    I agree, a blue level meter on a channel being fed by loopback would be fantastic. Go a step further and make an entire color pallet available where you could select any other color aside from the standard green being used by the regular i/o

    Ingenious solution of different color meter for "virtual" (love that word) input. Perfect idea.

    Yeah, Barry you’ve been doing us all a serious solid by getting technical on routing. As somebody who uses multiple interfaces and a Pulse 16, I appreciate this video very much. And i hope i’m not the only listener who has wasted actual hours with eyes closed and my chin in my hands trying to think through routing solutions in my head. Please don’t let me be the only one …

    Page 87 of the UFX+ manual explains the loopback feature. In your example using MADI to feed itself, the loopback is functioning precisely how the literature describes the loopback feature should function. What it doesn't explain is that a potential feed back issue can occur from adjusting the hardware input fader and activating the channel, especially with compression. Of course this is all as clear as mud because TotalMix appears to be a mixing board due to the faders. It is so not a mixing board as you have pointed out. Cheers!

  • @SomebodyPickaName
    @SomebodyPickaName Год назад +4

    Edited for clarification: At the end of the day, it's easiest to think of all the faders in the input section (top row) to be SEND levels...to the selected output. So instead of thinking about the input faders as volume faders, you're starting with all the faders all the way down, then you push them up as the send level into the output that you're currently working on. So if not thinking about it as a send, then it's simply a "mix for the selected output." So turning the fader to nominal gain (0db) would send the entire signal to that output, vs sending a little, etc. Even if technically, it's a volume fader for that specific output, it's easier to think of it as a send, since you're sending the signal to the output, the more you push the fader up. And all the way down means not sending it at all to that output.

    • @unitedsouthenterprisesllc
      @unitedsouthenterprisesllc Год назад +1

      If the top row faders are sends why do they have send faders on them?

    • @SomebodyPickaName
      @SomebodyPickaName Год назад

      @United South Enterprises LLC those are FX sends - click the wrench icon, it expands, and you'll see an FX Send knob. That little fader you're describing and the FX Send knob control the same thing.
      The main faders are send levels to the outputs that are selected and showing under each fader. Which is why they are all turned down by default. So that you only push the fader up to add it to the selected output.

    • @unitedsouthenterprisesllc
      @unitedsouthenterprisesllc Год назад

      @@SomebodyPickaName Bro do you know what a send is? Used for? Sends are entirely used for side chaining or sending to reverb etc… You clearly haven read the manual or understand the signal flow of total mix. All input channels run to AN 1/2, the fader is just to listen to your input audio if you want, if you have a mic and turn the fader down you won’t hear your mic. You’re saying the inputs are sending audio to the outs makes no sense. All channels are routed to the master just like any DAW.

    I like the idea of changing the color of the meter on the loopback input (MADI 31/32) in your example. If RME hasn't already thought of that, it is a great suggestion. They may however have reasons for not doing it. I don't know. I wouldn't necessarily call it a FAIL. Great video and really helpful explanations. Watched all three of them and learned a lot. Thank you.

  • @seanwool

    I couldn't agree more about the metering. In fact, I would rather they just allow you to deal with looped back audio exactly as if it is physically connected, ie normal metering and the ability to route to the rest of the mixer. It would be great for submixes in certain settings. RME said they are worried about feedback, which is valid. But just listen to Barry. Don't turn up the hardware input faders until you are ready!

    Thanks for all the TotalMix videos. You’ve done a great job and I say this as a happy UFX owner for many years. The point you made here about not seeing I put levels of some sort during a loop back is spot on and this caused me much frustration in the learning process. We really could use some sort of indication of what the loopbaback routing is doing. Your suggestion was excellent. Thanks again for the whole series!

    I don't find it confusing that there is no level on the physical 31/32 inputs because that is a fact. You've got input only on the software playback 31/32. Why would it show level on a totally different input? I think the problem is that you're seeing the inputs and outputs as part of the same channel as on a physical console, which is not the case at all here. You've got 32 hardware inputs, 32 software inputs and 32 outputs. Some of those share the same number but that doesn't mean anything really.

    • @easystreetphoto2401

      came to say the same. there's nothing on those input channels, it'd be confusing to have something showing there.

  • @rockporttigger7138

    Great explanation. Per the previous vid, you did not show the matrix on loop back. I'm considering RME products integration. For the price and quality for these price-points they seem like a solid quality backward and forward compatible supported addition. Based on my understanding of this solution the loop back should populate in the matrix despite no level light or any indicator led. This is obviously an oversight on RME dev. That's a simple fix on their C++ end. I concur on your advice. Please advise. Thanks!

    Hey Barry. I'm attempting to directly record computer audio into my DAW via ADAT inputs 1/2. I'm getting signal, but I can't get it to stop feeding back when Loopback is on. Anything that eliminates the feedback also mutes the signal. I realize this question may be a little dumb... hopefully the answer will be too!

    @frostboxsoundsystem 6 месяцев назад

    Thanks for those very helpful videos on TotalMix!
    But personally I think it is absolutely correct that the physical inputs don't show a level in the case shown here - because that's a fact. So what if you DO have a signal coming in at MA31/32 but you are not using it. At the same time you could have the same exact routing as shown by you. In this case the levels of the software playback MA31/32 and looped outputs MA31/32 would show the their levels. But if you would also show a blue level on the input MA31/32 then you couldn't see the real signal coming in on the physical output...

    • @BarryJohns
      @BarryJohns  6 месяцев назад

      Based upon my workflow, the two would never exist at the same time. The only reason I would use available, unused outputs, because I need to do internal routing. So I’m never gonna be in a situation where I’m gonna need to route two sources to the same channel. if a channel is being used or a plan to be used, I simply would just pick another available unused channel. Also color coating them differently, distinguish what it is.

    Would this be a valid approach for re-amping channels partricularly through something like my Cranborne 500ADAT. Especially if I don't want to add physical patch panelling to my studio rig?
    I.e. leave a 500 channel set up on the output of say ADAT 1/2 but then loopback from IO 3/4 to ADAT/1/2 when resessioning my guitar layer?

Can you show us how to work with TotalMix when using only two Hardware-Inputs (Mik + Instrument) and one Software-Input (Yt-Sound) from Computer? Then Monitor and Headphones as Outputs. you don't need another daw to record audio from nuendo and your voice. just use control room, send to a separate output the whole mix and set your talkback to permanent activation, but be sure that talkback deactivates when you press play or record. then you can use that separate output on your OBS or screen recording software .

I long time ago I wrote to RME several times asking them to create step by step tutorials just like Universal Audio did with their apollo twin tutorial (ruclips.net/video/-tKMgnkPxXY/видео.html) but I never got a reply.
