    THANK YOU! I ordered the Pico 4 a couple days ago based on reddit comments which line up with what you said. I was nervous if I made a mistake since most youtubers are ignoring the pico 4 in the quest 3 reviews...or hyping the quest 3.

    • @thenonexistinghero
      @thenonexistinghero 11 месяцев назад +1

      Well, one of the issues is that the Pico 4 isn't available in the US. So basically just European and Asian regions have easy access to it. That being said... Pico 4 & Quest 3 do provide a very similar PCVR experience. Quest 3 has slightly higher quality streaming & slightly lower input delay (since higher bitrate thanks to new chip) and it gets brighter and slightly darker... so it has a better contrast too. The FoV's also a tiny bit larger and there's a few other minor improvements above the Pico 4. But the Pico 4 seems to have less of a screendoor effect and a few other minor advantages based on an individual.
      Long story short... they're pretty close, but the Quest 3 seems to be slightly better in most ways. If you already have a Pico 4, there's no reason to upgrade to a Quest 3 for PCVR. If you don't have a Pico 4 yet, might as well spend a little bit more money and get a Quest 3 instead.

    Hi Mark. Very comprehensive video. I certainly would like to see some in depth videos on using the Quest 3. One thing you did say that I disagree with was "It doesn't offer anything revolutionary or innovative". With the improvement on pass through video and Mixed Reality it offers for the first time using Mixed Reality in Flight Simming. Able to see your real world instruments along with the VR experience. Russ Barlow has done some good work on this, and it shows some great promise for the future. Keep up the great work Mark.

Then I fell off my chair when you mentioned the recent CTD's. For a week now I have been driven to madness, I went from not crashing a single time for well over a year to near unplayable. Very useful and timely information. I'll be using this to help me set up my Quest 3 for PCVR with my 4090. I was very skeptical about buying this Q3 as I have a G2 and I love the Display Port low latency. I think this is going to work out though because the lenses are beautiful and it's a snappy little device to use. It is a very good upgrade from Quest 2, easily twice the device in every way. I think they'll smooth it out and make some improvements with driver updates and I think they are going to sell a lot of them. Thx for the video.

  • @kevinbrook7033
    @kevinbrook7033 Год назад +14

    Great overview Mark. I have the Quest 3 and G2 and your experiences match my own there. I still prefer the Quest Pro over both the Quest 3 and G2 for PCVR although I've not used the Pico 4. In the UK, the Quest Pro is only £750 on Amazon which is cheaper than the Quest 3 with the larger storage option and the elite headstrap. Whilsts its MR and standalone capabilities aren't as good as Quest 3 the QLED displays, local dimming and foveated rendering eye tracking capabilities still make it a formidable PCVR headset.
    I know what you mean about grain. I don't notice so much in the Quest 3, but it is a bit more noticeable in the Quest Pro. I don't notice it any more though after a year of daily use. I also see a bit of mura in the Quest 3, and have some dead pixels, build quality seems below Quest Pro, which has no mura or dead pixels.
    I didn't know that OpenXR could bypass Steam, I haven't used it for a year or so, I will give it another look. I also haven't tried wireless in the Quest 3 yet as my experiences in Quest Pro and Quest 2 were always well below the link cable for me, and showed visibile compression. I have Virtual Desktop so I will install it on my Quest 3 and give that a try.
    I see you only run it on Virtual desktop at 78 mb/s second though? With the Link cable I run it at 500 mb/s and it virtually eliminates all compression artifacts, whenever I've tried wireless before it looks visibly compressed to me, I assumed because of the low bitrate?

    • @tomc1380
      @tomc1380 Год назад

      I pretty well agree with all that Kevin. The QPro is still a very good (and under rated) PCVR headset. I'm enjoying my new Q3/512Gb with elite battery strap, and it's a keeper. I only intend to use it for Standalone mobile VR/MR, and as a backup to my Qpro. I also still have a +4yo Vive Pro1 with amoled screens, Etsy lens mod, 2x2.0 base stations, and Index controllers. Although the SDE is still a bit more than I'd like, it's still nice to use once in a while for darkish games and night flying. These headsets will do me until a QPro2 is released (2025?).
      I also agree it's pretty hard to beat Link at 500-650mbps. For me, Air Link at 200mbps dynamic plus 5mbps dynamic offset is almost a good, and it's my preferred way to play everything. Using the Oculus OpenXR default bypasses SteamVR and you can still use the OpenXR Toolkit. However, since getting an i913900k/4090 I haven't seen any significant reasons to use this anymore.
      To me it seems like Irish logic to need to run a separate program(s) in order just to do this with Virtual Desktop. Every time I hear RUclipsrs complain that they can't get Link or Air Link to work as well as VD, I cringe, and generally unsubscribe. On top of this, we then see headset comparisons based on sub-optimal setups and settings. Oh well, people are welcome to believe whatever they like, and use whatever they think works best I guess.

      @@rangerkayla8824 I only play wired and don't play racing sims it's just low and slow flying for me. Ive been comparing Quest Pro and Quest 3 for wired PCVR tonight. Quest 3 wired could run an encode bitrate of 700 mb/s without issue in MSFS and was very smoother. The Pro struggles above 500 mb/s. It still looks smooth but there is audio stutter every 10 to 15 seconds which I guess is caused by the lower end chip being overloaded.
      Despite this, the Quest Pro looks better still. It's very close bit it's QLED displays are early better quality than the 3's regular LCD panels. The local dimming really shines during sunsets as well.
      I will continue to use Quest Pro for PCVR, and keep the Quest 3 for standalone and mixed reality.

