Driving my NON TESLA ELECTRIC CAR from LONDON to HARROGATE using ONLY the TESLA Supercharger NETWORK

- I take my Porsche Taycan EV from Nottingham to London then back up to Harrogate using ONLY Tesla Superchargers to see what it's like to charge a non Tesla Electric Car on the Tesla Supercharger network. Is it cheaper? Is it faster than the normal charging Infrastructure? Plus I speak to Tesla owners to see what they think of non Tesla Drivers charging on their network.

Brilliant! 😂
I’ve just watched it again😂
It's kinda based on a stupid premise, but when the small ones said it, I couldn't help but laugh a bit. Kudos for the imagination on the editing tbf.
Hi Geoff!
Yep LOL very clever and accurate,,
Tesla didn't open up their charging network out the goodness of their hearts. The carbon credit incentive is hugely financially profitable to them
They have been losing Tesla customers to cheaper stations in some countries
To get grants in new locations it has to be for all brands. Also V4 chargers accepted contactless card payments. The older ones need the app.
Your Taycan charging on Tesla chargers will be limited to 50 kW only. Other vehicles can reach 250 kW. The reason for this is particular to the Taycan and other vehicles that were designed to be 800 V the Tesla chargers were designed for Tesla cars which operate around 400 V so in order to charge your Taycan with the voltage difference it has to use DC DC converter located on your vehicle which is limited to 50 kW, you could’ve paid extra to have the option of 150 kW DCC converter but I doubt your car has that option as is expensive and previously not necessary since Tesla network was closed to other vehicles.
Is this some weird Taycan thing? Because my car charges just fine on Tesla chargers.
@@moragkerr9577 yes its a Taycan issue.
@@Jeddin I never knew that! What a bummer! (Bwahahahaha!) With Tesla opening up so many superchargers and them being so easy and fast to use, maybe that's why nobody wants to buy Lee's car. My humble MG4 just slots itself into the line of Teslas and sucks up the juice. It even has its charging port in the right place not to annoy the Tesla drivers.
@@moragkerr9577It's more of an 800 volt architecture thing. EV6, Ioniq 5, similar issue.
Numerous videos on RUclips illustrating and explaining this.
Each has to use an onboard converter and that's the limiting factor.
@@djtaylorutube That's really interesting, it's not something I've ever come across. Of course when I bought my car there were very few open superchargers so it's not something that would have crossed my mind at the time, let along been a deal-breaker. It's very different now though, with so many open and the prices being so good. I don't think I'd consider a car that couldn't use the supercharger network with a normal charging speed.
I wonder how many buyers actually know about this little foible when they buy their cars?
But trust Lee to make a huge drama out of it all.
If we get autonomous cars in UK I’m having a stop sign put on the back of my ICE car. Should be fun.
LOL will also work with any recent car with ISA and sign recognition too. 😆👍

Quentin loves to clock . He ain't to be trusted walking your dog? Why do people give him air time ? Because the government pay him? See a pattern guys ??
Lee need a bumper sticker on his Taycan that says, “My other car is a Tesla.” 😂😂😂
My wife was saying, one of her work mates just bought a 24 plate Audi recently. She wanted an EV Audi, but the dealership she went to, actually advised her against it, as they told her that the infrastructure just ain't there.
Top sales person that, there are a few still good ones around with people's interest as priority rather than targets. I personally value good advice, I have a good relationship with the guy I've bought my last 4 cars from, and he's even said to me, if he's honest and does his best for the customer they'll come back to him. We have a "no bs" relationship, I tell him I want this, I want to pay this, and he gives me the best price "if I play the game and return in a week after they've thought about my low ball offer", no dancing around, no extra well here's this, here's that wasting each others time.
The car I have now, I drove an extra 86 mile round trip coz he moved dealerships (thanks to covid closing my nearest) coz I wanted to deal with him, I know I'd get a good deal and wouldn't have to do the whole dance with someone new, I mean I did go to another dealership closer on the way to visiting my nan just for the fun of it, they wanted £65 extra a month than I'm paying, I said no chance knowing I was likely to pay lower and told the lad to go speak to his finance manager coz I full well know that wasn't the best deal. I left and said if you wanna do business email me with a real offer, they never did get back to me, if they had of, I would've considered it with it being much nearer, but their lose there.
The salesman probably just thought they didn't seem the sort of person who could deal with an EV

