Don't know why I didn't pick up on this while editing, but the concept carpark animatic is a much closer match to the Miller cutscene: archive.org/details/medge_concept_footage/Mirror's+Edge+-+Cutscene+-+Carpark+Animatic+-+431156822.mp4
That sounds so great, could you imagine if they gave it actual cutscenes? Those 2d ones always felt so cheap imo, I'd love to see them reworked like this
Probably just to make the cutscene more visually interesting. In the 2D cutscene they do that by doing shot - reverse shot, but when you're locked to a certain POV you have to get more creative to achieve similar effects. Like how in 1917 they had characters walk around several tables so that they could show different characters' faces while keeping to the same angle. They kinda do it in other cutscenes in ME as well, Faith is walking all over the office when meeting Kate for the first time, if they'd animated that in 2D she'd probably just be mostly standing by the desk.
@@HOTD108_ They meant "PS3 aesthetics" of the early map from the second part of the video, not "PS3 Mirror's Edge". 7th gen console era games (PS3/X360) had often that dirty brown "realistic" look. Which made Mirror's Edge stand out even more. The colors started to come back during early 2010s, but second half of 00s was *brown*.
I've been a mirror's edge fan for more than a decade, and I've never seen that second level before. I didn't think any assets relating to that era of development were left over. Super cool to see. I wonder if it can be restored at all.
Really cool to know more about games cut content! 2:23 I instantly recognised the map. When messing around in level editor I found some cubemaps with this level. I love that old more realistic design. And cutscenes instead of levels. Kinda cool concept + immersive. Also someone was able to launch leaked build?
It's very clear the 2D cutscenes were a last-minute solution to time and money running out. Like when you were fighting Celeste, she gets away, then you suddenly catch up to her. They were gonna have them in-game, and a final chase in-between. Or how the final fight was turned into an obstacle course. All the gameplay and story, and dialogue trimmed out during development. If only EA was patient.
Cool! I guess they intended to have more cutscenes in-game. Maybe they ran out of time, or simply for stylistic reasons decided to do FMVs instead. As for the in-game one lasting longer, they probably tightened up the end or cut some dialog for pacing.
is there any way you could export the files from that build? because that would've been pretty cool for others to take a look at that by themselves, not gonna lie

Much better scene, better acting too.
I love seeing new stuff so many years after release
Miller's unfinished facial animation makes him look like Willem Dafoe
Such a shame we got so little time with Miller in-engine. His character design and model clearly took a lot of work.
a lot of work? he's the definition of basic, just a guy with greying hair wearing a white shirt.
Neat to see this unused stuff! Still an amazing game nearly 20 years later.
This comment made me feel incredibly old
*20!?*
Hello Miller I will now proceed to walk around you like you're a Christmas tree
I wonder if, someday in the far future, we'll get a remake of Medge with all the originally-intended content that we've missed out on

Why does she keep spinning around him 😂 also miller's jawline is insane

grey PS3-aesthetic mirror's edge looks so wrong... i'm so glad they went with the iconic minimalist design
I have Mirror's Edge on PS3 and it looks exactly like the other versions lol.

The only reason why Mirror's Edge has all white buildings with colored accents is because of a failed light bake. They just ran with it.

5:01 The 'foggy' city makes me wish ME had more varied weather in each level, but that sound bug is nightmare fuel, lol.
sounds like silent hill monsters
I've never seen Faith's detailed hitbox before. It's interesting to see the blocks responsible for the secondary motion of her hair.
I noticed that too. It also makes sense given how Asian women love their bangs
i cant believe the NYC showcase map was finally found
Miller: "Why you flanking me?"
Miller over here looking like a finely dressed Beavis with that protruding bottom jaw.

she walks around the cop like a shark lol. make no sense but its cool that it was in-game before they changed to cartoon
Only imagine if it was in game...
Man, I would’ve loved more first person cutscenes! Even this super-rough prototype feels more immersive than the final animations.

Awesome research! thank you for this video!

Mirror's Edge is such a hidden gem of EA. other than the old NFS games, Mirror's Edge is definitely peak of EA.
1:26 faith STAND STILL
Dang never thought of this cool
More cut content please!
Super interesting
Not gonna lie but I still love the animations cutscenes
At this point, you probably know the game's engine better than the guy who wrote it.
So DICE dont have time and resources for 3d cut-scene,
and choose to buy cartoon replacement as fast as they can
Interesting story
2:49 is evil
cool video
They removed from pc port ? sadge
