    If I were the sort of buyer this keyboard is aimed at, one thing I might appreciate at the start of a video like this is some context around what flavor of black boxy keyboard we’re looking at today. For example, this seems to be Roland’s shot at what you might call a “full-size arranger keyboard”, using the zen core engine to create the accompaniment. I might also like to know what an arranger keyboard does and who they’re aimed at (songwriters, buskers), and that it’s competing with the Korg XE and Yamaha PSR lines. Then commence with the sick soulful riffs. Idk, it’s just what this fool believes.

      It’s more a Roland take on the Clavinova, for those that want arranger functions with a fully weighted Piano keybed. The Piano sound seems upgraded. Sound more bright than the usual muddy Roland sound

    As someone that has received a new Roland FP-E50 my review is that it is a great bargain, however I find the bottom placed speakers are weak, which I was able to fix by mounting a pair of iLoud powered speakers... what a dramatic improvement!. It brought the Supernatural sounds to life. It should be noted that the piano sounds are relatively bright, but that allows them to cut through the mix. I like the keyboard action and interface.

      Jack defo had a bit of a pine fest for Remie and fancied her. Remie liked him but didn't fancy him. She pushed off to Spain I think and got stuck there coz of the Covid lockdown. Yes I checked 🤣
      Zencore is nice but not as good as ACB or the other piano technology Roland has. I had the subscription from a roland but found the Zencore piano's weak.

    I understand that your reviews are meant to give viewers the same sense that casual potential buyers would get when they walk into a store, i.e. testing patches, etc. But I have to think that most of your RUclips subscribers are not casual browsers. I think your viewers would appreciate if you go further than simply running through patches and spend much more time exploring the features of the keyboard, its user interface, etc.

    Really good video. Bought this from the ‘Guildford store. Have to say that service was excellent but there was a perhaps a lack of detailed knowledge about the various keyboards. The folks presenting evidently don’t work at the store. But great service.
    It’d an amazing keyboard. Only downside is the down facing speakers. But it’s remarkable value for money. The Bluetooth is useful. The chord display is incredibly helpful!!
    Tried most keyboards in the shop between £600-£1500 and this was absolutely the clear winner in terms of value proposition. Keys are lovely and fairly heavy too. Yamaha so light.

    • @JuanSewDLKS

      I have both. Fp60x has much better speakers, if you compare them side by side the fp60x sounds better, even with headphones, i don't know why. It's built with higher quality components (metal exterior, not cheap plastic lime the e50), more standard piano sounds, fewer weird or funny sounds, it feels like a much better product overall, more premium

    The pianos did sound pretty good. But once the accompaniment kicked in with the Zencore sounds, Roland's age began to show. Those sounds PCM sounds from the early 90's are simply no longer cutting edge. You can only recycle certain sounds for so long. Yes, some "classic" sounds are timeless. But a 300 kilobyte fingered bass sample from 1998 is going to sound really artificial nowadays.

    anyone else feel like rolands sound library is stuck in the 80’s 90’s? Every time i see a video of a new roland product, it always ends up sounding like elevator music or hold music. Believe me, Im a fanboy of roland because im stuck in the 90’s mentally. Ive been studying the fantom 7 for a year and i finally ordered it last week. The next day I got a recommended video for the Akai mpc 61 keys. I had never heard of it. I clicked on the video and i was instantly blown away by the newness of the sounds. The sounds / drums.. just sound so current and fresh. I watched 10 or so more videos then canceled the roland and bought the Akai.

    • @darrickkeels6387
      @darrickkeels6387 Год назад

      Yes Roland reuses their sounds from their older modules and keyboards. The majority of Zencore PCM sounds are simply their old sounds that were in their hardware 20-30 years ago...or more.

      I think most people with an IQ above that of a walnut are more than aware Roland lean towards the past. There is good cultural reasoning behind it and our regard for infantile western preference is waning as fast as our respect for warmongering America itself.
      That aside, you should always know what to expect pre-purchase and if your only concern is modernity/feature set, or some idiotic notion that you can't adequately perform without a quadrillion polyphony (synths and music were quite fine in the 80s thanks -- and I am much younger than that era myself) then thats fine; but be clear that preference is not a need for standard.
      Plenty of professionals can and do like Roland. They are on stages in every corner of Japan and elsewhere. RnD exhaustively work with live musicians at the venues to which they perform. The idea this is not the case, or that the desire is to somehow cheat you out of performance fitting modern times, is demonstrably false and as someone working within that realm ordinarily - flat disrespectful. Our cultures are obviously very different but the hyperbole is irritating at best.
      The instruments are researched and designed with a target user in mind. Which doesn't mean that it's restricted to that -- but it is commonly optimised for such and thats reflected in price. You might say that an old medieval hammer is adequate for knocking in nails. You might say 'If I drop an asteroid on the nail, it knocks it in better. Sure. Both are true. But you use the tool you actually need to remain cost effective and practical. Not all things need to offer everything.
      Roland are never going to make an instrument that pleases everyone. Not every board produced is a flagship and with the way the market is going --- half the desired users wouldn't be able to afford it anymore anyway.
      For the longest time we've enjoyed live, interactive music here. Not the bedroom. Priority to required features (affordable). Component availability (an issue now). Weight. Interface accessibility. The product isn't meant to be 'cram the top end of every feature in'. Because that comes with considerable cost.
      Do pay respect to product purpose. Not simply personal bias and bigoted reference point.

