This was a VERY GOOD explanation of dryer maintenance. I've cleaned gas dryers with the lint catch located at bottom of opening for loading clothes. When my neighbor was throwing out a dryer like you worked on, but gas, I grabbed it to take apart. Was a good learning experience. I would use a length of rubber hose, 3/4 inch car heater hose to reach into dryer to vacuum it out, this worked well for periodic maintenance. One should ALWAYS clean lint trap after each use.
Awesome video. Cleaning out a maytag gas dryer that isn't drying everything completely. Just needed to see how to take everything apart to clean all the lint out.

Yes, Dryer Model #11096281100. In this video, you show the dryer lint screen shoot, coming out after removing the 2 screws on top under the screen door and the 4 screws at the bottom on the shoot. I had to remove the front panel, the drum and remove the 4 screws at the top of the dryer bulkhead, pull the bulkhead forward in order to remove the outlet shoot. Thank You

Thank you for posting this. You did an excellent job explaining completely and even showing exactly what you were doing close up. This is exactly what I wanted to know how to do to my old dryer. And guess what? The dryer in this video is my dryer too!! Made it even easier to understand and follow. My dryer had a lot more lint than the one in this video! Thanks again. Hoping this will help my old dryer last another twenty years. Fingers crossed 🤞

I've been troubleshooting and repairing my old Sears Kenmore gas dryer for almost 25 years now and I found that the burner valve solenoid coils can become weak over time. When this occurs there is not enough magnetism generated to hold the valve open and it will shut off. Just recently I had the flame ignite, burn for about a half minute, then shut off. I suspected the solenoid coils again; however, I had just replaced these only about five years ago. Turns out that the exhaust vent was completely blocked at the louvers outside the house. I removed the wad from the vent and now my dryer is back in service. Thank God I found this blockage and thanks to the manufacturer designed this machine to have temperature sensors in the dryers internal exhaust duct to monitor the temperature and shut down the machine if they sense a temperature above normal. We typically clean the lint screen; however, I had recently threw a bunch of burlap into the dryer after having washed it and I never experienced more of a mess than what this material made. I cleaned the lint screen and the next time I ran the dryer with normal fabrics in it is when the trouble began. A word of advise: don't run burlap in your machines. If you have the flame got out after a a short time, first check your vent for clogs as I had. You'll save a lot of time and money if that is the root of the problem.