    • @kevinbrook7033
      @kevinbrook7033 Год назад

      @@rangerkayla8824 For sure, personal use case matters a lot. The Pro also has a very divisive open design. For some, like me, once modded with a top straps the most comfortable headset ever, and a joy not to need a facial interface, but then there are others who hate it for the same reason. Really comes down to personal preference and individual use case. Quest 3 might be a much better wireless headset, but I have always liked the wire so not tested.
      Quest 3 is much better for standalone and MR though, so hard to recommend the Pro unless you really want the open design and eye tracking.
      I'm happy with both for different use cases.

    • @kevinbrook7033
      @kevinbrook7033 Год назад

      @@rangerkayla8824 I guess I've always stuck with Meta as I like their headsets. For the last year the Pro has had the best optics, best inside out tracking, best controllers, most features. I dont just play PCVR I use VR for exercise, specifically connecting to a stationary bike and Concept 2 rower which only works with Quest headsets.
      I've had all the best old school PCVR headsets, Index , Vive Pro 2 and G2 and preferred the Pro over them. Of the current high resolution headsets I hate the bulk of the Crystal, prefer pancake optics to aspherics because of the form factor. The BSB appeals to me but I'd need to buy base stations and Index controllers again, and Pico, Valve, Samsung, Apple and maybe Meta all have high end headsets coming in 2024 so didn't want to buy a PCVR headset now only for something much better to come out in a a year.

      @@kevinbrook7033I use link at 900 both encoding and dynamic, 0 stutters on audio, maybe it’s cuz I use wired earphones or AirPods via pc Bluetooth. Came from pico 4 and actually surprised at the upgrade. Loving the QP design, Qled panels, sharper despite slightly lower res, SDE is more apparent on text only but everywhere else, it just disappears, no different than P4, 10 bit color accuracy, high knit brightness, DFR and air cooled just like p4. Once calibrated (20% contrast and 50% brightness in settings) the panels really come to life with the color depth and local dimming. I bought the aero and boxed it up, on the way back. Only gets beaten by pure resolution, i actually prefer the panels in the QP, like an Apple Cinema Display 1440p vs 4K Hisense.

    The best way i use my quest pro is oculus link. Because i can push ctrl+numpad2 and get smooth 45fps if use 90hz mode. Very important switch off all sharpening in openxr! Use “no” setting in sharpening. Any of openxr sharpening ruins ocukus sharpening and you got a lot of aliasing and shimmering. I use normal mode sharpening in debug tool and sharpening on in msfs config file. Also i use 100-150 amd sharpening in msfs. Prefer 150, but 100 reduce all shimmering. I have 4090 and use 3200*3400 per eye resolution increasing. This option i use in openxr, because in my opinion its the best. Hope it helps) ps. Im very upset that quest 3 don have open design mode, like quest pro. I dont use any light blockers and this is insane comfort and sometimes you can feel FOV is better than in fact. @@dtrjones A bit over a year actually by now. Launched around October 18th in Europe. I do suppose it's relatively new, but I am pretty disappointed that even today there isn't a single headset even announced that is capable of significantly better wireless PCVR.
      Improvements to contrast, black levels and HDR support would make the largest visual difference at this point, but no one making devices capable of wireless PCVR seems to have any interest in actually providing those.
      Well, PCVR is in a pretty bad state at the moment. It wasn't until the last few months that headsets started coming out with better contrast levels. The only PCVR headset that does seem to have HDR is the Pimax Crystal while some other high-end headsets like the Bigscreen Beyond and Varja Aero don't have it. And going by the fact that for some you still need to buy extra controllers and base stations... well, the minimum for investment for a PCVR headset with good contrast comes down to around $1600.

    Screen door is more obvious exactly because of the pancake lenses, due to the increase in sharpness compared to fresnel lenses, which wash out the image and thereby reduces perceived sharpness and with it the visibility of the space between pixels. A lens itself and not just the screen has a resolution, the max (or minimal) ability to transmit light. It can be compared with a camera and lens, but in reverse.

    Interesting comparison with Pico 4 (which I have). Any particular reason why you are using 78mbs bandwidth and not go full 200 or 400mbs in Virtual Desktop? I ask because I would assume it does affect the graphical fidelity. Also maybe you have time at some point to do some exhaustive tests between using OpenXR Toolkit vs not using it at all while playing with Q3 or Pico4. You mentioned that you were having some CTD lately. I have as well. (since SU13 it seems) I only have Q2 but the sim crashes with or without it. Either from Loading a flight, zooming in and out of world map. Not so much when I'm flying. Slightly more stable when community folder is empty, but crashes do still occur. Hello and thank you for the great video. I have few questions if you dont mind.
    Here is my first question please. Yo check ce dépassement. Apparently, if you go in the Debug Tool, and uncheck dynamic bitrate, you could increase the bitrate to 700-800 with the cable. However, keep in mind, you cant write it in because it is locked. I never tried it before, but apparently, you can write the number somewhere else then copy paste it in the debug tool.
    The second one is about OpemXR Toolkit with Quest 3. Does the fact that the clarity is almost edge to edge make the foveated rendering a bit useless because now we can clearly see the low quality on the sides?
    Thirdly, is the OpenXR Runtime Picker application a replacement to Open Composite app. Do i have to remove it then?
    Thanks, it would be very nice to have your input in that.

    • @SimHangerFS
      @SimHangerFS  Год назад

      Foveated rendering is still available and can be used to reduce overall render size and thus improve performance if you’re struggling to get the performance levels you’re looking for. You do not need Open Composite for OpenXR applications, so you don’t need it for MSFS. (OC is used with OpenVR apps). I normally have my bit rate set between 200-400.

    • @MegaIronica
      @MegaIronica Год назад

      @SimHangerFS thank you for your answer. I beleive 200 mbs for the bitrate could give visible compression artifacts. I did try copy pasting 800 in the debug tool and it worked for me in the Quest 2.
