I'm pretty sure it's a synthesizer you're talking about. The Who were probably trendsetters with their use of synths.
As a Detroit area native we have a great early connection to The Who. Even before they made it big in the US we had a local high school teacher from Dearborn (Detroit suburb) who was also a music promoter as well. He got all kinds of great acts to come to Detroit. Before the rock arena era he had The Who playing local venues like high school auditoriums in the Metro area from 1965 onward. As a result The Who always loved playing here and they had a huge following here before anywhere else in the US. Pete Townshend always acknowledged that in their appearances in the Detroit metro area. I've seen them three times in Detroit. Twice with the original lineup and the last time when they played with Zach Starkey on drums. The last time was so cool. We had floor tickets at the Joe Louis arena and there were people of all ages at the concert. I saw people brought their grand kids who were rocking out and I could see they knew all the lyrics. It was awesome. They don't get enough credit for how innovative they were. Especially Who's Next and Quadrophenia were experiments in sound and thought.

Also grew up in the Detroit area. My greatest missed concert regret was not going to the '75 show with Keith Moon on drums, though I was only 15 then. But some of my friends did. I remember they played a smaller venue in '79, the Masonic, as a thank you, but it was bloody expensive, so I caught them at the Silverdome, which was also great, but surely not as great as with Moon.
The instrument you're asking about is probably a synthesizer using the "strings" setting.

Love Reign O'er Me is not only my favorite Who song, but quite possibly my favorite song of all time! Thanks so much for hitting it. The Who is just an incredibly prolific and talented band. For a slightly different vibe, I'd suggest a song they did in the 80's called Emminence Front, the band's prinicipal songwriter (guitarist Pete Townshend) sings and it is super funky. I'd also recommend checking them out live "Young Man Blues" from their Isle of Wight performance is the definition of rock n' roll and you get to see them in action. In their prime The Who was condidered the best live band, they were incredible on stage.

The contrast between the words "reign" and "rain" is one of the coolest things about this song.
It is the end of something epic, the rock opera Quadrophenia.

This song is 50 years this year (2023) and it still is genius!!!!!!!!!!!! Ahhhhh. Memories!
One of my favourite Who songs and here’s a really odd suggestion, The Who were awarded the Kennedy Center Honour and Bettye LaVette covers this song so beautifully that it brings tears to Pete and Rogers’ eyes.

The difference between the greatest rock band in the world and Led Zep is one is a total original and the other is a great covers band.
Led Zeppelin is the greatest band ever, they only have a few covers, get real....

Check out WON’T GET FOOLED AGAIN by The Who. Also, any of their live performances at Woodstock (1969).
The instrument is a VERY early synth, Pete Townshend basically taught everyone how to use synths for rock. The best sound engineers in the world didn 't know how to do it, he taught them.
A classic with superb vocals by Roger and incredible drums. One of my all time favorites. This is in my top 10 or 20 WHO songs. the WHO had so many hits from the mid 1960’d through the early 1980’s!

If you appreciate the strings sound , and epic music , I highly recommend checking out The Moody Blues, they combined progressive rock with a full orchestra, as well as using a mellotron. ( a type of keyboard where each key can play an entire chord, it's a very haunting sound)

Drummer Keith Moon almost singlehandedly inspired me to take up drumming. So expressionistic, passionate, and dynamic. Not unlike a classical approach to drumming on this and many other Who songs. He didn't just keep the beat, but supported *everyone,* and added much himself, even *melodic* content.
Perhaps my favorite Who song....very cinematic.

It *is* basically the last song of a movie - a rock opera, more specifically. All of Quadrophenia is well worth a listen (particularly "The Real Me" for one hell of a bass solo, and "Bell Boy" for Keith Moon going completely nuts on the drums).
And Moon’s singing on “Bell Boy”😁(he couldn’t carry a tune, but on “Bell Boy” it worked!😁😁😁)

I grew up in Royal Oak,MI. It was a great time in the 60s and 70s. We had tons of dance clubs The Grande Ballroom was one were all the new groups played even LedZepplin, and then became popular. It was a fun time.
My 2nd favorite Who song behind Eminence Front, which I could listen to forever.

I'd say this is an example of orchestral rock. While the Beatles began using strings with songs like "Eleanor Rigby," I don't think we really got full-on orchestral rock until the Moody Blues' "Days of Future Passed" album (1967). While the whole thing is worth a listen, as it is a concept album, the part most would direct you to is "Nights in White Satin," preferably including the "Late Lament" poem at the end. Love Reign O'er Me is the perfect climax (last song) to the rock opera, Quadrophenia, a double album masterpiece on a level of excellence similar to that of the rock opera, Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. Imagine following the Quadrophenia story of tortured youth to have it end with this plea for love. This is Pete Townshend's (of THE WHO) peak of songwriting excellence.

7:20 that octave spanning arpeggio background texture you were just asking about is meant to be strings, specifically violins in this case. Whether they actually played violins on it or had somebody play violins on it or quite possibly just used synthesized violins on a keyboard, either way it's the kind of composition I really like. It adds so much tension to have that moving around back there and yet it's way in the background. I'm really impressed that you heard it and picked it out.

this is the final song for the double album Quadrophenia. The album is am absolute masterpiece. It is about young men struggling to come of age.

That's hilarious. A shower song. That is so funny. I do remember the first few times I ever heard this as a kid, to me I didn't even know specifically what the words were about? But when he sings Love Reign (versus "rain", get it?) O're Me, I always heard it as, Love ... Rain On Me ...
It's hard to explain what I found inspiring and beautiful about the imagery I usually had as I was listening to that part, that can be a difficult time for a kid, junior high ages, and our family had issues so I experience quite a bit of pain along with all the really good stuff too of course. But anyway I always had this image of kind of partly me partly almost like a third person heroic figure standing out in this really intense thunderstorm where it's just throwing all this bad stuff down on him, and he's just getting pounded but he's standing up against this pain falling hard on him.
And then suddenly it just kind of shifts into this image of it's no longer a thunderstorm it's it's it's it's, it's it's basically a gentle thundershower. Which I love how they use the timpani drums there to indicate thunder in the background.
But anyway and then this gentle thundershower is suddenly fresh an and cleansing, and I am kind of standing up and feeling the intensity of that heavy storm of pain go way down from what it was, and suddenly there's this feeling that you're being washed clean. It was always a very powerful emotional image for me and I still saw it again just now hearing the song for the first time in probably 15 or 20 years.
Wow! Glad to help that image resurface. It's alot to learn from those images in our head. Sometimes we gotta deep dive into our subconscious.

Pretty sure it's synthesizers. THE wgo we're o r if the first bands to really explore the use of synthetic in music and how they would sequence the dynthsxwoth studio multi tracking. Way ahead of their time .

It was actually cinematic, as they created a film that used the Quadrophenia soundtrack.
Interesting that young people don’t know what synthesizer are. Maybe because they are now used to blend in. Sound like other instruments rather stand out with their unique electronic sounds as when they were new.
It’s nice to see young people enjoy this old music. Just as these artists took inspiration from those before them.