As a single mother, I can not afford to hire someone to service my dryer. So, I came across your video, and even though the lint was not the reason behind my dryer not working, I figured, since I had it apart already, it wouldn't hurt to clean that out too. Turns out that this (used) dryer was SOOOOO Clogged with I don't know what.... including a pencil (go figure), that I can't believe I didn't have a fire! The bottom hole where everything settles was completely blocked! So, thank you so much for this video. I would never have known to clean this out, so thank you!!!! I hoping to find the reason behind no heat! Hopefully your other videos can help me with that! Wish me luck! Thank you so much!!!! Glad this video was easy to follow along!
Deanna Davis, Probably the exact same thing happened to my drier the other day. The lint blocked the wheel from turning as well and as a result it blew its high temperature safety thermostat that's at the top of my long heating element. The video I saw that walked me through testing all the different parts with a Ohms Meter said if the safety thermostat blows to go ahead and replace the lower operating thermostat also because it could have been damaged. My local appliance parts store sells them as a combo package. Good luck!
Many thanks for this video as it helped me avoid a service call of over $200! I am very grateful and proud that I could do this. I did not even know what a ratchet was before.
I'm a 51 year old woman that would like to say thank you so much for taking the time to make this video! I appreciate you so much! great video very thorough. Thanks for not starting the demo after the back panel was removed like some other video channels. I needed to see you remove the two two screws under the lint trap. Thanks
I did it! Old Whirlpool Dryer! Took me all day, but plugged it back in and it worked! Hallelujah! Thank you so much for this thoroughly detailed how to video!!!
Ordinarily, "metal screws" are used for this type of application. These metal screws have been designed and made specifically for use with metal rather than wood or plastic. These screws ordinarily have an X or "cross" pattern on the head, as opposed to older screws that have a slot cut in a straight line across the head. These machine screws, with their so-called Phillips head, can be loosened with a Phillips screwdriver. (The older screws use a "flat head" screwdriver.) Sometimes machine screws may have a second way of being turned, if they have a "hex-head"... This is when the head of the screw, instead of being round, is a six-sided head similar to (though smaller than most) lag bolts or other heavy-duty bolts or screws. When the machine screw has a hex head along with the Phillips cross, the screw can be tightened or loosened (righty-tighty or lefty-loosie in the US) with either a Phillips screwdriver or a hex-head driver that is appropriately sized for the screw that has been used. Phillips screwdrivers come in various sizes to work better with differently sized screws, but most with work with most Phillips screws... sometimes poorly, if the discrepancy between the screwdriver and the screw is too great. This "most work with most" is NOT true for hex drivers, however. You need the proper sized head on your driver to fit closely on the head of the screw. Otherwise, you'll either not be able to use it at all, or run the risk of stripping the corners off of the screw, which renders it much more difficult to remove or later replace.
I never post comments, but THIS was super super helpful! We live qn hour and half from any place that offers a repairman. So doing this when I get home. My roommate's cat dragged some of our towels into the litter box and instead of shaking them out first he just threw them in the wash. Now our dryer is full of cat litter dust...
This just saved me a lot of money. Our 15 yo Kenmore need 3 cycles to dry a load. I cleaned the duct work to the outside but it didn't seem to make much difference. Was looking at a replacement when I found your vid. Followed your steps and discovered a completely plugged housing. Start to finish less than an hour. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the video. You helped me a lot. However, you forgot to mention that the felt on the drum needs to ride over the metal. If any part is tucked under, the drum will not spin correctly. This was my problem. It took a little searching on youtube, but I found the solution. You might want to update your video to reflect this. It could cause people a lot of frustration. Anyhow, the rest of your video was outstanding. Thanks.
Great video! My favorite part was digging through the junk in the air chute although I was disappointed no Barbie shoes LOL. I will get after my drawer tomorrow. Thanks so much for explaining so completely.
Thank you. I'm about to go clean my dryer and I'm going to do a much better job now. I wouldn't have even considered opening the front and you didn't convince me until I saw the motor. The pulley thing kind of scares me, but I'll take a picture or 5 to help. Something tells me my dryer is going to be bad. Very bad. Thanks again!
I feel exactly the same way! The whole drum-pully & lid harness thing are a bit intimidating to me & a deterrent. But after seeing that filthy motor PLUS reading someone's review about long hair wrapped around the wheels it's getting me to want to go for it!
