i'll never understand why this is one of the most overlooked songs in her discography. it's so fun and sweet but has some of her best lyrics. it's one of my favs on evermore
I agree! And I’m guilty of forgetting about it myself. Just added it to my playlist though so I won’t forget about it again! I don’t know how one could EVER choose a favorite song of hers. I could prolly choose one from each album but out of all her discography, no way could I choose. Folklore and TPD are tied for my favorite album. I’ll be honest. I wasn’t a full blown Swifty until Folklore! I liked her, but was not in a level where I could call myself a Swifty! Now I full blown lol as a lyricist, she’s unmatched
My husband who is not at all a swiftie had this song stuck in his head for days and has no idea what it was called. He heard it while I was playing a playlist on a road trip and was horrified to learn that not everyone is obsessed with this song.
This song is about her Reputation era, when everyone was coming at her, she felt surrounded on all sides, and kinda did a getaway car with the wrong guy. But, she realized it and knocked on Joe’s door and he was the right guy at the time. Then at the end, she gives herself advice that her nemeses will take themselves out & if the shoe fits (Joe) walk in it forever. And then she switches the lyrics long story short it was the wrong guy to long story short i survived. My favorite line is verse 2. I always felt I looked better in the rear view. Meaning guys she had dated in the past never really appreciated what they had until she was gone. This is from her evermore album. It’s overshadowed by her folklore album but it’s a favorite.
Highly recommend Marjorie from the evermore album. It’s a tribute to her late grandmother who was an opera singer. She even samples her grandmothers voice in the song! It’s sad but beautiful and is a great example Taylor’s raw talent.
This is basically about how bad things were when her reputation went downhill and people were coming at her (Kim/Kanye situation), then she disappeared from the public eye and started dating Tom Hiddleston (clung to the nearest lips/ wrong guy), and then she met Joe who she wrote this song about. P.s. Yes, this is from her album evermore!
This song is about her reputation time. All the things she went through and now looking back at them she would tell herself not to fight back bc her enemies will defeat themselves. Now in her current time she is focusing on the person she loves and thinking about how she survived that horrible Kim and Kanye moment
Evermore is the name of the album with this song! It’s also the name of the last track on the album. Evermore is such a fantastic, heartbreaking, emotional album. Many Swifties believe it’s overlooked as a whole. Such a great song with a great message about being able to appreciate your past and learn from it. Thanks for sharing!
This song is about Taylor finding Joe after a string of not good relationships and after the depression she experienced during the Kim/Kanye saga. She says the guys before were the wrong guys, but now she's all about this new guy who was the right person for that time in her life.
The reaction on this one was top tier. I absolutely loved it! One of the only shining new RUclips channels out there! Speaking of shining.... look at that beautiful little bald head. The reflection just gets my head spinning 😅
Classic Taylor switch up at the end switching it to "Climbed right back up the cliff, long story short I SURVIVED" after saying the whole time it was a bad time. She's so good at that. I love that it ends with Long Story Short I Survived.... That whole last little verse is her talking to herself "Past Me, I want to tell you not to get lost in these petty things, your nemesis, will defeat themselves before you get the chance to swing...." It's her telling her past self not to get caught up in the drama, her enemies will eventually take themselves out... and they did! Cause "me and Karma vibe like that!"
I lovelovelove this song, so I jumped on it when I saw the video :) Such a fun song about all the drama of when everything exploded with K&K, the bad relationship she was in at the time, how she basically ran away with Tom Hiddleston (the wrong guy) and then found Joe and disappeared with him to heal and get strong again.
First off, that intro was pure gold! You guys always seem you have so much fun with one another😂😂 But if you want to check out more of Evermore, I highly recommend Champagne Problems, Tis The Damn Season, Happiness, Coney Island, Cowboy Like Me and Marjorie. The writing on this album is just phenomenal!!
The number of times I shouted “no!” At my tv while watching this (esp the first verse & chorus) and pausing DURING THE BRIDGE) but will I still watch every Taylor video you guys put out? Yup. I think this one is definitely better with Reputation context. But great catch on “evermore” though.
