A nice surprise this morning, Lil Rowe had her first set of baby chicks, Sedgwig hatched out a few of her own, and a Snowball popped out a pure bred baby! This created a busy morning as I had to get the new mums setup for success.

And a name reveal? Dabbles. I totally didn't see that coming! My goodness the homestead is going to be so busy for you over the next month. Bonus chicks abound... That's sad about what happened with the Snowball hens, but it seems Lil' Rowe didn't have an issue taking in the chick. You usually have to sneak a chick in at night so the hen believes she hatched it themselves for it to be accepted. I bet Sammy is thrilled to have little ones again, he acts very maternal for a rooster, it's so sweet.

Me too, but I guess that's a temporary place for Li'l Rowe and her chicks for now. We might see some coop shuffle in a few days❤
I'm worried too! I know the pigs started grunting more, as they wanted to get too them. They are so little, I hope nothing happens. Says a prayer for them all to survive. ❤❤❤❤

I love the fact that Sammy has accepted that is his house and stays there without trying to run out. Sammy is such a great daddy to the babies again.

I’m glad you got babies! I lost one of my hens today and I only have four left now, I went 5 years with 6 chickens then the last two years I’ve lost one each year. But love that you have babies!! Circle of life ❤🎉 mine was a dog problem so no sicknesses but I cannot wait to watch these babies grow! I live vicariously through you with homesteading ! I’m in the country but far from being a homestead. Someday I’ll make it a reality. Love dabbles as well! So much love for all the birds today

I’m having a heck of a time keeping the aprons on my hens to 🥴 somehow they Houdini themselves halfway out and walk half sideways. I reassure them that as soon as they grow more feathers I’ll take it off.
I went on Amazon, and they have ones with adjustable snaps. They are expensive but reviews are good. The other ones are flimsy, and that's why they can get them off. Hope this helps.
Could you have used the incubators on lil roe and the snowball remaining eggs?
Maybe, it would just be more work. Ib rather hatch the natural way when possible

When baby chicks start walking around, hens are not interested in sitting on eggs anymore. Which is sad for the other eggs that were about to hatch cus they end up dying inside the eggs. You should’ve just gave the chicks from the big chicken to little Ro and little Ro’s unhitched eggs to the big chicken so she can keep sitting and try to hatch all the chicks and just keep giving little Ro the new hatching chicks. It’s easier to do that at night when they’re sleeping just put the babies to the new mom.

What if you stacked cinderblocks into a false wall in front of the sliding barn door to keep the pigs from rubbing on the door and knocking it off track? Seems like it would be easier then moving the track for the door. Sinking some rebar down through the blocks will help to hold them in place and then you can move them when you no longer have to block their access to the door.
The wall would be too be mortored together, pigs are strong enough to move a false wall. They are incredibly strong. And at that point it would be easier to move the door to the other side.

Take the top off the middle nesting box in Burt's love shack. They need more options. Burts love shack isn't really equiped for a nursery.

That's great. Question, Why not put the yellow crate with all the eggs and babies in the big area, rather than move each egg and bird?

Other chickens will kill the baby chick's usually. Ive had that to happen to a whole bunch of my little chickens. Some were already dead before I got there

I know this is probably a stupid question but is there a difference between the eggs seeing their different color's??
Might be better off leaving the mamas wherever they are cause sometimes they don’t take to the nest moving and end up getting confused:( or if you really have to because another is being aggressive, move the whole thing it’s in like the crate for example!❤