Just an outstanding job on dryer maintenance. Thank You for taking the time to make this video. I will begin doing my dryer today using your information to do a complete job. Excellent!
This was very helpful to me. After removing the back I found I had a build up of lint in the chute and clumped lint in blower fan. Cleaning this out fixed the vibration problem but I still had a thump-thump each rotation of the drum. Taking apart the front, I discovered a small amount of compressed lint in the roller groove which hit each roller every rotation. I scraped it out with a butter knife and reassembled. Thumping is now gone and unit runs smoothly. Thank you for this video as it gave me the confidence to disassemble my dryer and save an expensive service call.
Great job! My dryer is now working great and I couldn't have fixed it without you! My only snag were a few small differences in my dryer, but nothing I couldn't figure out. Just wanted to say thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's a lot of debris! I always tell my family to empty pockets before tossing laundry. Have a wire vent brush, mask and vacuum ready for clean up. I thoroughly cleaned mine after 16 years. Man, half of the duct is covered. Scary fire hazard. Nice video.
You Saved me! Dryer stopped drying and your Wonderful Video allowed grandma to take apart my dryer with no help and clean all that lint out + DRYER sheets! How can they get thru? Thank You! I would have believed I needed a new dryer!.... PS. No More dryer sheets! Gonna use those woolen balls from now on....and I tested my screen like you showed us. Totally clogged with dryer sheet fabric softener. Don't think my dryer worked this good brand new!
Ok, question.. How important is all the foam-felt trim around the fan, the foam-felt trim around the vent w the holes, and the foam-felt trim around the oblong edges of the 'can'?? ..Cuz I just sucked it all off w the vacuum. It was falling apart anyway. Help...
I've watched a lot of good videos on how to clean the dryer venting, but none showed or mentioned cleaning the blower motor which I have found also needs cleaned. Fortunately, the blower motor is accessible behind the panel at the bottom front of my Whirlpool Cabrio dryer. I use an old toothbrush to clean the blades of the blower motor. Thanks for addressing this.
Great vid helped me gut out this whirlpool dryer, clean it right out to like new. One of the drum roller wheels was jammed and to my surprise it was full of long hair, the other one was also, I popped them off and with some tweezers got every last strand of hair out. Actually long hair is in the built in vac and seems to show up all over the house and its not from a shaggy dog. We have long haired females in the house, I showed them what happened and they will be more diligent with the hairbrush. Excellent job with your video cant thank you enough, I've always been allergic to appliance repairs, not so with motor vehicles, go figure!
I have a1988 Kenmore dryer similar to the one you demonstrated with. The internal sheet metal duct won't come out since there's a spot welded panel along the top of the back. Any suggestions?
This was a really well done video thanks! Do you happen to have one like this showing a dryer with a 'front of drum' lint filter? PS: My filter is the style where you just wipe out the lint. You don't have to pull it out unless you want to get way down inside underneath it. Old Hotpoint electric.
I'm still trying to figure out what that little pressure differential things does. I used to have a dryer just like that. Had it apart a few times. I think mine was much older, tho, it was a "Wrinkle Guard 1", lol. Got it from a used appliance place. The door cables had been replaced with clothesline rope, and they were too short. I picked up cables at Sears and fixed that. After a while it stopped heating. The leads at the element had spiced in low quality wire with automotive butt connectors connecting them to the factory wiring harness. The leads literally burnt off. I spliced in high temperature fiberglass coated wire to fix that. I put a new belt in it once, not because it broke, but because a friend's broke and I had to take mine apart to figure out how to route the belt. So I figured why not put a new belt in? The top filter did not have a lid like that one, it just dropped in. The factory handle screws were missing and somebody put in long sheet metal screws or something like that, rofl. When I got rid of it, it still worked. The only problem was the drum supports needed work. Sometimes the drum wouldn't turn, so to get it to work all you had to do was manually turn the drum a little, then quick start it and it ran fine. ;) I would have fixed it, but my washer had sprung a gasket leak in the gear box. The oil leaked out all over. It still ran, but I was lazy and figured it would still keep running, but it turns out that it really needed to have a full gearbox. Gears need oil? Go figure, lol. It made it a couple years then the gearbox stripped out. :( Sooo, I bought a new washer and figured I'd get a dryer and get the whole "set".
The inlet grill on my five year old Maytag is very corroded and jagged and discolored. I have never smelled smoke. Everything I have looked up says nothing about how I should handle this... Can you give me any advice. Thank you.

