I just bought a brompton with 6 gear. so basically... [gear] left(down/up) right(1/2/3) 1st : low 1 2nd : up 1 3rd : low 2 4th : up 2 5th : low 3 6th : up 3 so think there are only three main gear 1 / 2 / 3 and each number has "low one" & "high one"
Thanks a lot for your technical videos! They are very much appreciated. This video is a bit confusing though as the left hand gear shifter is on the right of the video and the right hand gear shifter on the left. Would have been better to take the video from the rider's point of view.
Hello Any chance of an updated video for the new 2017 leavers. I had my first ride out today and I'm shamed to say I struggled. Also when doing the video it may be a good Idea to face the camera in the direction of the rider so it is easier to relate to.
Beside , Brompton riders are always talking to themselves anyway. Why not spend the time making excuses for why it isn't linear. You can put your socks on and take them off when you put on each pant's leg, too.
This video is missing something important that makes it EVEN MORE COMPLICATED. you need to pedal for the +/- Left hand and you *mustn’t* pedal with the Right hand hub. Geez Louise
+bromptonbicycle this needs to be result from the rider's POV and using the new shifters. It should also note that gear shifting is more than just the levers - the hub gear won't change under load, and the derailleur won't change without pedalling, so that should be mentioned in the video. FWIW, the gear operation is simple enough that a tech video is almost redundant, but if there is be be one it ought to be useful.
M6L owner here. Are we allowed to operate both shifters simultaneously? Since what I know is right-shifting is done without pedalling, and left-shifting is done while pedalling.
Budisanto Tanoto & Alfred Ho Hub gears aren't nearly as sensitive to continued pedalling as they used to be (many) years ago, so just easing off the pedal pressure a bit while continuing to move them round will do just fine. Which works quite well with the derailleur type of gears too, in fact for those it's a pretty good idea to ease the pressure while changing gears as well. So technically it shouldn't be a problem, but us human beings are the real issue making it awkward changing both gears simultaneously as we're not very good at multitasking 😉
H is it normal to have slight sound when changing the gear, during transit there is friction sound like its trying to latch for brief moment before it really engage.or it has to be quick and smooth
I'm in the middle of taking a brompton out for a test ride. The shop didn't tell me how to use the gears so I turned to this video and I will tell you it was no help. I'm none the wiser. Your left or my left!?
Hub gears can be changed when stationary. Useful in town. Also they gear up in top gear so large chainrings or very small rear sprockets are not needed in order to get a high enough top gear with small wheels. Brompton derailleur: All Bromptons - even one speed - have to have a chain tensioner as part of the folding magic. To make the tensioner into a derailleur only requires the clever bent metal plate to knock the chain to either side and the lever/cable. Therefore it is like a derailleur for almost free. Also it doesn't hang down as far as a 'normal' derailleur. Important on a 16 inch wheel bike. Or are you suggesting a Shimano Alfine or Rolhoff hub gear? One answer to that is cost. Especially for the Rolhoff. Kinetic of Glasgow do such conversions. They still need the chain tensioner. It is possible to get 3 or even 4 cogs on the Sturmey Archer hub.
Why does this make no sense? I've been looking at bike gear videos all day now, and I still don't understand how they work, what their point is, or what one I should use. I know I'm not retarded, so why the fuck can I not get this??
I just bought a brompton with 6 gear.
so basically...
[gear] left(down/up) right(1/2/3)
1st : low 1
2nd : up 1
3rd : low 2
4th : up 2
5th : low 3
6th : up 3
so think there are only three main gear 1 / 2 / 3
and each number has "low one" & "high one"
Can you just use 2nd, 4th, and 6th gear and not worry about the down/up gear? Or does it have to be shifted sequentially?
This is the best explanation yet! thank you :) I found the video confusing.
you can learn to do it.
But they also could learn to make change before decimalization of the pound.
John-Q Yang: Thank you for the explanation.
@@andrewfeazelle That's basically treating your 6 speed like a 3 speed. And yes, it's possible! :)
Thanks a lot for your technical videos! They are very much appreciated. This video is a bit confusing though as the left hand gear shifter is on the right of the video and the right hand gear shifter on the left. Would have been better to take the video from the rider's point of view.
You ,my dear sir, have apparently never tried to do the Hokey Pokey
That's what it's all about

You may need some gumption first. Not sure where you aquire that though. You could try Amazon I guess
More to remember that gears on my 16 speed class one HGV lol
1:11 as an M6L owner, I agree

Hmmm this video lacks clarity. What do you mean by low and high position ? Is it the plus and minus signs???
Would have been more intuitive filmed from the riders perspective looking at gearing. Filmed from front the gear selectors in the video are reversed.
+bromptonbicycle this needs to be result from the rider's POV and using the new shifters.

the right hand gear lever not attached properly and is no longer changing gears. How do i fix
It probably tried to kill itself, sacrificing to spare you having to learn how to do this or try to explain this to anyone else.
Well that's clear as mud. Maybe an illustrative graphic would have helped

This is my doubt also

shifting is awkward when going from 2nd to 3rd and 4th to 5th since you have to operate 2 levers simultaneously.
You basically have a 3 speed with high and low option for each gear. Not that complicated.
Now I understand ... why there are many youtube videos ... showing how to convert Brompton internal to external gear systems.
Out of date shift gear, not what they use now and upside down and backwards
my stuff sure doesn't shift as smoothly as this purports to.
When you're using the right shifter, don't pedal, and it well change gears smoothly as silk. I figured this out just now.
If I may say, the camera perspective is a bit confusing…
Say what now??! 😳
You shouldn’t need a memory like rain man to change gears
good
Why not just do a twist grip like Dahon...
If you need to ask; you really don't need a Brompton
I'm in the middle of taking a brompton out for a test ride. The shop didn't tell me how to use the gears so I turned to this video and I will tell you it was no help. I'm none the wiser. Your left or my left!?
1970's bike, '70s video
most of your videos failed to explain the why! and that make it impossible to remember anything you explain.
the 2nd to 3rd and 4th to 5th ....
I don't own one, but is there a reason why normal gears weren't used? Aside from making it look more special, lol.
Ïf it ain't broke, it don't need fixin' " Pope PaulV to Galileo, 1616

How to make something simple massively confusing. It would help if you’d filmed this from the riders pov.
If you think this is complicated, wait until you’ve seen their handy guide to fitting a rear rack.
How easy is it to convert my 6 speed down to 2 speed? I found that I don't need 6 gears where I live.
Cut cable. Voila

you need replace the rear wheel

i just want to ride a bike, why should i remember all these
Confusing
wtf
I'm afraid this is what the world is coming to.. We can't even ride a push iron without in-depth on how to change gear.
Coming next; how to pedal..😂
I've been riding bikes for 50 years and this is not an intuitive gear system!
shoka
This is a shitty idea. It's like flying an aircraft.
