    "i will conquer a cool castle and assert myself as viserys' heir and be an epic dragon king to make the people i love pay attention to me" is almost the exact same move he pulled with dragonstone in season 1, daemon is lashing out because he's frustrated he pushed himself away from rhaenyra and he's forced to confront his deepest insecurities. this is consistent with his previous behaviour.

  • @medimed4772
    @medimed4772 5 месяцев назад +36

    some context for the daemon scenes, old wood (trees with faces) are said to contain the souls of the dead and the riverlans are full of old wood, so it's a nice touch that when he chops wood he hears screams as if chopping into the dead themselves, or that he has visions of his dead mother who he never knew, old wood are said to give visions, which they do in GOT to bran, but targaryens are especially susceptible to these visions as they are a mystical bloodline and are renowned to be dreamers (aegon the conqueror, viserys and haleana had dreams that prophesized the future), yet daemon always ridiculed his brother's affinity to dreams calling them 'silly dreams'.
    these visions kind of reflect his guilt and repressed feelings, he feels guilty for pushing raneyra to be what she is, for not honoring his promise to laena, for inspiring aemond to be what he is, he keeps trying to push a square into a circular hole by using force in whatever he does and now he is finally confronted with the consequences of his actions.

    Everyone wants to be King, but Jace actually proves true kingship. Out of everyone, he has been the most successful at actually gaining alliances through diplomacy. He got the greybeards from Cregan Stark in the North, he got safety and support from Jeyne Arryn in the Vale, and now he's secured the crossing at the Twins from the Freys. He might be young and wants to fight, but he is also not so rash as to not understand the importance of diplomacy that even many adults do not seem to grasp. He would actually one day make a great king.

Or will Daemon fully embody the loving brother and husband who is willing to put his life on the line for Rhaenyra?

As a reader of the books, I find the portrayal of Alys Rivers by the actress to be exceptional. • @Mrryn
    @Mrryn 4 месяца назад +3

    It really feels like Ange is less Team Black and more Team Daemon and has completely missed the point of his Harrenhal misadventures: not just that his way isn't working but that his ego has flared out of control and he refuses to accept it and change. It's literally him at the Stepstones where he ran off to fight the Crabfeeder because he got snubbed for Rhaenyra and wanted to win glory, only to be stalemated for years and not able to just flex his dragon and fight everyone until he got his way. And then he got the message from Viserys, beat the shit out of the messenger, and immediately sent himself into a suicide mission to force it to work or die trying.
    He's gone through the same here, making a dumb, rash thing, being scolded for it and feeling embarassed, then running off to win glory for himself by taking Harrenhal...only for him to meet no resistance. And now he's stuck again, being forced to deal with his ineptitudes and fruitless increasing desperation, hence him insisting on being called Your Grace and now My King. He can't get over it and the less he gets, the more he tries to force it. But he's finding out more and more the lessen Joffrey learned from Tywin: anyone who shouts "I am the king" is no true king. And more and more, it's shown that Daemon is a piss-poor political leader. But now he can't just rush himself into a kamikaze run and make it happen like he did in the Stepstones or else literally abandon the castle he made this big deal about taking, so now he has to come to terms with himself and realize this king shit isn't what's important right now. But right now, he's stuck trying to get that Crabfeeder's crown to take back to throne and prove his worth, but the only crown he can take now is on Aegon's head.
    Also about Alicent, I think the point with her speaking up was not just knowing what Aemond is about, but also the fact that she figured Aemond had something to do with Aegon and, thus, is a potential kin-slaying psycho. And to go along with it, the one trying to bring a degree of reason and possibly take back some power to de-escalate things - Aegon being in the shape he is after one dragon battle, Aemond almost certainly (in her mind) being willing to do that to his own brother, on top of her conversation with Rhaenyra...this was her one big bid to try to take the reins and stop or at least slow things as much as possible. Because she sees now, all too well, what this war means but she was right when she told Rhaenyra it was already too late.

