much better interface and was a big upgrade to have.

Will my 6 CD changer become a paperweight with this install? Enjoying your videos. Thanks for making them.
Unfortunately, I believe it becomes a paperweight 😔
I use my phone for music so haven’t looked back since swapping.
So the DVD player also becomes a paperweight?
About to order the Phoenix head unit. Why do they ask for your vehicle info?
Vehicle information and Dash photo submission
To make sure we can process your order in a timely manner, please provide as much information as possible about your vehicle and upload dash photo showing original (OEM) radio and/or A/C control panel.
This seems a little strange.
Yeah they asked for this a year ago when I bought. They just want to make sure the year and want to verify nav/non nav with dash photo. They don’t ask for anything personal such as VIN. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions.
Did you encounter any issues with the AC display function?
No, thankfully the CAN bus module worked for me and I have full AC display and function.
Just wondering what your thoughts are now that you have had the Phoenix for a while? Any thing you would do differently? Thanks in advance
I was wondering if you knew if the non navigation version of the gx is compatible with this system
Sorry for the delay Cade. I believe this unit is compatible for non-nav GXs as well. If you follow the link in the description it mentioned when you order you need to send them details about the unit in your vehicle so they send you the proper harness and control module.
Checking in to get an update on the Phoenix Automotive Head Unit Install. I know it been several years. Do you still recommend it.
Thanks for the video. Do you know if the unit has wireless Android Auto?
@@aarondavis1096 Of course! Thank you for reaching out. That I’m haven’t tested, but I believe it supports both CarPlay and Android Auto.
Any update on how well this head unit held up after 3 years? Curious on the longevity

Unfortunately these seat covers are no longer made. I did an install around the time of this video and they discontinued after a few months. ☹️
Hi, I have the problem everting it’s work but don’t have sound 😰😰
Oh no! Make sure you check all your connections and that you are using the correct harnesses. Also check your audio levels in the settings to make sure the level is set properly on the main sound setting.
Great video! What is the need for the GPS dongle? Arent you just getting GPS from your phone via Carplay for Google Maps?
Hey Dr.Somil, good question.
Yes, in my case I use CarPlay, so I really don't benefit from the antenna. If you wanted to use the navigation built into the Pheonix Automotive head unit, then that's where it would come into play. I doubt I'll ever need it, but I hooked it up anyway.
@@Awesomoto Thanks for the info! Ordering my unit right now
I bought a different brand unit, how does this unti do controlling the climate features like defogger and recirculate air?
It's not the greatest. It's a little clunky and lags a bit and the buttons to control are small. The defogger and recirculate functions do work though.
Hi
Very informative videos you are doing.
Are you still using this unit. How does it responds with climate control air conditioning etc. I heard it is very slow. How is the sound quality.

You should reach out to Phoenix customer support and let them know what you’re missing. That is the only way to get things back working.
Underneath the tesla screen there is an other device, what is it? 😊
That was an old XM Radio the previous owner had installed. I’ve since removed and put an Auxbeam controller in its place.
Love the videos! Are you pleased with the internal microphone? Did you enhance the radio antennas am/fm?
Thanks 😊
Thanks CyRille! I appreciate you subscribing! 🙏🏻 I haven’t had issues with the AC controls yet. What type of issue are you experiencing?
Is there a better Apple CarPlay device that might work better with the head unit? Is wired or wireless a better option on the lag issue? Thanks for the info
That's a good question. I havent been able to confirm if others will work with this unit. I see a ton of different models on Amazon, but not sure if they'd work...or work any better.
Question? Does the screen work for back up camera ? Or is there another installation required ?
Great question! Unfortunately, it doesnt work as the voltages are different levels for the screen vs. OEM camera. I did a video on installing an after market camera to the head unit and it works great.
One question about the green harness connector that has the 2004 and radio number on it. Where does that plug in? I haven't seen where that is yet. Great video by the way!

@@Awesomoto I will check on this today! Thank you and I will keep you posted.

