In my opinion this is what Halo 5 need for its campaign. Open scale battlefields that doesn't limit you to a tower climbing arena, classic art and gameplay style mixing with the new, a better story that doesn't contradict the marketing campaigns with well developed characters, and a better cliff hanger ending with an emotional reunion with the Arbiter and the Master Chief.

Halo Wars 2 keeps everything Halo Wars 1 did correctly, and gave everything an appropriate upgrade.
I like how they redesigned some old niche units and made them more useful. I love how lots of missions were on shoestring budgets, to force players to be very selective in which units they used. And I love the quips and one-liners.

while the campaign ending was abrupt and "cliff-hangy", the way I interpreted it being left kind of open-ended with Cutter and Atriox looking at their tactical maps and planning for new missions, is that you can immediately jump into Skirmish or Multiplayer and continue fighting and it feels like your continuing the campaign to a degree. It does take a little stretch of the imagination, but its certainly an interesting way to look at it.

Halo Wars 2 is now one of my favorite games. I just love it, especially the unit dialogue. My favorite line from the units is from the marines. I sent them to fight a large unit, and one said, "Remeber Harvest men, make me proud," like it was their final stand. That's what I love about Halo Wars 2, it adds character to such little things, like the unit dialogue, if you follow your troops around, you'll hear them talking to each other, laughing, and acting like real people. It's amazing.

I wrote a review for this game recently as thankfully I managed to get a hold of the ultimate edition as a pre-order. I must say that, despite the shorter than hoped story and pain in the ass ending, I really really like this game. The art style is an excellent combination of the old and new styles, the banished in particular look absolutely fantastic and I love the style of the banished bases. The music is excellent (though, of course, this is entirely subjective) and it really goes well with what is happening in game, especially in the story missions and cut scenes whilst the menu music really had that halo feel to it, though there are a few annoying sound glitches. The gameplay is fun and deep enough to be interesting for a good period of time at once but not so in depth that it's impossible to play on consoles (having played on both, don't bother getting it exclusively for PC as it still needs some tweaking on that platform). The graphic quality is a huge improvement, but not quite what I'd hoped for a game in this console generation, however, the particle effects and unit animations are superb and make the game look as flashy as it is fun when two huge armies collide, with very few frame drops on console I'm glad to say. The multi-player is consistent and stable (I know right, shocker) and in my 20+ games so far, I've had one disconnect due to an electrical grid failure, not the game servers. Not only that, but the multi-player is fun! Really fun! It has several tactical elements to it that I didn't quite expect and the addition of several new units (blisterbacks are glorious and nobody can convince me otherwise) really adds some flavour to the game though I will say I'm sad to see the cobra go, I loved that thing. The story itself had some great moments and I really liked the characters (gotta love Alice-130 man, she's awesome) HOWEVER I think the decision to deliver a large chunk of the story in "mission briefing" loading screens was a poor one, especially since some of the voice acting was very sub-par. Of course, the cut scenes are all excellent and Blur has once again done a wonderful job.
Now for the big issue everyone is crying about, Blitz. Blitz, despite what act man said, isn't broken or pay to win, after my own research, I have found that whilst the jump in power of level 1-6 cards is enormous, after that, there is barely any incremental increase in power as for any noticeable advantage to occur, a comparison of level 10 and 16 units had to take place. Since the general increase levels out almost completely at level 6, I believe after a short period of time most players, including those that don't buy anything, will have level 6 cards and be on almost a completely even playing field, especially since its so easy to get packs and fill your card collection.
The campaign in particular had one of the best period halo period missions period I have played in a very very long time. Ho-lee-shit that last mission was glorious. 4 enemy scarabs, infinite units and resources with a 50% increased ability cool down? Yes fucking please! I've played that mission alone 3 times and with a friend 4 times on each difficulty and it is absolutely brilliant fun. No doubt about it.
Overall, the game is a lot of fun and a huge step in the right direction, it's easy to get into for new rts players and deep enough for players who have "dabbled" in rts games before to be entertained throughout, though I wouldn't say it's going to stand up to the expectations of a hardcore rts gamer, as it doesn't provide that complexity. In its current state, I give it a 7/10 however I think once some of the sound glitches are fixed, the control precision is tweaked and there are more people playing, the game will be a definite 8/10. Thanks for reading ;)