This helped greatly including the tip about tipping the dryer to remove the duct. Found tons of lint and dirt in the dryer as well as the dryer vent. I will be doing this much more often! My dryer is drying clothes again in a normal amount of time!
My dryer is a Maytag, so it's a few years older than this. When I took the lint bucket out, there was some kind of harness up near the top that came out with it. I'm not sure where it attaches. It's about 6" long and came out when I pulled the top of the lint bucket out. It may go in where the screws to the top of the lint screen are but I'm not sure. Any help?

what is the name of the tool us3d to remove the screws. Also what is the name of the screw
Ordinarily, "metal screws" are used for this type of application. These metal screws have been designed and made specifically for use with metal rather than wood or plastic.

Hi , on the seal , can you use a regular window foam seal to seal the duct vent ?
Great instructions, I followed step by step and now my dryer is working like it's brand new!!!
Thanks so much!!
Nice video.
Thanks my hubby had a stroke so I needed to learn to do this
Sorry to here hubby had a stroke..hope he is doing better now
He has great sound effects like “shaaa coouuhh”
Excellent excellent video you just saved me from buying a new dryer! Thank you sir!
Excellent and very thorough video . Thank you.
Thk you for that tip on cleaning the lint filter👍👍
You Saved me! Dryer stopped drying and your Wonderful Video allowed grandma to take apart my dryer with no help and clean all that lint out + DRYER sheets! How can they get thru? Thank You! I would have believed I needed a new dryer!.... PS. No More dryer sheets! Gonna use those woolen balls from now on....and I tested my screen like you showed us. Totally clogged with dryer sheet fabric softener. Don't think my dryer worked this good brand new!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, really clear to understand and very very helpful!
Thank you so much for making this video!!! You answered all my questions and allowing me to feel confident throughout the process
Take that sumbich outside and power wash it
Ok, question..
How important is all the foam-felt trim around the fan, the foam-felt trim around the vent w the holes, and the foam-felt trim around the oblong edges of the 'can'?? ..Cuz I just sucked it all off w the vacuum. It was falling apart anyway.
Help...
Pen dropped in the lint compartment. Your video was a lifeaaver. Thanks a million!!!
Compressed air cleans the wooley buggers out likety split!
Why is there a 3/4" -1" hole @ the top of the heater element duct?
Sometimes the drum wouldn't turn, so to get it to work all you had to do was manually turn the drum a little, then quick start it and it ran fine. ;)
I would have fixed it, but my washer had sprung a gasket leak in the gear box. The oil leaked out all over. It still ran, but I was lazy and figured it would still keep running, but it turns out that it really needed to have a full gearbox. Gears need oil? Go figure, lol. It made it a couple years then the gearbox stripped out. :(
Sooo, I bought a new washer and figured I'd get a dryer and get the whole "set".
Your video just saved me about $300 bucks!! Thank you!!!
great demo. can you show us other dryer brands ? thanks
Why do you invent dryers with these problems. I've had dryers before, I just set dial for how long, and start. That's what I want!
The inlet grill on my five year old Maytag is very corroded and jagged and discolored. I have never smelled smoke. Everything I have looked up says nothing about how I should handle this... Can you give me any advice. Thank you.
Great vid! I started out thinking "this guy takes forever to get started." I ended up knowing he not only tells you how to do it, but WHY you need to do it. and explaining the locations of the temp switch and circuit fuse is onemore thing that makes Blake impressive.
Inside the drum in my dryer on the back is a black cup thing. It's loose. I don't see screw holes so how do I tighten it?
How long does this take from start to finish? I plan to set some to it this weekend but would like to know how much. TIA!
excellent video.........this guy is right on.........to a tee........thanks again
I I'm going to give this a try but I'm scared to death that I'm going to screw it up laundry is backing up and it's making me crazy Hope this helps me
Whew! you saved me some $$$$. Thank you! But it seems like my hearing effluent may be clothes, any suggestions on that?
He's great! explains well and thorough and I just love it that he is using an old model just like mine, not those fancy front loaders! ~ for those of us who take care of things and not buy new every time something malfunctions, just some TLC on simple machinery! thanks Blake!!
The one he’s using is a front loader. It’s just an older version front loader 😋
Thank you for the clear directions. You saved me from having to buy a $600 dryer. 🎉
Great video thanks. How do you hook up the 2 little cables that were sitting in the bottom of the front at 22:04 in the video? thx
Wow, great tutorial. I thought I was going to have to junk my dryer. You saved it. Thanx
This helped greatly including the tip about tipping the dryer to remove the duct. Found tons of lint and dirt in the dryer as well as the dryer vent. I will be doing this much more often! My dryer is drying clothes again in a normal amount of time!
Thank you! Best instructional video I've seen and so very helpful!!
I have a Westinghouse dryer. My lint trap is in the front. Now I want to do this after watching the video!
You should have vacuum the bottom of the dryer..
Thank you so much for making this video! This helped us with our dryer! ❤
Great video. Very informative.
Best dryer vid!
Thanks! Excellent, we all appreciate you sharing!
This video was exactly what I needed. Thank you.
Also it's a good time to replace the foam tape weather stripping seal along the fan and vent opening.
Thank you so much! Worked like a charm!
Any help?
It looks like a belt tensioner when I looked at it again except it doesn't turn.
Pepsi cooler! Nice to have one while you're working!
I’m going to do this today, video is explained very well,
Excellent video. Thanks much
