Congrats on winning the contest, Z Burn! The ‘Hell Troll Man’ looks sick. Winning that battle is no easy feat; that notch in your belt definitely comes with some serious bragging rights!
Great growth on that Acropora. I love the structure of the colony. Do you happen to know which species of Acro it is? The reef looks great. Thank for sharing and happy reefing.
Congrats! Interesting to hear your methods. It would have been interesting if every competitor was raising ten frags rather than one to reduce variance in possible starting frags. Also be great if there was a report from the competition with all of the data like you presented. Great research opportunity.
Thanks so much! I forgot to mention that all frags had to be measured on day 1 to get the baseline value. So yes, some had smaller frags than others when starting, but the variance was minor and starting sizes were taken into consideration during judging of final pic.
You just missed the start of the fall 2024 grow out competition. There are also a couple spring 2024 grow outs that will wrap up here and be ending in a few months. I am sure Adam at Battlecorals will start up some more competitions this Spring. Here is the thread to keep an eye on things: www.reef2reef.com/forums/battlecorals.389/
@@lukaivic5790 well, I try to vaccum it periodically, but to be honest, it’s always dirty so I have been slowly removing some sand every time I do a water change. I’ll probably leave just enough in the back corners for my wrasse to sleep.
@@senegalus hey there, thanks so much! The tank is a 72 gallon display and with sump included, has around 90 gallon total volume. For pumps I am using Ecotech vortech mp40s.
I do 10% weekly at a minimum and if things are looking good. If stuff looks a little off, I’ll do multiple 5-10% water changes over a few days and this has always gotten the tank back on track.
I dosed 25 ml a day of the stock solution suggested by Randy on R2R. I hit a nitrate reading of 10 ppm about 3 weeks in. Now, Im doing a maintenance dose of 5 ml a day and it seems to keep my nitrate reading steady. Also, still feeding a lot.
I think technically it’s 72 gallon, with the sump included its 90 gallons total volume. For t5 bulbs, I am running 3 ATI Blue Plus and 1 ATI Purple plus.
Yep, the chaeto kept crashing and dieing off...so I got tired of the mess. So all I have in there is some rubble at the moment. I think if the chaeto is growing and its doing fine, no reason to change. I've had very successful systems both ways. Some tanks just don't support the chaeto all that well.
@ mine is shinning, time to time its block my skimmer so a bit a pain that’s why I was thinking about gettin ride of it, but I am also afraid of losing control on nutirents
You mentioned that you use Tropic Marin Pro salt. That salt is usually low in Alk, around 7-7.5 ish. In your other videos you mentioned that you like to maintain 9ALK. Do you dose alk to your fresh saltwater before doing a water change? If yes, what?
My alk hovers around 8 - 8.5 since switching to tropic Marin pro salt. I’d prefer 9 dkh, but this salt mixes fast and is readily available. I don’t add alk to the salt since I only do smaller water changes. A larger emergency water change I may would or more than likely just add some instant ocean to it to boost alk a little. Hope that helps!
I use the bulk reef supply stuff, but not sure I am tied to it by any means. I’m sure I could probably find the stuff cheaper elsewhere…maybe I need to look? 😂
It’s a Giesemann spectra. You can still order them new across seas (www.giesemann.de/en/light/hqi/spectra), but I picked this one up used on Reef2reef. This is the second time I’ve owned a spectra. I ran a black one about 10 years ago, but then went all led for a while. I had to track one down again for my latest build as it’s my favorite light for sure.
Sure, my goal is that the polyps are always moving. On top of that, I want bursts of vigorous polpy movement every 1 or 2 seconds. WIth just enough intensity that the polyps almost kind of shutter but don't retract. I am running 4 ecotech mp40s on the tank. The short pulse mode is alternating between two pumps and the other two pumps are on constant mode so that polpys are always moving. Hope that helps! If you have more specific questions, let me know.
@@zburnreefing How short is the pulse? It can go from 0.24 to suuuuuper long. Are they in sync or anti-sync? You also mentioned not aiming them at a coral, what if that coral is 3 feet away (linearly)?

Congratulations! Halides for the win! Even though my halides got me 3rd in a different BC contest
Thank you! I think the halides may likely have been the key for me. I would say they definitely gave me an advantage.