He's so complex as a character and even though he is a foul, disgusting being, I can't help but feel for him a little. In the end, he just wanted his mother's recognition and love. That little "Mommy..." at the end after Alicent left the room made me soft and sad. It does once again, bring in the tragic-ness of this entire dance. daemon didn’t recognize the woman in his hallucination to be his mother until the last bit, why would he? his mother died when he was young, alys is projecting what she assumes his mother would look like. he looks quite alarmed/scared when he realizes that the woman calls him her son, again i don’t think it’s him actually wanting to bang his mom but an intense manipulation of his desires to be loved by his mother, by viserys, by others (honestly it would’ve made more sense if it was viserys instead of alyssa but alas).
    alys herself made a weird comment about daemon never knowing his mother which made it clear that she is using his weaknesses and guilt against him to maybe punish him for his misdeeds. his hallucinations are induced by alys. the words he’s hearing from his loved ones are his own words. for example he feels guilty for the negligence towards his daughter so he imagines laena questioning him about them. basically alys is plucking his weaknesses and anything that he secretly feels guilt about to use them against him
    daemon's harrenhal arc is by far the most interesting part of hotd season 2 in my opinion he’s not being wasted he’s just being peeled

    I think you still dont get some of this characters.
    Daemon is not a lovely father who cares for his family. Also, He is doing what He did in season 1 with Dragonstone, "ruling". Pretty consistent to me, awful human being that just want to be called King.
    Alicent is no interested on ruling or whatever, She undertands how dangerous Aemond really is.

    Seven Hells. If that's Alyssa? Baelon the Brave won the damn lottery. His tomboy little sis turned into a total bombshell! No wonder they couldn't keep their hands off each other.
    (Alyssa died when Daemon was three. She's the one he takes after, while Viserys took after Baelon more. He did get Baelon's fighting skill and dragonriding chops, though.)

    Cole and Daemon fail at public relations in this episode.
    Daemon is not sure he is precisely on Rhaenyra's side, which somewhat explains his dithering.

    Jesus, guys, have some patience. You just got a battle between 3 dragons, pacing needs to come down to build up again.
    It might seem unimportant but Daemon playing Luigi's Mansion is actually important for his character.
    In fact a lot of REALLY important things happened in this episode, but you're so mad it doesn't tell you right away that you're not seeing them when they're staring you right in the face.

    Vermithor is King Jaehrys the king before Viserys Mount it was his Dragon Silverwing was Jaehrys wifes dragon so old big boy and big girl btw they are basically a married old dragon couple as they share the same cave system in dragon pit and Vermithor likes singing and trilling to Silverwing... that little grumble was probarbly him singing to her again lol... remember when Kreegan Stark told Jace that the queen tried to fly her dragon over the wall and the dragon refused yeah that was silverwing...... Vermithor and Silverwing got it on a lot in their prim under Jaehrys and his wife and made many clutches you can basically say 80-90% of the adult dragons are their kids or grandkids and they themselves are children of either Vhagar or Vhagars older much larger closer to Balerion in size sister that died in the war Meraxes kids so really when they say its a war of kin vs kin its not just the Targerians and Hightowers but the dragons too family killing family accross the board its NUTS but yeah Vermithor and Silverwing after their riders passed are basically the old retired couple in the retirement home lol

    There's nothing daemon is doing here that's out of place..... He's a man child that likes to "play king", he did the same thing when viserys cast him aside, taking dragon stone, naming himself king of the step stones..... He would rather rebuild harenhall so he can have a "castle" of his own than help rhaenyra... Even in season one, every battle he fought was always towards a selfish end

    I do think this season has had strange pacing overall, a lot of repetition, particularly with daemon, while there has been some development with him, I just hope that the end result is satisfying and they don't waste his character from now on. I also want to see Daeron on screen and for things to progress more. if Daemon ends up getting character assassinated I'll be soo disappointed even if I've been expecting it since Sara Hess showed her misunderstanding of Daemon's character

    Seeing Alicent realising that when Viserys died all the power and influence she thought she had died with him. Maybe denying Rhaenyra was dumb now Alicent don't you think ? Rhaenyra could have taken the first stumbling steps to allow women more authority and more equal power to men.

    • @andilezulu292
      @andilezulu292 5 месяцев назад +6

      I don't think it's that simple - Alicent has faced sexism and the patriarchy her entire life (she was literally a maritally raped child bride) and even then she held real power as regent when Viserys was sick, maintaining peace and stability in the realm. The problem now is that women in Westeros are not taught or conditioned for warfare - most do not know much about siege tactics, weaponry, raising and sustaining armies etc. Rhaenyra being queen wouldn't automatically chance this because she herself is facing the same undermining of her authority by the men of her own council. Patriarchy is Westeros goes beyond the choices of one singular women like Alicent.
