Gotta say, that is consistently my favourite moment in the entire show. Done right, it demonstrates the perfect relationship between performer, conductor and light tech. The performer leads the conductor to cut the music at the exact moment they want the vocal part to end. Then the light tech cuts all the lights beyond one right on the performers face that lingers just a half second longer. It gives the performer just a moment longer to give a dramatic head-toss or something. And every time I see it done right, I'm like... *chef kiss*
And that, my friend, is ART at its highest form.
And don't forget the SM calling everything perfectly!!! So beautiful when done right.
@@aqe2732 Stage managers are freaking awesome! And I love all aspects of production. Can confirm: highly timed and co-dependent moments are magical and exciting when everyone nails it. As a live events stage manager, I have to admit I've screamed with joy much to the shock and amusement of nearby production staff XD
Amen! Chills - major chills when it's done right.
Eyyy with technical music hahahahaha...the one that holds the lapel hahahahaha....we coordinate with all of them hahahaha
That conductor is brilliant. I've never seen a conductor that relaxed and calm and just be spot on the entire way. Hope they don't lose her anytime soon, i'll say that
I played piano for her in the orchestra for the Sacramento Music Circus many years ago, and she is super relaxed... and brilliant! ;)
@@robblaney684what’s her name? She’s fabulous!
This conductor is so cool and chilled about the whole thing :D Can tell she knows her stuff :D
After a few hundred performances on the road it becomes old hat.
Sure can!
JustPlainJoel! ...or bored as hell with her job :-/
@@richieinca If she was bored she wouldn't be doing it. Who the hell would be bored doing this?!
iAmLouise it would get boring after a while , hearing the same songs over and over. But you would get better at in the process and a jobs a job
I like how the lights on the music stands go out a split second before the blackout occurs at the end of the song! :D
Sorry, theatre geek here! LOL
markbundles2 yeah! Yay for Ken Posner
As a fellow theatre geek, I 100% agree! Amazing!
As a tech human that is cool
Dude! I just went back and they do! That's so cool.
Thats something I hadn't considered that to get that sudden shock of darkness, ALL of the light go out. So cool!!!
I love that the conductor is so familiar with Jennifer DiNoia 's performance that she knew exactly when the "down" was coming, Whoever conducts in London has a habit of cutting actresses short.
Actually, this is from tour
BKPlayz where did they say it wasn’t?
MikeyJay They said it was from London. It’s from tour, if you listen, this orchestration is slightly different from the one on London
BKPlayz they are saying the opposite
BKPlayz read the comment again, they compared it to London, never said it was from London.
The real wizard behind the curtain
HAHAHAHA 😂
The real wizard behind the curtain - is the crew that gets Elphaba *safely* tethered to the "elevator" in just under 4 seconds. Also the elevator device was hydraulic-ram based (the Munchkinland Tour with Idina Mendel and Christin Chenowith), was huge, and about 6,000 lbs. The system was pressurized and moved during the louder musical passages. In the theater I worked the elevator was stored "flown" from the grid on electric chain hoists. lowered to the deck right before this scene starts, connected to the pump and reservoir, and placed into position during the second verse. This was in 2009 and the tour re-designed a number of effects and other changes have been made since then to accommodate smaller stages and reduce the number of trucks needed to move the show.
The level of professionalism from all departments and crafts on this show are amazing.
Valerie conducted several shows at the Sacramento Music Circus when I was the keyboard player in the orchestra. She is fantastic and so fun to work with. Great video.
did you play Keyboards there during either time "Wicked" was in town?
The Elphaba is INCREDIBLE. I loved all of her choices. Especially on the last few “bring me down”. Her clarity is insane
She sounded like a total rock star live, in the best way. Her voice has a little bit of a rasp, sort of like a little touch of Pink's voice, and it's fantastic. She's absolutely one of my favorites
If I’m not mistaken I’m pretty sure this is Jenny DiNoia
@@jalon24 Nah, I think that's Alyssa Fox. I could be wrong though.
@@NewRUclipsisstupid Alyssa has a very specific way she runs the climax lol. This is Jenny for sure.
This is Jenny Dinoia, for sure.
The chimes at 5:25 make it so magical for me
But the little head tilts on those bells
You can see the percussionist playing this on the far right side!
The bells of fate pulling us forward
Oh god I miss being in a theater so much 😭
Whoever that Elphaba is, she’s amazing.
