She was 20. She wanted to marry Charles. Her childhood nickname was Duch, short for Duchess. She believed she was destined to marry into the royal family.
They didn't really know each other before the wedding. They had met 13 times.
Charles was pressured into marrying Diana. When he proposed and she said yes, he didn't act happy, he didn't show any affection, instead he phoned his mother and said something like "She said yes, the deed is done. " Charles left on a 2 month business trip to Australia. He pretty much ignored her until the day before the wedding. The honeymoon was a disaster. Diana was binge eating and purging multiple times a day and crying. Charles had planned a 3 month relaxing vacation to get to know each other. Diana had unrealistic expectations and was disappointed and angry. Charles took some alone time to paint. He is a known artist and his artwork is sold to provide funds for charities. Diana was so angry she destroyed Charles's artwork and art supplies. Charles found a therapist for her before the honeymoon was over. Diana refused therapy at that time. She eventually got help and supported charities that helped people with mental illness. She publicly shared her struggles with depression and bulimia. Diana suffered from depression, low self-esteem, and self-destructive behaviors including bulimia before she met Charles. People with bulimia are moody, irrational, argumentative, and difficult to live with. Their relationship became toxic and both were miserable by 1986.
Diana was not used and discarded. She used her membership in the royal family to become a big celebrity. By 1985 she understood the value and power of publicity. She was not a supportive wife, instead Diana was competitive. She drew attention to herself and away from Charles. She hogged the limelight.
There was a lot wrong in their marriage. They were not compatible in many ways. Both failed to meet each others expectations and needs. They didn't have any common interests other than the boys.
Diana was extremely emotionally needy and Charles was never prepared to provide the level of attention Diana wanted.
Diana was in love with her bodyguard Barry Mannakee in 1985-1986. Mannakee was there providing attention. When Charles became informed of Diana's relationship with her bodyguard, he ended his intimate relationship with Diana. Otherwise, it would be possible for Diana to have a child by another man and pass the child off as an heir to the throne. That would be high treason.
Charles renewed his intimate relationship with Camilla in 1986. Charles was faithful to Diana until 1986.
Diana admitted she had an affair with James Hewitt starting in 1986. She and her lovers usually denied their affairs. Diana didn't have a lot of privacy. The paparazzi hung out around Kensington palace 24 hours a day.
Diana had 8 or more affairs before the divorce was final in 1996. Some were married men and the tabloids labeled Diana a home wreaker. Diana hurt other women. She did what she wanted to do. She was not a Saint.
If Charles had been faithful, Princess Diana would be alive today. She has such a sweet voice in this.

Same. It's painful to watch, you can see they both are a bundle of nerves. Said thing is that there was so mach family pressure on both sides that the marriage was forced. Season 4 Episode 2 of the crown really does a good job showing that.

There are videos of her learning to do interviews. In one of the interviews during their 1983 trip to Australia, she is being asked about William. Charles is sitting next to her and whispering in her ear to help her answer questions. He looks happy and proud of her. Things changed in 1984. By 1985 she was drawing attention to herself and hogging the limelight.
Diana refused to follow many of the royal family rules and it caused conflict in the marriage and in the royal family. Diana refused to follow the conservative dress code and became a fashion diva.
She understood the value and power of publicity. She developed a relationship with the paparazzi and contacted them to ensure she got the attention for her charities and for herself. She became the most photographed woman in history. Doesn't mean she was more charitable, there are other hardworking royals like princess Anne, Anne didn't gain as much public attention.
Of course Charles was hurt, jealous, and turned off. As the future king he was supposed to be the center of attention. I suspect most marriages in the 1980s would become difficult if the wife was more successful. We can't compare Charles and Diana by today's standards for ordinary people. They were required to follow the royal family rules. One of the rules is spouses of royals are required to be supportive and avoid drawing too much attention to themselves and away from the royal spouse.
Diana was competitive for public attention instead of being a supportive wife. Diana even competed with the queen for public attention.
Catherine is a good example of a supportive wife to a royal spouse. Catherine follows the rules and does not draw attention away from William.

Lady Collin Campbell's book "The real Diana" is very well reseached and it protrays the truth behind it as far more complicated. Interviews friends of Charles and Diana, staff, and BRF family members. The BRF did not torture Diana, it doesn't bash either DIana or Charles. Diana was also very Naive and had a very warped view of what love was to the point she became anti everything Charles liked.
People blame the Royal family for this, but imagine marrying off your youngest daughter to her sister's ex at the age of 19 just so that you can glorify your already heavily decorated family tree. The Spencers could have stopped this, but they wanted to ship off their most beautiful and yet most troubled daughter so that they could be a royal house yet again.
Diana's grandmother, Lady Fermoy was best friend and Lady in Waiting to the Queen Mother. I have a feeling she manipulated it.
