  • LNER A4 60009 Union of South Africa was at the helm of The Railway Touring companies railtour " The Cumbrian Mountain Express " . The train started at London Euston with 60009 coming on at Carnforth for the leg over Shap bank to Carlisle .The return would see the A4 take the Settle and Carlisle line with the steam coming off at Farington junction. The first shot see 09 hammer through Oxenholme with the chime whistle screaming away and thanks to the guys at Willans for letting me film from their yard ( the two photos at the start must be something that was part of the old sidings ) . The return sees the A4 at Cumwhinton near the foot crossing and finally Smardale and Waitby rock cutting . Best watched in 1080hd . Thanks to Stu for updates .

    Cracking set of shots Steve and a nice touch with the chime whistle from the crew.
    Cheers Phil.

      Thanks Phil , as you know I normally avoid stations like the plague but thought I would ask the staff at Willans if I could film from behind the fence. The whistle was superb just think I maybe should have zoomed in a touch . Cheers Steve

    Super footage Steve, with no 9 on fine form. I suspect Mr Cameron may have been on board given the full use of the whistle
    Have a good trip on Wednesday

      Thanks Mike , I did wonder if the boss man was onboard LOL . Could be a weasel job on Wed if the firefighters have there way with the blasted strike .

    Superb video Steve 1st shot was great with all those whistles and nice of them at Willans to get that clip. The last 2 clips were fantastic above advantage positions. All well captured. (C&A)

      @TheStephengthompson  10 лет назад

      Thanks C&A , don't know what happened to the tripod as it was showing the pylons as being plumb but it must have moved on the gravel . Long time since I have done the last two shots so I was pleased with the results. Steve

      Thanks Austin , not sure what happened with the tripod going out of plumb for the first shot just think I should have zoomed in a tad. She was making a fair old noise at Cumwhinton I must admit plus only me there fighting with the nettles and other nasties !

    Lovely video Steve on a fine day with UoSA in fine form. Oxenholme is a great spot to film steam locos at and that blast on the whistle was spine tingling! Liked all the other clips, although I liked the sound and effort at Cumwinton. Thanks. Ken

    Great work as ever Steve, the a4 sounding superb in all of your shots. Some great locations as well. I didn't have the best of luck with yesterday’s tours, just wasn't my day! At least I got some good performances from 45699 the previous week. Thanks for sharing - Sam

    Great video, I love the A4s. But in my personal opinion even though the A4s look great in BR Green (especially Union of South Africa) it's not what comes to my mind of an A4. I much prefer the A4s in LNER garter Blue or BR Blue. That's just my opinion.
    Once again Great video.

    I couldn't help but notice that when British engines run the mainline, the travel fast and without a diesel helper but American trains always run with a diesel helper and often run a bit slower. Great train and great vid. British steam engines are the best.

    • @TheStephengthompson
      @TheStephengthompson  10 лет назад

      Thanks for the very kind comment . British steam tours tend to have a diesel on the rear in the summertime due to the high fire risk and they are sometimes right behind the steam loco with the diesel doing 90% of the work . Regards Steve

    Question Please can you say how you got sound, was i just on board camera mic if so what camera or did you use a external recorder track side and add in the edit
    best regards

    • @TheStephengthompson
      @TheStephengthompson  9 лет назад

      Hi Simon , I use external microphones ( Rode video mic ) inside Rode windshield blimps that connect to the cameras with 3.5mm shielded cabling for better sound quality as the Rode mic picks up sound far better than the cameras inbuilt mic . Regards Steve

    Considering that it's only about 30 mins away (10 by overpriced bus and then 20 by reasonably priced train) I really need to go up to Oxenholme more often.

    Experienced driver me thinks, there's a lack of huge amount of smoke bellowing from the stake, usually down to the drivers ability I've read.

    ah i thought you might be using radio mics
    my brorther is a very good sound guy will seek to him about this way thank you for your time.
    Do you mean you run long lengths of cable back to the camera via a 3.5 jack

    • @TheStephengthompson
      @TheStephengthompson  9 лет назад

      Hi Simon , I sometimes have the Rode mic attached on top of the camera in the shoe but normally I use a long 3.5 jacked cable to the camera with the blimp lying on the floor about 3m away .

    Beautiful to behold. From an age when trains knew what they were, and were without the modern identity crisis of painting themselves bright blue and sticking garish company logos all over themselves.
