everybody designs totally different. but there are some fundamentals required and there was a lot left out here. its best to take out a book from the library ( a few) and just read the basics in fabric care and handling, and YOU don't always have to cut on the Grain, (were not making clothing) but its a little more crucial if it will be a hanging quilt. YOU will want it to drape properly then. Also its great to invest in an Olfa cutter and a computer aided program like PHOTOSHOP to work out ideas..I have a scanner that I scan my fabric into, then I manipulate the patterns on photoshop. All ideas are good.
How do you do the math having a 26" square to a twin size quilt do add ,X. or divided it Now I remember why math and I had our problems this maybe a show idea

With Quilt cat app quilt design is easy peasy. No math, just drawing.
Yeah, 'just do the work" is not super helpful....
