  • Speech! (Clare and Friend)
    “The Denza Dance Band”
    (Actually Harry Reser)
    Columbia 3817 (UK)
    (78 rpm record)
The first of two “comic songs” for today.
This is the flipside of the title, “Sweet Man” that I uploaded yesterday. This is a United Kingdom release of a 78-rpm record that was issued as “The Denza Dance Band. However, this is actually “Harry Reser’s Syncopators.” Harry Reser is arguably the greatest banjo player in history, but he isn’t heard much on this side, either.
Johnson & Shirley (American Dance Bands on Record and Film 1915 - 1942) gives the following personnel:
Harry Reser (banjo, director); Tommy Gott, Hymie Farberman (trumpets); Sam Lewis (trombone); Larry Abbott (clarinet, alto sax); Unknown 2nd alto sax; possibly Bill Wirges (piano); unknown brass bass; Tom Stacks (drums).
Singer Billy Jones does the speech.
Recorded New York, September 1, 1925.
Image from discogs.com. Transcribed 20+ years ago. This record was a little pretty rough. I did the best I could to reduce surface noise by using Vinyl Studio software.

Lordy I had this record back in the 1960s. Nice to hear it again. Thanks!
