The “magoo” year. He was tremendous. Everything went his way. He won the superbikers and swept all 4 motos of the mx and throphy des nations. A feat never before achieved nor will it ever be duplicated. Danny was a one-of-a-kind talent. Sad how he went out. He deserved better..
I agree man .....but I came to realize that life isn't fair , and chance plays a bigger role than we want to admit. I think he was gonna be in the fight for the 500 world title on that kawi. But fate had a different agenda
@@mikeandrews1899no doubt, that sucked when he threw it all away in France. He was hung over etc., it just sucks the pressure the teams put on those guys, never mind they literally risk their ass every day. I miss Magoo he was a true bro
I have a friend who was a factory Honda rider in 1983 and he had a very similar experience with life. The higher you climb the farther you fall (for some) Alcohol ruined his life
Being a Foresthill native it’s such a joy to see “Magoo” dominate. Was an awesome experience watching him shock the world growing up as a kid in his hometown. Danny “Magoo” Chandler was the greatest!
Saw Magoo in 1975 at Puyallup Wa. He was doing one handed jumps and huge whips and I believe he is the first freestyle athlete. No one else was doing that in 1975
A friend of mine and I helped flagged the race. Our friend, Marty Smith, got us the opportunity. at about 1:25, I'm in the inside of the corner in white t-shirt provided by the race and white duck trousers specified by the racing organization. We were stuck there at our posts for a long time. Magoo was on another level and was riding so loose. 500cc two-strokes were monsters!
I raced that track in ‘83 and had a lot more respect for the pro’s after that . I raced amateur from ‘81-‘83 and finally realized I was not going to “ Live the dream” of a full sponsored ride . Humbling experience. Those WERE the Glory days of Moto -cross though . 😎👍
I raced against Broc Glover at Carlsbad in 1983. I will tell you this, he did the fastest laps ever recorded at Carlsbad. By the way, Glover did not race the 500 event in 82.
Thank you so much for bringing back the memories!! I grew up right down the street from Carlsbad Raceway, lots of fun over the years riding and racing !! TO bad it's a bunch of buildings now!!
At user..we stayed at the fransiscan inn while attending rolf’s husky training camp at carlsbad. We got to ride the unpreppred gp track every day. It was brutal, like concrete with dust sprinkled on it..
@@jpesicka492 Hahaha, easy bud, I know. I was talkin about the riders that year, Shultz, Chandler, and Bad Brad!! All Norcal guy's, Magoo Des Nations champ, both classes. Shultz 500cc National champ, and Lackey 500cc World Champ! First American mx world champ. Got love and respect for SoCal, but that was NorCals year
@user-se7vt5ow4e..this is iconic carlsbad. the glen helen gp track looks fearsome..my brother, jeff harper won a vintage event there on his resto’d fmf cr125..he remarked that the circuit was gnarly ...
had first year rm80,yz,kx,and 3 wheelers to 250,and then cr 480 was nasty, got cr500,it was more tame.growing up on kodiak island alaska had all the toys from 60s,and into dirt bikes etc.
AtRadioReprised.. I use to cut an inch off of each side. I liked maico, cz and husky bend. We ran our bars lower then whats in vogue today. Jimmy weinert’s were practically laying on his tank..
The best era of motocross! Bring back the 500 cc two stroke.
And the 125’s
The tree huggers ruined it for us. Won't meet emission 😢
Bonjour,
Also in France 😜
From France.
Are you joking? There's not a single jump on that track, just glorified bumps
I was referring to the bikes and the riders. Watching them at Unidilla was awesome.@@jonnycrash7389

@@keithwebster5418yeh that sucks man, a few of them got some $ in their pockets and couldn’t handle it, sad. Guys at the peak of their lives
@@keithwebster5418so might as well say his name 1983 what 5 or six guys.

Danny “Magoo” Chandler was the greatest!
So funny to hear Jackie Stewart as a motocross commentator!
No doubt!!! I literally just asked myself, "Is that Jackie Stewart?" and you confirmed it. Thank you.
He was into it too, he loved all Motorsports apparently 👍

Back when outdoor motocross was awesome and the best.

Always awesome seeing Magoo showing them how it's done but what a bummer Wardy went down he was hauling!
I was always amazed at Wardy manhandling that 500 especially being a smaller guy, I wouldn’t have wanted to tangle with him
Love this video, thanks so much for posting. These were riders I read about as a kid.
Long Live "Magoo" 💪❤️✌️😉

I live in vista. there is some remnants of the old drag strip still there. sad...

Such fantastic memories ✊✌️
Love the track no giant jumps! We could use tracks like this now. Too many injuries
I loved racing at Carlsbad Raceway!
I went from racing minis in 1975 to racing a CR250 Elsinore until 1979.
CMC #62E
Wow,I rode that track many years after this race and what a different track it was, still a rough track but it wasn't that long🤟
Carlsbad forced riders to practice line diversity as the line that worked on the previous lap has now deteriorated forcing the rider into a new line.
Look at the speed of these bikes! Incredible
it amazing how much the rear tire kicks out with the old suspension. Looks brutal.
Magoo legend RIP
Sounds like Sir Jackie Stewart on commentary
Because it is Jackie Stewart
Jackie Stewart called foot pegs Stirrups. Hilarious 🚬🐔🪓🇺🇸
The 1st time Simons Forks went to Europe in a Championship and they came back World Champions....On Brad Lakey's SUZUKI !
🇺🇸Danny Chandler was the real deal, Wild West American😂 I was a senior in high school watching this on tv and loving every minute of it 🇺🇸
All time best 🏆 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Whe NorCal moto ruled the world!!
Carlsbad is in SoCal buddy. SD County smh.

Now, an industrial park sits where engines once roared.
Awesome. ty
Back when going to California was worth the drive. 2 STROKE OR DIE.
Glenn Helen is an amazing MX track it is sad that the AMA dropped this track from the nationals.

Notice the lack of track prep, water it to keep dust down and make it slick.

Uuuuuuuuuuu Danny ❤🎉
bad Brad was good, maggoo,so many good riders back in the day.Im 61 and now I follow danger Boy Deegan, hes a good rider and dad was killer to.
I had forgotten how wide my bars were....

Who doesn't love Jackie Stewart?
I was 16 or so when met them all that day, Andre, Brad, Roger, Jeff et al. Pictures to prove it
500cc, Air Cooled with the back end squirming around like a Snake in a frying pan!
As the infomanious sgt Schultz once said ,I kn😢ow
Jackie Steward and Jim Lampley with I think a bit of Sam Posey sprinkled in. Hmm.
Is that Jackie Stewart commentating??
Yep 😂
Use to live right buy there use to ride with my dad in the hills by the water tower up in calavara hills by hope elementary school
Championship ending day for Malherbe RIP.
And now Carlsbad just has Teslas and HOA's :(
Maico ?
Just ubiquitous strip malls and generic housing now…
Bruh there form was horrible. Elbows down and knees forward.
Nothing
LAMEST M/X track I've ever seen..............
This was before the supercross influence and big sponser money.. The business of motocross happened slowly and finally hired bulldozers.
Danny Chandler was so far out front that he was in a class by himself in that 1st race.
