Telluride Colorado Backcountry Skiing - The Scariest Line in Colorado

- S9 Peak. North Face.
Colorado had an historic winter season in 2019 which offered some rare ski and snowboard descents. Two days after I returned from a 21 day river expedition through the Grand Canyon, Lorne Glick and I nabbed this especially wild line mid-March in the San Juan Mountains. Lorne smoked me to the top as I pushed myself up the face with weak river rafting legs and bottom of the Canyon lungs. When I got there he told me "This is gonna be the wildest line I've ever skied." I told him I wished he would've waited to tell me that until we were down.
This line has probably seen about 3 other descents all time as it usually looks like a rock climb. Extreme exposure the whole time. Probable first snowboard descent.

The rule is, if it looks scary on GoPro footage then it’s terrifying in person.
Thats so true, i tried taking a pic of a black piste i had done, and the photo looked like nothing, like some green piste.
You bitch slid down the mountain dude
God I'm so tired of these videos like omg I went to this crazy location And skid it, but then in the video you just bitch slide the whole thing
Just don't go do it if that's how you're gonna ski it.
No one cares!
Damn Skippy.
I clicked on this just to talk sht about how easy the line is but for once a ski video was not clickbait. That was truly a consequential line and an absolute you fall you die line.
Same!
Holy shit, dude! This looks so amazing and terrifying at the same time. Video never does the steepness justice. One wrong move here and it's a long way down. love it...well done!
You're right about that! Thanks buddy!
@@austinschneider8996you just brake slid down the whole thing. Who cares
@@John-nk3ejSomebody doesn’t understand extreme exposure technical skiing
Well done boys. The video turned out great really captured the line well. Thanks for putting it out
My guess is the backcountry gate near the top of revelation lift or prospect express.
“Good snow!” Proceeds to jump turn all of it lol. Didn’t look very fun boys, but props to ya.
You would too if it's only 15 ft wide, 40+ slope angle, and with huge cliffs dropping away on both sides! Talk about a no fall zone - this looked crazy af. I do hope they were able to let 'er rip once they got into that wide open lower section you can see in the 'map view'... the snow really did look super good.
Lol at all these arm chair critics that have only seen TGR or Matchstick movies. No concept of the snowpack, navigation, route planning, technique, or anything else.
Sick line. However steep it looks on camera it's always way steeper in real life.
This is amazing. Well done
Wow man!!!! This is so legit!! Actually ridden nicely on the snowboard!!!
Viscerally stunning. So nice I initially watched it twice. I'll be back.
Great skiing/boarding! Well done - and bravely!
Love skiing Telluride, Love that fresh snow.
it always makes me laugh at how much steeper it is than it looks through a camera, like how when you take a picture of the full moon and it still seems small. this is STEEP AS HELL. hat off to you boys, this is no joke.
Truly gnarly. Well done.
Looks like a lot of fun!
This is incredibly. Absolutely daring.
Wow really gnarly. And you guys bootpacked straight up this as well? I don’t know which is more impressive… well done
Thanks man. Yeah, booted it, with crampons. Arguably scarier on the way up. Tried not to look down.
It's a pretty technical hairy line. Boot packing it a smart option and seems you got it in good safe conditions. Nicely riden as well
Looks steep! Nice work buddy.
Thanks Max!
Amazing line. Total respect to the riders in this video. Insane how steep and exposed this looks. Really an impressive run.
Impressive work
I see some brown patches on those pants. Holy cow dudes! Epic!
That's a legitimate big mountain line. Nice to se it being done.
How stupid, but just a nice day in the mountains sliding down the vertical rock. And, jump turns into oblivion are everyone's favorite.
My feet are sweating. What a line.
Lord have mercy I could never. My heart is racing and I’m laying in my warm bed!! It’s straight down!!
nicely done. correction though- that line has been skied and ridden many, many times. I personally did it with my budddy TR back in 91, again with another buddy in 96, CMC Davey, who was on a split board and definitely was far from the first. There is nothing in the Telluride area that hasn't been skied or ridden, especially now that speedriding has come to colorado. i'm going to say that the cross couloir on Holy Cross is the sketchiest line i've skied in 28 years of living, skiing and 22 guiding backcountry here.
