As long as modern video games have existed, arguably few franchises have carried as much weight in terms of influence as Hideo Kojima's landmark sci-fi saga, METAL GEAR SOLID. But how does the series rate, purely on the basis of its science fiction?
In this, the first entry in a new series by legendary MGS youtuber Futurasound Productions, we delve into an underdiscussed topic: METAL GEAR SOLID and biology.
After overviewing the basic idea of the single biggest influence on the games, The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins (1976), we provide an overview that charts the course of the games over time, relative to how each MGS in some form or another continued the original title's emphasis on biology and the post-Dawkinsian age of natural science.

Well Quiet's biology certainly made my Metal Gear Solid
I laughed harder at this than I'd like to admit
"She was created to BE that WAY!" ;)
Quiet is Chico. It was tweeted by Kojima
You should feel ashamed of your words and deeds
Made my snake solid, too!
No other franchise has had a greater impact on my thinking, and what my adult life would become, than Metal Gear Solid (which I first played when it was released at the age of 12) and Metal Gear Solid 2. As long as I have remembered, I have believed that if my genes will not survive my lifetime, than maybe my memes will.
It's amazing how a piece of art that is viewed to be generally low brow, video games, have had more influence on my life than all other art forms.
People can reproduce in a few ways.
A) Individual Selection via sexual reproduction
B) Group Selection via Ideas/ Memes ( monks, philosophers , authors etc)
C) Group Selection via Inventions such as weapons and technology ( Genius Strategy/ Extended Kin Selection)
D) A combination of the above
I think a more appropriate title for this video would have been "The Selfish Gene and Metal Gear" since this is really an exploration of the philosophy of Evolution and Genetics through the lens of MGS. After all, I don't really think of hard science when it comes to this series. It teeters between realism and fantasy at the drop of a hat. Good video still!
"Building the future and keeping the past alive are one and the same thing"
Hell yeah! you tell em, Snake
More MGS content from the master of MGS content? YES!
I’m appreciating the in depth commentary and philosophy , great vid as always.
On the next one we should discuss the spirituality of this series as well?!. Thanks in advance.
thats a rich topic -- Vulcan Raven and The Sorrow are the obvious examples, but even Fortune (and maybe Psycho Mantis?) has a very spiritual undertone.
MGS1 is probably one of the only games that came out in the late 90s that deserved it's M rating. Not because of anything graphic or sexually explicit, but because it is easily one of the most mature, intelligent stories ever told in the medium, even to this day. It covered topical subjects as well as deep philosophy, something basically no game had touched on before it, and very few games have even come close to doing since.
While most other developers are playing checkers, Kojima was playing chess with the medium itself. Lots of people will fixate on the silly stuff in the games, and never look past it to what lies beneath, and those people will miss out.
Really impressed with the quality and production of your videos. I can tell you really work hard on these.
As an essay, it is missing a lot, it is mostly just replaying clips from the game, which I vibe with a lot, but the intellectual engagement is limited. Especially the MGS2 one, it's basically nothing more than pointing out it talks about memes which is no mystery and most realise comes from Dawkins or the meaning of it. You simply reiterated elementary information on the subject whilst saying the way it deals with it is immense and complex. There is no back forth of it's ideas to demarcate any way it might split from the theory or be different. Rather, you only point out the intellectual sources and frameworks for Kojimas interpretation but don't go very far into the question, namely how realistic it is. I will say though the MGS3-MGSV part brought it back together and I really liked the analysis. The editing in this video was also great so well done
It's very jarring to be reminded that MGS's philosophy on genes and memes has been so impactful on my perspective of living.
This video concentrates that idea, so it's even more jarring than usual. But it gets me thinking, since I will absolutely never have children, how I will spread my legacy, or now that I'm older, IF I should. I was a touring musician, a service member in the US Navy, and I work now in the medical field. I've encountered and interacted with more people by 29 than most humans have by 99.
What has my impact been on them? What will their impact be on others because of me? Am I important enough to even feel I've left an impact? Being older now, I can really understand the existentialism Liquid and Solidus had about their existence, and why they "defaulted" to their "fathers" ideology of Outer Heaven.
Damn Kojima is an amazing visonary
Watching this one, I'm reminded of what GW would do if it had access to social media.
Love your videos man! Keep ‘em coming!!
We where the real metal gears all along.
Today is the day that Genes learned to walk up right!
La, le, lu, le, lo!
dammit, they got me!!!
