Great strategy of starting with a pentatonic and altering as as needed. I do the same thing with a mix of the major scale and the specific chord tones of the chord of the moment. On a side note: Have you ever played with pianist Justin Adams? He was an acquaintance of mine through church that I got to play a few times with (although he's on another planet than me skill-wise). Really inspired me to get serious about jazz.
Hi George - thanks for checking it out and leaving a comment. I do know Justin, but not as personally as others. We've done a few gigs together here and there. Great guy and great piano player!
The pentatonic scale looks just like that instrumental line from the Bee Gees' 70s song, "Jive Talking." It also seems like the only kind of scale that they use in oriental music.
The pentatonic scale, as I've said in many of my videos, is a collection of pitches that's used to create melodies in just about EVERY culture in the world.
Hi, this was a nice video. I may be asking for too much but is there an easy way (meaning not too much work for you) that you could add the transcription of the solo underneath as you play. Or even a little something that lights up on the screen when you arrive to your target note? Really appreciate the content. It was very useful the way you explained where to use which pentatonic scale! Please more content breaking down what to use over which type of chord. Thank you !
Thanks for checking out the video. If I had someone willing to transcribe my solos before posting, that's something I could potentially do on future videos. Part of the reason I haven't posted much new content in 2022 is due to not having extra free time to create/edit videos with other demands that have been on my plate. Perhaps at some point in the future that will be something we can explore.
I know you are making videos that can be applied to all instruments, but if you were to put guitar tabs examples on the screen I know your channel would be a lot more accessible and popular among us less classy guitarists lol
Jason ,keep sharing these lessons. Man, very helpful.🎺👍
Thanks for checking them out!
Pentatonics is still underrated! Thanks Jason!
I agree Jonathan - thanks!
Great lesson!
Thank you DJ!
Like the idea of staying with the key center Pentatonic and altering based on chords that are outside of that area.
It has a nice way of keeping melodic statements at the forefront.
Thanks Jason, this helped me see new possibilities with pentatonics. Nice :)
Love to hear - thanks for checking it out!
You make a Good Job! Thanks! In German Language was nice! Subtile Wolldecke nice😉👍🎺
Thank you, Ralf! I hope this added value to your playing in some way...

I've been working on your "Targeting" approach for a number of months and just getting to the pentatonics. Very helpful and motivating.
I'm glad to hear they've been helpful and motivating!