It's Jenniffer Dinoia.
Thanks. She’s awesome.
Listen to Willemijn Verkaik now
@@toolate4348 any idea who the Glinda is?
@@itsbassicallysam Jennifer is better
I havent felt like this about this song in years..... I watched this video and suddenly I was in 6th grade having just discovered wicked for the first time and playing a pixelated bootleg of idina over and over and over.....just, wow. Thank you
Tardisin221B best vivid memory description ever! Thank you! Lol
Tardisin221B exactly the same 😭
I mean, I admire the conductrice for her calmness aka professionality, I would be headbanging, arm-swinging, jumping and everything while "conducting" this
This! You could tell she's cool and collected but still feeling the music
I could watch the entire show from this perspective. It hits differently, I love this energy.
The “communication” between the conductor and the performers is amazing!
I know she's a professional and that this is part of the job, but I gotta give mad credit to Ms. Gebert for being so composed during this. If I were conducting this song to Jennifer DiNoia I'd be goin absolute HAM on that podium
Wait the stand lights go out during the blackout? That’s so cool.
Hanson they didn’t when I subbed in the production, but I’m sure each theater has different things happen depending how exposed their orchestra pits are!
@@Nenn-qs2yw I've seen it happen and it's really cool. I guess if you have some spare dimmers to run to the pit why not use them- it's a great effect when everything shuts off like that. I've even seen the conductor video screen blackout, and the audience isn't even looking at that!
@@aqe2732 sounds like they sure must have dimmers in the pit to me
Its ok that they blackout the pit because that is the end of act 1 so its ok
@@aj.guevarra12 when i was playing in the pit for this show for the broadway run. we never had a black out in the pit too because the pit was fully covered (except the conductors podium)
One of the greatest first act closers ever. I've seen it live at least a dozen times and will go again as soon as 8 can. 🥰💚🥰💚🥰
Is it just me or did anyone else get teary-eyed and goosebumps at the same moment? I hope someday I could watch Wicked. 🙏🏻
Someone uploaded the whole musical on youtube, you can watch it there
amihan99 Thank you! I already watched it here. I was just hoping I could watch it live someday. ☺️
Oooh you can really hear all of the individual instrument better!
so cool to see it from this angle! makes it even more magical if that’s possible.
loved the conductor too, she’s legit
the look of approval on her face after Elphie optioned up on the last BMD
The next time you're in the theater, turn around and look for the conductor screens. I never noticed them until I went on stage for a professional musical myself (Ciske de Rat, Dutch original). The actors have (multiple, often black and white, dimmed) screen(s) in the theatre hall to see the conductor too. Of course conductors take cues from actors, especially in solos, but for ensemble numbers, it's very useful. Backstage there are also a few screens for those singing off stage.
Toon Holman it’s the first thing I do when I go see shows
Yes! The first time I saw this was with Mamma Mia, and now everytime I go to a musical I look for them!
I recently did a show at my local theatre and let me tell you those screens are literal life savers if you ever are unsure if it’s your cue or not you can just look at the conductor on the screen. They are the best things ever
This conductor and the dialogue happening unspoken between so many different aspects is remarkable. It gives me chills. The timing, precision of the hits, fades, all with singer lights and stage are on full perfect execution. What a gem this pit cam is. Well done yall. Chills. Goosebumps.
I love how the conductor’s calm but still is feeling it :D
All the fog and lights during the end is amazing!
Jenny DiNoia is kicking ass and taking names with this performance! !!
That conductor is amazing- staying calm through all of that backphrasing, and the rhythmic changes she made (I am more of only change when necessary type of person) but stellar job!!
4:56 the anticipation of her rising always gives me goosebumps in person
The ending always gives me the goosebumps!
Stunning scene. I always thought there were more musicians.
There are in New York and other companies. The orchestration has been reduced for this tour- it's a common practice.
@@figarothecat3707 there's also way more off screen considering you can hear brass
That made emotional. Favorite song and to see the orchestra play was a treat
Amazing work, amazing conductor...
And Elphaba... is one of the best I've heard.
Perhaps the greatest pair of female roles in the 21st century theatre. The HARMONIES here and in For Good are stunning. And this is one of the most epic and emotionally affecting Act I endings. WHAT A SHOWSTOPPER. Can’t help but cheer the actress who belts out this difficult bridge... BRAVO 👏🏾
If I can’t sing as a Wicked Character...I will willingly sacrifice myself to the pit as a violinist as part of the production T_T
SACRIFICE YOURSELF??