*meat gears
@@TheInfiniteNine Snake: me---Meat Gear
an image of a cog flashes
Snake: metal gear
an image of a beer mug with a medal around it
Snake: Metal beer
and a image appears of an actor
Snake: Greg Kineer
Doctor: I'll just pencil you in for Thursday
But we’re still *liquid* based organisms. It’s time for the Genes to walk upright and *solidify* their existence.
Damn I never noticed the effect on the voice of the Patriots sounds just like neural network artifacting. Fucked up.
babe wake up, new jorin lee mgs vid dropped
I have to agree with some of the other commenters that the title of this one is misleading. From the title, I was expecting it to be an exploration of Liquid Snake's (or Hideo Kojima's) misunderstanding of dominant and recessive genes or something. Or, if it was going to discuss selfish gene theory and realism, then it might explore how Liquid seems to think selfish gene theory means he is guaranteed to try to protect his genes, and how this is a misunderstanding of selfish gene theory as a psychological theory, when it is actually not primarily about psychology.
Love your content man
I want to replace all my dank genes with dank memes.
Man, I love your videos. Keep on keeping on!
Another interesting and well put together video
The music in the intro had me thinking it was a PythonSelkan video 😂
Incredible video
Thanks for the videos, as always.
Great video!
Metal Gear has a truly emotionally satisfying soundtrack
Theese videos are great however the titles usually seem to be slightly inaccurate IMO.
Another great one
More topics like these please 💯
Oh heck yeah! I've been anticipating this one!
Man I feel like I gain 2-3 IQ points everytime I watch one of your videos. Great job as always boss!
I know you weren’t a fan of Metal Gear Rising but you really should give it another look if not just for the story. Famously it has a lot to say about memes haha
what's the intro track's title?
That right there is why you're the best, Boss.
In before a title change.
Wait doesn't that mean that the genes are from Venom snake in MGS?
I’m very high and this was logical.
Wow just wow…Amazing 👏🏽 🧬
interesting video as always. is it just me or have you been working on your diction?
I was so prepared for you to reference the Big Chungus parody video. 🤣
I think psycho mantis read Chris chans mind, hence why he went psycho
Damn, liquid sure loves his Levi jeans 😂
This one was fire, would love to see one of these focusing on the role of nanomachines and other forms of bodily control in metal gear/ death stranding, a theme I find has only become more relevant in the age of the pandemic
Science, huh? Interesting.
why don't you subtitle your videos?
17:54 scrolling through tiktok
Snake: jeans, genes, everyone's always talking about my pants....wait, how many Ugene's do we got around here anyways?
Naomi: that's Genes as in genetics Snake.....
Snake: so you don't wanna get in my pants?
Naomi:
sorry, horrible joke
If they had been influenced by Asimov instead of Arthur C Clarke the nanomachines would have gained sentience and taken over the... wait.
No, that's just Parasite Eve with extra steps. Never mind.
Oulala 🥵
Interesting that the writing of Dawkins matches up with things I already came to conclusion by myself, suppose there’s a universal truth to life.
Nanotechnology is real. It does exactly what MGS4 says it does. Look up hydrogel.
Ehm, no?
Realistic, and entirely plausible even if not executed properly inside of the experience, being of Japanese origin content after all. VAMP is just really good at being acrobatic, skilled with throwing knife, and swimming in pressurized water. Navy Seal were loaded with blank as part of the SOP present in the entire story hence how they couldn't hit Fortune then got completed slaughtered by VAMP. Solid is essentially specialized cloned Navy Seal infiltrating Shadow Moses and is as deadly as the refrigeration personel stationed on guard there who are able to find and kill him. Liquid is apart of new protocol seeking to uproot the older established order of Government deeming it unfit of it's presence hence his inherent advantage being directly involved in the project itself with high level of access and direct control. Every boss in MGS3 is just a unique unit with inherent ability respective to their environment. Just because it isn't executed to be 100% authentically doesn't nessicarily translate to it not being coherent in reality or plausibility. Nanomachine are just Government regulation enhancement or rather disposition of soldier ability with pathogen or pharmaceutical or whatever other justification is aligned with being in society or world we inhabit today. RAIDEN definately could take out 20 METAL GEAR RAY with a Stinger as easily as he could be shot in the head on E - EXTREME during his PLANT objective by trained RUSSIAN / JAPANESE patrol unit
Laughs... no.
The original title debuted in the 80s, do your research if you're going to do a video.