How did you wire up your Sirius XM receiver? Tackling the job this week...
I actually never wired the Sirius receiver back up and have since removed it for a switch panel in the location it was in.
@@Awesomoto thanks
Any possible way you can assist me with some of the selections that need to be made for the ac controls to work. Thanks in advanced
Sure! What is the problem you are running in to?
@@Awesomoto can’t control temperature for some reason on the AC
I’m doing the skar and ds18 speaker upgrade this weekend. Should I be able to hear a noticeable difference running the stock head unit?
Hi. I bought the same unit for my 2003 GX but the climate controls connectors did not fit. Also, do you have to put the side brackets into the new unit? Or the new unit stays put just with the push in clips?
I did not transfer over the brackets to the new unit and it holds itself in with the clips.
Great content and review! I’m looking at this unit. Does it have a USB USB-C connection? I’m interested in streaming and charging my iPhone. Thanks!!
Glad you figured it out!
dose this have a backup camera or the ability to add one later?
Sure does! I made a video about adding a backup camera too!
@Gus Anson Instablaster =)
@Immanuel Kason i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and Im in the hacking process now.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
@Immanuel Kason It did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thanks so much you really help me out !
@@Awesomoto perfect thank you!
Hey Shawn! Visibility is good as this screen is recessed a bit from the frame around it. I haven’t dealt with any visibility issues.
Were you able to upgrade the stock backup camera with this new unit ?
Hey Brandon! Yes, I was able to and did that in another vlog.
Hey , I’m looking to add this same unit to my 2004 GX 470 with the ML Navigation. Anything special I need to look for when installing?
What is that thing you have mounted at 0:26 below the head unit to the drivers siide?
It’s a seriusXM satellite radio.
Did the back up camera still worked with this product?
No I had to create another video for installing an aftermarket backup camera...the install was very easy though.
Ive just installed similar screen bought from phoenix automotive but my ac doesn’t work. And to get help its impossible to reach phoenix auto via phone 😢
Oh no, are you still having issues with this or have you been able to fix?
What's the difference between the PX6 and G6 octa-core? I see most people getting the PX6 version, which is hard to find.
Do you do any installs for potential GX470 upgrades?
Hey Darwin, yes check out my main RUclips channel which covers a ton of different upgrades I've done over the years.
Thanks Tim! 🙏🏻
I did not have issues with my climate control, so if you are, I’d make sure you plugged in the CAN bus module that came with the head unit. Hope this helps.
@@Awesomoto thanks so much for the response. I just pulled the unit and double checked that connection and now everything is working properly. Thank you!!
@@johnstontimothy901 glad to hear it! 🥳
Can you hook up a front camera to it?
You can hook up the backup camera, but I'm not 100% sure about an additional camera for the front.
@@Awesomoto please keep the forum posted on if you do I am sure a lot of folks would appreciate it. Name of guy on Facebook with the custom firmware?
Does this bypass the Mark Levinson amplifier? How good is the quality of the setup? Is there any problems with the setup?
It does not bypass the amp, thankfully. The quality of the setup I’d say is an 8.5/10…my only gripe is that the user interface is not as clean looking as I’d like.
DO you have to use the Dongle or can you Apple CarPlay with the wireless dongle or can you use usb?
Pretty sure you would need the Dongle. I don't think it works natively without.
Does your gx have the mark levinson premium audio system? Is this compatible with the premium audio system?
Yes, this is specific for the Mark Levinson audio package as they are 8 ohm speakers.
Where does this “back view timeline” connect to?
I checked my wiring harness and can't find a "back view timeline" wire. Do you have the same model that I used for the install? Wondering if they changed the labels in some of the newer units.
This radio don’t have a on/off power button ?
Unfortunately, it does not have a external power button and is powered from the vehicle power at startup and then always on from there.
Is it still functioning well? I'm thinking about gettine one.
Yes, still functions well for me. I wish there was a little better user interface for the AC controls. They are small buttons and its a bit challenging to hit them accurately while driving.
I have this radio in my 06 gx470. When I first get In my car In the morning it takes 10-15 minutes to boot up. Any ideas on how to fix this ?
Hey Garrett! Oh that’s odd…I haven’t encounter that issue. It sticks going down this path, but I’d reach out to Phoenix technical support. They’re pretty responsive and might give you factory reboot directions to clear it. Hope this helps. Happy New Year!
Hi ,I was haven 2007 Lexus GX 470 I am going to Upgrade to head unit , what are you recommend the unit to install thank you
I recommend this Phoenix Automotive unit. The link is in the video description.
Hmmm, that seems odd. I would double check all adapters and also make sure a plug from the dash didnt fall back in that you are missing.
@@Awesomoto Thanks for the reply...Everything works but I have the one OEM adapter with no where to plug it in. It mates up to the 60270 adapter that came with the Px6 but I already used the 60121and they would need to plug in to the same place....Your video was overall a great help really enjoyed it.
did you replace the backup camera?
Hey Paul, sorry for the delay. Yes, replaced the backup camera and documented that process in Vlog 38 (ruclips.net/video/7UJl6RHDzRo/видео.html)
Hey man! I have 2 12inch alpine type s subs in my gx. If I do purchase this head unit will it affect the sound and bass or how should I go about that?
Great question log1957. The amp in your GX is doing all the work so you won’t have any issues with sound. There are some differences in the output drive based on each head unit, but you shouldn’t have any issues with sounds quality degradation. The nice thing about this unit is that it has pretty extensive sound mixing control to tune your audio for the sound you prefer.
@@Awesomoto awesome thank you very much. They hit very very hard and did not want to take that away!!!! Love your videos, they have really helped me out on what I want to do to my GX!
The excessive scanning on the “reveal” was a bit ridiculous. Like how many times do we need to pan across from one side to the other 😂
LMAO, you are so right man.
Wassup, how are still liking the phoenix?
Yes, I'm still liking the Phoenix. It certainly has some cons, but I think the list is short. It's a little slow to boot and the buttons for the AC controls could be bigger. Other than that I love the Apple CarPlay.