I have to say, i'm very happy for you to adress the soundtrack, as a musician, one of the musics that inspired me to study music and play music was the Halo soundtrack, and something funny happened today, well, when i bought the MCC, i put in on my xbox, installed and opened, and the music in the menu start to flow from the speakers, and i will never forget this moment, because my mother stopped everything and said: This gregorian chant is beautifull, and my mother never did that, and now, when i opened the game, and that piano and violin solo at the beginning, she said: What is this music? It is really good, i think that shows how powerfull halo music is and at least, the menu music represent something, that moment when you said, this game is going to be awesome, i didnt finished, i didnt reach that moment when i was in halo 2 in the first arbiter mission when he has to pick up a ghost and chase the other elite, and that music starts to play, at the time, i had to pause, increase the volume of my tv because the music was so awesome, that i had to do this, really hope for this soundtrack to be memorable.

Here's a little food for thought (if you haven't thought of it already). The ending cut scene that shows a guardian, my thinking is that this ties into halo 5's last cut scene that shows Cortana turning on a halo ring where Halo Wars 2 ends slightly before halo 5 ends, bringing them into alignment with each other. My guessing is that in Halo 6 Red Team, Blue Team, Team Osiris, The Arbiter's forces, The Spirit of Fire's and Infinity's crews will go into an all out war with Cortana's forces, The Banished and whatever is left of the Covenant with a possible journey to Halo wars 2's ark to destroy it (similar to Halo 3).
Although this would be too much for one game so there will be more sequels for 343i to make (and more money for Microsoft), but we'll see.

This game did what Halo 4 and Halo 5 couldn’t, had an amazing story with amazing characters.
Atriox a real enemy, menacing, intimidating, powerful and with a purpose. Halo Wars feels like Halo, art style, tone and environment feels like halo again. Red Team is such a bad ass team, Jerome 092 in particular as my name may suggest being a hard core fan of him is amazing, it could easily replace the chief and be the next generations spartan. Captain cutter is a real captain military, not some push over like Lasky who seems lazy and invokes little to no respect, or Rio who was just a joke. Elizabeth is great, not as cool as Bungie Cortana, but a worthy AI companion.
Only issues for me on campaign was gameplay, it wasn’t as enjoyable as halo wars 1, it wasn’t as clear as the first one with the units, the Rock Paper Scissors balance was off, the invisibility of units was really frustrating, passing by a whole base that is invisible and not being able to attack it while getting attack because you don’t have units to reveal them was frustrating. Thats really it.
The story was amazing and it made sense, after the Covenant Human war, obviously some other power would rise kinda like WW2 and the cold war with the US and Soviet union, they try that in h4 with Jul but we all know how that ended. But Atriox makes sense, he rise to power by getting forerunner technology, making allies with rebel Elites. His making his own Covenant, rebuilding. That should has been the story after Halo 3. Forget about forerunners being alive after 100,000 years, they were suppose to be a
Mystery, ancient. Leave them like that. Atriox is the real new threat. Make Spartans II the real Spartans, seems like now days anyone can be one, Buck was an ODST , Lock was a simple soldier now you’re telling me he hunts Spartans? Where was he during the great war? He didn’t warn his place as a protagonist, neither did Osiris team, maybe Buck being an Odst that survive Reach if anyone.
Cutscenes were nothing short of spectacular, if it was 2 hrs long and was in movie theaters I would gladly pay to watch it. Amazing cutscenes.
Graphics in general were somewhat poor, for an 8 year gap between halo wars 1 and 2 is not really that much of an improvement but is not a major thing that can ruin the game, just prefer the graphic style of the first one better to be honest.
Overall a great game and a good Halo game. Much needed refreshing story from the shit 343 has bring with h4 and h5.

I agree. Halo Wars 1 only actually had 2 multiplayer playlists: deathmatch or standard. From there it broke down from 1v1 up to 3v3 of course, but that's it. And as much as I enjoyed the DLC playlists, they released after the game died so no one played them.
And yet I loved the ever loving shit out of Halo Wars

My hopes for HW2 were incredibly high from the trailers and after the first cutscene I immediately knew the campaign was going to be a masterpiece. One of the best sequel intros in any game.
Honestly they had me hooked from the first frame of the first cutscene, when I saw that the Spirit of Fire's iconic and unique design hadn't been replaced by a boring metal rectangle like what 343 did with the Forward Unto Dawn. I saw respect paid to the classic art style, writing style, and music, while still adding a modern flair to it.
The Banished as a faction and the old UNSC vehicles and tech upgraded to modern UNSC standards by Isabel are also a perfect example of how to reuse things that are literal decades old and farm nostalgia without just being lazy and reusing them 1 to 1 like most companies do.

