September Figs are STILL Producing!
This is a quick look at the fig trees I have still in various stages of production. The video was filmed on Sunday, September 29, 2024. A lot of these trees, even many of the first year trees, are pumping out a 2nd main crop! It has been an excellent year for figs in my part of SE Texas, zone 9a - just NW of Houston. Climate wise, we are still hitting the low 90s during the day with upper 60s to low 70s at night. It has also been very dry with low humidity for quite some time now. In fact, we are actually behind on our rainfall totals right now by 6+ inches. My trees have had no fertilization since July but still seem to be producing quite well. I know I won’t be able to get all the fruit...

Think Inside the Box - Planting Figs in Clay Soils
Просмотров 214Месяц назад
I live in Zone 9a in SE Texas. I am growing my figs in a suburban neighborhood just NW of Houston. The soil in my yard has several feet of clay under just a few inches of topsoil that holds the sod in place. This presents some real challenges for planting figs in ground. Unless I dig several feet deep, all the way through the clay, any hole dug in the clay will not drain and that is a problem f...
Easy Air Layering - Simple Steps for Success!
Просмотров 7283 месяца назад
Here is the process I use for air layering my fig trees. Air layering is not voodoo or sorcery! It is a great way to create a clone for your fig tree (or just about any other kind of fruit tree). An air layer, once rooted, gives you a significant jump start on the growth of a fig tree. Ideally, a branch should be at least the thickness of a pencil or maybe a Sharpie. It is also possible to air ...
Air Layer Success!

About 3-4 weeks ago I set about a dozen air layers on several of my fig trees. Well, some of them are ready to be removed from their mother trees and potted up! Air layering is a fantastic way to produce clones of your successful fig trees. It is very easy to do. I will put out another video sometime in next week or so showing how simple it is to set up air layers. The day I set these it was ra...

Here is a quick comparison between two different sizes of containers that I am using for my fig trees. Since I live in suburbia and don’t have a lot of space to put all my trees in ground, I have to use containers. Ultimately, the trees will end up in either 10 gallon containers or 25 gallon containers. The 25 gallon containers are protein tubs that I get from friends and family who run cattle....

I up-pot three fig trees in this video into square 10 gallon pots. I use the potting mix that is a 5-1-1 blend. This potting mix is discussed at length in an article posted on figbid.com. Any back ups for sale? I saw a couple I don't have.
@@toddhawthorn3553 which one(s) are you interested in?
Angelito, Galicia Negra, Randino, Ciliegia Dolce,
@@toddhawthorn3553 of course, all four you mention that I have are all single trees - the only ones I have. I may be able to get a few cuttings from my CD as it has a few extra branches that will need to be thinned.
Do plant roots eventually make their way thru the card board into the clay soil?
@@zubairhassan1258 yes, they will!
Awesome video! Great info!
I love this video. It is easy to understand and follow for a newbie. I just bought 2 fig trees for the first time two weeks ago in 5 gallon buckets (Ronde de Boudreaux and Smith). I am totally new and trying to learn as much as I can. Is there a best time to air layer (zone 6b Harrisburg, PA) or can it be done anytime? Also, can you make a video on how to prune for the winter?
@@sarahhoover2069 thanks for watching! Air layering is best in spring and summer. You will run out of time for your growing zone in another month or two. The two figs you got are fantastic varieties! Are you growing them in containers? The Smith will for sure need protection from your winter. To answer your last question, you don’t really need to prune going into winter, once the tree goes dormant, because of winter, you may want to do some pruning. Be careful over pruning the Smith. They can get wonky if you overprune them. Where I live, Zone 9a, SE Texas, we don’t get much of a winter…usually. Look for a guy named Ross Raddi or Ross the Fig Boss on RUclips. I think he lives in Philly. He is a walking, talking encyclopedia of fig knowledge. He will have lots more information relative to winterizing figs.

Beautiful cutting there Scott, well done. I'm putting out my 2 Avocado trees that I grew from seed 2 years ago, one is about 5ft tall the other is about 3ft tall. I also have first blossom on my fruit trees this year, also grown from seed 3 years ago. I've got some young Grape vines that I will take cuttings from next year and have sown some Wisteria this year that have germinated so it's all looking good 😁🌱☀️
What kind of avocado trees do you have?
@@greyghostgardening5353 I have no idea, I was given the nuts to grow but they have different foliage so not the same variety. They are healthy, I overwintered them in the house and gave them rainwater, their trunks are starting to wood at the base now and I've potted them up with my own compost, the look very happy 😁🌱☀️
How many did you plant to yield that amount?
It looks great . But I’ve seen people Poke holes in their containers they say it gives it air and it helps them grow better and bigger and I’ve seen it they were really big potatoes too
My phone heard me asking someone if they thought my son in laws fig tree had survived our winter in NC. And here is your video with great info. Thanks
Great to see your Avocado trees doing well Scott 😁🌱☀️
I just found your channel, and enjoyed watching you gather your harvest. What I could see of your garden, is absolutely, beautiful. Unfortunately, I have to watch on an old tablet, and the sound is too low, and the music, although is nice, Makes it harder, to hear you speak. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it enough to subscribe. Thank You, for sharing.

