Hilling Container Potatoes: How to hill container potatoes for greater production!

- When growing potatoes in containers, should they be hilled or should the container be filled with all the soil needed at the time of planting? I don’t know if there is a right or wrong answer to this question. However, this spring I am going to take the advice of Wood Prairie Family Farms and “hill” my containers. So, since some of my containers already have 6” to 8” of growth, I am adding soil to cover most of the foliage. Then, in another couple of weeks I will top off my containers with a thick layer of straw to mulch them.
I hope you find something useful in this video. Share in the comments if you’ve gotten your potatoes planted and if you’re growing them in containers. All the potatoes I am growing are early or mid season potatoes. Additionally, they are determinate potatoes. This means they are only going to produce tubers along the first 6” - 8” of growth up from the seed. So my ‘hilling’ is primarily meant to ensure that the sun light does not reach any of the tubers and result in them ‘going green’ and becoming contaminated with solanine.

Potatoes looking great there Scott, once they've broken through this next soil start feeding them some banana tea, giving them potassium will encourage potatoes to form 😉😁🌱☀️
Never used banana tea before. I assume you just leech banana peels in water?

We hill indeterminates but not determinants
