In this video I took a small 3 day fishing trip with my buddy Will!
Everybody has a crazy fish story or two, some of which are slightly more believable than others. Even I have a few fish stories that when I tell them I don’t even believe they happened myself, which is funny considering I quite literally lived them. But for once, I have a crazy fish story that I got on film, something that never seems to happen. A story with the lowest of lows and the highest of highs, a story with broken spirits, struggle, misery, and lost hope all changed by one… singular… hookset. This is the story of the fish that ALMOST got away.
I’ve fished almost every state in the southeastern US for trout with one exception… Tennessee. Which if you’re a trout angler on the east coast, and probably even beyond, you now that TN has some of the biggest trout east of the Mississippi. So finally, after years of talking about it, I finally made a plan to go down to Tennessee with my buddy Will. This was just going to be a short 3 day trip with the first day focusing on fishing a few streams in Virginia I hadn’t been to. On our first creek of the day we made our first friend, a dear, dear friend, and one that we will forever cherish.
After I caught that rainbow we fished a bit longer but had no other success. This was the part of the story where we struggled, I mean we had fished 2 creeks on our first day and to be honest I got humbled at both of them. We decided last minute to book a guided trip for our second day of the trip and our first full day of fishing Tennessee. Hiring a guide in an area you’ve never been is a cheat code, especially if you plan on fishing a bigger river where floating is the best way to fish. The guide is going to know the ins and outs of the river, and the area, more than anyone. In this case we wanted to throw streamers and our guide Joe told us that was a bad idea if we wanted to actually catch fish. And as stubborn as both Will and I can be, we know better than to not listen to your guide. So we tied up a nymph rig and hit the water.
Will ended up losing a giant brown trout at the end of our float, and we decided to get redemption on day 3 after booking a second guided trip.
As if catching a 25 inch male brown on a size 20 nymph on the absolute last cast of the trip wasn’t insane enough, Will then looked at the fish and found a second fly which wasn’t mine. He handed it to Joe, who confirmed emphatically that it was one of his flies, which he had tied himself. Which meant that was the exact fish Will had fought and lost a little under 24 hours prior. The fish was caught in the same run, although it was in a different position than the day prior, and on a different fly. But to even hook the same fish, especially one of that caliber, on consecutive days is insanity. That gorgeous brown trout wasn’t my catch, it was our catch. Will should have landed the fish the day prior and got screwed over by some fishing line so he deserved it as much as I did, and our guide Joe’s knowledge of the river and what the fish were eating this time of year single handedly saved us from completely failing on this trip. So shouts out to Joe, If you’re in the area and want a knowledgeable guide he’s awesome! We had a blast fishing in Tennessee and will undoubtedly be back in the coming year. And that’s the story of the fish that ALMOST got away.
Thanks for watching this awesome fly fishing / trout fishing video!

That deer is a legend
Apparently she has a name already LOL
East TN is awesome! I remember learning to fly fish with my grandaddy at the spot y’all started your float trip. So excited to see you highlighting this area!
That's awesome!! It's a cool area that's for sure, I'll definitely be back before too long
That was really nice of Joe, the guide, ... he's obviously as fanatical about fishing as y'all and the $$$ is secondary... good man !!
From the Emerald Isle
😎👍☘️🍻
No doubt! Joe was a great guide. Thanks for watching
Lived in Bristol TN basically whole life. I’ve fished that section from weir damn on down and caught my PB actually upstream towards the big damn a few springs ago. 29” almost 10 lbs Brown. Huge fish in the Holston river. Thanks for the first reaction, hey I know that place!
I've been living in kingsport for about a year and was just recommended below the damn
Jeff it’s ghost falcon or whatever my 12 yo has it these days. Yes, you are correct that’s where I caught that big brown. Seems they always generate from the right side. The 2 generators form a v shaped land mass where you can walk up to both generators. You’ll catch big fish up there close to the dam. PS it’s tough walking on the boulders they made the damn out of & I usually fish there in Spring & Fall. I hope this helps.
That's awesome that deer is wanting to learn how to fly fish.
Dude, congratulations guys. This video literally almost brought me to tears at the end.
That means it's a good video! (I think) Thanks for watching!
I had deer follow me into the big woods when hunting in N Ga.
They’re very curious animals and sometimes one’s that have never seen humans are even more curious.
They hear you walking into the woods and come to investigate.
This actually made me test this theory by sprinting to my ladder at the last 50 yards or so after walking in quietly.