Potato plants have the ability to grow roots anywhere soil touches the stems. Stems will grow more potatoes every where stems grow more roots. Stems will grow new potatoes at 2 or 3 or 4 different levels it depends on how high up you hill the plants. I usually get 1 lb of new potatoes from each level. If I don't hill potatoes I only get 1 lb of new potatoes from 1 plant. If I hill soil up high enough to have 4 levels I get 4 lbs of new potatoes from each plant. If a seed potato has 4 eyes and grows 4 plants with 4 levels it will grow 4x4=16 lbs of new potatoes. Tall 12" hills are a space saver more new potatoes per square foot of garden space. I sometimes plant like you do 100 plants produce 100 lbs of new potatoes, easy to plant, easy to harvest. 25 hilled plants produce 100 lbs of new potatoes.
What variety of potato do you plant?
@@greyghostgardening5353 I have very good luck with Red Pontiac, Kennebec, Red Norland.
I can only give you one tip from experience... WATER WATER WATER... especially the ones in grow bags.. when potatoes reach the stage where the tubers are forming, they need tons of water... but they also need a well draining medium.. If you give plenty of water, they will make much larger tubers.
Good video footage but couldn't hear your commentary over the music 😢
Welcome Back Scott. Thank for the tips.
Dfw area herei have tomatoes growing in my garden now cherry and romas
Great harvest🥔
What a nice pool you have!!!
Love the video and the handsome Wei. Our Wei girl protects me from little lizards and possible frog attacks in the vege garden. She does occaisionally disappear with self serve harvested sweet potatoes, snow peas and any cherry tomatoes in reach. Its late Spring down under and our Grey Ghost has discovered the pole beans. We dont mind, we just plant an extra couple for her to snack on. Funny, the first time she tried a cucumber, spat it out, not to her liking at all, so we plant them in easy to get at spots and tuck things we want safe behind them. Best dogs ever.
I liked that you introduced your dog. I'd say you have a pile of potatoes!
OMGOSH, you had an AMAZING haul! 😍🌱🥰 You just reminded me I got four containers I still need to harvest. 😂 We just had our first frost today.
Scott, I hope you doing well am wondering if you have any video coming any time soon.
Our heat wave here in Texas has finally broken. I am just starting to plant fall veggies. At my house NW of Houston we had 58 days out of 61 with temps 100+. In fact the average temp for month of August was 102! Heat index as high at 117. I have been struggling just to keep anything alive. During this time, we’ve only had 1/2” of rain to boot. But that is behind us now and I’ll try to get something creative and hopefully informative out.

