Language Duel With An Indian Tanzanian Barber (#35)

- During my visit to the Indo-Tanzanian neighborhood of Kisutu in Dar es Salaam, I thought it would be a good time to get my beard trimmed. Since cutting mzungu hair is a unique challenge in Tanzania, I decided to go back to an old friend. Little did I know, I was in for a challenge.

I survived and my beard somehow looks even better than before. This video was originally going to be part of the last one (Meeting the Indian Tanzanian Community), but this guy was such a character that he deserved a separate video. Baadaye, I'll be on the move to a new location in the next one.
💖💖💖
Were ru tell me I'll come
Im from kenya currently residing in canada i miss home man people are more happier there then here
Love your videos.. ❤️ from India🇮🇳
You have a thick accent when you speak english like even your name Tommy, sounds more like rolled r tammi,
try speaking like an english person or neutral mid western accent.. it would be easier for foreign listeners to understand your english,
damn nigga.. you are a true polyglot.. i guess i met my match in an abstract way since am a polymath lol,
if you are in kenya hit me up i can show you my school in kisumu
that barber might be the happiest and most relaxed sober person i’ve ever seen 😳😂
And a rip off
The barber asked you where is my Sister in law was asking you where your spouse is, that’s why he kept asking where you’re from and laughed cuz you didn’t get it.
Ah I had no idea!
Yes I was thinking that too
Oooh, by the way. That's what he meant. I thot I was the one who understood the barber
I was thinking he was trying to sell his sister to him =D
@@OsirisDRa no no... The barber is thinking of sabbatical as his brother, so his wife is barber's sister in law
A bit of cultural info here..When somebody asks you "where is my sister in law" he means either your wife or your girlfriend.. In Tanzania everyone is "ndugu"(brother) once you have had a lengthy interaction with them...So it's normal to ask "Yuko wapi shemeji yangu?"(where is my sister in law?) Try it some day after a long conversation. It's considered polite
Oh a bit of a side note here.. Don't ask it to someone old enough to be your parent that question 🤣 Then it's considered rude😐 You only ask it to someone around your age
@@esriesri Thank you for that, super fascinating the cultural differences!
Ah thanks! One other guy commented something like this above but I was still confused, you cleared it up. In that case I have many, many ndugus in Tanzania
Amazing... did you know this is one of the oldest barber shops in Dar?
I used to go to this exact one as a child. Funnily enough, the stools and mirrors are still the same.!
I had no idea. Cool, I'm guessing the barber changed though!
The barber is wearing a Championship T-Shirt from a Canadian High School hockey team. 🧐 haha
It's like 90% of Indian community in East Africa were from Gujarat
Yes he is Gujarati 100% indian (I am also Gujarati at Ahmedabad)
Correct!
I enjoyed the conversation between sabbatical and Gujarati...I think ..he is the owner of the shop..Laughter relaxes the whole body. Laughter lightens anger's heavy load. ..Both of you are great..
This is such a wholesome video! The scared kid who thought he's a ghost lead me here :)
Enjoyed the lighthearted shop banter.
6:46 the other guy said “we wa buguruni tu” meaning that “your just from Buguruni” which is probably the most ratchet place in Dar🤣🤣🤣.
Useful cultural knowledge!
"You got change?"
"Nope."
Lol 😭 he gets a pass - wholesome video
He did a good job on your beard. It’s even now and the hair lays nice.
The average Gujarati, be it anywhere in the world, has a special relationship with money.
That said, this barber and you shared a spontaneous chemistry that crackled thru the video. I found myself laughing thru much of it. He was extroverted and got you, typically thoughtful, to loosen up.
The $5 you ended up paying was well worth it. And not just for matters hirsute.
Yes I heard that before ...they indeed gave a specific and special relationship with money ....they definitely has a secrets
@@Sthmohtwenty yeah, he was there a year ago and went to the same barber shop then
hahahaha... this video is rocking.. i have enjoyed every piece of it this morning .. it's a more than a comedy.. a brother kukutana na shemeji wake Tanzania
When he talks about a sister in law, he means your wife
You were not overcharged that is the standard price for a shave in the city, you could damage the guy's reputation.
Kwawale munaolalamika jama kapigwa bei, hizo ni bei za kawaida mjini.
Kabisaaa na kanyolewa vzr sana
I used to go to the barbershops almost weekly... $30 each time here in Miami. Until I figured out that buying a machine and learning to do it myself was cheaper.
You have a special gift of putting people at ease! Great beard trim, looks very smart.
Great video, the title scared the shit out of me 🤣🤣🤣
That barber wants his cut from youtube. Xb
He's a master negotiator
@@SabbaticalTommy uje kigamboni utembee
Hair cut costs $30 to 40 USD in San Francisco USA , 4 USD including tip$ for 15 minutes beard trim is not that bad for American tourist in Tanzania . Like most things in Africa , you were charged as tourist not as Tanzanian.
2 USD tips i gave a barber for 0.80 USD or 80 cents hair cut when i was staying at Jaromax Palace hotel near Ubongo Bus Terminal in DAR last year. The barber spent about half hour for my Elvis look a like long hair , i feel bad when he gave me the 80 CENTS BILL or .80 USD for his hard work.
Most Africans have curly short hairs but the barber had to work harder for my wavy long hair and he deserve the 2 USD tip .
Am glad i made the barber ✌ ✌ 😁😁VERY HAPPY with the TWO BUCKS tip , i paid him 3 George Washingtons greens.
Looking forward to be back at his hair shop on my second visit of DAR next year.✌✌✌
You r right
You sound like the type man I wanna marry. I WANNA KNOW MORE.I am in the caribbean.
@@outofthisworld4437 Looking forward to visit Jamaica ,Haiti , Dominican Republic Puerto Rico or Cuba for my next vacation . I ll take any suggestions ,am not sure there are so many islands and port in the Caribbean …..
@@hi_lo574 Definitely, Jamaica 🇯🇲.I will show you around the country. Don't get me wrong others are great too, here is just better & if you do decide to go to Cuba sometime next year -please let me know as I have always wanted to visit.
@@outofthisworld4437 Thank You .I heard there is no Uber in Jamaica. That's awesome , very nice of you . I heard this place Negril ? but i have no clue of how far from the Airport . I ll let you know when am ready to book my flight. I love that name Ebony Banks , sound exotic and remind me of the Tall 5'10" Tyra Banks the famous actress
Well... you didn't ask him for permission... so there you go :)
However, the giggling-while-you're-holding-a-razor-to-someone's-neck part was definitely the riskiest part!
"It burns kidogo. I have fire." I laughed so much hearing this.
You always ask the price after getting the service... what is wrong with you? You have no negotiating leverage at that point.
He meant "I'm a rock city boy" not "I'm not a city boy" LMAO