As a woodwind doubler in pits, I'm offended 😜
Are there even violinists in the pit? I thought they use synths
@@davidwee5237 if I remember right, the 'full' orchestration for Wicked has one violin, one cello, and a keys player on 'strings'
@@DanceMyStyle ohic I guess u learn something new everyday! Thanks for the info!
Hey If I can’t be fiyero then I’ll sacrifice myself as the one tuba player lol.
Obsessed with this. So fun and cool to see the behind the scenes
This is one of my favourite videos ever. It's so wonderful to see the music behind the show. And the musicians behind the instruments. The music is so special.
If someone has a bootleg version of this performance, I will be eternally grateful!! 🙏
This is one of my ultimate favourite dg recordings ever!!
Um this elphaba is killing it like these opt ups workkkk
If I had a second lifetime, I would be a percussionist, and I would work my but off for this show!
After my sister being a musical director for a westend musical, I know how hard it is to even get pit forward to be picked to do this F***ing incredible and magical and dream job! Me and my sister have both been musical directors and are both (not to be big headed) pretty good at it. I just did the musical directing for a local performance of evita and obviously being a Lloyd Webber can't be half done so we had an 18 piece orchestra! X
I'm obsessed with this. I watch at least once a week and it just reminds me how amazing theatre is and how we will get it back one day!!
I can't say i have heard the Xylophone as much in other recordings as i did here. I also thought the pit would have a larger group of instruments in there too. Interesting!
That blackout is sick!!!! Oh
thank you, I'm not a professional musician or something close to that but I've always thought about the moment and conducting in the orchestra pit, leading defying gravity, no one mourns for wicked, one short day, the wizard and I... really thank you. I feel like my dream comes true just by watching this.
Constantly anticipating what the singers do. Mad props. Makes it feel like she's leading them 100 percent even though she has to follow them to some extent.
I wanna be in a pit orchestra so bad when I grow up that's the coolest thing ever
Omg me too!!
IKR dream job!
@@marthahilty-sprout6270 just need to find contacts so i can do it. Not sure how to get into doing it:(
Nicola Mahtani same. I’m hoping to get into berklee next year so I can keep up with the competition. Hopefully I can get hooked up with some contacts while at berklee. I need to play drums in a pit other than my high school lmao
Just amazing!
i wouldn’t be able to keep a steady tempo if i was a conductor 😂 i would go off the singing lmao
Cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It just makes it even more magical!!! Not many female conductors around. Great to see 👏🏻👏🏻
Literally the best job in the world. I would LOVE to be the conductor for this show. 😭
But also, anyone hear the same chords of "unlimited" from "The Wizard and I" coming from the tubas? Never heard it before until now.
Did you also know that the first seven notes Elphaba sings in the "Unlimited" motif also are the first seven notes in "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"?
@@hanonondricek411 I thought so!! Waaaay back when I first listened to it, I thought "hey!!! That's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"!!
I heard the music in a such a new way. There are layers to the song I have never noticed before but this video brought them out for me. Thank you so much for giving us such an amazing glimpse into such an iconic theater moment.
You are actually hearing the audio coming from the pit, rather than the reinforced/mixed audio coming from the speakers. It's so nice to hear the music "raw" when it's recorded that close by!!
I blasted this on my tv and sang all of it
Great performance 😭😭😭 it’s so beautiful
Great job, Valerie Gebert! Fascinating to watch, thank you for posting
I saw DiNoia on Broadway last summer!
it's still magical to watch it at this angle!! Thanks for the vid
This music always makes my eyes misty, and my heart full. Love this conductor!!!
5:54 gives me chills every time!
Just another day at the office! I love the orchestra. The orchestrations are awesome!!
this is my absolute dream job. top of my goals for life is to conduct Wicked.
Huffulpuff rules
Love the way she uses her head three times starting at 5:24 to signal the bell...
Always love this! Wish I was more musically inclined so I could do this💚🖤
She reminds me of my all state conductor, very awesome
I've been watching so much of this I have Wicked ear worm. Not that I mind too much. . . laadaa defyyyying gravityyy.
