      @@jootai The 450 is more rev happy but the 500 makes more torque lower in the rev range so even if you find yourself a higher gear than you'd prefer, you can just feed the power on and throttle out.
      Boatloads of fat lazy power that is surprisingly tractable.

Knock on wood beside the normal Maintenance valve adjustments and filter changes its been rock solid. Ok so, I’m nearing 60 and have about 50 years of riding experience with the last 3 years on my 500exc. It has 8,000 miles on it that includes Motocross, Hare Scrambles, Cross Country races and treks, mountain riding, ice racing and riding, Supermoto hooliganism and of course the sissy ribbons. It is hands down the best bike for every kind of riding there is! I traded up (huge weight reduction and far better capability) to it from my 690 Dakar Rally that I raced in Africa, toured Europe, the UK and Canada on. I can keep up with kids on their 450’s on Motocross tracks (though I’m still scared to triple it!). What it’s not so good at is long distance travel at high speeds and with the 2x4 seat! For those rides, I have a 990 now.

      I regret the tag Old Man’s Bike. This is a subtle put down coming from racers and fast guys. The 500/501 has a different mission and a much broader performance envelope. Well built, quality components, longevity, big useable power, and surprising comfort and economy are the hallmarks. Not everybody is a racer, but few can ride this bike to it’s potential. The fact that it is plated is gold. Guys ride these around the world. It’s no KLR.

    You spoke at length about the mods you made but very little about the bike and it’s intended mission. I know you need to acknowledge your sponsors but this comes across as product placement. The previous generation was 2013-2016. The 2017+ new gen bikes share very little and are much better trail bikes: 10 pounds lighter, lower CG, better suspension, and most importantly have a smaller rider triangle that fits shorter riders better.

    • @RMZ298
      @RMZ298 5 лет назад +2

      The new bikes don't feel that much different, most the weight savings was the switch to a lithium battery and removing the kick starter. The spinning mass of the engine has a way larger effect when riding. It was a much much bigger jump when they went from the 530 to 500. When I demo'd the new bikes I actually like the last gen better, the new ergonomics are too compact on the new ones, but sounds like KTM is opening it back up.

      It is ridiculous. But keep in mind that your $500 in 1978 is the equivalent of $2000 today. Also. I've seen used 2013 500s in the $4000 range. It's definitely twice the bike for twice the price. But $12,000 for a brand new dirt bike is asinine

    This bike is no longer street legal. For some it doesn’t matter, but for many of us that destroys the opportunity to use it as a light adventure bike or to connect separated trails. If you only intend to ride offroad, a new gen 450 can be had that weighs 25 pounds less, handles much better, has better suspension, and has a better power to weight ratio. This bike cost $8000 before mods. A reasonable guess as to the cost of the engine overhaul and all featured mods is $6500 or so, depending on whether the owner does all the work properly himself. You are now looking at $14,500 for a 7 year old bike of non current design. Not a good investment. Better off buying a new one, riding it 6 years, and then selling it for 60-70 percent of what you paid. The first 200 hours are the best on any bike.

    I have had a 2013 500, a 2014 and now a 2017. without a doubt the 17 my favorite. After getting rid of a few parts and opening it up. and dropping the rear suspension about an inch. The balance and power are unreal. I agree fully stock 500s are more powerful. The newer 500s feel so much more slim in the trails. Riding dual sport on a 500 is the only way to go. If you truly ride hard single track a 500 is the best bike money can buy.