In many instances I would have curious deer run right within archery range seconds or minutes after I sat in my ladder stand.
Try it….it works if deer are close but cant see you.
Small nymph, BIG FISH, your'e up to your usual tricks Jon! Deer was a treat too! You always get something extra when in a new State. I enjoyed it, Thanks Buddy!
Heck yeah thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
Brother that may be your best video yet. From the deer to the great brown that was incredible story telling !!!! Mesmerized !!!! Good looking out for your partner as well. That had to sting pretty good loosing that fish under those circumstances …. Ouch. He earned the shout out .
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Probably one of my favorites this year for sure
I live in East Tennessee about 5 mins from the Watauga and very close to the Holston. Amazing fishing waters. Glad you got to experience it!
Carter, Washington or Sullivan county. Me too. Stoney creek.
Wow. Incredible footage man. The deer and that monster brown trout at the end, OUTSTANDING guys. Great job 👏
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed!
glad you finally made it to my neck of the woods! you fished some really good spots and got a great experience on the humbling tailwater many dream of fishing
Dude that deer and that fish are awsome!! What an insane trip!! Keep on the good work your videos are awsome dude!!
absolute beautiful fish at the end
Thank you!
SPECHLES ABOUT THE DEER 🦌 🦌
I've always wanted to try Tennessee myself lol. Looks like you boys had a fun time! That deer was crazy
What an incredible story!
Thank you!
Beautiful video
That’s a river I’ve just been getting into fishing! Tailwater fishing can be humbling. I’m actually doing my first guided trip up there next week
Heck yeah man!! Have fun and good luck. Some awesome fish in that river
That deer might be food when hunting season comes round!!
Great stories! This right here is what life is all about!
Couldn’t agree more! Thanks!!
Awesome brown fellas!!! Tightlines!
Thanks man!!
Great video! no shortage of big browns in east TN!
Yeah they’re definitely around! We saw plenty of them ourselves. Glad you enjoyed the video.
definitely hard to find them! gotta go over the line to NC!
Very cool video Jonathan! Looked like the Jackson at the beginning.
Awesome Brown! I have seen many deer fishing, usually a white flag and gone. 🦌Enjoyed 👍
Excellent watch fellas!!!
Thank you!
Bravo Bravo! 👏👏👏 once again, nice work!
another great story and fish thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Make another trip to the SoHo early summer, the Sulphur hatch is epic, best dry fly fishing east of the Mississippi.
Have the sulphurs recovered from the TVA turbine repair? I fished the sulphur hatch before TVA started work on the dam, and it was indeed epic. During and after TVA took forever to finish the work, not so much.
Oh yea it’s back, it’s been great the last 2 years.
@@richardpigg1045 thanks. I will try to fish it next spring. Know any good guides? I used to fish with Mike Adams.
@ South Holston Fly Shop, Matt, Joe or Robert. Matt Champion owns this shop, it’s on Emmett Road 5 mins from the river, Matt is the best but Joe and Robert are great also.
Great story…amazing luck 👍🏼
Thank you! I'd rather be lucky than good hahaha
Awesome! Praise God. ❤❤
Like always awesome video!!
That’s my home water, and it’s damn good. Good fish
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed
This is my home water, really cool to see you fishing out here!
Heck yeah! You’ve got some awesome home water!
excellent video John,
Thank you!
Freaking awesome video ❤❤❤, can't wait for the next one
Was just at the soho a week ago! Got a 26 on a tiny hot spot bwo! 26 isn’t uncommon up in Ny where I live but it’s pretty cool catching a giant on a big tailwater like that!
That deer is a perfect example of what happens when deer are fed by humans. They no longer fear humans; instead, they associate people with food. That deer will eventually come in contact with someone who will harm her in some way.
I’m from east tn we have a lot of good trout fishing people come out of state to fish our rivers I think that’s pretty cool come on back down anytime
New fly fisher here. Great video, and glad you're enjoying our East TN trout streams. What kind of fly line are you using? Looks much thinner than what I'm used to seeing?
Now that's a redemption story!
Everybody loves a good redemption story!
Didn’t realize you would be able to see me shaking the camera so badly at the end there haha. What an interesting 72 hours that was!
Yeah that camera does really well with stopping movement too 😂 that’s when you know you were shaking bad!