I love that tommy goes with the mochichi airstyle
Thank You for sharing these videos with us!
lam from est africa l like your oll videos please keep going breather
I am impress, you speak Portuguese, Russian and Swahili - wow. What else you speak man?
Damn this is nostalgic... Asante sana bossi dar is a beautiful city to live in I must say people are very sweet and kind
your videos are so interesting am surprised you dont have much more views and subscribers.maybe you need to market more.
Hey its me again... The barbar shop u went to i used to get my hair cut from there and the most amazing thing is the person who cut ur hair is the same man... I am suffering from alopacia areata so I used to get my haircut from one person as he knew my problem...
he did a really nice job on your beard though, thoughtful and skillful . do you feel he charged you more because you are a tourist?
Wow you also speak French? You had a good accent pronouncing it!
Yeah weirdly he learned in Quebec too. Sounds French though.
The barber was chill
Great video love the humour. Although I I think the barber may be offended by the title.
I did tell him it was going on camera 😂 He's fine with it
Really hope to meet u soon
I went to this barber shop. He is amazing. I did my hair cut and clean shave.
I LIKE YOUR TRIP TANZANIA
😅😂……one slick barber!
Indian from Mwanza only in Tanzania
😅😅😅 kweli kabisa
Ive been trying to reach out to you i watch your vlogs daily
On Instagram?
The Barber was very witty Sarcastic .He was asking about your wife when he asked where is "my sister-in-law"? You didnot understand his wit. He kept the balance and did not give your change back was dishonest.Shame he was on camera but he did not care about his reputation.
Yes u write there is no any maner
Standard price buddy
Well the barber wanted his $ cut up front for the youtube content.....I think that is fair, Sabbatical is a cheap millennial.
This video is a vibe!!
Ok. That totally pissed me off. He TOTALLY ripped you off, and I wish I knew the name and location of that Barber shop so I NEVER go there. The shop I go to (granted its not as fancy as that one) would only charge you 1000/= for a beard trimming and 2000/= for a Haircut, and they do a very good job. Thanks for sharing though! 👊😎
Hahahaha, are you taking about local barbershop or a barbershop? If your talking about local then your almost right but if your talking of barber shop of city centre then he was not over charged usually they charge start from 10,000/= to 30,000/=
@@kgonlinetz.5049 I was referring to local. But still, 10000/= for a beard trimming in the city?
@@kenbina thats the price brother
Thats the price in town
He tipped 2000 because the barber did an amazing job and was very polite, respectful and with an awesome sense of humor.
Am from Europe and here, we tip. When the barber slapped him on the shoulder I thought: "What a jerk! I love this guy!"
Here we say: He took his money in a gentle-forceful way. That requires skill and very good communication skills. Only a pro can do that.
Wawe thanks for the video, I used to go to this barbershop when I was living in Dar between 2012 and 2017. The price was 5000 TZ shilling . The guy in yellow shirt used to cut my hair and I remember how he can cut your hair and speak on the phone at the same time lol
Unapendeza LOL yeah, I think you recorded them so they want a little bit of the adsense.
he's such a good sport with the sister in law confusion
Did you ask how much a beard trim costs before you actually had the trim?
He will know wen I find him
When something is burning like a spray we say INAWAKA MOTO