In the last frame you look like Bert in Big Bang Theory! Would be nice to know your USDA grow zone and latitude. Too hot to grow a second crop?
I’m in 9a, just northwest of Houston, TX. I am going to grow potatoes again in the fall. It’s wayyyy too hot to grow potatoes in late spring/summer where I live.
Hi from Houston! Your soil looks EXCELLENT! However, I have seen others use those containers and get much more yield. Do you think it's our CLIMATE that blocked your production on some of your containers or do you have something to teach us about 'Mistakes' you may have made? Fertilizer, watering, variety, timing, placement, etc... I am always interested in Homesteaders/Gardeners in my own State no matter where because we face many of the same CLIMATE issues. Be blessed.
I think variety plays a big role. I have been trying many different varieties the past couple of years to see which produce best. Red Norland is far and away the best for our area in my opinion. I had excellent results this year with Yukon Gold…but they were planted in ground. I think here in SE Texas you had better plant super early. I’m still learning with the containers, trying to find the right balance of moisture, soil composition, and fertilization. Watch my videos from this spring’s harvest. The first was disappointing, but the 2nd was pretty good. I harvested over 150 lbs of potatoes from my containers and a 4’x8’ raised bed. I was pretty satisfied with that. I’m going to see if I can coax a few potatoes out of my fall garden this year. What kind of potatoes do you grow?
@@greyghostgardening5353 Haven't tried potatoes yet, looking to more 'experienced' growers (like yourself) to ensure my little bit of money gets the best yield. Tomatoes, Peppers, Lettuce & Squash are very successful for me. Can't get 'Cucumbers to grow to save my life lol'. I had a mishap with containers recently, (health issues forced me to try something else) but I think that was my SOIL. Everything grew beautifully for a while and then suddenly DIED... no Pests or diseases! Perhaps OVER FERTILIZATION because I 'babied' those containers too much! Thank you for responding, I subscribe to all SUCCESSFUL Texas Homestead/Gardeners... much continued success to you!
May also be certain times of the year when 'grocery brought' potatoes DON'T sprout for you so you have to know your grocery cycles and about SEASONAL growing and HOW FAR your store is shipping IN it's produce. But for those who CAN'T buy 'Seed Potatoes', many Gardeners/Homesteaders, both here in the US and abroad have proven *_you can_* grow potatoes from Store brought stock. But for all the reasons he mentioned and most of those guys would testify, if you can get a good ORGANIC supplier, that's best.
I grow store bought potatoes as I don't get seed potatoes.
Houston hails ya! You spent money for that SOIL (I bet it was amended and Compost & other things added in) so get yourself some of those CHEAP blue tarps to dump your containers onto so you don't lose your money. Right now, as a 'dude', your thinking 'Well I can afford... *_i, i, i!...'_** NO!* _Hard times come to everyone_ don't throw away your money. You can 'sterilize, amend and reuse that soil.' I see a GOOD HARVEST, congrats!
Mmmmm...that looks so delicious, I'm going to make that as soon as our blackberries are ripe, we have another 4weeks to wait 😱🤣🌱☀️
Four more weeks!!! Oh my, that is a long time to wait☹️
@@greyghostgardening5353 yes, but then once you're berries are finished mine will still be producing, it's the way of the world 😁🌱☀️
Might want to try a tarp next time
Canning potatoes are great
😂🏃🏾♀️🏃🏾♀️😂Im ready
The reason the potatoes are so small are likely due to being over watered and/or just too wet to often. Potatoes should only be watered in a container like that a few times a week once the foliage is up. Also you can boost your harvest by adding agricultural lime to the soil when you plant. Good luck on your next batch!
New subscriber here. Loved the video content! I dump my potatoes out onto tarps when i grow them in containers. What soil do you use? Thank you for sharing your wonderful gardening journey. 🥬🍃🌾🌿🥗
I make my own soil. Equal parts organic potting soil, organic compost, and peat. I also add a big dose of bone meal at planting and a 2nd time about 1/2 way through the expected grow period. Thanks for watching!
Thank you, first timer on growing potatoes. I am in Florida, 9b, will start in October.
Did you allow the plants to die completely back ? Those last 2-3 week are important for the growth of the taters. It’s best to allow them to die completely for optimal growth.
Yes, some were completely dead, and some were 90% or so dead. I really believe part of the issue with some of these containers was that they were packed in too close to one another, we’re of various sizes, and some (smaller ones in particular) had their vegetation smothered by plants from larger containers after a couple of early storms beat them down.
You got a good harvest, enjoyed the video. Just Subbed.
too many seeds planted for area, you worried too much about spuds getting wet as long as its not weeks it wont hurt,we harvest when its wet they just need to dry before storing
still very poor compared to mine i grow in ridges, i leave maincrop from april to end of september by that time tops have well died off and skins hardened
Where are you growing? My plants won’t survive the summers where I live.

thats disappointing a poor harvest potato wise how long were they growing ,aslong as tops are alive potatoes should grow if enough nutrients and water
Not too bad. I had good results when I sprinkled a tablespoon of sulphur and the same amount of chicken manure over the seed potatoes in the container before covering them with soil. Love watching you playing in the ground! Mavis Re

Thanks for watching and a huge thank you for subscribing! Where do you garden?
@@greyghostgardening5353 I am in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. drought, and now cold and rain makes for an unhappy garden
G'day from Australia your carola (sp?) spuds are heavy feeders ( they need a lot of food , more than the average ) and wont grow unless you have a LOT of nutrients , cow manure works good horse or sheep works well if you add some ashes and super phosphate 15% moo poo added to soils that are nutrient rich works well , we grow exclusively in 10 gallon buckets here as we are in the little desert region of Australia and these are a lovely spud if you keep the food up to them , feed through the season as well to get the best yield, best of luck next season ! cheers from the outback
Many thanks for the info on the Carola!
Nice haul! Here in the U.K. my potatoes won't be ready for a good while yet. I also grow in containers with varying results depending on the seed potato variety. One thing that I have learnt over the years is using a pelleted organic chicken fertiliser works really well as far as feeding the growing tubers, I've had some surprisingly good results with it. Nice video, happy gardening.
I have never tried pelleted chicken fertilizer. I will certainly look into that! What part of the U.K. Do you hail from?
