Georges Bizet (1838-1875)
He is a French composer in the Romantic period.
He composed "Carmen"(1875), a Opéra-Comique in four acts.
The libretto was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on a novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée.
It is one of the best known and most performed operas in the world.
"Carmen" is a story about Carmen, a beautiful and attractive gypsy woman.
[Argument]
Place: Seville, Spain, and surrounding hills
Time: Around 1820
Act I - A square, in Seville. On the right, a door to the tobacco factory. At the back, a bridge. On the left, a guardhouse.
Act II - Lillas Pastia's Inn
Act III - A wild spot in the mountains
Act IV - A square in Seville. At the back, the walls of an ancient amphitheatre
[Scenario]
Carmen, a gypsy in a tobacco factory in Seville, southern Spain, seduces a sergeant, Don José. In this scene, Carmen sings "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle" to José.
Micaëla's fiancé, José falls in love with Carmen.
After that, José and Carmen live with the smugglers in the mountain. But Carmen has now become bored with José and tells him scornfully that he should go back to his mother.
Accompanied by a guide, Micaëla, José's fiancée, enters the camp. In this scene, Micaëla sings "Je dis que rien n'épouvante (I say that nothing frighten me)".
She ask to go back to home because José's mother is dying. He departs, vowing he will return.
However, Carmen feels in love with the bullfighter, Escamillo and they express their mutual love. Don José, mad with despair, stabs her, and as Escamillo is acclaimed by the crowds, Carmen dies.