04:34 Now he's talking like a Gujarati..
Muhindi anajuwa kukata ndevu za mzungu vizuri sana umependeza sana
Bros just hanging out being bros.
Why do I get the notion the barber is flirting with him @4:04 when he insinuates .."kuna mtu wa joto hapa"..
Or maybe it's a Tanzanian thing.. 😂
I thot at 0.01second the lady was saying "anajichukua video mzungu"- which meant you are taking video of your self..
Hi muzungu,Waw enjoy in kariako my Barber shop haha
How did you learn Swahili? Did you know before you came to Africa?
🇺🇸🇺🇦❤🤍💙💛🌹🇮🇱🤍💙
I like the video very much
Wallah nimecheka hatar 🤣🤣🤣
This barber is a Gujarati, and they are very business-oriented people and a lot of factories all over India as well as in Africa own by them. If he would have been a Bengali, I am sure ur haircut would have been a free one, because you have the same anatomy (beard, throat, cheeks etc.) as they do have...lol.
"Sister-in-law"means your wife man. We Indians make quick relations. For example my friend's father is instantly my uncle.
US Africans we do the same, not only indians.
@@fegow-farmland8399 glad to learn that but I felt like he couldn't get it instantly.
Gujaratis are born businessmen.. The money extractors.. Put a Gujarati in any business, his gonna make a lot of money.
I would request to you, please make one special video for Gujarati daispora, please going to Gujarati people House
2:18 sukuma nutz!!!!!
He’s saying sister in law because he’s referring to you as his brother and that makes your wife his sister in law

title is misleading but again he shouldnt have charged you that much for trimming unless you were cool with it
Yeah I just decided to change the title. He clearly overcharged but I'll let it slide
@@SabbaticalTommy i hate it when people in my country try to take advantage of foreigners thinking its ok to charge them more because they are rich! even though not all the people are like that man
@@SabbaticalTommy well, some people are still offended by the new title. It’s crazy how people are offended no matter what, before the title they’re telling you you’re overcharged, after the change some are telling you he did not overcharge you. It’s like you just created a parallel universe
@@SabbaticalTommy no man I'm a regular customer there and those are the prices, if you wanted your beard cut around 3000 then there are few local barbar shops in rural area but that's the standard price in town infact many barbers in town charge 12000 and some in masaki charge 20000 so that's the reality man