Here’s some questions too for your friend to answer…
I am thinking of swapping my ev for an ICE car ….
1. I have heard that petrol cars cannot refuel at home while you sleep? How often do you have to refill elsewhere? Will there be a solution for refuelling at home?
2. Which parts will I need to service and how often? The car salesman mentioned oil in the engine and timing belts that need replacing and a box with gears in it. What is this? How much will this service oil change cost and how often - and what happens to the old oil. Also, apparently these petrol type cars generally stop on the brakes alone - so the brakes wear out much faster - how long will they last compared to my current car which lasts over 100k miles?
3. Do I get fuel back when I slow down or drive downhill?
4. The car I test drove seemed to have a delay from the time I pressed the accelerator pedal until it began to accelerate. Is that normal in petrol cars?
5. We currently pay about 1.2p per mile to drive our electric car. I have heard that petrol can cost up to 8 times as much. Is this true?
6. Is it true that petrol is flammable?
7. I understand that the main ingredient in petrol is oil. Is it true that the extraction and refining of oil causes environmental problems as well as conflicts and major wars that over the last 100 years have cost millions of lives? Is there a solution?
8. I have also been told that you have to transport oil all over the world to turn into petrol or diesel, and these ships have in the past damaged the environment by leaking the oil.
9. I have heard that cars with internal combustion engines are being banned to enter more and more cities around the world, as it is claimed that they tend to harm the environment and health of their citizens? Is that true?
10. I have been told that these internal combustion engines make a noise when you start them - so early starts can wake people up, and driving a lot of internal combustion engine cars in towns makes towns noisy.
11. is it true people can steal the fuel from your tank?
12. what is the drop in range in cold weather, I've been told a car that does 45mpg can drop to 37 mpg in winter - just curious on that one.
13. a friend told me that the exhausts wear out - is that true, and people steal them for the rare material used in them.
14. I was also told - that the exhaust gas isn’t good for you - and if you leave the car running in a confined space - like a garage - you will die - surely that isn’t true is it?
15. next door told me - these petrol cars - carry around 40 to 60 litres of highly flammable liquid which is pumped into a steel cylinder, and its then exploded to generate expanding gas to move a piston, and turn linear motion into rotary motion.
Why would anyone want thousands of explosions happening within a few feet of where your sitting.
16. a guy at work told me - he has a petrol car, and it leaks oil. When he parks it - surely that’s not right is it - leaving dirty marks on the floor and contaminating the environment so directly. How long before this happens if I change.
17. my dad told me - if you buy a diesel car - the hand pump smells very bad, and you have to wear special gloves to stop your hand smelling, and if you spill it on your clothes it terrible.
18. is it true - the petrol and diesel is so dangerous, that you can only buy the fuel at a special filling station, and not anywhere (hotels/Car parks/Home/Work)?
19. while technology is advancing, will I ever be able to refuel my internal combustion car for free using only the sun?
20. would I be better off going straight to horse and cart, and not buying a horseless carriage - they sound pretty awful, burning dinosaur juice and polluting the environment whist funding conflict and war and consuming raw material at an unbelievably high rate.
Love it!
Go ahead, pay an absolute fortune for an unsellable secondhand car just so you don't have to to spend 5 mins in a petrol station to be able to drive 400 + miles without refuelling again aren't you the clever one just waste your life sitting in car waiting for it to charge ha ha ha ha
Horse and cart definitely is the future !
Fact: Average motorist does at least 90% of their mileage on trips below 100 miles. Absolutely no need to worry about public chargers then. 3 year old EV depreciates no more than a 3 year old ICE car.
@@JSMITH6298Did you spend your childhood dreaming of being an average motorist? You probably did. Lee, what you’re saying is effectively this - Quentin absolutely reeks of Bovril. 😱😱🤣🤣
He has always used it on his hair 😂
I think you'll find in Australia, Tesla owners use Vegemite.