Eat TN is very beautiful im still trying to get my start into fly fishing fully
You gotta come to Erie pa and do some steelhead fishing on the fly
Come fish the little juniata in central PA
deer was waiting to be fed😂
🔥🔥🔥
Props exploring new territory - some really pretty water. We’ve all had a few big ones get away…redemption with the same STUD fish is nuts. Good stuff man. Any chance you’d shoot me Joe’s info?
He works as a guide out of south holston angler! I don’t want to put his phone number here obviously. But he’s a good dude
Anyone who is not familiar with the South Holston should take note that certain sections of the river are closed from November 1 - January 1 during the brown trouts' spawning season.
Yep! Although they should probably close even more than they do 😂 it’s insane the section up near the dam is still open to be honest
Pretty sure I’ve fished at that weird hollowed out tree.
That’s the same river I fish that’s crazy
A really nice looking fish. But coming from the UK describing it as a 25 inch fish doesn't mean a thing, I would loved to have known what it weighed. Fish of the same length can vary a lot in size. Most of the trout fishing here is for stocked fish in reservoirs where two foot fish are common. Looking forward to the next episode.
I have a pet fox it only became my friend because I gave it fish Buffalo New York Forest Street in the creek I'm able to touch it I don't dare to pick it up though Sunday night bike Ride is when I first met that fox gave it fish everyday until it started to trust me so cool anybody in Buffalo New York go to Forest Street you will see that fox
How do you set up your euro leader? Is it just heavy mono attached to your euro line and then a tippet ring at the tag end you then tie your nymph tippet to? Would you be interested in breaking down your euro set up, I just recently picked up the clearwater ESN set up and the FIPPS style indicator line, I feel like might be throwing me off with my casts.
I live in Knoxville TN and want to get into fishing/fly fishing but don’t know where to start. Any suggestions? Great video and catch btw!!
What net are you using there? Just curious why you are using some sort of telescoping net vs regular trout pond type net
I thought you were getting away from the background music… Still a great video, though. Looks like fun!
You need some music to tell the story I think 😂 just a regular fishing day? Yeah I’ll go without music. But with a story that has so many ups and downs music captures that so well.
People probably feed that deer. Therefore, no fear of humans. Also, I love streamers almost as much as weighted nymphs. But I digress.
What line where you using for your streamers
What knot did you use to tie on the streamer?
Just a loop knot
@ just looked it up. That’s a new know for me. Cool thanks. And great videos (and of course great fish!)
And thats why thelast cast is never actually the last cast
Need at least 7 last casts
What’s the guide service Joe works for??
It’s in the video, but it’s South Holston Angler I think
I saw this on insta and then realized this is not farm from me I’m on the south holston river
A deer, hanging out with you in Virginia? Shocking (/s)
What’s your rod set up?
What is your setup???
That's a helluva float trip for the southeast! Loved every minute. Felt sorry for the deer. Anyone who's gonna tame a deer like that should put an orange collar on her with name and address. So the game warden can cite you for being a dumb-ass.
what rod is that ur using?
Doesn’t anyone ever keep the fish they catch?
that deer was a fisherman in its past life...
Damang kakak
Which part of TN is this?
You need to explain where you are
I do? Sorry didn't realize that was a requirement for a RUclips video
the intros have to be more to the point if i am honest. its not a romantic film series we anglers want to watch. we want peace and action in 1 video!!
Everybody wants something different 😂 I try to do a little bit of both. This video was more of a story, but the last 3 I’ve posted had little editing and almost no music. So if you want that style I’ve got plenty of it! Thanks for watching
Too bad your camera was taking shots of your arms instead of the fish you supposedly caught!!
On the seriousness of you may have lost a friend or a loved one you can interpret the deer being reincarnation of that person!!! And the. Showing ya things are good. Or. It’s a way of knowing your of 1 with Mother Nature. True serenity!!!
Was wondering why it seemed like you never fished TN. Should consider the Clinch, if/when you make it back out, if you want to move some big browns. Arguably TNs most challenging/rewarding tailwater.
I have a story about another youtube video completely ruined with ignorant background music that forced me to look elsewhere. Thank you
Day 10 of commenting every day!
Day 10 of responding (after catching up)
That a pig
That’s a not deer
You’re a more poetic..better story telling Steve Rinella
I don’t know about that! But thank you!
This is my home! It’s absolutely the best fishing for trout aside from Wyoming! I’m going to plug a friend of mine that will put you on the best trout in the area! Anthony Conrad with Conrad’s Guide Service. You won’t have a more informative guide!