I guess I never even put together the thought that the lighting guy is also watching her for the blackout cue to hit with the stinger at the end. I’d give my right arm to sit in either the pit, FOH, or lighting booth of a Broadway show
The stage manager calls the light cues (and all the other cues). The board op just hits "GO" when told to.
@@figarothecat3707 Audio on the other hand is usually watching the conductor on monitor very closely. When operating audio it isn't great to have a clearcom in one ear so usually there is a light on the console that indicates sound cues (cued by a calling SM). However it's important for the VCA mix to be cued exactly and the conductor is often more reliable "in the moment" than the calling SM!! Like in this number here, I would much rather be watching the conductor monitor than waiting for a green light!!
How Wicked was that?!?! Amazing.
HUGE PIT! look at all that space, or did half the orchestra call in sick?
+ Chris R The Wicked tour orchestration only calls for 3 woodwind doublers so everyone is there! The venue (Uihlein Hall) is massive and the pit is very large, so there is definitely lots of room!
The summary says it's the tour company.
Where is it situated in relation to the stage? Or are they behind the stage and the conductor is watching a screen of the stage performance? My brain is so confused by this lol
@@crsh2007 the conductor is literally in front of the stage like a normal musical performance. The pit is directly under the stage
I read something somewhere that elphaba controls the conductor when shes in the air because elphaba cant see the conductor from up there. (But on Broadway I know there is video screens) but what I had heard is when elphaba lifts her broom before shes gonna end Ahhhh note it cues the condctor orchestra and ensemble. Which the conductor here kind makes the same movement as elphaba.
Joel ARTPOP yes it’s just like in The Wizard and I or No Good Deed, when she makes her last power move it creates the final button!
When she does the final aAaAa note, she lifts her broom and it cues the ensemble to sing "down" and when she throws her hand down, that's the cue for the orchestra to go
Noah Sprague tell that to Christine Dwyer who’s voice gave out on the last note in TWAI and she did the arm movement 3 times total, 2 to no avail lmao
This is true, to an extent. For DG specifically, the first arm thrust cues the ensemble and the one that follows cues the orchestra. The final thrust/power move determines when everything stops. This is true for TWAI and NGD too. Both songs end on the actor's cue. That's why you'll see most of them twisting their torso back to signal they're about to end it.
Wickedly Gravitational do you have a video? I’d love to see that!
I love this song lovely cover 💖❣️❤️💕😍💙
She is so chill so cool!
Wow, actual conducting. I came from watching piano conductor cams where there was hardly any conducting at all.
Unsung heroes
Qué tranquila la directora¡¡¡ y eficiente, hermosooo¡¡ felicitaciones
I love this
This is so cool!
I couldnt imagine trying to play with all the feedback of hearing their voices, then hearing the delay of it coming through the mic while trying to keep in time/pay attention to what youre playing.
The conductor triggers a click track that some players will use in their headphones. Pit musicians have Aviom personal monitor mixers for their headphones so none of the other musicians are affected by individual choices.
No matter how many time I see this! I cry
Videos like this make me excited to be in pit in the coming years- unfortunately I play alto saxophone so I couldn’t really play in a lot of musicals like Wicked because it’s a different music style but it’ll be fun nonetheless :>
I'm presuming that's a huge screen of the show infront of the conductor rather than the actual stage? Great to have such a good over-view of everything from the cam in this one.
@Robert Lee, Countertenor Wow! OK Robert, thank you very much for the info. I'll rewatch it now. :)
The orchestra pit is so cool!
Valerie is fluid in her arm movements, she probably does not think what comes next.
that "kiss me goodbyyye" was so sweet 2:23 and i like how she made the "can't pull meeeeee down" longer too
Those strobes at the end 😍
Dang it man, music is incredible.
I’m so angry that I’m a boy I wish I could grow up to a girl and be elphaba
Amethystz Same
U never know there might be a manphaba one day
Bhad Jhoe I hope
U could be fiyero or maybe they will do different genders 1 day!
Same dude I would come out in full drag just to be Elphaba
Yes any time the house lights go out the stand lights also go out to deepen the effect
A total blackout to close out Act 1. Really adds that punch.
Left hand chorus, right hand orchestra. Beautiful. I’d screw it up in one second…
Why am I crying....
Could you upload The Wizard and I please?
Okay, who else on the pit room videos marathon now? lol
Better than watching the show. Great conducting
That blackout tho. 👏👏👏👏