What a lovely guy you met at the Teala charging station. A genuinely nice and friendly gentleman!
Yep, after listening to him, I can see why people buy teslas, if they want an ev, Elon got it right, all other companies are on catchup and will have to at least all put their charging sockets in the same place as teslas if they want to compete.
Who would take any notice of Wilson in the real world? How many petrol scooters have caught light opposed to electric ones?
Need to buy a Tesla car cover to blend in 😂
Regarding the Hospital story. It is full of misinformation because the relative number of cars that burn is irrelevant. What matters here is the intensity and duration of an EV fire and the ability of the car park fire system's ability to deal with it. Existing fire suppression isceasily up to an ICE fire, but inadequate to quell an EV fire.
Indeed, risk assessment needed
Tell that to the 2,000 plus car owners who lost their cars in the Luton Airport and Manchester car park fires - both started by diesel Range Rovers.
@@user-sf9lj6dy6w Both were pure ICE, as confirmed by their DVLA records. It's surprising they weren't hybrids as these are even more likely to catch fire than ICEs.
You would have got near 150KW if your car had the DC booster specified. Since it seems you don't your limited to 50KW on 400v chargers with the tycan.
I've had just over 200KW charging on tesla superchargers. That really cuts the charging time
Lee! You shite stirring, rabble rousing son of a gun...I LOVE IT!!! Keep up the good work.
why does the tesla emblem look like a nail in the coffin
If you are pissing off Cretin Wilson, you are definitely doing something right.
ICE cars may catch fire more often but most people carry a fire extinguisher, if your EV catches fire the only thing you need is a pair of running shoes!
I will never own an EV, why?...among the obvious multiple reasons, I have no smart-phone, don't want one, don't need one...& I have noticed among my family just how it changes ones personality. No, a smart-phone is NOT just a "handheld computer", it is a totally different thing.
the corn digestion timing is a great idea.
Speaking as a Tesla owner, i'm actually OK with the network getting opened. By opening it up, Tesla get more money coming in and they qualify for a lot of public subsidy with which they can build more sites. So as long as they keep building chargers at a good rate then it's ok. At least I haven't yet rolled into a charging location to find it full, even though there are often a lot of non-teslas there. I just wish they put the chargers in better locations.
Will your ev become a musician because it knows how to conduct itself?!
Great idea for a T shirt with stop sign printed front & back surrounded by the words. Gota stop a Tesla.

Actually when using V4s (the black ones at the start of your video), you're not blocking anyone. Its probs slow because you started at 90%....
They are upgrading most of them now to avoid the blocking issue/ short cable. And in any case... Id just queue up and wait, not such a big deal....
Also, opening it up to everyone isnt a sign of trouble to the public.. Its a sign of trouble to the big oil financed charger boys who are rinsing the general public at their 80p+ charging networks.... Its a good thing, hopefully the competition will reduce their prices too...

GROUND HOG DAY.
Interesting point about the self driving cars reading road signs on a T Shirts and stopping. I had a Golf (non EV but about to get a hybrid). The adaptive cruise control in that car would read road signs and adjust the limiter to the speed shown, so for example where the speed limit dropped to 50 or 40 on the M25 it would reduce from 70 to the new limit. Quite often though I would be steady at 50 and go past a lorry with a '100' sticker on the back in a red circle, and my vehicle would see this and start accelerating again. Too clever by half and don't get me started on the collision avoidance or lane assist which will either hit the brakes when there is no risk of collision, or try to steer you into the back of a stationary vehicle that you are about to overtake!
Artificially induced congestion… In the 1990’s Reading town council was narrowing the roads and making them one way in the city centre and then putting bus stops at the pinch point.
So that traffic behind the busses would be forced to stop and wait stuck behind while the passengers get on and off.
This was done to deliberately discourage private cars from entering into the city centre and force people to use the new park and ride.
Have you had your charging circuit tested at your dealership.? It cannot be every charger that you stop at that, that is faulty
The plan is to get you out of your vehicle and use public transportation, bicycles or walking. 15-min cities.
Exactly their goal for everyone

Hi Lee, parking eye fxxxxxs. My other half reversed into the entrance to a local p/e policed carpark twice in a few days. She didn't even go into the car park under the barrier but they used the two photo's to make out they had a case for entering and leaving and a £100 fine. They are a total shower of you know what. Also people shopping in our local B & M Bargains and Home Bargains (I'm sure shops a Porsche owner like yourself aren't familiar with) have gotten fines for overstaying by moments. We are being watched and controlled far too much but I do fear it's all the thin edge of the wedge!
And people are worried about 'privacy'. Well just get a Tesla and theyll know it all, and more, quite literally. Even though that Tesla guy was really interesting to listen to, I couldnt believe how calm he was in that they had direct access to exactly what was going on in his life. With my ICE car all they know at a stretch is that I fill up at a local petrol station. For everything else they'd have to dig. With a Tesla if they wanted they could get a photo of him in the car, his surroundings, with ease, and he wouldnt even know it. Just my opinion. Great vid 👌
Maybe King Musk passed an edict that all Tesla Superchargers have an inferior charging rate for non-Tesla EVs...