Hey, thanks for the info! Can you tell me more? I have more questions than answers from this! Lorne and I have heard similar things a few times before only for it to turn out being different...
@@austinschneider8996I really wish he told you more instead of dropping that comment and dipping out
@@austinschneider8996do you mind sharing what peak this is off? I live in the area and would love to give this a shot
unreal boys
Adrenaline! Boldly going places this man will never go. 😅
I'm sure in days past you'd a been just fine Joe!
Reminiscent of chamonix no fall zone. Sketch!
Sick line
awesome. how'd you know about this line?
I've ridden similar things like this at abasin, putting myself in your boots on this line gives me chills. These runs are not for the feint of heart, many won't understand but there is no option of falling. Falling, even just on your butt going slow, is a death sentence on runs like this.
bro a-basin or any other resort in the world doesn't have anything close to this in terms of steepness and exposure
@@user-do2rb6rp8z guess you've never ridden Gauthier or the steep gullies. It does indeed rival how steep this run is. Several spots at abasin are just as steep if not steeper. Including several areas of Montezuma bowl and several of the hike up spots riding the face into LoG. Not nearly as risky but definitely as steep if not steeper.
@@christopherhasbrouck3935 lol I have. Go use a slope angle shading feature on any good online topo map. You will see that a majority of the steep gullies are in the 35-45 degree range. Gauthier is the same. Yes - there are certain sections where you could push 50 degrees for a few turns on those runs if you take particular lines. Now look up the north face of S9 (38.02518°N 107.89112°W). You can clearly see that a majority of the weaknesses on the face are 50+ degrees with plenty of 60+ degree shading (aka massive cliffs). You are comparing apples to oranges
Really love Telly. Just wish it averaged more snowfall.
amazing skating on the snow magandang tingnan nakaka amaze talaga idol
my god, insane. talk about ZERO consequence
im assuming you have also hit the SKY Choute's? those are fun as hell!!!
Just squirrel suit into the portal so you don’t miss the dragon next time lol. 🔥
So rad. Did you guys post a trip report anywhere?
Nope, this is it
I do back country snowboarding but I know for a fact I’d be shitting myself cameras never do it justice
Looked it up on google earth. 400m of >55° slope angle is insane.
Great line. Pucker factor super high.
sooo cool
Roadrunner is right, it's so steep amazing run
Nothing about that looked like fun
"Wanna go first on this next pitch?"
"..............................................................................................................................................s u r e. "
Respect.
Very exposed. Scary, even on youtube. Thanks for sharing.
Thats crazy steep and hats off to you for doing it but id rather have a nice plush flowy ride down some powder than slide sideways down the steep.
Steepest ever 😳
What line/mountain is this?
S9, North Face, Sneffels Range
Question: Is it worth the near death experience just for the "Woooo-who-s"?
Where in Telluride is this? This is not Bear Creek side across from Telluride so where is this ? Thanks . It’s not Seniors either. Thanks
Now that is a fuckin line!!
Here we slow!
New sub! Liked 😀🙏😛
wow thats steep
Yeah, a fall up as the top of that could be very bad.
Been to T-Ride, never even saw this run, nor would I attempt it. I skied some narly stuff out West but this is hardcore- reminds me of some runs at Jackson Hole, Snowbird and Aspen Highlands. Exciting yes- worth a second brain injury- no thanks. T-Ride has plenty of thrilling, but relatively much safer in-bound runs. Areas like this are also known for avalanches. There was one the day we were there. I think it was a controlled det. but impressive to watch regardless. Literally go snow on me at the lift life and it was over a mile away. The map graphic you used in this vid. was a very nice visual. More people should do that.
That doesn't strike me as enjoyable.
Has Harry Keearny Rode this one yet ?
Thanks shawtys
Avalanche danger way too high. I lived, worked, skiied and climbed in these mountains. This is too dangerous!
Fun fact that’s the coors light mountain
Doesn't look like it. Wilson Peak also isn't in Telluride, although it is visible from there
Why? So many rocks you’re practically hiking down a chute
Why?
holy shit
Yeah I'm good sticking to my groomers
I wouldn't even walk that. In summer with no snow on it.
satisfaction
How can that be fun?