  • @MamaWantsWafflesHub

I feel like 343's problem as of late is that they seem to be always setting up a sequel, thus we have 2 games in a row ending in a cliffhanger. I really hope this trend stops soon. Also make the games longer! at least reach the 10 hour mark or something.

Hey, old time halo fan here.
The last Halo I really enjoyed was Halo Reach.
I played the Beta for Halo wars 2 as I absolutely loved the first one.
Much of the game was similar to the first one but I don't mind that.
I think if they took the same approach to Halo 6 I might consider buying the game. It has been a few months i'v been watching these videos and I pretty much agree with everything said in the videos you have made reviewing all the Halo games.
This to me seems like a step in the right direction. Let's hope they stay on course.
I believe Halo 6 will truly be the last hope for the old Halo community. Many of my Halo friends I played everyday on Halo with back in the day said they will never buy another game by 343i. I understand that. Then there is people like me, I'm willing to give it one more chance. This defiantly makes me hopeful for a better Halo than Halo 5.

Just rewatching the vid 4 years later and they fixed all the problems mentioned but I had to add, to this day I wish that they would add an extra UNSC Infantry Unit. Although the marines are better than the grunts; all the other Banished infantry units are better than their UNSC counterparts.
Maybe they could add Machine Gun Marines to the Barracks, so each unit has two marines one holding ammunition and the other using a saw or Halo 2 mounted machine gun only running around with it. And you need to either set them down prone like you would with the Kodiak or have them in a garrison.

4 years, 4 long years, yet not much has changed in game modes, support has ended for a while now, the game still has a small yet active community, but is ignored by the developers that made it. Here we are in an unfinished game that has so much potential wasted because the developers care so little anymore. What a waste of resources if they're going to make a game with potential and abandon it. Rest in peace Halo Wars 2, a great game made by a terrible company, only used to make good villains for the next FPS in line and to be forgotten by most.

I'd like to see a Combat Evolved type spin off featuring that AI and one of the Spartans from the campaign story. Would be a nice way to have a decent one off game vs the banished in some BOOTS ON THE GROUND combat, and tie it in to the main game of halo wars. Except instead of Halo:CE being set on the ring, this could be set on the ark. Then we could just duke it out with the banished and forget about the rest of the galaxy and the AI stuff.
Like that cut-scene where she cuts the ship in half. But a whole game of that. I think both Halo wars, 2 especially, did much better than they thought they would, so I expect we'll see another game soon.

I absolutely love the codex in the game, I love and appreciate that someone actually /cared/ enough about the lore to talk about these things, and make these ideas about the universe canon. But god dammit, SHOW DON'T TELL! At least half of the huge codex should have actually been shown in the campaign instead of just talked about as an after thought in the in-game wiki. Nevertheless I'm glad it exists as opposed to nothing because without it the game would have a lot less life. But still, it feels like we're reading the dev team's screen writing material that's written on all the boards in the office before they decide if something is worth animating or not. I would have loved to have seen the efficiency of Atriox's war machine in action, not just talked about in a bunch of text.
That's one of the more interesting parts - there's a lot of lore written about Atriox's way of leading the Banished and how it differs from both Covenant and Brute culture. He's much more intelligent than the average brute, and actually has foresight and the capacity to manipulate the ego of his enemies. Where traditional brute warchiefs would kill off any chieftains that got out of line or failed, Atriox punishes them by demoting them to Grunt Squad leaders, so they can learn to work with others again on the front lines and earn a newfound appreciation for the hard work of peons. Sometimes traditional Brutes would also force the demoted officers to fight in 1v1 arena combat to prove who of the two was worth keeping. This too was put to an end, and disputes between rival brutes is handled more peacefully - even the worst of the worst ultimately just end up staying as grunt leaders.
NONE OF THIS IS SHOWN IN THE ACTUAL GAME'S STORY. Not even later in the Banished campaign expansion. We never get to see how Atriox really is a smarter kind of Brute. It's like they lay out the foundation for him to be one of the coolest characters to break the mold, but they don't take the extra step to make it real. It's like the whole game we're just looking at Atriox's shadow. His incredible, intimidating shadow. We never see him for what he's hyped up as.