Unfortunately the Tesla model S is just too big for the UK but those with a model S with free lifetime Supercharging are laughing, and driving well over 100,000 miles with minimal sevicing (the biggest cost is tyres). Early modelSs with free charging still come on the market occasionaly.
Tesla dual motor - just means, it catches fire 🔥 twice as quick!
Get a self charging hybrid. 63 mpg and run on petrol (LBX)
I would stop worrying about Quenton Crisp and him spouting on BBC radio....have you seen the size of BBC radio`s audience?
The U.S. government will pay Tesla to open its charger network to non-Tesla electric vehicles, and the spending will be spread among other automakers, retail chains, land developers, and others who qualify for public charger subsidies. Tesla's share of the $7.5 billion has not been disclosed. 😮
Chargers are strategically positioned at a car park entry so the fire service can easily get to them or they are down at the back of a carpark to minimise risk to other vehicles, pedestrians and buildings.
Someone on radio 4 today biging up the ev Market saying how wonderful thay are to drive fast and quiet relaxing and how there's a thriving second hand Market for them with lots of different models and makes to choose from ideal for the retired people and how cheap to run thay are not a mention of the range especially when that retired person is towing a caravan around the UK let alone to the south of France or Spain

Lee, I know I’m usually on here taking the p*ss or having a pop but on a more serious note. I’m an electrical engineer and work for one of the UK’s largest construction companies, we built a multi storey car park in Surrey a couple of years ago and also installed about 140 ev chargers. Surrey fire and rescue absolutely hated the idea, we designed everything well above any current regulations and it was passed by the local council(who paid for the project). The evangelists can say what they want but they are dangerous as foook, if you have a fire while charging and can’t electrically isolate the charger they will keep burning until there’s nothing left.👍
The electric car burns more violently and far hotter and are also near impossible to put out, as they cannot be smothered as they produce internally all the requirements for combustion. A small fire extinguisher can put out a petrol or diesel but not an EV and when burning they are like flame throwers, so they set fire to the surrounding cars.
Haha! I've just stumbled on your videos and saw the massive loss you've made on your Taycan in a previous video. Sad, but proves the point that 'you should have bought a Tesla'! My black M3LR cost just under £50k new, and we leased it through a salary sacrifice scheme, which cost just over £500/month. The 3 years are up in June. We've done just under 20k miles, which has cost just under £700 for electricity. The lease company paid for a new set of tyres last month, which would have cost about £900, and Tesla came to the house to 'service' the car after 2 years and replaced the pollen filter. Probably cost the lease company another few hundred pounds. We've been offered the car for just over £24k, which we will be buying as it's in excellent condition after taking good care of it over the last 3 years. I'm not sure it's quite as good as the Lancia Delta I drove for 3 years, but it is an amazing car in a very different way. So, mock Tesla and EVs all you like, but the reality is you bought the wrong one, and if you choose wisely, owning an EV is a joy and also makes great financial sense. Just to add some balance.
"I think you'll find you should have got a Tesla". I don't have a Tesla but have zero issues with my Ariya, best car I've ever "not owned" you see yes I fully agree with the leasing thing, with new'ish tech like EVs it makes zero sense to buy one. Lease it people. £500 per month is a lot of money but a lot of fans of this channel would think nothing of paying £100+ a month for a Smartphone. I know there are leasing deals around for £250 per month for a new EV. Factor in the savings on fuel (if you have a driveway and can charge at home) and you get to drive a new car every three years for next to nothing or less than nothing depending on how many miles driven per month. Onwards my friend. 🙂
Lot of charging if it were petrol/diesel fill up once or twice depends on the distance 10mins and done.
Can't you turn off the lane assist in the settings?
Epic journey and I'm proud of you with all of those lush bushes you stil went to the service station!
Ah the V4’s - Rumour has it that Musk sacked the whole Supercharger team, as they thought they could defy gravity with those dodgy charger plugs - they put them in upside down and wonder why all the charge guns look like they are dropped on the ground each day by the charger - I visit the one at Trentham every few weeks and always find at least one charge gun on the floor, also look at the state of every gun (6 months in) next time you use a V4! (EDIT: Even on those new ones, look @4:54 )
Now, I did wonder why the gun/handle or whatever they are looked like it had been through the mill. That explains it, dropped every time it's been used, probably multiple times.
Eye opening it’s all hassle and time consuming 👍
ISO 15118 is the standard that defines plug and charge. The problem is that most car manufacturers don't GAF, charging is someone else's problem. Most charging networks don't GAF, they don't make cars.
There are a few where this works but few cars on very limited networks at present.
It's great to pull into a service station when it is absolutely pissing it down with rain, stand undercover filling your car whilst watching battery-powered car owners getting a good soaking, plugging a high voltage cable into their car. And, umbrellas are a pain in the backside at the best of times, and useless when the wind is blowing hard.
Is Tesla planning on selling it's charger network before they all break down and need replacing, controversial.
I refuse to use an app and I only pay cash, so electric cars are a no go for me.
Most chargers and every new charger installation must accept contact less payments, even Tesla V4 chargers do it’s just that Lee is 5 years old and couldn’t figure out the card reader is just below the charging plug. 🤦🏻♂️

