Hydrogen embrittlement happens with acids as with the acetic acid in vinegar (5%). This also happens with chrome and nickle plating solutions. Spring steel and even brass are very susceptible.

I was raised in a 100 year old house 60 miles north of NYC. My father was a Tool&Die Maker and he operated a complete machine shop in that basement. The stone foundation had many water leaks which were eventually stopped by using hydraulic cement plugs. To protect his health and his tools he ran box fan air filters and a dehumidifier. How difficult would it be to repair your water problem? I’m concerned that excessive mold could make you sick 🤢. I really enjoy your channel John, you are knowledgeable on so many topics. Take care
The good thing is my leak is directly over the sewer trap so no water remains. I only get water after about 2.5” of rain and that used to be a very rare occurrence. Shifting weather patterns have changed things over time.

Good to know the issue of vinegar and calipers. I have not needed to remove rust on my calipers - so far. Another option for a threaded shaft in the screwdriver handle is red thread locker. Has to be the red "strong" vs the blue "medium". Dave.
I haven't had anything "break" in vinegar, but I have ruined something. I put a J.C. Higgins (Sears) fixed blade knife in to soak and forgot it. When I found it a couple weeks later, the vinegar had etched it really deeply. I can only describe it as "uniform pitting". It was so deep, I didn't go any further; sanding out the pits would have left it as thin as a filet knife. Broke my heart...
I have heard that for some reason free hydrogen can weaken the crystal lattice of some steels. Especially in the knife making crowd. Its such a small atom it can like helium migrate through materials that you would never imagine. In fact liquid helium will leak out of beakers and other containers straight through the walls of the container. It even flows up hill over and out! Its amazing to see, look it up! Im not a chemist so im not sure exactly why but It may be on the quantum level?

17:05 If you want wax paper or parchment paper, Reynold's makes both. Great for making cookies! Place a section of parchment paper on a cookie sheet before adding cookie dough. Easy clean up afterwards, and the cookies don't stick to the cookie sheet. Baking tools is bad! Baking chocolate chip cookies is good! Amazon wraps everything in brown paper, so save that for wrapping.

Good episode today John. Epoxy and a pin. That's never coming apart. That's very interesting about the springs on the calipers. I've stopped using vinegar a while ago because of how aggressive it is. I've done a few calipers with Evaporust and haven't had an issue. It works on a different principle than vinegar so I don't think it's an issue with spring steel.
My Dad would get on my case as a kid whenever I bought crazy stuff however he would never criticize a book purchase. He always said if I learned just one thing it was worth it. 😃👍

Had that Practical Electrical Wiring book since I was a kid too. Think I've gone thru about 2-3 gallons of mineral oil in the last year, if you're ever oiling any old cedar chests make sure and use mineral oil since it's odorless and doesn't change the scent of the cedar.
It's amazing, I have that same book and I've referred to it numerous times. I'm considering making a special screwdriver that I use when working on my radios.

Last week I finally got Mother's car wax. I cleaned up and coated with Mother's 5 ballpen hammers. Waiting to see if they surface rust. Great video. Thank you. P.S., Got to confess, I spray paint a lot of hammer/sledge/shovels to fight rusting. It ain't beautiful like your work, but I cannot see something start rusting the moment I finish a cleaning.
I have lost a knife as well as a cheap imported hammer to viegar so I am reluctant to use it. Evaporust has no effect. I have used it on calipers with no problems. I get mine in a 5 gallon bucket from summit raceing with free shipping. It will set you back but keep the lid on so the water doen't evap and in a cool spot it will last.
I had a friend that told me he would soak chains in vinegar but if he soaked them too long they would weakin them...l never gave it much thought but now you told us about the calipers...🤔 BTW the table behind you...what a total disaster...makes me feel better about my bench tops...anything thats flat is game for stuff to be put on it...but you got me beat...🖖

You’ve make fun of California a few times over the years and what the hell so do I but a few months ago you talked about the pucker factor when cutting down a tree, I lived in San Francisco in 1989 when we had a 6.9. In terms of the actual energy being released during the event, it is about 1024 greater than a 4.9 and at that time you’ll find out what true pucker factor really is. Saty safe my friend.

Andy- If you mix up a batch of 50/50 (automatic transmission fluid and Acetone) flood the bearings and work them good. Blow out excess and spray in some lithium grease. 😃👍
I had it happen with evaporust figured I left them in too long. Question I have is how or where can I find a replacement spring? Can you buy a replacement or how would you form a new spring?
I argue with all the snobs out there over using Evaporust, etc.. But one thing I will concede is vinegar and less aggressive stuff like evapo aren’t good for spring steel. Evapo took off the factory gloss coating on my first Disston hand saw resto, it’s “bad” for nickel plating too in my experience. I use the stuff religiously though.
Hydrogen embrittlement is a phenomenon that causes catastrophic failure of steel when steel is exposed to H plus ions from acids, sometimes. I saw this in industry where bolts under tension would sometimes fail. Cause was determined to be when the bolts were exposed to acids during manufacture or plating. Didn't seem to make any sense, but believe me, it was real.
I almost always use lubricant when drilling except when I know I’m going to glue something in like the pin. I went super easy on the drill so as not to over heat it. 😃👍
Couldn’t you just use red (high strength) Locktite on the threads? No need to mix and probably even stronger than epoxy. Regarding the springs on calipers breaking when soaked in vinegar- I had the same thing happen after I left a set soaking overnight in Evaporust. I posted about it on Facebook and several others confirmed they’d had the same thing happen with Evaporust. Maybe it’s just safest to remove the spring before de-rusting.

There were a couple of post on the Home Machinist Facebook group that guys had the same issue with the caliper springs using Evapo Rust also. I had one I cleaned up and I just used WD40 and fine steel wool to clean the spring up I was too scared to chance it and it was mild surface rust so it wasn't too bad to clean.

Like an idiot, i soaked a stet of rusty thickness gauges in vinegar. When I came back all the thin ones were gone. Lesson learned.

I soaked three pair of calipers and one spring split. I thought it was just fractured before I dunked it in vinegar.

Would you need to secure the screwdriver shaft with epoxy or could you just pin it? Would that be enough for high torque work?
Pinning is enough but sometimes there is a bit of play or slop in the handle and epoxy is great for giving a really good solid feel.

Hydrogen embrittlement is a phenomenon that causes catastrophic failure of steel when steel is exposed to H plus ions from acids, sometimes. I saw this in industry where bolts under tension would sometimes fail. Cause was determined to be when the bolts were exposed to acids during manufacture or plating. Didn't seem to make any sense, but believe me, it was real.

Noticed that you didn't use any oil when drilling thru the screwdriver with the drill press. I guess the aluminum is so soft you didn't need it?
I almost always use lubricant when drilling except when I know I’m going to glue something in like the pin. I went super easy on the drill so as not to over heat it. 😃👍

Couldn’t you just use red (high strength) Locktite on the threads? No need to mix and probably even stronger than epoxy.
Regarding the springs on calipers breaking when soaked in vinegar- I had the same thing happen after I left a set soaking overnight in Evaporust. I posted about it on Facebook and several others confirmed they’d had the same thing happen with Evaporust. Maybe it’s just safest to remove the spring before de-rusting.
I’ve been wanting to do a test on epoxy vs thread lock. It would be interesting to see!

There were a couple of post on the Home Machinist Facebook group that guys had the same issue with the caliper springs using Evapo Rust also. I had one I cleaned up and I just used WD40 and fine steel wool to clean the spring up I was too scared to chance it and it was mild surface rust so it wasn't too bad to clean.
I know you tape ahead of time. But how about that Jersey earthquake!
