This is back in the days when singers actually SANG... none of this technical vocal assistance or auto tunes. Paul may have given this song life but Jennifer and Luther killed this song, then brought it back and killed it again. I love their voices together. RIP Luther!!!
I love to hear Black people sing because of they way they use their voices. I go on a journey with singers who are not one dimensional and are not afraid to try new places with their voices. Black singers are the masters of this. This was a evening to remember for a life time.
Jennifer Holliday voice got to be one of the best ever , The eighth wonder of the world ! The way she just comes out snatchin wigs and takin peoples to church. She has proper mastered her voice, how does she sing like that. Oh my days this is the best she has ever saaaang and the anointing.
I've had the pleasure of seeing Luther Vandross in concert and he has a way of making an audience go crazy just using his vocal talent. When he does those runs...man. Great song and brilliant soulful performance by all.
I love how at around 4:10 when Luther does his infamous thing with his voice, Jennifer was looking like "You better f*** it up, brother!" LOL I love seeing this! Paul just let them go ahead and take it. LOL
P.S. is a great writer and he sounded great, but what could he do with a powerhouse vocalist like Jennifer Holliday and a smooth vocalist like Luther. R.i.p Mr Vandross, you are truly missed!!
3:59 I absolutely love the way Luther sings the part "just like a bridge" Look at Paul Simons face when Luther does his woo-oOO-OOO, classic! Paul is like "What is that and where is it coming from?!"
Paul Simon is one of THE MOST gifted song writters of all times. When some of you put his singing skills down just remember that it is his skills to write songs like these that gives the great singers something worth singing about. Learn to respect the gifts that are in each person. God never intended for us to all have the same gifts. I have just as much respect for Paul as i do for the 2 magnificent voices singing HIS song. Stop putting people down because it does not make you look better.
Beloved Paul didn't have a chance in singing lead with Beloved Luther, and Jenifer,Holliday PAUL SIMON,Thank You for the inspired song, ,"Bridge over Troubled Water",GOD BLESS YOU!!! PASTOR, FIREBALL NY
Paul was not gonna survive here.. but hands down he wrote one of the most beautiful song of comfort for every race colour and creed. A timeless piece. that's great.. and Jen and Luther did it justice.
I know. Thas what people be talking about that white folks get the privilege to get famous for being be mediocre. His writing was great, but his voice ain't nowhere near singer material. He and many others, in my opinion, are not good singers at all.
As a kid growing up in the late 60's, early 70's - the only voice I heard singing this song was Aretha Franklin. This is my 1st time hearing Jennifer & Luther and I love it!!! I;ve listened to versions sung by Ray Charles, Elvis Pressely & Millie Jackson - but for me, the QUEEN owns this song, always & forever!
He wrote the song and he sang it with the voice that he had. Nothing wrong with that. BUT, people can rearrange music to fit their voice and their style which is why Paul sounds like the odd man out in THIS VERSION because it was arranged for the types of vocals Jennifer and Luther have--soulful sounds coming from the bottom of your gut. You can't compare vocals if they are doing completely different arrangements. Now had Jennifer tried to sing it exactly like Paul did, you could but she didn't
How I love love LOVE this performance. And not because I am a HUGE JENNIFER HOLIDAY FANATIC!!! but it's clear as day that Paul Simon didn't really have a chance to shine against big voice/powerhouse Jennifer Holliday & Velvet teddy sounding Luther Vandross. Its almost as if the sound master simply turned Paul's mic down so Luther & Jennifer could take over. Unless Paul didn't know how to ad-lib to his song...lol Idk, I just know this is my favorite clip from that performance.
OR Jennifer Holliday!!!lol In all seriously, I'm impressed Paul Simon had enough sense to sing his little cute part and then get out of the way for the big voices!!
Jen and Luther blew the roof off that place, Wow...Paul was so low sangin even the backup or choir so to speak, over powered his voice... the choir of course are strong...Paul wrote this sweet tune and I wanna thank him..😘
This is available to purchase/rent on DVD now: "Paul Simon and Friends: Night of Gospel Glory." Blockbuster viewers give it a high 4 star rating; it's a 60 minute concert from 1987.

I don't mean this as a racist comment but i love the way Black people just make up stuff as they perform live....it just hit Luther all of a sudden to do that and send the audience into a frenzy. Nothing like Sweet Soul Music.....not on this earth.
It's a little known fact that this version of the song's why Paul and Art Garfunkel broke up. He just could never forgive him for not being Aretha Franklin.
from Jose' "Timo" Sepulveda........God, I miss Luther. I loved the old "chubbyier" Luther.......he looked healthier........chubby or skinny, brother still had those pipes, though.....
Un agasajo y deleite Musical he escuchado diferentes versiones pero como ésta es INSUPERABLE !!! No me canso de escucharla !!! Pregunta en que año fue ?

OMG, Jennifer Holliday give you goosebumps, who in this Planet can sing like this woman ? Nobody .

Luther always snatched up the best of the female singers for duets, but I don't know why he and Jennifer never did a duet together.
Paul Simon was looking like, "now, they know this is not how we practiced this shit!" 😂😩
LOL
netpoon07 What LOL

Aretha Franklin had a big influence on a whole lot of singers, a lot of soul in this singing.
Yes both Luther and Holliday studied Aretha as fans and it shows in this performance! Loved it so much!!
Jennifer ATE THAT!
I love to hear Black people sing because of they way they use their voices. I go on a journey with singers who are not one dimensional and are not afraid to try new places with their voices. Black singers are the masters of this. This was a evening to remember for a life time.
DaOrigTruthSeeker that was a great comment
Yes you should listen to black gospel then
@@TheFresh654 So you should listen to Ângela Maria, a Brazilian singer, Janis Joplin, an American singer and Joss Stone, an English singer.
@@TheFresh654 Otherwise, Janis and Jennifer could be an explosive duet like this.
The children of Judah, the praise worshipers 😊
Jennifer blew everybody off the stage including Luther.. Her voice is so powerful .
Jennifer Holliday voice got to be one of the best ever , The eighth wonder of the world ! The way she just comes out snatchin wigs and takin peoples to church. She has proper mastered her voice, how does she sing like that. Oh my days this is the best she has ever saaaang and the anointing.

Love seeing Simon move to the music.

Well Simon & Garfunkel wrote the song so I'm sure Simon was ok being the backup singer.
ThBestSinger! TheBestSinger! Paul Simon was the sole songwriter of this song. Art Garfunkel did not co-write it.
TemBrie Redd-Wafer Paul Simon wrote this song by himself. Art Garfunkel did not co-write it.
Beautiful