    Compared to other competitors
    Yamaha DGX - 670
    Pros - 4 style variations/ better style programs/ reads PSR style files with 4 variations ( there are thousands if free styles)
    Can write user styles/ more realistic and musical styles that can be used/ can play midi files ( Roland can not)
    40 plus Super Articulation sounds ( best nylon/ acoustic guitars / saxes, etc that Roland or Casio can’t touch)
    Will read midi files ( including Roland ‘s GS and Yamaha’s XG files). Remember most pro GM files are written in GS format)
    Has 16 track sequencer
    Cons- 47 pounds/heavy/ bulky/ GHS keys ( not as good as Roland) . Not gig worthy ( screaming “amateur keyboard)/ no vocal harmony
    / no modulation wheel/ only headphone out/ no separate LR outs
    Korg XE- 20
    Light weight( 25 Ibs)/ terrible key touch and response/ PA80 arranger styles/ will read SMF/ Wav/ Mp3 files but poorly designed for live playback. No joystick/ pitch bend/ mod wheel/ PA 80 arranger styles means 2 fills and jumpy fills / no style writing/ has basic sequencer
    Roland FP- E50
    Pros - great key feel/ individual weights ( key response not as fast as Yamaha’s GHS for fast notes runs due to escapement mechanics for certain patches but great for piano tones
    - better piano tones ( than Yamaha or Casio)
    - pro looking keyboard on stage ( well designed/ no speakers on top or front)
    -individual LR outs
    - Vocal harmony
    - 37 pounds ( lightest pro feel/looking arranger with build in speakers)
    - blue tooth midi and audio
    - chord sequencer
    Cons- Can’t read or write midi files ( only Wav files) . That means you can’t play pre sequenced general midi files with VH data)
    - other sounds ( non super natural tones)are good enough but not great ( especially saxes/ guitars still has Juno Di / Ds quality) . Not super articulation quality
    - arranger feature is afterthought and style are poorly written ( limitations start to appear if you are One Man Band / solo performer)
    - 2 style variations means 1990 era backing with improved sounds ( you will not be able to load even BK3 styles which has 4 variations)
    Overall verdict- There is no competition in the market.great if you need one keyboard that has 88 keys and pro piano sounds and other acceptable sounds with manageable weight that has pitch/ mod wheels . Looks great as well.
    For OMB players;You just have to load wav files and play and sing on top while using real time harmony by pressing chords in real time
    Unfortunate for Casio. Which is still not considered as “pro” looking/ considered KB on stage ( regardless how they improved with the sounds, etc, the stigma is still there). It may take a decade and multiple endorsements.“

    • @joep-jams
      @joep-jams Год назад +1

      The problem with the Zencore engine is that it doesn't use a lot of samples for the piano's. I have only tested it on the MC101 but I got dissapointed, you have usually only 3-4 samples for the keys, and playing really softly is just plain impossible. There are a couple of presets that are decent, but once you start looking into them by playing very dynamically they don't do so well. I'd stick with the supernatural pianos.

      @@joep-jams it's got zencore and supernatural on board - are you saying some of the pianos will use zencore and wont be as nice?

    • @joep-jams
      @joep-jams Год назад

      @@jamesfranklin8825 No, I thought the piano sounds would use Zencore, but they use the Supernatural Engine which is good enough. I think in this case the FP-50 just has the zencore engine to add 1000+ extra presets, but I haven't seen any editing for it. I don't expect it to be there, there are not a lot of buttons on the unit that would allow this anyway (in a useful manner).

    IS THE ROLAND FP-E50 INCAPABLE OF THIS BASIC MIDI FUNCTION IN LOGIC? Although the pre-sales personnel at Roland assured me that the Roland FP-E50 would be able to be played as an external MIDI instrument via the provided USB port, I have not been able to make this happen. I checked with them specifically since I would not have purchased this instrument if it did not have this function. It is an essential function for my music production. My Roland FP7 does this without any fuss at all: lays down a MIDI track from the instrument keyboard and then plays it back through the keyboard via MIDI. The FP-E50 does not do this at all. It will lay down the MIDI track as expected, but will not play the resulting track through the instrument keyboard via MIDI. It concerns me that I think this instrument is not able to play SMF files and that this impacts its ability to play back MIDI via a USB connection to the computer. Any idea if there is a fix for this?
    Reading the Logic Handbook, it says that Logic is able to play any instrument that is detected as having successful MIDI in-and-out connections in the test section of Apple's MIDI Studio window utility. Since both the FP7 and FP-E50 do this without issue, this apparently not in this case. Here is a file showing a comparison of the two keyboards as they appear in Logic as I attempt to carry out this operation. navraton.online/roland_midi_fail/Roland_Fail.html