Why did you take up two bays to be awkward. The V4 charger leads are long enough to reach your car, from the correct bay.
Wait until the Muggings / EV Jacking begins.......More charging costs [security guards or systems] EV's will be stolen , stripped , and sold back to EV builders. Chassis Metal or Battery Metals.
Unlike charging stations, petrol stations are usually attended where charging stations are not. You are obviously correct, this is a security issue.

It might be because the kid had to be a certain age/size to be able to have an particular operation.
As has been pointed out on various other RUclips channels, the news article had various false/incomplete information in it to villainize the hospital and glorify the EV owner, so one has to wonder what the 5 year appointment wait is about. Ice cars are easier to put out. The water used doesnt have to be collected and treated and ICE car fires dont burn like electric cars do or can spontaniously combust again , days or weeks later and have to be specially processed when scraping- IE stored at least 15 metres from any other vehicle.
Lee - Most Tesla chargers are not 800V. So with a Taycan you are limited by the onboard 400-800V converter in your car. That's 50kW if you didn't pay porsche for the upgrade. Your slow charging is nothing to do with Tesla, but is actually cos Porsche were cheap on your specs. Sorry ☹
I found it interesting that Quentin Wilson specifically mentioned “Zero Tailpipe Emissions”, which infers that he agrees with you that EV’s do pollute the environment in other ways.
Maybe the reason for the slow charging is because the Tesla software is set up exclusively for Tesla's lol
No my MG4 charges at over 130kw, Lees car always seems to charge really slow. Either that or Porsche just aren't very good at EV's
If you look elsewhere in the thread you find the explanation. It's to do with the Porsche charging system and the voltage. Normally, on an ultrafast charger, the Taycan can do 250 kw, but it's limited on the Tesla system. Someone said there's an adapter on sale that at least partially addresses the problem.
I too have an MG4, the model that has a max charge power of 88 kw, but it will do that on Tesla chargers just fine.
Could you imagine being stuck at all those charging units while on a road trip with a wife who told you not to buy an EV.

@@IanMcc1000 I'm just observing that in my not very economical, 140mph petrol car, I can be on the road then back on the road again after 5-10 minutes having taken on fuel for 350 miles. How long would that typically take in an electric car without burning out or reducing th life of the batteries?
Don't lose sight of the fact that the more cars there are simultaneously drawing power from the grid at a charging station, the slower the charging rate will be for all concerned. The power conduit delivering power to the charging station can only carry so much power. The more cars there are drawing on this 'pipe' the slower it will be. But as always, this is variable.
Enjoyable video Lee, carry on charging 👍 Au
I would think the poor charging rate is your car itself.
No, it's the 50kW DC DC converter in the car that's throttling it. Porsche offer a 150kW version which costs £294.
Porsche forums are all over it, general consensus is "why wouldn't you?!"
It seems that Lee is firmly in the camp of "didn't", which means that when using Superchargers, the experience is absolutely tragic.
An otherwise 15 minute charge instantly becomes 45 mins!
Facelift Taycan introduces a split 400V architecture, thus making the DC to DC converter redundant. No retrofit option for Lee either.
So why didn’t it come as standard on a 120,000 GBP car ? It’s almost as if the EV design and sales teams come from the more stupid end of the factory ,no ?
@@ridbanner1407 The car wasn't £120,000 base price, it was only about £75,000 but he specced it up with about every extra available. (Of course you lose the cost of the extras, and the VAT and so on when you drive off the forecourt, which puts Lee's "depreciation" into some context.) Why didn't he include that converter? Bear in mind he bought the car in October 2021, when as far as I know Tesla chargers were for Tesla cars only, and did anyone anticipate so many of them would be opened up? I guess it just wasn't anybody's priority back then.
My MG4 charges at its maximum speed on Tesla chargers. And as the post above says, the new Taycan doesn't have this problem - with the supercharger network opening up, it's gone from an afterthought to a necessity. Poor Lee!