That's due to HW2 being not just a PC game, but a console one to boot. What, you want to throw in micro mechanics into a game that uses a controller? Good luck with that. And if you want to add features for the PC version, but you hold them back from the console version...well, what's the point then?
That's one of the things that made Halo Wars so memorable and successful on console- it's accessible. You don't need to be a Korean pro StarCraft player to enjoy this game, and you never will need to. The lack of features may be a weakness, but they work in HW2's favor as well.

I daresay Forge is even more badass than Johnson. He killed an ARBITER 1v1 and went toe to toe with a SPARTAN in a fight. I love Johnson but it's hard to pick between him and Forge. I really wanted to cry when Forge sacrificed himself though, same with when Johnson was killed. If Forge had another 2 games to build him up more then his death may have come even closer to being as impactful as Johnson's.

It took me a long time to play halo wars 2. The first game was actually my introduction to halo and was the reason I played the FPS halo games and now I’ve read all the books and almost exclusively play halo. So you could say I’m a big fan of the franchise and even I didn’t get halo wars 2 until just a few weeks ago. When the blitz mode was revealed I was so disgusted and disappointed that I never bothered getting the game. Now after playing it wow what a good game I’m sad I didn’t play sooner. But 4 things that bugged me are the AI leader powers during campaign. On higher difficulty it feels like they spam them and in some cases can take out half your army in one strike and you have virtually no defence against them. I would have also liked more cutscenes between missions even if they were short. Like instead of the in game footage some more blur scenes would have been great to both flesh out the characters or show action scenes to get me pumped. Instead I feel like I’m watching the megablok figures fight. Also the static ID faces during in game dialogue. I know the first game had the faces animated and now that animation looks dated but it helps add realism to the experience. Lastly the story starts so strong it’s so sad it never really goes anywhere and doesn’t have a resolution. I really want to read a halo wars book to see what happens it’s actually annoying. Non of these are huge problems but they could have been fixed to make this game a 10/10 console RTS

Halo Wars 2's simplicity is why it works so well on console. If you contstantly had to go back to base to manage you're workers it would Awaken a Nightmare, so to speak. You don't have to micromanage your base nearly as much as you do compared to other RTS games. Note, this is not a bad thing, I actually enjoyed Halo Wars 2 a lot and a return to more traditional Halo art is a much appreciated change. The story was good and fun.

The Act Man, IMO, this game's art style appeals to my eyes only because it looks pretty good (obviously), but the only thing that makes this match acceptable for me is the lore. If it was Halo 6, I wouldn't like it too look like that, but I'd like it to look very closely too it. In my eyes, this is looking like a 80% old art style, 20% new art style match, which would be unacceptable and unfair for a main Halo game title. IMO, I shall look like a 60% old art style, 40% new art style match (when designing the Covenant/Banished and UNSC art design) with both Builders/Lifeworkers art design and Warrior-Servants art design (50%/50%). Finally, would you like to see a level editor in Halo Wars 2 or in a Halo Wars potential sequel? I would name it Forge's Legacy.
Oh, I just forgot... your channel is awesome, Act Man, keep it up!

    • @KAISERaw17
      @KAISERaw17 7 лет назад +4

Alex z tej Ark was severely damaged, not destroyed. The Banished apparently grew to large status, having a small fleet, big army, after the end of Halo 3. Before that it was a small renegade group, dangerous and out right defiant to the Covenant, but not a huge army. Also the Covenant wanted to pursue the "Great Journey" over everything.

    • @futbolluva
      @futbolluva 7 лет назад +10

yeah I understand what you mean. After all, Truth was willing to appoint a mother fucking Arbiter to deal with a couple heretics on a remote forerunner installation, but a rival and openly belligerent faction is ignored? Da faq? It makes no sense whatsoever. The Covenant's might was absolute before the Great Schism, this whole Banished stuff is nonsense.
That being said, I am 110% willing to look the other way on this one simply due to the glorious art style returning and someone finally depicting elites and brutes in a respectable way again.

I think the idea of the banished is kinda dumb too. I wouldn't have a problem with them existing if they weren't what they were. Basically the same thing as the covenant and just a new version of the covenant so we had a reason in the lore to fight them again.
