Beautiful restoration as you always do. Watching the channel inspired me to restore an 8inch Gedore adjustable spanner which had a half inch gap between the jaws when closed. Taking the spanner apart and cleaning and drilling out the keyway restored the spanners ability to close. Thanks to you I had the confidence to tackle the job, thank you.
Thanks for the correct Ridgid color, Scout. I had been looking for just the right red. Now I know why I never found it. My Ridgid stuff came to me from my old man. Most were NOS before he sprayed them his signature navy blue. Thank God he never got around to the 36 incher; time to bring the others back.
Holy crap I wouldn’t have looked at that wrench twice but after u cleaned the rust off it was beautiful. Looks awesome in the orange. Great video brother! 👍thanks for sharing
So ive never used shellac before but i love the way it looks on the metal. Can i clearcoat over the shellac? Or does it act like a clearcoat to stop the rust. I would just like to preserve that neat look the shellac gives to the metal. Do u prefer the brush on type or spray on type? Thanks again
RIDGID wrenches with patent number 1727623 were sold between 1929 and 1937. This is before the Ridge Tool Company used red for their wrenches. This wrench was originally painted black and you can't get them on Amazon for $20.76.
Square jaw end and no groove on the nut. pre wwII. Repaint it black. I clean and repaint about 6 a year, Sometimes I go red ( rustoium semigloss apple red ) because the customers are more comfortable buying a red ridgid wrench. I should be black.
I love it in the past year I have refurbished 4 pipe wrenchs. I used several different paint colors the Alliis Chalmers orange Was a great match for Rigid Tool Co. and a nice dark blue I found to match the old Crafstsman blue
Hello norherman! I've always liked Chevy Orange, back in the day when you could actually see your valve covers when you opened the hood! Lol. Thanks very much!!! 😃👍
Hello Joseph! That's the first thing I thought! I always liked that color, it has a little red mixed in I think! The only problem is the duplicator is a really fast drying paint and if I want to wipe off the letters the paint dries too fast! Thanks very much!!

Hello Taylor- For this wrench I used Dupli-color "Chevy Orange" because I was trying to match the original color... The problem is that paint isn't as durable as a enamel paint like Rustoleum... I think you are better off with a slower drying enamel paint, it lasts longer... Thanks!!!
With a triangular file, you can dress the teeth in the jaws and give it better functionality. I've done this and it makes a world of difference in the grip of the tool!
Hello Captain! You are so right!!! I usually have to do that on many of the restorations but the teeth on this wrench were in surprisingly great condition! Thanks very much for sharing that great tip!!!!!
those type we have the 'record leader' , but they dont have any springs inside the head, i think its one of their strengths, only 3 parts to the entire wrench, no springs, no pivots to break compared to the other type
Hello Jusb! I picked up a few nice new wrenches, apparently the tilting head or spring assist helped in seating the wrench! Since I loathe plumbing I couldn’t tell you! Lol! Thanks!!!
Hello Charles! I have a really nice cabinet blaster and I NEVER use it! Unfortunately the finish left by a sand or bead blast doesn't look good and unless you go over it with a wire brush afterwards it looks bad. The best this a sand or bead blaster is good for is if you were going to paint the entire object, then it's fine because it leaves a surface that the paint will easily stick to! I paid over $400 for that blasting cabinet twenty years ago and never used it! Go figure! lol Thanks!
I have a 14" (I think, it's outside at the moment) version of this in a lot of pretty bad shape tools I got a few months back. I left it alone for a while because I saw the glimmer of red paint under the grime, and prior experience tells me that there's 3 colors you have to watch out for in particular (though not exclusively) on old objects: White, Red and Yellow, because they were the common colors of lead paint. Mine tested positive for lead using some of the 3M swabs, so please be careful. PS: It's possible the positive came from old lead pipe residue on the wrench, being that the previous owner would be in his 120s now, but I'll need to get some more swaps to check. That old paint is SERIOUSLY tough, and I'll need to put another coat of Lead Out paint remover on the remaining bits that wouldn't clean up. Though it's possible I just left too much grime on for it to work properly the first time around. I'm not looking forwards to it as that paint stripper degrades plastics, even nitrile gloves won't keep it off your hands...
Hello John! It depends, usually I don't shellac over polished parts, I almost always shellac over any part of the tool I will be painting, Shellac is a terrific primer and really sticks to metal, then the paint can adhere to the shellac much better then bare metal! Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!
Hello Charles! I'm sorry I'm not sure I understand the question... Most times I shellac the entire wrench and then just tape up the parts I don't want painted, then I spray the whole wrench with paint! I think the Duplicolor is lacquer but I really prefer Rustoleum because it dries slower... Thanks very much!!!
“Bob’s your uncle”! I don’t know how I missed that the first time I viewed this video. Ever since I moved from Westchester to the Capital district, if I say “Bob’s your uncle” I get some really confused reactions. Guess it is a regional expression :)
From one capital district resident to another, I would totally know exactly what you meant if you said, “Bob’s your uncle.” I do believe that we are probably in the minority though.

Exactly the video I was looking for. Just saw a 48" steel Ridgid for CAD$50, going to get it, and restore it now!

Awesome! 😃👍
That turned out excellent so beautiful I’m not sure I’d even want to use it after this.

I like rustolium semi gloss apple red. closer to the 50s 60s red.

Excellent work ScoutCrafter! You can't tell it was ever rusted.

Outstanding! Now is the time to clean out your dad's bucket of pipe wrench's. Your right the orange is a good color for tools and engine's.

Stephen- Enamel is the key, lacquers dry fast but chip easy on tools... The slower the cure the longer it lasts! =)
Huge difference, looks better than new!
Hello Pappy! This was a quick one- at $21- New it’s hard to put a lot of time into restoring such a tool... but it’s good practice! Lol. Thanks! 😃👍
Nice work, thanks for sharing.
How does the spring go back in? I took my old wrench apart and it’s not too obvious how the spring was in there
When you say shellac, exactly what substance/material did you apply to the metal?
Great vid. Love the Ridgid pipe wrenches. Restored a set for my son very similar to yours. Wish there was a way to post a pic.