How did you get up there though?!?! Waaaaat? Great riding guys
Its called skiing, you ride a car
They climbed up
Wish there were something really challenging to see that has a lot of moguls and requires skiing without a "death wish." Recommend Wengen area in Switzerland using gondola to top of slope and the run down to Interlaken.
Crawling down a mountain...when does the skiing start?
go pro's do not do it justice
I live here lol
Same lol
What's the point of doing this with with a board if you're not even gonna go fast?
What peak was this
S9 Peak in the San Juans
so exposed...
death defying...
Who the hell walked all the way up or down that slope lol. U can see footprints in the snow
That’s how they got up…
I don't get this stuff. What's the point of going on some ridiculously steep slope just then to essentially step it down? Granted, it is a heck of a cardio workout so respect for that.
Not really skiing when your mostly sliding with the plank strapped to both feet.
You might as well hike down. No skiing or snowboarding involved. Just hopping side to side in fear of their lives
This is what I was just thinking. This didnt look like skiing or snowboarding. I was thinking "if they are just going to hop and slide like this, why dont they just take off their skis and snowboard and walk done". That being said, it's still very extreme what they did. No way would I try that.
Big, big balls, but I'm gonna pass.
Why? All the jump turns into a death trap? No thanks.
That's not skiing.. it's descending on skies.. Jump hopping and sliding is not skiing..Huge difference and people should learn differents
haha somebody does not understand GoPro effect. This line is hella steep so no need to rush it. One wrong move and you will have a terrible outcome. Let me know when you hit a line like this tho!
@@stephenjacoby4650 You are missing the point.. Not saying the like is not sick or extremely dangerous but sliding side or hoping the entire line is not skiing. It's descending on skies.. If he was at least making turns then that would be skiing.. I hate when people say it's skiing because it truly is not.. I have had my share of lines I probably should not have ever done or attempted. Some will understand and some wont
@@Ken-db2hc yeah but you never skied anything this gnarly
@@Ken-db2hc I'm not sure that this line is even safely skiable with the speed that you would generate.
while i respect it, simply doesnt look like fun to me personally.
I’m wondering why you went up there. You didn’t really ski it; you side-slipped it.
id ski safe like that if falling meant death
Do you even ride dude? Think about how much steepness gets dulled on camera and how steep that looks still... Not sure how you expect someone to handle this run but these guys look like pros going down it to me and I'm literally a professional skier.
@@tengonadacluewhatsgutsprec1419 I call bullshit, imma hit up this line in january and actually ski it. without any sort of speed they have no control, and are MORE likely to fall on there ass and slide off the edge. also as a "professional skier" have you never heli skied? british columbia heli skiing makes this look tame as hell.
*side note: Steepness does not equal difficulty, it usually just makes people unnerved, and make mistakes. now this run is narrow and has a couple blind turns i'll give you that, but it is nowhere near as steep as kant-mak. Nor does it have the moguls, or the trees. because those are what kill people-trees.
@@jkill0993 falling off most trails means death, but people go into trees way more often, be scared of trees not heights.
@@Jrwhar i feel like there are also a lot more ppl falling into trees than off cliffs, since the majority of riders will never do anything like this
Looks really scary. I couldn't do it. RIP Hilaree Nelson my hero
Too steep for clean turns - it's only survival! There was zero flow!
Doesn’t seem fun
It's more of the type 2 sort of fun
Doesn’t seem fun at all
Well adrenaline is fun maybe the line not so much
They didn't have the strength for it, ok to push your abilities but this was far over their heads
@@friderckcougher97 I disagree they made it down totally in control so clearly they have the strength and wit's to be there. Speed adds risk and this run is extremely dangerous, slowly hopping along is a great way to ride here that actually requires far more strength than just flowing it out.
that didn't look fun
God, that looks awful.
Both skiers were lucky they didn't catch an edge and die.
Lol you had no business on that mountain period.
Really whats the point if youre gonna just skid your way down
You side slipped it. Thats now "skiing". Lame.
man if they fall they die like 100%