I see it with the similar theme as, "Begin Again". A previous relationship was unhealthy but the current relationship feels much healthier. "Clung to the nearest lips", could mean she went with the first guy who give her attention but in the end it didn't work out. However if you want to relate it to Taylor it would be about the time when the media were trying to cancel her for a scandal. Then she stayed out of the public eye for a bit and met Joe.
This song is about how her reputation went downhill (and where we got the album reputation) and how her bf at the time ditched her because of it and then she met Joe (who this song is about) and all the noise of the news and haters didn't matter anymore. It also mentions the Kim/Kanye phone drama in the line "your nemeses will defeat themselves before you get the chance to swing" which is alluding to the infamous phone call where it came out later that Kim/Kanye had edited the call to make it seem like Taylor had said OK, but she never did, meaning she didn't have to lift a finger to defend herself because they did it to themselves. It's most definitely not about her kissing some random dude and then begging for forgiveness. I love your reactions, but I wish the people suggesting these songs for you to react to would give some context on to what was happening in her life at the time.
This song is not really that deep. Taylor had some shitty times with all the drama in her life and she kissed a bunch of the wrong guys until she met Joe and found herself finally in something stable and happy. It’s a bop that breaks up the beautiful but devastating Evermore album. What is really fantastic was that intro. Honestly some of your best work 🤣
It's interesting to me how everyone gets different visual impressions on a first listen, different lyrics standing out. Jake took this as a scenario and the "clung to the nearest lips" vibe, whereas my first impression was a joking summary of like... her entire dating life + the spotlight, the opposite of one night haha. The "long story short" immediately sounds like a joke to me given the amount of shit she's cramming into such quick lyrics in the song making it impossible to summarise, like "the negatives of my life as a famous artist for as long as you've known me... long story short it was a bad time". The fact that she starts with "Fatefully, I tried to pick my battles 'til the battle picked me. Misery" immediately summarises her entire approach to the media and conflict (hence her usually being unproblematic until the Kanye incident or her stolen albums etc. she tries so hard to be "good") , and "right down the rabbit hole" gives me falling into fame (she has a song called "wonderland" on 1989 her biggest pop album). Standouts to me about dating + fame are also: "I always felt I must look better in the rear view, missing me at the golden gates they once held the keys to" and "Past me I wanna tell you not to get lost in these petty things, your nemeses will defeat themselves before you get the chance to swing:
First what medication are you on Jake??? 😂😂😂 But dude Alex/Evan, harsh!!!! This is about her and Joe for sure. I love her other song after they broke up. You're Loosing Me. I thought that song was amazing. This one is so beautifully written too. ❤
Evermore my beloved Holy humpty dumpy??? Free the Michelin man he just wanted to lick undisclosed objects!! Also, Taylor brings up the issues with keeping score a couple time throughout her discography and it’s always a great point. It’s so crucial to a caring and successful relationship to just understand and accept each other rather than holding grudges and counting everything you did right and they did wrong in the back of your mind. If you liked the production on this one you’d probably enjoy closure too. It’s my favorite other than happiness on the album.

I also LOVE this song!!! Especially the speed and pacing of the song is so incredibly good 💕
Evermore is the least favorite sister
I love it because it’s like a tongue in cheek history of Tays dating.

Perfectly put!
I’ve always loved this song. Now I understand it even more.
This intro was so chaotic 😂 I love it
Long story short they survived.
Highly recommend Marjorie from the evermore album. It’s a tribute to her late grandmother who was an opera singer. She even samples her grandmothers voice in the song! It’s sad but beautiful and is a great example Taylor’s raw talent.
It's SO NICE for a change to hear you guys speculating that it's going to be a sad song when, for once, is absolutely isn't 🥰🥰

I’m a rare bird, I guess. I love “evermore”. I love it more than “folklore.” No skips on it.
